Addison's Anatomy? 'Grey's' controversial spinoff

Spinoffs can be popular hits on their own ("The Simpsons" spun off from "The Tracy Ullman Show"), or just horrible ("Joanie Loves Chachi," "AfterMASH"). They can seek a completely different tone than the original show ("Melrose Place" was much more nighttime soapy than earnest "Beverly Hills, 90210"), or just reassemble some familiar faces and hope to coast ("Joey" should have stayed in New York with his "Friends"). What will happen with the new, as-yet-unnamed, Kate Walsh-starring "Grey's Anatomy" spinoff, which I'm dubbing "Addison's Anatomy"?

According to Scoop columnist Jeannette Walls, some of Walsh's fellow castmembers aren't too thrilled about the new show. And many "Grey's" fans I've talked to are leery about the spinoff. They generally hate the idea of losing Addison, who's been a rich addition to the show, and they wonder which characters, if any, will go with her. (Most rumors say the rest of the cast is staying put, at least for now.) What will happen to her budding relationship with Alex Karev, or her conflict-filled past with McSteamy, not to mention the new role she's taken in ex-husband Derek's life?

It's unclear, too, if Addison's spinoff will keep her in Seattle -- where Seattle Grace staffers could presumably drop in from time to time -- or if she'll return to New York, where the character comes from. A New York-based show would mean a whole new cast (unless McSteamy also returned home?), but would those characters click with viewers in the same way that George, Bailey, the Chief, and the others have done?

Although I've mentioned before that "Grey's Anatomy" is less about the patients than it is about the doctors' relationships, I wonder, too, if the show will only focus on Addison's medical specialty -- neonatal surgery. Is that varied enough for an entire show? Week after week of sad pregnant women and tiny little rubber babies, some surviving, some not? Yes, pregnancy shows like "A Baby Story" draw in the female viewing audience, but will this work for an hour-long drama?

We do know that the new show will begin with a two-hour "Grey's" in May that will set everything up for the spinoff. And we know that Hunky Taye Diggs (or "Taye Diggs, Show-Killer," as a co-worker calls the actor, who didn't last long with either "Kevin Hill" or "Day Break") and Hector Elizondo are signed for the new show. We know that"Grey's" creator Shonda Rhimes will run the show. She's done such an ace job with "Grey's," but I can't help think of an interview I once read with "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" showrunner Joss Whedon. When asked about a scene in which sun-shunning vampire Angel appeared in a top-down convertible, Whedon admitted that moment was when he realized "I can't do two shows." Can Rhimes?

