'American Idol' tough to predict

Predicting who will go home on the "American Idol" results show each week can be tough. It's a challenge because you can't simply choose the worst singers -- you have to picture the voting audience and try and determine whose fans will be out in frantic force.

Our office predictions tonight were unanimous on only one singer: Jared Cotter. It was no surprise to us when he was the first to be cut. He just didn't stand out, to us or to the judges. When even gentle Paula delivers almost nothing but negative comments, you know you're in trouble.

I also felt that Sabrina Sloan would be packing her bags. Her singing voice was fine, and judge Simon Cowell put her among his top four women in a strong field, but he also compared her song to those heard in "a hotel resort performance." One wonders how many hotel singers Simon has heard in his life -- he's always comparing someone's song to a bad lounge singer, yet really, he doesn't seem like the kind of guy to hang in the Duluth Radisson, waiting for the after-dinner entertainment. While Sabrina's voice alone would beat out such singers as Haley Scarnato, she didn't make her personality stand out. Charm: 1. Vocal chops: 0.

I honestly didn't believe Antonella Barba would go home, but for all the wrong reasons. Has any singer this season received more press attention, even if most of it was unwanted? The racy photos that are supposedly of Barba have people buzzing. Her name recognition alone has to be about the highest among the current crop of "Idol" wannabes. The fact that she did get booted, and not Haley or Jordin Sparks, makes the conspiracy theorists in all of us come out. Could "American Idol" be messing with the results, thinking they didn't need Barba on the show, especially now that people are pointing out the double standard that kept her on the show and booted Frenchie Davis? Inquiring minds do wonder. Her leaving was deserved, but it was still surprising.

The other shocker from Thursday's results show involved the men. Sundance Head, he of the chin-fro and self-deprecating jokes about his weight, seemed like one of those singers who could coast on his personality and fanbase for weeks to come. Don't forget that much was made at the auditions of the fact that he has a famous father, singer Roy Head. But even if he didn't, there's that memorable cowboyesque nickname (his real name is Jason). Anything that helps your name stick in fans' minds these days gains you votes. Does Brandon Rogers have more of a fanbase than Sundance? Does Phil Stacey?

Apparently, because the sun went down on Sundance. Which meant that 17-year-old Sanjaya Malakar, whose voice is obviously weak, had a groundswell of fans who turned out to vote to keep him around. It's not that hard to understand, really. No one can text-message and dial a phone faster than teenage and preteen girls, and no singer on the show is better suited to be beloved by young women than Sanjaya.

But Sanjaya would do well to remember another young "Idol" male: Kevin Covais from last season. Covais had similar charms to Sanjaya -- he was young, cute, and eager, although his voice couldn't stack up to the older singers. Covais made it to the final 12, and then shocked many by making it to the top 11. (Some credit "Vote for the Worst.com" with keeping him in that long.) But he was gone the next week, and before he left, had to endure some caustic comments from Simon Cowell that could not have been easy for anyone, let along a teen, to hear in front of millions of people.

Sanjaya is still singing, but his road is only likely to get tougher from here on out.

