Sanjaya's still standing on 'American Idol'

Some suggestions for next week's song choice for Sanjaya Malakar. How about Elton John's "I'm Still Standing"? The lyrics include: "And did you think this fool could never win? Well look at me, I'm coming back again!"

Or maybe he could perform Helen Reddy's "You and Me Against the World." Or Bonnie Raitt's "Let's Give Them Something To Talk About." Or Kenny Rogers' hit "She Believes In Me," which he could dedicate to Ashley, the sweet little kid who was driven to tears by Sanjaya's performance this week.

Whatever he sings, you couldn't blame the teenager if he picked a song whose lyrics fired back in some way at his many detractors. It's true, he's just not in the same league as the many older and more experienced Idol wannabes when it comes to vocal quality, range, and performance style. But he's just 17, and not only has he had to hear about how terrible he is, he's had to hear remarks about his looks, insinuations about his personal life, and weirdly racist comments about his background.

Simon Cowell keeps saying that "American Idol" is a singing competion. But as readers of this blog keep pointing out, that may be the plan, but it's not exactly how it works out. Once the home audience gets to decide, the show becomes a blend of singing competition, popularity contest and social experiment. When people like Howard Stern are jumping on the Vote for the Worst bandwagon, directing the power of his massive audience, you know that singing talent is no longer the first thing being considered. Anyone remember when Hank the Angry Drunken Dwarf, a Stern regular, almost won the People.com online most beautiful person poll? The Internet makes it easy for people to unite and manipulate almost any voting campaign out there, and if you can't deal with that, you'd best not trust your poll/contest/TV show to the masses.

Last week's boot of Brandon Rogers was not as disturbing as this week's ouster of Stephanie Edwards. Edwards had a lovely voice and real charm, and was cited often and early by judge Simon Cowell as a contender to win it all. If singing skill were the only criterion, she would still be on the show.

Many of our readers would like to see the judges step back in, especially in the show's later rounds, and get the final word on who wins. But Fox likes to brag about how the decision is up to the fans, so the network is unlikely to make the change unless something really drastic happens -- say, Sanjaya goes all the way, defeating even Melinda Doolittle and LaKisha Jones. That would definitely make the show reconsider its voting system.

But for now, maybe Sanjaya should show up next week and sing Deniece Williams' 1984 hit, "Let's Hear It For the Boy."

