Highlights -- and lowlights -- of "Dancing With the Stars"

I admit it, I watched Monday's premiere of "Dancing With the Stars," despite the fact that the show's about ready to be renamed "Cha cha chaing with the C-Listers." I mean, really, did you know who Shandi Finnessey was? Was anyone out there clamoring to see more of Leeza Gibbons? Are we anything but angry at Billy Ray Cyrus for bestowing "Achy Breaky Heart" upon us? And Ian Ziering?  Ian Ziering?

Viewers will have to wait a whole week to find out who gets voted off, although MSNBC.com contributor Linda Holmes has some pretty sharp guesses here. As goofy as the show is, however, it's somewhat soothing. The stars are millionaires whether they win or lose, for the most part, and they're generally pretty comfortable before the cameras. Nothing's on the line for them except a really ugly trophy. These are not the nervous teens of "American Idol" putting it out there every week. Even the judges and the hosts seem to know better than to take the show too seriously -- goofily accented judges Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli trade off trying to be goofily accented, caustic Simon Cowell, but neither of them have his harsh edge.

If I had to be serious about it, I'd note that Ian Ziering wasn't half bad, Paulina Porizkova is elegance personified, and Anton Apolo Ohno has, unsurprisingly, some really fast feet. If I had to pick who's likely to get booted next week, I'd say Billy Ray Cyrus or Leeza Gibbons. If I had to pick an early winner, I like Laila Ali's chances.

But I don't have to be serious, and so here, then, are some of my own personal highlights -- and lowlights -- from the "Dancing" premiere.

Dorkiest outfit, celebrity version: Heather Mills' weirdly two-toned raspberry and vanilla dress, which even she admitted made her "feel a bit like an ice-cream sundae."

Dorkiest outfit, pro dancer version: Two-time champ Cheryl Burke appeared to be wearing a fishing net covered with those googly eyes you buy in a craft store.

Unwisest choice of music: Ian Ziering and Burke cha cha cha'd to "Mony Mony," which has been known to spark an obscene chant when played in public.

Funniest age joke: Paulina Porizkova's partner, Alec Mazo, told the classy supermodel that "my dad has a lot of pinups of you."

Age joke that backfired: "Cheers" legend John Ratzenberger, almost 60, joked that he's about to turn 72. No one in the audience thought he was kidding.

Dance move that most resembled domestic violence: Country singer Billy Ray Cyrus had to make multiple attempts before successfully, and scarily, ripping a fake mullet off the head of his partner, Karina Smirnoff.

Worst nickname: Joey Fatone's partner, Kym Johnson, helpfully chirped of the former boy-bander, "Joey Fat One's not going to be his nickname any more!" OK, but Fatone didn't help his cause much when he followed up her statement by yelling "I need a bra!"