Sanjaya is supported by particular number of particular people who will vote for him no matter what. It is enough votes to keep him in 12, probably in 10, not enough when votes are divided by 9. Had they counter votes against, or voted for best semi-finalists as 3 years ago, those pityful singer would never have passed early stage. My hope, Symon will get another Taylor this year, to get smarter.
If Antonella had stayed much longer, it would have really turned American Idol into a popularity contest encouraging more racy pictures on the internet from other contestants for publicity. That would have set a bad example. I am glad that is over with.
As an educator, it would be great to see the American public vote on the basis of voice quality and singing ability since THIS IS a singing competition. The judges are doing their best to bring to light the strengths and weaknesses of each contestant. The public needs to listen to them carefully as they do have the experience and qualifications to back up their comments, regardless of how candid they are. America vote accordingly! Given this, Sanjaya doesn't belong in the top 12.
Sanjaya should have been given his walking papers tonight. He has the look of a deer in the headlights every time he gets on stage. Like he knows he can't measure up to his competitors. Sundance, while inconsistent, at least had personality and charm. Disappointing result. Antonella being voted out makes it only slightly less so. She should have never made it this far, racy pics or no.
Sanjaya is really, really cute. He eats the camera like no one else on that show ever has, even Ace didn't come across like Sanjaya. He's got talent, but he's too young. He needs to stop listening to his sister or whoever is helping him pick out songs, and find his own style. His voice is good enough, not to win, but to stay a little longer, but only if he finds the right songs. The girls need to check out old Linda Ronstadt CDs to find songs, and it wouldn't hurt a few of the boys to check out Don Henley, Elvis Costello, to find great songs that require some range. Has anyone attempted Willie Nelson/ Patsy Cline's "Crazy" on the show? A few of the women certainly have it in them to nail it.
"The fact that she did get booted, and not Haley or Jordin Sparks, makes the conspiracy theorists in all of us come out." Jordin? Seriously? She was never in the slightest bit of danger. She has a huge fan base and while someone like Stephanie might be a better singer, I guarantee Jordin will stick around longer because she has the "it" quality and is a lot more memorable. Haley did deserve to go, but not Jordin.
Sabrina shouldn't have been cut she was in my top three females
Was elated that Antonella was FINALLY voted off!! Sabrina was a shock and so was Sundance. Must be something about call centers that keep Sanjaya in the loop.
I quit. After tonight's result show, I refuse to watch. Sanjaya is still there? Haley is still there? American definitely got it wrong. They should try closing their eyes and listening to Sanjaya sing, maybe then they'd truly hear his lack of talent and do the honorable thing by voting him off. You know, the judges should be able to veto America when they get it so obviously wrong. Simon should say something like "Sorry America, but I've got to step in here", then he should send Sanjaya home. Bye bye luv. After all, America got it wrong before...remember Ruben Studdard? Bring back the wild card, guys. Or better yet, just to shake it up, every 3 weeks or so, the judges should decide who goes then bring in a wild card. They'd get longer out of the season. I like that Paula has graduated from telling everyone how pretty they are and is commenting on their talent for a change. You go girl. Oh, and Simon, leave Ryan alone.
if it was about looks sanjaya wouldnt be there, just like he can sgin he is hard to look at. sorry but sundance is much better on the eyes!!!! oh my he (sanjaya) should of gone home long time ago.
Blake's my pick for the winner. Talk about marketable!!!
I think Sanjaya is this year’s Kevin….Sanjaya will stay in the game for the "wow, how come he is still there factor" just like Kevin last year. And each week you watched to see if eventually this was the week the inevitable would happen....keeps us all watching for the “When factor”…..
Melinda and LaKisha in the final...no one else even comes close...I do like Gina, even if she comes in third she will sell records...
American Idol is not just a singing contest. It is a contest where Americans pick their favorite entertainer to "idolize." Singing is only one part of a complete package for an entertainer. They also need to dance, show emotion (and make us feel emotion), look attractive (or at least interesting), and generally make us want to watch them. Sabrina and Jared were good singers, but they were boring. Antonella couldn't sing very well, but she was entertaining. Sanjaya is a good kid and people like him, which is enough to get in the top 12 even though only one of his songs (the last one) was any good. There are lots of great singers in the world that nobody cares about. There are lots of extremely popular singers that don't sing that well -- Gwen Stefani, Kid Rock just to name a couple. Popularity is more than just the ability to stand on a stage and belt out a song on key.
Until the producers change the voting system, and have the voters vote for the person to GO HOME each week rather than win, then move it back to who wins on the final, it will always be a joke. Those who have nothing better to do than hit redial.. if our votes were to vote OFF the worse singer each week, I think you'd see a real talent show.
lol! This is funny, if America can Vote for George Bush then why not for ANYone of the performers? I wish there were half as many people concerned about the country. In any event, only melinda is the true idol here. She can sing and has a controlled voice. Whats so great about Lakisha? She screams way too often. Singing melodiously and Screaming at a high pitch are different.
I am really surprised that Sanjaya with his insipid voice has managed to make it to the top 12! Its time America realised that this is a singing contest and vote accordingly. By no means can sanjaya be termed as 'cute' even. Wonder where he is getting the votes from.
I think that Sanjaya has to make good on this opportunity he's been given. I don't know why but I've liked him since the entire competition began. He's got a great voice but is too scared to show it off. If he just picked a song that showed his talents off more and if he sang a little bit louder, people wouldn't so negative towards him
Having been to all the A.I. concerts, I will not waste my money attending this years if Sanjaya is in the top 10. I think most of the votes for him are pity votes after Simon has been mean. But lets get real, this is a business that wont make money out of pity. I want to be entertained not help someone feel better! I only vote for a contestant if I feel I would want to listen to their music on my ipod. Or hear them on the radio, think about it, could you stand to listen to his voice on all the stations flooding us like they did with the past winners songs! Please vote for talent, not because you feel bad for them.
