'American Idol' tough to predict

Predicting who will go home on the "American Idol" results show each week can be tough. It's a challenge because you can't simply choose the worst singers -- you have to picture the voting audience and try and determine whose fans will be out in frantic force.

Our office predictions tonight were unanimous on only one singer: Jared Cotter. It was no surprise to us when he was the first to be cut. He just didn't stand out, to us or to the judges. When even gentle Paula delivers almost nothing but negative comments, you know you're in trouble.

I also felt that Sabrina Sloan would be packing her bags. Her singing voice was fine, and judge Simon Cowell put her among his top four women in a strong field, but he also compared her song to those heard in "a hotel resort performance." One wonders how many hotel singers Simon has heard in his life -- he's always comparing someone's song to a bad lounge singer, yet really, he doesn't seem like the kind of guy to hang in the Duluth Radisson, waiting for the after-dinner entertainment. While Sabrina's voice alone would beat out such singers as Haley Scarnato, she didn't make her personality stand out. Charm: 1. Vocal chops: 0.

I honestly didn't believe Antonella Barba would go home, but for all the wrong reasons. Has any singer this season received more press attention, even if most of it was unwanted? The racy photos that are supposedly of Barba have people buzzing. Her name recognition alone has to be about the highest among the current crop of "Idol" wannabes. The fact that she did get booted, and not Haley or Jordin Sparks, makes the conspiracy theorists in all of us come out. Could "American Idol" be messing with the results, thinking they didn't need Barba on the show, especially now that people are pointing out the double standard that kept her on the show and booted Frenchie Davis? Inquiring minds do wonder. Her leaving was deserved, but it was still surprising.

The other shocker from Thursday's results show involved the men. Sundance Head, he of the chin-fro and self-deprecating jokes about his weight, seemed like one of those singers who could coast on his personality and fanbase for weeks to come. Don't forget that much was made at the auditions of the fact that he has a famous father, singer Roy Head. But even if he didn't, there's that memorable cowboyesque nickname (his real name is Jason). Anything that helps your name stick in fans' minds these days gains you votes. Does Brandon Rogers have more of a fanbase than Sundance? Does Phil Stacey?

Apparently, because the sun went down on Sundance. Which meant that 17-year-old Sanjaya Malakar, whose voice is obviously weak, had a groundswell of fans who turned out to vote to keep him around. It's not that hard to understand, really. No one can text-message and dial a phone faster than teenage and preteen girls, and no singer on the show is better suited to be beloved by young women than Sanjaya.

But Sanjaya would do well to remember another young "Idol" male: Kevin Covais from last season. Covais had similar charms to Sanjaya -- he was young, cute, and eager, although his voice couldn't stack up to the older singers. Covais made it to the final 12, and then shocked many by making it to the top 11. (Some credit "Vote for the Worst.com" with keeping him in that long.) But he was gone the next week, and before he left, had to endure some caustic comments from Simon Cowell that could not have been easy for anyone, let along a teen, to hear in front of millions of people.

Sanjaya is still singing, but his road is only likely to get tougher from here on out.

