Comic relief

I've put your top 21 new comic-strip picks into a poll, but you're still welcome to campaign for other strips in the comments. So far, clear favorites include "Lio," "Liberty Meadows,"* and one I didn't know about -- "Dog Eat Doug."

"PreTeena," "Red and Rover," and some old favorites, such as "Shoe" and my beloved "For Better or For Worse" also came in for multiple mentions. And another new one to me, "Agnes," also has some devoted fans.

Here are some answers to some of your questions about the comic choice:

Q: Why are you picking a new comic?
A: The fabulous "FoxTrot" moved to Sundays only, leaving a hole in our comic lineup, and we can either run reruns of that strip or pick another.

Q: Why can't you select "Get Fuzzy," "Pogo," "Arlo & Janis" or "[INSERT OTHER STRIP HERE]"?
A:
Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of those, especially "Get Fuzzy," but we have to pick from the list our supplier provides. They offer about 100 choices, which is a pretty good selection. Not everyone will be happy, but thankfully most other strips can be found other places online. Comics.com is a great resource (and does have "Get Fuzzy") and many strips have official sites -- the "For Better or For Worse" site even offers extras, including letters from the characters. And my favorite newspaper comic resource is the Houston Chronicle, which has a ton of strips and lets you personalize your daily comics page.

Q: What are you talking about when you say "For Better or For Worse" is going to go hybrid?
A: Read this Test Pattern entry for more, but essentially cartoonist Lynn Johnston is moving towards a format that will combine some new strips with some old strips. (The old strips may be introduced with a little new footage of a character reminscing about the past.) There's no exact date yet, but the new format may kick in around September 2007. We can still select "FBOFW"  as a strip, I just wanted readers to consider that not all upcoming content will be new.

Q: Why are you replacing "FoxTrot" because it's in reruns, but not "Boondocks," which has been in reruns since spring 2006?
A:
An excellent question! Looks like we have two strips that could be replaced. I'm checking on that. Unlike Bill Amend of "FoxTrot," cartoonist Aaron McGruder of "Boondocks" hasn't officially retired his weekday strip, but his hiatus is approaching a year now. This Washington Post article from last fall doesn't seem to have a lot of hope that "Boondocks" will return. I'll keep you posted.

*Fans of "Liberty Meadows" should take note: I believe that strip is also in reruns, since Frank Cho is reportedly focusing on drawing "Liberty Meadows" comic books.

Q: How about adding "Pooch Cafe," "Doonesbury," or "Non Sequitur"?
A:
Already got 'em. Check our daily comics list here for those and other strips we already carry.

Remember to vote in our comics poll, and you can also continue to post comments. It's great if in your comment, you add a little descriptive info about why we should select the comic/comics you're nominating. Thanks!

I've never met a comic I didn't like, but "Get Fuzzy" is my all time favorite--it's as though someone smooshed together "Calvin & Hobbes" and "the Dark Side". It makes me laugh out loud nearly every day.
I din't even know you had a comics page.
I want to know why my news paper (Charlotte Observer) and probably others, still run "Peanuts" repeats. They're not new, they're horribly dated (cool cat "Joe College"?) and Charlie Brown is clinically depressed.
I was just thinking that this would be a great opportunity for that 'up and coming' cartoonist. Why not run a contest to fill the hole? By the way, FBOW will always be my favorite!
I'd suggest "Working it Out"; funny for the work force. They pulled it from our local paper when they decided to refresh the comics page after having to also replace "Foxtrot". I miss it and would like to have a place to read it. Thanks
"Agnes" is a scream. Period.
I vote for an "up and coming" comic. MediumLarge and Barkeater Lake are both hilarious!
Thank you for the thorough job you are doing, and ESPECIALLY for including "DOG EAT DOUG" on this list! Hopefully it's strong, early response will intrigue others to check out why those of us who love the strip, love it so passionately. Go Sophie GO!
The Argyle Sweater is one that is hilarious! I started reading it online over at uclick.com and now I'm addicted.
I agree with the waste that Peanuts reruns are. Wouldn't Charles Schultz have wanted to give an up and coming artist a chance versus taking up a valuable slot with 30 year old strips? Truly worthy strips like Pearls Before Swine end up getting the shaft for the same old football gag from 1971.
dog eat doug
I'm shocked you don't carry Get Fuzzy already. That's my vote.
I vote for 'Dog Eat Doug'. Very whimsical.
"Get Fuzzy" is the best daily since Bill Watterson retired. Funny, clever, and sometimes (slightly) obscene; it's the only strip to make me laugh aloud. LONG LIVE BUCKY!!!
I think Big Top would be a great choice!
Have you considered Brewster Rockit?
Please, please include Pearls Before Swine. Genuinely funny stuff.
My vote goes to Dog Eat Doug. It is clever and well drawn. Something for everyone!
Ooookay. If "Liberty Meadows" is in re-runs, too, then I rescind my "Liberty Meadows" vote in favor of "Betty" -- that chick from Canada is smart, funny and has a family, which makes her similar to the FoxTrot mom, but Betty is much sharper and edgier and yet, somehow, more grounded than Paige's mom.
These polls are bogus. You're the editor .. pick it yourself. I've voted more than 80 times for Dog Eat Doug (the most vapid one I could find) just to prove how ridiculous and scammable these polls are.
Lio' is a wonderful, NEW strip. And what about Brewster Rockit? Gag me.
Just a note to James Hacking, and others who think re-voting will determine the comic choice: The poll alone is not going to decide which strip we use. Obviously we know people can vote over and over, we note that in the text surrounding that and any poll. Although I understand the devotion of people who really are fans of a certain strip trying to help it gain an advantage by voting over and over, I must say I don't really understand why people would do it "just to prove how ridiculous and scammable these polls are."
I wish my local paper, New Orleans Times-Picayune, would give up on Peanuts. They ran one Sunday from 1960--the strip is over 47 years old. What is the deal?
How about "Zits" by Jim Borgman. It's hysterical !!!
From now on, whenever "Dog eat Doug" is in a newspaper poll, I'll question the legitimacy of the results. That's just ridiculous.
The fact that one person admitted to "scamming" this poll by re-voting for "Dog Eat Doug", does not detract from the fact that those of us who LOVE this strip, love it because it is humorous, witty heartwarming, and "spot on" in it's observations of dog behaviour. While I understand your skepticism, your opinions of how a poll is conducted does not diminish the worth of the actual comic.
I LOVE Agnes! You have to read her a little to catch on and get to know the characters to appreciate what a great strip this is. Very intelligent, witty, and the artwork is wonderful! She should definitely be added!
I agree that Agnes is a wonderful comic strip. I also am convinced the cartoonist is following me around and using my life as material for Agnes. My best friend is very "Trout"like. A great sight like MSN should have a great strip added. Let's get Agnes in there!
Pooch Cafe is new to me, and provides a needed belly-laugh each day. Pooch can be accessed at the address comics@mycomicspage.com, among others. There are also two books on the pooch. Google will find these for you, and Amazon has a two-for-one deal on the books. A truly great cartoon, all the better when combined with "Get Fuzzy." Wally (AKA Trout)
It is wearisome striving to calculate the hours we've exhausted searching for popular dog names research.