This group may be the killer for the Idol post-season tour. I can't see going to a show where close to half the talent is poor. Lakisha, melinda, I could listen to all night but when most of the guys are on it would be I-pod time. I think they concentrated too much on the clowns in the auditions and forgot the talented ones.
I personally think that the voters only got two votes right this week. Jared (although he wasn't that bad) deserved to be gone and so did Antonella (not only just cause of her pictures but because she couldn't sing). Hayley and Sanjaya will be 1st and 2nd to be voted off because they both lack personality on stage and a great voice!
Have to agree with Debbie in Fort Worth. Sanjaya should have been the FIRST one voted off. What gives?? As Simon constantly reminds us, this is a SINGING competition! Get real! The voting is completely skewed. My advice? One vote per contestant for each phone number. That is the OINLY way to keep it fair and real. Listen up, producers!!
Sundance was my favorite guy. Very disappointed to see him go. I'm disappointed that this isn't about singing anymore. Sanjaya can go and Sundance can come back. He can actually sing. Remember singing competetion?
UNBELIEVABLE! That's all I can say. I guess there are a lot of deaf voters out there! I can't believe Sanjaya beat out Sundance! And Haley over Sabrina?!! Are the people forgetting this is about SINGING?!!!!
This is utterly ridiculous. As a girl in her older teens, I fail to see how anyone could find Sanjaya attractive (looks or personality-wise). He is annoying, has no stage presence, and can't sing. It seems like all the teen girls would be more inclined to vote for Blake Lewis...he's more contemporary, has a great voice and personality, and is quite attractive.
Sundance and Sabrina should be in the top 12, no question about it. America got it only half right tonight. Of course Melinda shoud win, she has, by far, the most incredible voice...Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald come to mind...but the young people nowadays don't even know what a good voice is. Unfortunately, the are the ones voting. Sanjayah? What the heck is he doing there in the finals? Sounds like a high school musical!
There is always one spot for a teenager who can't sing like the rest. That spot this year went to Sanjaya. Does he belong? Yes. The first year that Carmen Rasmussen got to the top 6 I thought the results were rigged. Then when John Stevens did the same thing, I realized there was an audience out there for cute teenagers. Luckily, they seem to disappear faster now--Michaela and Kevin Covais didn't get nearly as far. But it seems like there always is one in the pack-- so Sanjaya belongs.
I think that they should vote the way they do on Dancing With The Stars. Make the callers vote only count for a percentage of the total.
We are all talking about who should and shouldn't be in the top 12. I have even seen comments from people saying that they will no longer watch Idol anymore because of who has been kicked off.. blah blah blah. It is the American population's fault. Sabrina was an extremely talented singer. She should NOT have been cut tonight. It doesn't make sense to me because America does vote on popularity and looks, and Sabrina seemed to have both to me. America, you are making the wrong decisions!!
Melinda and LaKesha are neck in neck (even though poor Melinda looks like she is missing some of her neck...) I like Melinda, then Lakisha, then the girl with the red streak and NONE of the guys. Let's start voting on VOICE AND SHOWMANSHIP America...
Sabrina and Sundance got screwed, they are far better than Haley and Sanjaya. America blew it bad. It was obvious on the judges faces.
Lakisha you rock, definately the next american idol. IDOL being key- she is a single mom, with a voice that melts everyone and I get the goose bumps . America has to VOTE LAKISHA. what happened tonight defeats my idea of talent SANJAY has to go home can not sing, AMERICA , he can not sing !
No one is saying it, but I think Jordan should win this season. Melinda is by far the best and most deserving, but she is probably not "hip" enough.
I am very disappointed that Haley is still in it. Her song choices are horrible, and she sings them more like a contemporary Christian artist than a pop star. And based on the last three weeks of performances, Sanaya is way out of his league. In fact, I don't think many of these guy have a leg to stand on. Yeah, there is that guy with the beat box, and the JT impersonator, but the ladies are killing it! Most of the guys will be out sooner rather than later. And don't rule Gina out too quickly. She has a big voice and will appeal to a wide audience. If I could vote i would, but since i can't everyone else out there will have to do what it takes to make sure that the best voices go forward. And if you didn't vote, you can't complain.
I was shocked to see haley is stay as well as Sanjaya
It's just got all so boring with no one having great personalities. The producers need to 'spice' it up a bit like bring back one of the rejects from last season.
I agree that Sundance deserved to stay. However, while the show made it seem that it was all between Sanjaya and Sundance, that's only the order they announced it. If you look at Chris Richardson vs. Sanjaya, for example, I would have sent Chris home. Sanjaya is just likeable. He's actually got great pitch, too, even though he definitely isn't Idol material. He won't last long, obviously. Besides, none of the guys stand a chance this year anyway.
I do not understand why everyone is beating up Sanjaya. I he should of stayed. He is not as terrible as you are making him sound. I will admit he does lack power, but I agree with an earlier comment last night he was better than Sundance and he was better than Phil. Sundance was better than Phil, but Phil is still there. I like Haley. I also like Sabrina, but the last two weeks were not strong, just okay, I am not surprised that Sabrina is gone. No matter how frustrating the votes may make most of you, you are still watching and I am sure you will keep watching. I never have voted on strictly singing only. The "idol" has to have personality too. Even now I do not really like Kelly Clarkson, and I never liked Fantasia, even though I know she can sing. I just did not like her style of singing. As far as Sanjaya goes as long as he in the mix I will keep voting for him.
I was sad to see Sundance go, but I didn't disagree with the America's vote, because it is a "what have you done for me lately" kinda vote. Sundance can sing well, but he didn't do a good job with Pearl Jam, and Sanjaya DID do a good job with his version of "Waiting for the World to Change", even if he isn't the best singer. Sundance has been doing consistantly bad, even though you can tell he is a great singer. I am sure he will have a record deal waiting for him; This just isn't he route. Glad to see Antonella gone. Sabrina was a good singer, but as someone said earlier, very unlikable... This is not only a singing contest, this is a POP singing contest... i.e...PoPULAR music
I really hate to see Sanjaya get such a bad rap. He may be young, but his voice is great and he's really consistent. The only thing he needs to do, is come out a bit stronger! He totally can do it. We are behind him. I think he's better than everyone's giving him credit for. AND!, I think he'll last another week or so. He's much more enjoyable to listen to then Haley, or Brandon!

