'American Idol' brackets

I posted last night about how "American Idol" can be compared to the NCAA tourney brackets, but let's take that a little further. If the "Idol" contestants were going head-to-head in individual matchups, who would be the Cinderella, and who'd be an upset victim? Here's my take.

Say this all began before Brandon's elimination. Here's how your singers are seeded; obviously, you may disagree with some of the rankings, but it's as good a guess as any.

#1: Melinda
#2: LaKisha
#3: Jordin
#4: Stephanie
#5: Gina
#6: Chris Sligh
#7: Blake
#8: Chris Richardson
#9: Phil
#10: Haley
#11: Sanjaya
#12: Brandon

First round: #1 Melinda faces off against #12 Brandon, and her powerhouse voice blows away the background singer. #2 LaKisha takes on #11 Sanjaya, and all the fan bases and "Vote for the Worst" campaigns in the world can't save him there.

#3 Jordin takes on #10 Haley, and this could be a Cinderella upset. Jordin is amazing for a teen, and Haley's had her problems, but she's moving up fast. Give this one to Haley just to shake things up.

#9 Phil takes on #4 Stephanie, and it's not that much of a contest, Stephanie wins. But #5 matchups are legendarily troubled, and Gina struggles and finally gets eliminated against #8 Chris Richardson.

That leaves a battle of the boys: #6 Chris Sligh vs. #7 Blake. Chris's fans (who call themselves "Fro Patrol," after his bushy hair and Taylor Hicks' Soul Patrol) turn out in force, but it's Blake who moves on, in an extremely close contest.

FIRST-ROUND SUMMARY:
ADVANCING:
Melinda, LaKisha, Haley, Stephanie, Chris Richardson, Blake
BYE-BYE: Brandon, Sanjaya, Jordin, Phil, Gina, Chris Sligh

SECOND ROUND
Lowest-ranked Haley takes on Melinda, and it's still really no contest; Melinda wins.

Second-lowest-ranked Chris Richardson battles LaKisha, but she, too, glides into the final three.

In the most interesting battle of the round, #4 Stephanie takes on #7 Blake. Let's call this one for the Cinderella team: Blake's beatboxing (judiciously used, of course) and originality helps him pull out a shocker of a win over the talented Stephanie.

SECOND-ROUND SUMMARY:
ADVANCING: Melinda, LaKisha, Blake
BYE-BYE: Haley, Chris Richardson, Stephanie

THIRD ROUND
Three singers are left, so top-ranked Melinda gets a bye. It doesn't really matter, because Blake has gone as far as he can go. He loses to LaKisha, and it's really not even close.

THIRD-ROUND SUMMARY:
ADVANCING:
Melinda, LaKisha
BYE-BYE: Blake

CHAMPIONSHIP
It doesn't always happen in the NCAA, but it happens here in our fantasyland: The two top-ranked singers meet in the finals, LaKisha vs. Melinda, mano a mano. In the closest finale since the Clay-Ruben contest that's still being debated fiercely, Melinda draws on the maturity and experience she's developed through the competition and pulls out a victory.

Melinda Doolittle is your NCAA champion -- I mean, "American Idol."

Well, that's ONE way it could go. What are your scenarios?

I agree with your analogy except for one. There is no way Jordin will lose to Haley. No Way. I think Jordin will also beat Blake. She will stand at either #2 or #3. Heck, she may win it all. Jordin is my NCAA champ or AI champ.
Beg to differ, Winnie (and Jordin-ites). While talented, she doesn't have the mature chops to carry it through to the end like Melinda. Barring a "fans get complacent and don't call" early exit, my bet's on Mel to take it all.
i have seen every episode in EVERY season, and i have just a couple things to say. first, this reminds me of the season Fantasia won. the runner up was equally good, which brings up this season...we have Melinda and LaKisha...both could win! second, if Sanjaya has been in the bottom the last couple of times, and the judges feel he isn't doing as well as the others, nor does he work with their ideas to improve the following week, i don't believe he truly wants to win. there were plenty of other contestants (both male/female) who were better vocalists who should have made it through. i think next season AI should let the BEST 12 through and not 6 of each sex.
yeah that jordin sparks will come out the winner she is fantastic
I don't think the American public will keep Lakisha no matter how good she is. Her stage apperance is much less appealing than others. Melinda has really improved her looks, it will be between her and Jordan in the end. My dark horse is Gina.