Everyone keeps saying this is a "singing competition". I completely disagree. It is American IDOL, in which the ability to sing well is certainly a plus, but it is more about charisma, charm, showmanship, etc.. Just turn back the clock and look at Shaun Cassidy, Leif Garrett, or Boy George - not the best singers in the world, but they sure were "idolized" by millions.
For those who make fun of the VFTW website and their impact, please take a look at their site and read the info on the behind the scenes going-ons at AI. They DO NOT PICK THE BEST VOCALISTS! (Period. Exclamation!) VFTW just highlights the hypocrisy of those folks who claim that the show is a "singing competition". Remeber VFTW threw their support behind Taylor Hicks last year after Pickler got bounced (yes, Taylor is terrible you Soul Patrol twits), and they, along with Howard Stern, will just switch loyalties to the next worst singer if Sanjaya gets the boot. American Idol producers love this! Why? You annoyed, angered, disgusted, and altogether huffy sorts are prompted to post, call in, and voice your opinions aloud - thereby creating more buzz for the show and more water cooler chat. Simon gets every contestant he wants signed to Sony, so he's making $ off of Daughtry anyways, just not as much as he might have had his album started as #1 instead of working up to #1. Vote Sanjaya off and Chris Whatshisname (who also is terrible singing) will be the choice, so keep Sanjaya instead and keep him in your good graces as his takes over the world!
You all are missing the real point--the voting process. If every single viewer in the nation thinks without a doubt that you are the 2nd best singer in the competition, and votes that way, you are going home because you'll have less first place votes than anyone else. That is why the vote should be for who you want to go home, not who your favorite is.
Why can't we just vote for who we'd like to see go HOME each week instead of having to vote for who we like? It's a bit negative, but I guarantee Sanjaya would be home this week...
That vote for the loser site can be thanked for this, especially after Kevin and Bean interviewed the creator. All KROQ fans love this kind of thing, and the creator says his site hits skyrocketed since the broadcast earlier this week. There's no stopping it now.
The Judges never should have let Sanjaya through to the final 24. he's not that good and his smile scares me. the girls are going crazy over him and his hair. i'm starting to wonder if the voting process if rigged so he can stay in the contest. something is very fishy to me. also parents should deny the girls the phones and/or the parents should do the voting. this is like the other season when "Red" was on there he couldn't sing but the little grandma's were voting him thru. Sanjaya knows he shouldn't be there. you can see it in his face everytime Ryan says he is safe for another week. he should be man enough to step down and let them bring back brandon or Stephanie. this kid has got to go...........
Worry not folks, Sanjaya will be gone soon. I would estimate that 15- 20% of the vote is intentionally voting for the weakest singer, Sanjaya. Since there are many talented singers to choose from, the remaining 80-85% of the vote is spread out between the others. Sanjaya will not lose because of this for a couple of more weeks. Once the field has been whittled down, the spread of the 80% will overcome the 20% of the Sanjaya vote. I estimate he will be around until the final 6 and there is really nothing that can be done to stop it. I think the same thing happened with Scott S. from a few seasons ago.
I can't believe that Sanjaya is still on the show the only reason he can stay in the runnings must be because people are feeling sorry for him . There are people that have been kicked off and should be still there . When you have Sanjaya that has no reason to even be on this show . This season Has let me down .
I have performed "You Really Got Me" several times in several bands, tho I tended to put Van Halen's slant on it rather than to embrace the Kinks' original version. After seeing Sanjaya's reckless butchering of it the other night, I wouldn't have been at all surprised if CNN had reported that Ray Davies had had a heart attack on Wednesday night. Voting for your favorite seems so obvious, but I really think the voting system should be changed so that you call in to vote for the ONE person you want to see sent home, not the one you want to see succeed. I think results would come out a little different.
I, like Brad M, Philadelphia, PA, also have dvr and record so i can get thru the performances and thank go for that. the sanjaya kid is so lucky. i can not believe what i am seeing and i think regardless of who sings first or last, if you are like me, i write down the ones i like for beginning to end and vote when i can. stephanie would have went anyway i think but there is definitely something wrong with the rest of the people watching this show. who in the hell is voting for that kid? the whole state of hawaii? he should have been gone a hell of a long time ago and think if he stays next week, i can not bare to watch him take out another excellent performer, but i thought the exact same thing about that kelly pickler and she finally left but now i have to listen to that annoying voice when i watch nascar. this show needs to end.
Okay, Howard Stern, you've made your point! Now get your listeners to vote for anyone other than Sanjaya!! You should be held liable for ruining the careers of truly better singers!!
I wonder how Sanjaya feels - still on the show & no talent. It must be humiliating knowing you're only there becouse of the non-Idol fans who vote for him to "dis" the show. You'd think he would bow out gracefully before embarrassing himself any longer.