I HATE this idea. I was slow to warm up to Gray's, mainly because I don't like Meredith, but I have really come to enjoy the show and a lot of that is the character of Addison. I like that she is so highly competent in her profession, but not so much so in her personal life. I like her new interaction with Derek, the flirtation with Alex, her friendship with Callie, etc. As much as I like the character though, I can't really imagine tuning in to a new show focused on her; and neither of the announced co-stars change my opinion on that. Maybe if they cast the actor who played Denny on the new show....
I hate the idea of a spin off. I love what the character of Addison brings to the show and the chemistry btwn her & alex. Enough of the spin offs, leave a good thing alone.
I believe that it is too soon for a spin-off with any of the characters. I love the chemistry that the WHOLE cast has with each other. The possibility of a spin-off would be nice in a couple of years, but it is a little soon. The only way that I see the new show working would be if Addison and McSteamy both go back to NYC and start their new relationship and new show together.
I think the idea of a spin off is ridiculous. Why ruin a good thing?! The dynamic between all the characters is what makes the show great! Spin offs very rarely succeed anyway.
dont take addison of Greys or I will quit watching! and I wont watch the spinoff
I think the more Shonda Rhimes the better. I think the show will do great b/c most of Grey's fans will watch it and Kate deserves more airtime- she is great! I think Addison should go back to New York and pick up where she left off before she moved to Seattle. I will watch her make it on a new show.
I think a show with Addison going to NY and starting over would work if they use the same formula as Grey's. I think people would believe she would pick up and leave now that Meredith and Derek are together. I never could understand after that happened why she stayed around. I wouldn't be able to stay around and watch them together. I don't really love her character on the show but I am starting to get used to her. If she leaves there is still plenty of people left for the writers to have story lines.I just don't know if she could hold her own show. She needs a good supporting cast to help her out.
I don't like the idea. I think Kate Walsh's charcter works well with the chemistry of the Grey's cast. However, I don't think her character is strong enough to carry her own show.
Simple, don't go there!
I, too, think it may be premature for a spin-off. However, Kate Walsh is fantastic and could use more exposure. Taye Diggs and Hector Elizondo? Not my first choice of co-stars....
The Meredith character has fought back and forth to get McDreamy. Now that she has him she seems to not like it so much. I am tired of that storyline and her character is boring to me. Addison has a brilliant screen presence and is fun to watch. Anytime they take an interesting character from the cast, there is a void left behind and the show eventually dies.
One word, "Dumb."
I rarely watch television and so am delighted when I find a show with substance, action, intricate relationships, a good story etc. GA is one of those show. So I hate the idea of changes - I was so afraid Meredith was dying and even hated that her mother is gone. My vote - stay together - no spinoffs!!
It's a great idea! She is the best character in the show to spin off on. Who else? The show is starting to slip anyway...
Who cares. I got so fed up with Shonda, Isaah, and ABC during their poor handling of the TR Knight debacle, that I had to quit watching the show all together. (Seriously, rehab for being a homophobe? How dumb do they think we are?) Those poor actors must feel very unappreciated by Shonda and ABC. They should quit.
As much as I love Addison on Greys, I can see a lot of future plot lines and none of them include her. Most of them, though, would bring new characters (remember, this isn't the last group of trainees that will come through Seattle Grace). I'd rather see Addison start over somewhere else (NY is way too done on TV).
Why on earth would you want to do a spin off. The show is great with all the characters. Addison is not that great to have her own show. I can't see myself watching it.
I don't like the fact of a spinoff. Grey's is still fairly new and getting really interesting now. I think a spinoff will hurt the show. Addison is fine playing the part she has now.
Addison is my least favorite on Grey's, with McSteamy a close second....so I doubt I'll bother tuning in. Now, if Katherine Hagel (Izzy) got her own show I'd ask you to make it 2 hours long!
I don't think you should mess up a good thing. Grey's is the best show on tv, I think taking anyone and making a new show would be a huge mistake.
Yuck, Yuck, and EEWWWWW. Love the show but don't love Addison enough to watch a spin off.
Here's a great idea. Have Dr. Addison move back East and she and Dr. House MD could do a few shows, I'd love to see her tangle with House.
NO - don't do it!! Why mess with a good thing? It's the only show I make sure I'm home to watch, please don't ruin it.
"as the star"? In reality, the other characters have completely overshadowed Pompeo's whiny, self-absorbed Grey. Addison is the most interesting character on the whole show. But frankly, the three-parter was execrable. Shonda Rimes should at least consult a doctor or nurse when making a medical series.
I agree that it is just too soon for a spin-off. I like all of the characters together and do not want Addison to leave the show. I like the new role she plays in McDreamy's life too. Plus, she and Karev can have their thing and make McSteamy work for it and Callie needs an ally. Save Addison!
Kate Walsh is a strong actor and Addison is a likeable character. However, if you remove her from the show you remove the struggle that keeps the show going and the thirst for resolution from the viewers who keep coming back for more. She has more promise sticking with the show, not going it alone. Not yet anyway.
I'm torn about this news. I love Addison's character, but I think that the qualities that make her stand out are, in part, set off by the others in the show. It will, I fear, be the removal of the surrounding personalities that causes problems for the new show.
If they were going to give anybody a spinoff, it should have been Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who played the late lamented Denny Duquette!