This is excatly how I think it will end up. Melinda is a fierce force to be reckoned with, and although I also really like LaKeisha, she just isn't as polished as Melinda. I can't wait to hear Melinda sing again next week, right now, she is the only real reason I watch, that, and being curious as to when Sanjaya and Haley will finally be sent home!
I agree with Gael too Melinda to take it all but also with Winnie, Stockton CA Haley to win over Jordan! Not even in the same league with her or Blake.
"Test Pattern tunes into television, entertainment and pop culture links, gossip and idle chat from around the Web." Can you PLEASE blog about something OTHER than American Idol for a change? Despite its ridiculous ratings, there are a few people out there who despise the show, pop culture phenomenon or not.
I think that either Melinda and Lakisha could be succeptible to getting 'Daughtry'ed' this year. Meaning that people might just assume they are safe every week and eventually one of them might end up going home. This could leave the door open for Jordin to pull off a 'DeGarmo' and end up in the finals. As long as Chris 'Timberlake' Richardson doesn't win..then i will be happy. I keep looking in the audience for any sign of Cameron Diaz. Omg..i watch way too much television. :(
I think the race is between Melinda and Lakisha. However, its clear that Melinda has the polish of a professional who has been on stage often. Lakisha has the stage presence and look of a talented woman who has spent most of her singing time in a gospel venue. She is probably the better singer, but will she sell more records? Its all about the money, after all. Regardless, both women will get recording contracts and probably a couple R&B movies like Jennifer Hudson.
Jordin Sparks is a fake! The American public should recognize this and vote her off. I know this is a singing competition, but I've watched her from the beginning and think she fakes crying sometimes and she doesn't seem real. Also, she doesn't have the greatest voice or stage presence and personally I didn't think her performance this week was that wonderful. I can't imagine buying a CD of hers - it would be a Waste!
Al in Ohio: See here: http://testpattern.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2007/03/13/88496.aspx And of course Monday's link won't be Idol-related. But you have to expect a little overkill on the first week of eliminations for the #1 show in the nation.
Lakisha, third at best only due her presence, look out here comes jordin, could be the winner but has to beat out the best of the best Melinda. All three are winners already but for American Idol they need the youthfull abitions jordan brings
I think the girls rock.I will tell you how this will play out.Melinda and Lakeesha will cancel each other out and Jordin Sparks will be the next american idol.
Why am I the only one complaining about the seeding? Stephanie is not that popular, I think she and Blake should switch (Blake #4, Stephanie #7).
I have to agree with Al about the Idol Overload. But thank you, Gael, for letting us know that you will be writing about other subjects soon.
My scenario would be that Melinda wins, but people just assume that Lakisha and Jordin will make it through. This will cause Gina, not a favorite but still well-liked, to rise above them and gain some ground. I really believe that she's got a lot more to show than she has been. She's going to kick it in to gear for the final rounds and get up closer to Melinda's level.
I love, I love, I love Melinda! Nevertheless, the girl has got-ta get a grip on the "oh-my-goodness-am-I-that-good?" look each time the judges voice their opinions. C'mon! look at her! She always has that shocked face and gets sooooo emotional. But I still love her anyway. Lakisha is good and she'll be up their with Melinda to the end. Jordin, sorry, no, she will not outlast Stephanie. She's very pretty, has that gorgeous smile but she's out of their league when it comes to singing. As Simon always says, "this IS a singing competition". I do enjoy listening to these guys: Blake, Chris R. and Phil; but I don't think it's their time this Idol Season. It's going to be a female to win it this year--you just watch.
I'm glad to read that people don't think it is necessarily all sewn up. There may be some surprises yet.
the whole thing is stupid. the top 3 females are voices of the past nothing new there, you hear one you hear them all. I have hundreds if albums of voices the the same as top3. so who is the winner, none. Sanjaya will record and make millions, and i will the first to buy one, but he has to do right away before his star falls.
Interesting ranking. JoeMusic has one too, and he's always right!: 1. LaKisha 2. Melinda 3. Stephanie 4. Blake 5. Jordin 6. Chris Sligh 7. Chris Richardson 8. Phil 9. Gina 10. Sanjaya 11. Haley 12. Brandon Stay tuned - it's gonna be a bumpy ride for the guys.
I’m gonna wager that JoeMusic will lay the smackdown on TP and have a higher percentage of correct Idol boots by the end of the season