I see a lot of people that have commented use the pharse "its a popularity contest". I base my votes on the contestants actual SINGING. My two very faves are Chris Sligh and Melinda Doolitte. They aren't the 'best looking' but they sure can sing.It made me sick to my stomach that ppl kelpt Antello on because 'shes pretty' or that they 'liked her sexy pics'.I think America did well voting off Antenello and Jared.Ok Sundance had potential to be a good singer I wanted him on.Sorry but Sanjaya is a sweetheart but the boy can't sing. Haley uh her over Sabrina..Please ppl. I also wanna comment on the limiting voting if they make it were you can only vote once ,ppl will still find ways around it (other house lines, cell phones). If we vote on the computer you can use friends or familys phone numbers) it won't work .The only way to get your fave through is to vote the whole 2 hours.
I love Sundance, he was the best male singer, good luck!. It is not a singer competition..... I just stopped watching American Idol, bye.
Didn't catch Thursday's show, but all this info was enough to let me know what happened. I CAN'T believe Sanjaya is still on. Good Lord, America: vote according to vocal talent! As for earlier comments about him eating up the camera, is this person blind?! I think everyone knows that it's really down to Melinda & Lakisha...if we VOTE. May the force be with you. :p
Sundance voted off?, Sabrina voted off?...Simon was on the mark when he said, "They had their TV's turned down". It is sad that teenage girls can vote for Sanjaya for his "cuteness", Sundance may not have it made it, but certainly was a better singer, more entertaining than Sanjaya. Sabrina...I really liked her, she was cute, poised, and had a good voice..Haley is cute as well..but as far as a "singing" competition....Sabrina is mucg better.
This year is a joke! There are only two really good ones left(they voted off the 3rd one last night). I am not sure how a show with no real competition can go as long as this one. They need to take a lesson from Nashville Star and start the show with 10 or 12 finalists "with talent". The only reason AI has so many viewers is because the other networks won't aire anything worthwhile opposite it(and they are reruns).
No one seems to have picked up on the Hawaii Vote factor. Like Jasmine Trias from a previous season, Sanjaya once lived there. Just like Jasmine we can expect Sanjaya to stay well past his welcome.
OK...Here it goes. To the producers of American Idol. Are you listening to the people who watch your show??? Do you really care??? The people have been telling you every season the change the voting system so that it really can BE ABOUT the singing but is seems that you turn a deaf ear. I used to stand up for the show and tell people it wasn't rigged; but something else seriously wrong is going on here...The only question remaining is; will you correct it too late and watch the mighty American Idol crash & burn!!! AHS San Diego
This just proves the point - again - that voters must call in for the top people because no one is safe. That was the last thing that Ryan said on Wednesday, and his words were prophetic. Vote for your top 3-4 people and insure that they stay in the running.
I am a Melinda fan. She just shines with that smile of hers. I do love Lakisha and I am sure she will get plently of attention thereafter even if she doesn't make "American Idol." Antonella .... thank goodness she's gone. It was maddening to see her stay in the last two episodes. She'll be back in Playboy or Maxim, etc., which is fine, she is just not a singer. Way surprised by the Sabrina elimination. She has star written all over her, and the camera loves her, we'll see her soon too.