Sorry. Dont agree with you at all about Jared!!The judges didnt want him and they made it happen. Too classy for the show. They're looking for a hipster since Taylor Hicks didnt sell many records last season. Sanjaya is on for effect. It's all rigged.
I was really sorry to see that Sundance Head was voted off the show. I really expected it to be Sanjaya Malakar. I thought that Sanjaya had a weaker voice.
Sundance's whole number was off key (sharp). He tried to Daughtry but failed badly. Sanjaya doesn't belong at all, but his deathwatch from here on should be interesting. Sabrina leaving is a major surprise, but as long as Antonella was eliminated, something is right.
Amercan Idol is getting to be more of a popularity contest then a singing contest. The public needs to listen more to the judges and evaluate the singing. Sanjaya has one of the weakest voices but apparently appeals to the younger female fan. I wouldn't have dreamed that he would be chosen over Sundance.
I was extremely shocked that Sabrina got cut. Her "farewell" performance was one of the best ever. We haven't heard the last of her. And what is wrong with America keeping Sanjaya on there? He is not only a mediocre singer, at best, but even He knows he's out of his league among the rest! I also think Jared got ripped off at this stage. But... I will still tune in next week and the weeks to follow!
It's not rigged. Every single brown person in all of America is voting for Sanjaya. He could pratically just stand on the stage and hum and he would be put through. It's all in the numbers baby, its obviously not about talent.
Quite frankly, I think the voters got it close to perfect. I didn't expect Sabrina to go while Haley stayed as Sabrina is the better singer with stage presence to match but something about her makes her less likeable. As for Sanjaya over Sundance, yep, thank heaven Sundance is gone. Nothing outstanding about him except his ability to scream. He had only one good performance out of the 4 past weeks: "Stars" need to be a lot more consistent. So sure, Sanjaya's stay will be short-lived. So will Haley's. But let's face it: there are only 2 people who are Idol standard this season and the final battle will be between them: Lakisha and Melinda leave the rest for finished already.
Sundance, if you read this - keep going! You should have stayed, you should have won. A fan
Once again, America got it wrong. I wish that people would really vote based on singing rather than on popularity or sympathy. Having said that, Sanjaya and Haley DID NOT deserve those last two seats of the top 12. Maybe people were giving them sympathy votes in response to Simon's negative comments. I will miss the incredible voices of Sabrina and Jared. They were voted off too soon!
Sanjaya? He survived again? Good grief! Sundance gone? There truly is to rhyme or reason with this show. Clearly it is not about yjr singing. Would they care if I quit watching? Probably not, but that's what I'm doing. One vote per person is what it should be, but then it's all about money, isn't it.
If the show continues to be one where the fans are voting for looks and not for their voice, I might tune out just like I did with LOST. Sundance should've been at least in the top 3 males. So sad.
Sabrina should still be there............
We, my granddaughter and her husband are really disappointed that a.j. and head are off the compatition...Really there hasn't been a really great male singer since Clay Aiken...He kept the show interesting....I just hope the males gets better...
The boys are so bad I can't stand it. The American Idols are so bad this year I hate to watch it. Only 2 girls have it. Please listen to Simon he knows what he is talking about. Paula should leave now. She doesen't know what she is saying. and when she does she says what they want to hear and so she can get them to clap. Randy to much dog dog. But he is doing alittle better . But please people, this is a singing show. Don't vote for who you only like. This is the worst American Idol for singing. Like I said just the 2 girls.
We have been faithful fans of American Idol but this last week showed that it is not about an American Idol but foolish little girls and strange people voting who they want to look at not who they want to listen. This is ridiculous. I don't know that I will watch another show.
To think of Sabrina and Jareds departure is saddening and i dont believe that its not rigged because its obvious that all girls would have a vote in for jareds looks, he was the best looking guy on there.
Let's face it neither Sundance or Sabrina were going to be the ultimate winner, but to have to endure one more week of Sanjaya is almost too much to bear. Haley is not terrible, but very blah and will not be around too much longer. This type of situation has happened in the past as well. It all works itself out, but the tour group will be adversely affected by Sabrina and Sundance being gone.
Sundance will be missed, he was very appealing and his singing was among the best. Can't understand why anyone would vote for Sanjay-his performances have been sad. And Hayley should have gone tonight with Antonella who should have been gone weeks ago.