...
Melinda will most likely win. She rather reminds me of Katherine McPhee. Lakisha is another Fantasia. Gina is a more refined version of Nikki from season 1. No one else stands out at all this year. As a matter of fact, AI has lost it's magic and I say that as a fan (at least until now). The powers that be need to stop grabbing every aging singer they can find who has a current CD and telling the contestants to sing Diana (or Barry or whoever). The guys didn't stand a chance this week and they didn't have much of a one to begin with. I happened to catch a rerun of Season 1 the other night when there were 7 contestants left - Kelly, Nikki, Ryan, etc. and I can honestly say that it was more satisfying than watching this year live. Next season I will not watch until it gets down to the last 2 or 3 (if then). I hate to say it but I think American Idol's best days have come and gone........
Anyone who counts Stephanie out is barking up the wrong tree. She is the true dark horse of the contest, more stylish than LaKisha, a better singer than Jordin, and as poised as Melinda. Stephanie could be the spoiler.
While I do think Melinda and Lakisha are the best vocally, I don't think either should win. Like last season with my favorite Chris Daughtry, I think Blake desrves to win. He sings well, he sings modern. He has already gone the extra mile to really mix up the music he sings as well, along with the beat boxing its obvious he has multiple musical talents. He has the look and marketability. He personally sounds like Maroon 5 to me. I am sick of R&B and thats all we are gonna get from Lakisha or Melinda.
I completely agree with Jen about the oh- my goodness- am i that good look that Melinda gives every week.... i think she is a good singer but if that look is starting to turn me against her. It is one thing to be humble but what she is doing is just overkill. She is trying to get people to vote for her by making it look like she truly doesnt believe that she is good and that she needs the votes to prove it to herself
Here's a scenario for you. How about you seed it in the same manner but decide the winner with a no holds barred, Ultimate Fighting Championship spin? Let's use the same rankings: #1: Melinda #2: LaKisha #3: Jordin #4: Stephanie #5: Gina #6: Chris Sligh #7: Blake #8: Chris Richardson #9: Phil #10: Haley #11: Sanjaya #12: Brandon Round 1: #1 Melinda VS #12 Brandon, battle of the background singers. This round is quick, as Brandon uses his piano playing honed fingers to slap Melinda into submission. Upset! #2 Kiki vs #11 Sanjaya. Kiki lets loose with a mothers pent up fustration. Sanjaya doesn't know what hit him. Kiki moves on. #3 Jordan vs #10 Haley. Jordan, the football fan, tackles Haley for a loss. Haley weeps her way home. #4 Stephanie vs #9 Phil. With his military background, Phil pulls out a close victory when the battle turns to hair pulling. #5 Gina VS #8 CR. This is the most intriguing match up of the bunch, but the rock and roller slides past the slimmed down football player in overtime. #6 Chris Sligh VS Blake. Unfortunatly, Blake trips over his beatbox and eliminates himself. Chris moves on. Round 1 summary: Advancing - Brandon, LaKisha, Jordan, Phil, Gina and Chris Sligh ByeBye - Melinda, Sanjaya, Haley, Stephanie, Chris Richardson and Blake Round 2.#12 Brandon VS #6 Chris. Brandon was lucky to have faced the meek Melinda in the first round and is quickly bounced by the hungrier Chris. #2 LaKisha VS #5 Gina. Neither of these 2 powerhouses will give an inch and the battle rages on into the next show. Gina will finally pull out the victory in a hotly contested split-decision. #3 Jordan vs #9 Phil. Once again, Jordan's explosive football style surprises the military-trained Phil. However, Phil turns the tables and mounts a furious comeback. But in the end, it's deemed a draw, and both are eliminated. Round 2 summary: Advancing - Chris, Gina Bye, Bye - Brandon, Kiki, Jordan, and Phil Championship round: #5 Gina VS #6 Chris Sligh. Having come this far, the rocker with the attitude will not be denied. With a flurry of combinations, Gina the rocker sends Chris packing because his daddy said to never hit a girl. And the winner and new Champion is.. Gina Glockson