I think I'd rather watch a show about Addison than Meredith and the gang. Addison is a great and straong character, never whiny and mopey, unlike a certain Gery's main character. Maybe with Addy running the floor we can have a complex show with adult emotions rather than the ninth-grade "why doesn't he love me" crap we get from Mer.
I have to say as others have, leave it be, it's good the way it is, it still makes me cry at the right times.
Its too early for a spinoff. they should wait. Addison wasnt even supposed to be on Greys for more than 5 episodes but they kept her because we like her. it doesnt make any sense to get rid of her.
I believe that it is too good to mess with. The cast needs to stay put.
At this point, the chemisty between Addison and Alex is one of the redeeming parts of the show. McSteamy? He's a loser from the word go...take away the tension of those three and GA is sinking fast!
I think it will be a mistake the show is great the way it is. I think that Addison is a good fit for the show don't take that away now. If they do make one it will be a flop and she will return to Seattle Grace.
i wouldn't watch it, and i doubt anyone else would either. the show is way too young to have a spin off. besides spin-offs are for shows that are struggling to keep up with ratings, and that is definately not the case with this great show!!! no spin-off! boy-cot!
one of the things that keeps me watching grey's is addison. i find her character to be very interesting and MATURE. yes i would love to learn more about addison and i do not think i will on grey's since evrything is through the eyes of meredith. i'd like to know more about the 11 year marriage, about her relationship with her parents (having a preppy pass and all), about the "type" of doctor she really is when, and how she feels about bein a neonatal sugeon and at the sametime having an abortion...
Was Frasier the first choice for a spin-off from Cheers? It could work...
I love GA but have no desire to see a spin off, no matter what actor you pick to be the star of it. It really is too soon to even go there, if ever! Leave the actors where they are and continue building on their story lines.
what did she do to deserve this to happen to her...and I'm not saying this is a good thing either. What did the character that is barely seen...and when she appears is not greated so warmly...or either is doing the most silliest things to avoid another 'bed quest'...what makes this character ready for a spin off? Weakness is not her sweetness...yet the character is to weak in followers to lead. Maybe if we were given some signs of things to come...something to make us pay attention and wonder, "what is she up to...where is she going...who is she speaking with..." things that made us wonder before hereing..."there's a spin off"...spin to what...using what?????? I've been watching for sometime now and I still don't see a story//character strong enough to have a spin off. Maybe the chief of staff and his life changes...especially since Gray's mother passed...his wife left him...etc. Nahhhhhh don't see one there to much...how about...nahhhhh ...Grey's is not ready without a good setup....I refuse to watch, 'just because'...give me a reason~
I don't know why everyone is giving Grey's such a hard time about this. It has been done and when in the right location (i.e. CSI:... and Law&Order...) it is brilliant. I love Addison and believe that she is a big fish in a little pond with Grey's. I also would not want to stay around and watch my ex love another woman more than he loved me (it's just not human nature)..She should go back to NY and join a team there...But Taye Diggs=Bad Choice.. And last thing, I am more annoyed that (as reported in the MSNBC Gossip story) that Ellen Pompeo would think for a second that she should be consulted on ANYTHING regarding this show. She is not a writer, producer, director, creator, or anything else in a position that would warrant "consulting."
Ditto... WAY too soon for a spin-off... and the dynamic of Addison with McSteamy, Derek and Grey gives a great dimension of what the real world can be grappling with... take her away and everyone lives WAY too peacefully... I like having the emotional baggage struggle dealt with often.
Terrible idea. Why turn one good show into two bad ones. We don't need another show on TV about doctors and their insecure relationships. One is good, two is bad. Addison is great on Greys - leave her there!!
I LOVE the idea of Addison having a spin-off. There are currently too many characters on Grey's to deal with... it's bogged down, and a little tedious. Addison is a wonderful character whom I've grown to enjoy, and I'd love to see what happens if she moves back to New York and starts her life anew. I'd like to see George and Callie go with her. Angel was a great spinoff from Buffy, and I just don't understand why people think it's too soon to spinoff.
Seriously? Seriously? DON'T mess with something great. Why oh why do ppl decide to mix stuff up when it is working the way it is?? I do really like Addison, but I think she CONTRIBUTES to GA, she doesn't MAKE GA! So I don't think she could front her own show. Love love love the show as it is now, please don't start changing out the major players in the cast!
The spinoff is too premature ... yes, the show is a hit, but why mess with a good thing ... if the spinoff is a bomb, where are the spinoff characters going to land??? ... if they all show up on Grey's, the arcs and story lines will get too diluted and it will be almost impossible to keep up with what's going on ...
Why are they messing with such a good thing? With how rocky things have been on the set and with the cast lately I am just affraid that this is going to push some of the actors over the edge and then Grey's is the next Lost.
I enjoy the banter between Addison and the staff, she seems to be the one with a intelligent thought process. Yet, her past, while sad..made her character more human and soft. That's what makes Grey's addictive...and appealing. When it tugs at your emotions..you have to come back for more.
No spinoff! Just keep making GA the best show on tv! Keep Addison in Seattle to irritate the others! You can get rid of Mark, though!
I think that a spin off could be a good thing. It will be interesting to see how they make the spin off work. Addison moving back to New York as she did not save her marriage with Derek makes since. I'm not sure she could pull it all off on her own though...but who knows...she could end up like Fraiser!
I love the Addison character. She is my absolute favorite. I would love to see her on her own show. Grey's Anatomy is beginning to bore me. The egos of the actors is ruining what used to be a great show.