Clearly, America got it wrong with Sabrina. She is definitely a better vocalist than Haley. When we watch the show, we must also listen! The song selections and stage presence resonates with some more than others. Even though Brandon was a background singer, I don't really felt he stood out as a premier vocalist. Remember, this is a singing competition.
I'm shocked by the Sundance versus Sanjaya vote. I thought for sure that Sanjaya would have been gone long ago. I am also surprised that Sabrina is gone over Haley. I'm really glad that Antonella is gone, because she should have been gone long ago, too. I'm not too surprised by Jared being booted. My votes go to Melinda first and then LaKesha. I agree with an earlier post that there should only be one, but no more than two votes allowed per phone number, though. It's pretty much turned into a popularity contest versus a singing contest...just look at past season results and they say it all. Of all of the past seasons, I think that Kelly Clarkson and Chris Daughtry were the only really great ones.
I was really sad when they sent Sabrina and Jared home. I do not agreed with Sanjaya and Haley being in the top 12. The one to watch is Lakisha Jones. I really think she will be the next American Idol for 2007.
Sundance was amazing, I hope he continues..I would definately buy his album. Sanjaya is a sweet kid but had NOTHING on Sundace!
i haven't really been an idol fan until this season, stangely i have been tunning in...and now i remember why i don't watch it... sundance YOU ROCK!!!!,and how sanjaya won over him is beyond me and lame!! same goes with sabrina, she deserves to be one of the top 12 and haley did not deserve that spot..she sounds like a kareoke singer... American Idol is loosing my vote as a watcher! it prooves that this is not a talent show but a popularity contest...
This is a SINGING CONTEST, the four weakest voices have been: Sanjaya, Haley, Jared and Antonella. WITHOUT QUESTION. Come on people, outnumber the teeny bopper vote and let's get on with the REAL singers.
Sanjaya still in it!!!!!! You have got to be kidding me. I guess America Outsourcing to India is paying off for him. That has got to be the only way he is still in it. They must be using those free long distance to vote for this no talent person. He never should of made it on the show at all! I can't believe Sundance was voted off. This is making no sense this year. Talent is being voted off while some weak person is still there? Sundance was my 2nd favorite and if my favorite Chris Sleigh goes before him I will never watch this show again.
I was shocked. I am a musician and American got it way wrong. If you ask me the show is not only a popularity contest now but a political one as well. I feel (as I have over the last couple of years) that the show should be 50% fan votes and 50% judge votes - like So You Think You Can Dance. We are talking about people getting a lot of press, money, fame, etc. Leave it to the professionals. This show has become a farce in my opinion. I'm done. I also think they should up the age limit to 18.
I think most of you people are on drugs. I am 51 and listen to all kinds of music and have a daughter and a son who are into music and singing and to keep Sanjaya in the compition you all must be brain dead or deaf. We are VFW members and watch every week and are getting disgusted by what we see every week with the voting. This is a singing compitition not a popularity contest. If Sanjaya is your kind of person to hang out with you have a problem. Can't wait to see the reply's. Have a great day. Don't vote anymore because you are clueless. Barry
I am speechless. Sunjaya is still in? He can't sing and he doesn't have any showmanship or entertainment value. Same thing with Haley. She is the weakest by far. Like Simon said, maybe some folks are watching the show with the sound turned off on their televisions. I just don't get it. Those two were favorites in the polls to be voted off.
Does anyone else agree that we should change how we vote so it becomes more of a singing competion than a who has more friends competiton. I cannot possibly vote for 10 people I want to stay but can most certainly vote for the one that I want to go home. These seems so unfair that I am contemplating no watching the show anymore.
As has happened on previous American Idol shows, even though some of the seemingly better performers get voted off, if they have left an impression with people who know about talent they can get scooped up and set on their way. Being British, I sometimes crawl when Simon is mean but I believe that his opinions should be noted as he is successful for a reason.I will miss Sundance......
Sundance certainly deserved to stay on this week. His good ol boy voice is pure and soulful with much future potential for growth. His personality and stage presence is warm, friendly, and I like his self-depreciating sense of humor. He obviously loves singly to crowds. He goodnaturedly took his loss as a man, But it was very disappointing to see him lose to Sanjaya whose weak voice and schizophrenic stage appearance week after week is odd. But the kid is still young and and hopefully will mature, but not on American Idol. Jared was just bland and needed to put some soul in his songs. He wasn't anything special, apart from his good looks. Why are Hally and Phil Stacy still around? Where's the justice?