I think its too early to stake claim on a winner. remember, they have not had a variety of music to sing from yet, that is, AI is picking the beat. That being said, how will Lakisha and Melinda compare to let's say "Pat Benitar" (Gina's groove) or "The culture club", (finally sanjaya prevails).... hehe. Anyhow, let's just see how these amazing two rock out when its not there "forte" as the beat of the night.
Every year people think that their favorite is safe whether they vote or not. Then they get voted off. Alot of people were all bent out of shape over Constantine and Mandisa (didn't care for either of them personally)and didn't understand how they were voted off as early as they were. I think that may end up happening to Lakisha or Melinda this year. Not that it should, but something crazy always happens like that....If things are how they should be I agree with the top three being Melinda, Lakisha, and Blake (at least he is original), and Melinda will take it all.....who knows, the whole thing might be rigged anyways...
Um, Gael? Just wondering -- is your T.V. tuner broken? Judging from your last several columns, it seems as if the only show you are able to watch is Idol..... There are other (less vapid) things on television...
i wish sanjaya would go home.......
I think you have it pretty close. Gina needs to be a little higher, like #3 or #4.
I think you're smoking something. Haley in the top 6? The lady's a WEDDING SINGER! She has a mole on her cheek the size of Texas! What show are you watching? She can't cry and carry on every week. That didn't even work for Antonella. Replace her w/ Sanjaya in this spot. I'm not going to even go into why.
does it really matter. just know if lakisha wins the American Idol spot she will not make it big for the next year and if Melinda wins she will not be a big hit for the next year. Who ever loses will be the real superstar. Simon's company does not know how to market African Americans who can sing. Look at Ruben, Fantasia, Both are starting to be better known after the AI contract is done.
Glad to see you have Melinda on top. So do professional bookmakers. The odds are in favor of Melinda winning. I see her improving each week. There will be surprises, but Melinda has it in the bag I believe. Why? Because the judges love her.
Gina and Blake will be your final 2. They aren't the best, but they are the most marketable. AI will figure out a way to get the folks who they can sell after the show in the top.
If there is a god, and all is right and just in the universe, Melinda should win. However all the comments are correct in that Lakisha could cancel out Melinda (or vice versa) when votes come in. One of them could get voted off allowing Jordin to sneak into the final two. However, Melinda and Lakisha are so much better than everyone else in the competition that even if Melinda gets bumped due to a split vote with Lakisha, Lakisha will beat Jordin hands down. Melinda and Lakisha are ranked one and two this early for a reason... they are head and shoulders above everyone in the competition and it should come down to them with Melinda winning a close battle.
Melinda would certainly beat Lakisha. Lakisha is very talented, but her appearance will hurt any chances of winning. Melinda is no model either, but she has a much more polished and friendly look. Somebody like Gina has a chance to make a run because she is talented, cute and seemingly has a large fanbase.
Ok...maybe Melinda can sing the best..BUT..where do we all see her in the industry? People will hate me for this, but our good friend Taylor Hicks ended up being a big let down in the industry. Every one voted for him because he was fun to see on stage, but when it canme time to buy his cd...no one wanted it. Its all about who is marketable..and thats where Blake will dominate and others will fail. This year will be a Chris Daughtry situation all over agian. Melinda will win..no one will buy her cd..Blake will get 3rd place and hit the charts.
LaKisha and Melinda will be a toss-up. I hope LaKisha wins because I think it will be BETTER for Melinda in the long run. Jordin and Gina round off the top 4 and I think Phil and Chris S will round out the top 6. But, I don't really care because I don't vote anymore since they started allowing all these "old" people in. And secretly...I'm rooting for Jordin to win and Gina for 2nd but I know I'm just DREAMING!!!