Deal with it America... Sanjaya is there another week, so most of you you whine and complain... You may hate em... but he is there..and made it through because he can sing... Just not the tough hard rock type of guy... so get over it!! As much as the media bash him... they love it that his there... They get somebody to pick on...something to make headlines and dish about. We know he won't win... but give the guy a break.. he's not the only 17yr old on there...and what about the "don't quit" spirit that "America" try to instill in the kids???? Now when someone don't.... there's a problem.
Young females are notorious for watching this type of program. The majority of young males would be watching a sports program. I blame it on the parents who allow a young adolescent to have a cell phone which is not really needed at that age.
Each week it has become apparent that Sanjaya is ready to step up and be prepard to leave. Unfortunately, making a point can only go so far. He knows as does everyone watching that he should not even be around. It is becoming pathetic. The saddest part is that people will have to endure listening to him throughout the whole Idol tour. Let's pray he gets a long case of larengitis.
It seems that the only song that Sanjaya could pull off was "Signed,Sealed, Delivered", which is what he sang at his audition. Other than that, he sounds as if he is singing in a high school talent show. Noone, was right, it's a voting competition. If he makes it to the final three, he'll never get a record deal.
Sanjaya knows that he can not sing. He also knows that if it was not for that wacked out website of Howard Stern he would have been the first gone.
Sanjaya's voice isn't as bad as people make it out to be. He's just got no stage presence so his performances come out extremely awkward. Stephanie was a Beyonce soundalike, although I think her voice isn't as annoying as Beyonce's. Randy Jackson was on target that she could probably sing up tempo songs, but needed work on ballads. Jordin's my favorite. Melinda's a proso we already know she can sing but does that mean she should win? I always thought American Idol was a talent search for undiscovered talent, not a show where backup singers get their chance to shine.
This is a reality show and since it's television it is a producer's medium, which means that everything is carefully controled and scripted by the producers. I used to think the judges had real control over who got into the top 24 but the producers approve their picks. If they really wanted Sanjaya gone would they have shown the girl crying during his song or given Ryan instruction to have Sanjaya hug her after his song? They want ratings because that brings in $$$. I applaud sites like VoteForTheWorst.com for bringing to light, thanks to interviews of former contestants and those who audtion, that this is a well orchestrated reality show and not a singing competition. Sanjaya is now in the top ten so he's guaranteed to be in the tour and cd after the end of the show. If anyone should be upset with the threat of Sanjaya winning the competition it should be Clive Davis who would have to produce his record. What do the AI producers care? They've got a contract with Clive and AI through 2009!
Come on America, do we really need ANOTHER Michael Jackson. That is who Sanjaya is trying to be like. HELLO!!!!
I'm glad that Sanjaya is making it to the top 10, but don't worry poeple, the AI will not be stupid enough to let him get to the top 3. WHY?... AI is keeping him to make tweenies happy. Do you actually think that his staying is based solely on votes alone? After all, they will be the ones who are most likely to buy tickets to see the show once it gets on the road. So, CHILL already! Ever heard of MARKETING STRATEGY??? Duh!!!
Come on, VFTW has no credibility. Prior picks were Antonella and Sundance who were both voted off the same week. They quickly jumped to Sanjaya after that. The VFTW site is great fun and some of the funniest posters i have ever read, but I just can't give them credit for this. Check out the American idol forums for posts for each contestant. Like it or not sanjaya's got alot of fans and doesn't need Howard or VFTW to stay alive. neither did Taylor. And again Howard, please, do something original. People are paying to hear you now.
To all the fools who hate AI so much -- you vote for the "underdog" because hate the show. Don't you realize how you are hurting that "underdog". It happens every season -- someone who's not very good is kept in the competition. Week after week they see themselves saved while much better singers are ousted and their pained faces say it all. They know they don't belong but some joker organization/person encourages people to vote for them. If you hate the show so much, don't watch it. Leave it to the rest of us and stop hurting the young ones who are learning and trying.
For a kid of 17 to come out and bust out with a Kinks song!!! Good for Sanjaya!! He is 17 and having a great time....do you honestly think that he cares what John Doe in IL thinks or what Jane Doe in MA thinks? Not Really! So I give him a standing ovation....he will eventually sells cd's with training and a haircut. The teeny boppers love him and they sure do buy alot of CD's. All this talk about talent??? The judges put him through so there must of been something they saw in him. If not, it's for the money...the big money this show is making. IT'S A TV PROGRAM PEOPLE..IT'S FOR ENTERTAINMENT! I SAY GO SANJAYA!!!!