I truly enjoyed last nights show, I hope that Ms Ali goes all the way. I have another comment for Ms Shelia from Canada, you mean to tell me that there are no ignorant Canadians???? As an American I strongly take offense to your comment. None of us are perfect and that definately includes YOU.
I thought Billy Ray looked a little stiff as well. I think his partner is more concerned with winning the trophy than any actual teaching. Poor Billy Ray.
What else can you call Heather Mills? Professional gold-digger? I think they're being kind calling her what they called her - and she does work for charity. Hooray for John R. - he does all us aging baby boomers proud! At least he's giving it a go and not giving up. And, I'm one of those who've been living under a rock, because I have no idea who Shandi Finnessey is. I will be watching with the rest of you. And, please, don't anybody take it seriously! Canada, I'll add my comment to the others: please don't lump all of us US-ites with one celebrity. Some of us do have some class.
I enjoy this show, but was really disappointed in Billy Rae. He was really milking the"good-ole-boy" stuff pretty good. He didn't seem to clean up all that well either. I agree Leeza looks stiff, maybe she'll loosen up a bit, I hope so since her partner, Tony, is one of the best all star dancers in America and we need to see more of him. None of us could do what they did in four weeks, and its going to get harder as they go. They'll all improve, but it is clear Joey is used to dancing for a lot of folks! Clear winner in the "at-ease" department. have fun with it folks, or just don't watch. Its a choice!
I love watching DWTS - it is normally pure enjoyment and entertainment for me - as Linda said, 2 hours of smiling. My son is a dancer and we really get more excited over the real dancers than the alleged "C-list" celebs. I think it works with these celebs as long as there is some name recognition - these people work hard to train and learn these dances, and the show brings focus on professional dancing, which is good in my opinion. HOWEVER, I am very disappointed about the hype given Heather Mills. While I think it is great if she can be an inspiration to a child, enough is enough. I am not sure she would be a so-called "celebrity" were it not for her marriage to a well-known celebrity. I am insulted that the show is making such a big deal out of her and her leg. Watch for Ian, Apolo, Joey, and Laila to go the distance. They seem to have the ability, the desire to train and win, and the "it" factor. Thanks to ABC for bringing dancing into our homes in a very entertaining manner.
I have not missed an episode EVER! The show is just plain, simple fun and makes me smile every time I watch. Also, as I'm not a cynic by nature I truly believe that Mills is not on as a gimic, but to give hope to people with disabilities. Imagine the person who just lost a limb in an accident: they might be depressed and think they'll never be able to do the things they could before; then they see DWTS and think, "In time, I can do that too". What inspiration!!
Wow,to tough on Billy Ray!Every show has a gag, that's why we watch them!I think a surprise is coming!
This show is about entertaintment and having fun. I can watch the show with my kids!!! I loved the show and I am kind of routing for Ian, because he was the first guy I had a huge crush on. Yea, yea we were going to get married I liked Joey and Laila. I enjoy watching Billie Rae although I don't want him to win. However, my daughter voted for him because he is Hannah Montana's dad
I hope it won't be necessary any longer to show Heather Mills' artificial leg 4 to 5 times during the show. We are all aware she has one as she decided to make it very public especially now during the time of her messy divorce. I also think it is unfair that the public has a vote. They are not seasoned dancers like the judges. Heather might get more sympathy votes than superb dancing votes. So unfair for the rest of the contestants!!! PUBLIC VOTES SHOULD BE ELIMINATED!
I am so glad to hear so many Americans telling the Canadian Shelia that she was out of line for her "Anti-American" statement. Her comment had nothing to do with this blog and was just mean. As for DWTS, we love it. It is a group of people having fun and we need that sort of release. Good job.
I love this show. How nice to see dancing with two people actually HOLDING each other and moving sensually on the floor. That is much better than the gyrations and flopping around of the hip hop scene. But I will enjoy dancing whatever way it comes at me. You've gotta give Heather high praise for taking the challenge. More challenging is Billy Ray trying to move at all. But how fluid was the boxer Laila. She floated like a butterfly. Ian and Joey were great, but I don't think Joey did much cha-cha-ing. But he sure can move! Clyde has potential. Leeza should chuck it all and go home - so stiff - and the dress fit like a disease! I was not as impressed with Pauline P as others were. She is gawky. But I could watch thepros dance all night! It's a fun show, a no-brainer.
Please!! I have watched all of the DWTS shows so far, but I may stop after what I saw last night. Couldn't they get any better 'stars' than this? Billy Ray? Were those some of his "Achy, Breaky" moves incorporated into that dance? Ian Ziering is just creepy. John Ratzenberger? Who are these people? And what will they do with Heather? If she gets voted off, everyone will complain that it was discrimination because of her disability. If they keep her on, it will not be fair to any of the others. All the applause and cheers she gets is only because she is dancing with a disability. Should that get her higher scores than she deserves? Will the judges actually be as hard on her as they are on the others? She is amazingly good at dancing, and she deserves props for giving it a shot. But lets be fair, why is she competing against athletes and celebrities? Is she merely a celebrity because of her marriage to Paul McCartney? Was she a famous and well-known celebrity before they met? Unfortunately, due to her artificial limb, its an unfair competition to her and to the other dancers. So, what is the point?