I think that the "divas" this year will do a season 3. While Jordin is certainly on her way, she can sing Pat Benetar, and, well, I'm not really sure if Lakisha or Melinda would be able to pull it off as covincingly [Although they are the most talented vocally]. Stephanie sound WAY too much like Beyonce to pull through that far, so I see her being axed first of the three. Then, without a doubt, Melinda and Lakisha are going to trip over each other. As much as I'd like to think they'd be the final two, it's not realistic. Whoever pulls through will probably become the next AI. For the rest, it's a toss up, but I'm gonna assume that this will be the order: 1. Melinda/Lakisha 2. Jordin 3. Blake 4. Melinda/Lakisha 5. Gina 6/7 The Chrises 8. Stephanie 9. Haley 10. Phil 11. Sanjaya 12. Brandon That's really my best guess, for being a fan as long as I have.
You folks have to remember past seasons...Gina is the Diana Degarmo, the Vonzell Solomon, the Eliot Yamin. She is genuinely talented and brings a different style than any of the other front runners who are all female R&B/Gospel styled singers. Out of America's need for variety alone, Gina (or perhaps Jordin) will beat out LaKisha for the #2 spot...but Melinda will win! Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised to see a repeat of Mandisa/Latoya London in Lakisha's case. In which case, I think Blake (for variety alone) will be another underdog vying for a spot in the top 3.
hmm... #12 Brandon #11 Phil #10 Melinda #9 Sanjaya #8 Stephanie #7 Haley #6 Chris Sligh #5 Chris Richardson #4 Blake #3 Jordin #2 Lakisha #1 Gina Well brandon is already gone... so im right with one... next will be phil, because he is just creepy and ppl will stop liking him... unfortunately the next will be melinda doolittle... the contestants will probly have to sing country or latin... something i dont think lakisha or melinda will do well at... and lakisha will get more support than melinda... next will be Sanjaya... cuz he made it so far on a fluke... then stephanie cuz she isnt anything special... Haley wont be able to keep up with those that are still there... but may make it farther than chris sligh... chris richardson and blake lewis are interchangeable... jordin will finally have ran her race... shell be done right before the finals... lakisha will go into the finals as a favorite against gina... and black horse to win the race gina is the new american idol
I think the format of voting should change. I think you should vote of who to get rid of instead of who to keep. Or use the Grease format where up to a point the judges get to decide who to evict out of the bottom two.
As of today, I have Melinda and Blake tied for first. The rest don't show me anything better.
Jordin: She's mature beyond her years and is possibly in the top 3 as far as TALENT goes, but she's boring and always sings stuff you'd hear on a Disney movie. Blake: SHOULD be the winner b/c he's simply the coolest and can put on the best show. He has more than a voice; he has an artistic musical sense. I like when he remixes stuff, even if the judges don't. It shows that he's not a pop idol that goes through the motions. Plus, he can dance and beatbox better than any finalist ever on Idol. Chris R: possibly worse than Sanjaya. If i wanted to hear someone that nasal, I'd watch "The Nanny". Melinda: The best voice by far. Seriously, her voice is amazing. Has the personality of a mouse. Lakisha: also very talented. any other season she might win. Melinda still blows her out of the water. Top 3: Melinda, Blake, Lakisha Winner is...Melinda (it IS a singing competition) Who will sell the most albums...Blake This is very comparible to what happened in the Ruban/Clay instance. Rueban won on paper, but Clay was the real winner in terms of success.
You all talk about how Lakisha looks...have any of you noticed that Melinda has NO NECK! And it isn't any easier to watch her sing....and they both sound alike. At least Gina, Chris, and Jordin have a different sound.
I really think you people are not giving the guys enough credit! While the girls are good singers, they lack the originality of the guys...especially Blake! In my opinion, I think he is going to be the Cinderella story here and take it all! Yeah!
I still cannot believe that Sanjaya is still in the running...Somthing, sounds fishy.......