sanjaya over sundance, oh come on, whats next a women president
Not really down with the "...every brown person in America..." comment from Canada. Where the heck did you pull that from?
It's a cryin' shame that Sanjaya went through over Sundance! Sanjaya's vocal ability is simply aweful; he has no power behind his songs and he always appears intimidated. There is not one performance that I've enjoyed of his so far, and it really dampens my excitement for future episodes knowing that he's still on there. My vote is for Lakisha -- I really like the "powerhouses," and she's great!
yawn...If next season is like this one kiss Idol good bye. There are only 2 real singers to watch both female
American Idol is very disappointing, it seems as though it is no longer about talent, but rather like watching a Nevada-judged boxing match. The winner gets stripped...
It's really no contest as the above blogger said...it'll be between Melinda and Lakisha. That is, of course, IF America votes for the talent. I hope they do. This isn't a popularity contest. It's a singing competition. Get it right America.
Sanjaya is soooooooo boring, come on get him out of there. Sundance was ment to be in, I am shocked.
I really do not believe that Sanjaya appeals to the younger crowd of teenager girls. At least, the weak singers in the past have more of a loveable personality. Sanjaya is just there as a waste of space. He should be gone. Sabrina should be there.
I cannot believe that Sanjaya is still there. This show needs some very serious help in their voting methods. Sanjaya if you read this quit now and save face, because you are not the strongest singer and you will not make it to the finals. If you do, it not because you are a great singer and looks can only take you so far. Sabrina should have been in that seat; sorry she is the better singer and Haley should not be there, she will not make the final cut. Antonella go find a good modeling agency and you will make it big there, your hot.
Holy....Americans have completely lost their minds. Not only are they stupid, but also deaf. Wow, Sabrina, who I thought should be in the finals gets voted off! Personally, this year's talent is limited. The guys should all go home. Compared to the men of the past (Rueben, Bo, Elliot, Chris D)...uh hello, they were talented, not this year's crew. And then there's the brown boy who is staying....that was the final blow for me. I just stopped watching as of this moment. Good luck Melinda - I hope you win.
I agree, one vote per person. Probably won't do it, but it would make for a little reason. I do agree tho it is going to be between LaKisha and Melinda. Wow, what talent!!
I'm sorry Sundance is gone...he had personality. I actually tried to vote for Sanjaya, and I'm not a teenie bopper, but I AM a mom and I thought the judges were just horrible to him, esp Simon. Good grief, it's like watching the Christians going to the lions! And they're only showing us what we want to see. (Which one was Sabrina??? I missed the show tonight)
This was very disappointing tonight. Sanjaya and Haley should have been gone tonight. Please I hope that next week Sanjaya will be gone he does not deserve to be on American Idol any longer. Sundance, Sabrina and Jared should be one of the twelve. It was very disapointing tonight.
I'm glad that the bare naked lady is gone. She had no tatent at all
Yes, it looks more like a personality and likability contest now. People seem to forget the talent part. The judges keep saying,' This is a singing competition' but actually it's the popularity that counts. If things keep going this way the success and originality of this show will wane so it's upto the producers to take note.
I think the male finalist was fair. Sanjaya does have the weakest voice. but last nite he did sing better than sundance. Like The judges every nite 'you have to sing better than the other person'... and Unfortunately Sanyaja was better than Sundance last night. For the girls Sabrina should have been in.
Sabrina and Sundance should have been Haley and Sanjaya....but I don't think any of these 4 would have made it all the way anyhow...just a game....we know who it's going to be....imho
Tonight reminds me of last season when Daughtry was voted off and then again when taylor Hicks won. American Idol needs to make sure their sponsors are targeting young girls. Middle aged rockers need to learn how to text message quicker and have more patience when the phone is busy!
I think we have a computer voting scandal on our hands again with Sanjaya. If just the peoples vote for the best singer was happeninghe would not be there. I think maybe Ameican Idol is going to have to reregulate the voting to stop this CHEATING!!! But hey then again people are watching to see if he leaves. so it does get the ratings up there. I know I watch and pray he is out of there!! I think the judges are wanting him gone too. Who knows maybe next week he will actually try to sing, but why should he, he will stay just because he's indian.