Maybe, it was just me but I could have swore that there was a costume malfunction on one of the ladies that danced? Anyone notice it too?
I have to agree with everyone who said that Heather Mills is just exploiting herself with her artifical leg and there was no need to show the legs lying on the floor or her putting one on. Unfortuately, she is what she is - just a gold digger and nothing more. Other than that I truly enjoy watching DWTS and unlike one of your other commenters I think this is the best crop of contests that I have seen so far. My two favourites are Joey Fatone and John.
Am I the only one who thinks Heather Mills is only on the show to improve her image and get a better divorce settlement?
The cro-magnon pussitude of the Zeiring will get you every time. When he dances, the green apples sing. I watched DWTS twice in one night and never cried, too. Damn, it's good.
I loved Leeza and Tony. Shandy should go for sure
i take ballroom and can't believe how bad these people are after 2 weeks of intense practice. billy ray gave country music a black eye. he should be asshamed. shandi is shandi have you every heard what come out of her nouth on lingo on gsn. she's not the brightest light bulb in the box.
I really enjoyed the show even though I didn't like some of the songs they picked. I think my favorite to wim is Laila Ali.
I cannot understand why the judges criticize a performer because they did not do the proper dance. The contestants are not the choreographers, so why not put the blame where it should be. Billy Ray Cyrus did not choreograph his cha cha, so why was he penalized for not doing the proper cha cha. The judges have done the same thing in other years. Sometimes they really chastize the celebrity terribly for something that does not appear to be his or her doing.
I agree with all of the emails concerning DWTS.However, does anyone out there think that the stars are not matched very well with the Pros. How can a girl 5'4" dance the Pasa Noble with a 6'7" partner? One of the girls is also taller than her Pro. It looks to me like a mixed up match up.
DWTS is something that my friends & I look forward to every season. The only thing that I would change is NOT to give the audience so much power....it should be the improvement in dancing....not popularity. Good dancers have been voted off & celebs with 2 left feet stayed on. Do like the Skating with the Celebrities..only give the audience 25%. Next you should do a dancing with seniors...we can still move too and it would be fun to do and to watch.
I'm a DWiTS-er since se.2. I view shows when I know something good is on; as in, entertaining. May I volunteer a thought - Master P or Billy Ray Cyrus? Which was more entertaining?! I haven't laughed so hard at ANYTHING on the tube since... I don't know when. Er... sorry, maybe Tucker Carlson's try. Someone's gotta go first, so let's thank them for being a good sport (and ABC for bringing them back for a 2nd week this time!). And, as for the Mills and Shandi chicks: ignore them and they'll go away.... BTW, my votes went to Ian, John, and Billy Ray, but I'll betcha that Laila'll win in the end....
Shandi was not being funny when she suggested that she was happy not to be dancing with a Russian dancer! Please, I don't agree with my fellow Canadian's comment that Americans are ignorant but don't cover up her obvious ignorance which has nothing to do with nationality..... And that comment about American Ignorance was not a Canadian comment, just a comment from a person who lives in Canada....
Heather Mills really needs to go home. America is not buying her revisionist history of her life. She is what she is - a golddigger. Exploiting her disability. "Poor me. I cannot crawl to the loo at night or board private jets' but I can Dance! Oh, please...
My husband and I really enjoy watching DWTS. It's great entertainment and makes us smile and laugh. Our favorites of the night were Joey and John -- they seemed like they were really having fun! Although I agree with Sheila Louise that Shandi's comment about not having a Russian partner was out of line, I chalked it up to simple ignorance and figure Shandi's not long for this show, anyway. I am far more offended by Sheila L's statement that "It shows us Canadian fans how truly ignorant some Americans can be and how they can not hold their tongues." Sheila - lighten up on the American bashing, please! Ignorant people live in every country and Canada has its share, too. I've not noticed Canadians minding when "ignorant Americans" choose to spend their American dollars in Canada.
To Beverly from Sarasota, TOUCHE ! I, too was surprised the judges focused their tongue lashing at Billy Ray for not dancing the cha-cha. Do you remember Mario Lopez also received the same, more than once, last season? Common Denominator: Karina Smirnoff. I don't think she quite grasps the idea of the show. She certainly does love the spotlight and herself. Unfortunately, her reaction when she and Mario didn't win last season left a bad taste in my mouth. But, she is the 'entertainment card'. LOVE this show, the Male host, the music,(I'm in awe of ballroom dancing to modern music after decades of ballroom on PBS), the fun, the costumes, Cheryl Burke; DWTS, rock on!

I thoroughly enjoy watching the program and keep-up each week and call in my vote. But for the life of me I can't understand why the music that is chosen does not fit the dance! I'm a Latina and love to dance, I have won a contest or two with my husband. Can you give me the rationale?
Could I receive and answer to my question as to why the music that is chosen not fit the dance, Please?
Tillie: The answer is unlikely to satisfy you. It's a reality show, not a formal dance competition. They pick songs that the audience will likely be familiar with for ratings sake. Read our Ask the Experts column for more on this issue. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11115306#songs Show staffers pick songs that they can get the rights to and which have rhythms that the staffers think fit the style of dance closely enough.