This is a bad A-I year with many bad performances by most of the performers. Eventually both Sanjaya and Stephanie will be eliminated - the only thing we're arguing about is when. Lets face it, this is the Lakisha and Melinda show - the rest of them are going home.
I think that they are keeping Sanjaya in to keep the audience tuned in.... Frankly, I am getting bored with Idol.
I miss Chris Daughtry. No one will ever compare to the talent and charisma of that guy. I think I will forever be comparing everyone to last season! Who cares who actually wins American Idol, he is a perfect example. They let the right people get the publicity they need without a binding contract to hinder their own personal styles. Chris Daughtry is by far the best contestant to ever grace that stage.
I agree with the majority Sanjaya needs more training. I think a lot of people are forgetting that American Idol is a television show. How would the people with their mean and hateful comments like it if their child was in Sanjaya's shoes? Those making comments about his looks need to look in the mirror. I like him and he is having the time of his life. Enjoy yourself Sanjaya for as long as it lasts.
I guess I'm in the minority here, but I like Sanjaya. He comes across as a sweet kid, and has a stage presence that's different than the others. And,no, I'm not a teenage girl. If you think about it, there have been a LOT of performers who weren't the best singers, but were great stars. Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Carol Channing et al. If you were to really judge them on JUST their singing, the marks wouldn't be that high. But, they had strong personalities and that something extra. I'm not saying Sanjaya is in their league, but he's obviously got a following. So, give the kid a break. At least he's putting himself out there to follow his dream.. and I'm not sure any of us can say that about ourselves!
I must admit I have also become a fan. I never watched before but the auditions were hilarious and I watch every week to see Melinda and Jordan perform because they give me peoplebumps. Jordan should stay away from disney/kiddie songs but when she sang the word "pane" the chills. Blake's performances stands out because he is truly a producing and creative artist. I really hope that people vote for Melinda and Jordan because they really are the singing and performing talents. They can deliver the song and melodies. Not to mention that they are the whole package and Jordon wears the funky clothes and lover her shoes. Lakisha is fading out, she doesn't look happy and those dresses, please cover up your clevage. It's just not pretty.Even though people hate Simon, he is usually right. He and Randy ("pitchy dawg") are true talent scouts but Simon just has his Brit sarcaism. Paula is a monkey with symbals on her hands (watch her clap and see her expression) or maybe a parrot because she just repeats Randy, well lately she has improved but she's still looks like a monkey in drag. Stop the maddess, don't vote for the fluff.
Why are people so incensed that Sanjaya is still in it? He's not the first less talented singer to make it this far. Remember Nikki in season 1? She made it to the top 3, and she couldn't carry a tune in a bucket. In every group performance, you could hear her off-key warbling hanging over the other contestants' voices like a cloud. But she stuck around because she was cute. At least Sanjaya can sing on key and doesn't flub his lyrics, even if his voice isn't the most powerful. And just because Sanjaya and Jordin are the same age doesn't mean they've spent the equal amounts of time performing - experience is a big factor, especially when you have to perform for a large live audience and millions of viewers.
Sanjaya will be the next American Idol, the Howard Stern army will see that it is so! We kept him in last night! Woohoo! RUIN AI! so great...love it
I never liked sanjaya singing or his shy weird mannerism so far except this week. I thought he was brave. He throw away his shyness and brought the house down. I still think he lacks confidence. He can sing well. It is about the voice. Some teens like his voice and his personality for some reason. I really think Judges are overly critical of Sanjaya. Judges are correct in that his past performances are meek and horrible. I hope he sings with confidence and he will be in top 5. Haters will be haters. Can't blame them. I think there is a potential and growth in this kid than anyone in this season. Jordin is also looks promising. If judges made one mistake , it would be not picking hooters girl shyamala malakar. Watch his performance of "Sweet chariot" video in rickey website.
Hey LR - it's not like their keeping him there against his will...if he was so miserable he has the option to leave. Why would he hate it? The whole world is talking about him...and he will be a HERO to many of us if/when he wins and RUINS the show. I cannot wait. You people that think these people are REAL talents have no taste whatsoever.
I think most people are missing the underlying issue here. It doesn't matter what Sanjaya does. From the first show with the top 24 it was obvious to me that the winner was already crowned. Randy and Simon didn't pull any punches there. Why aren't there any rockers (ok, Gina maybe) or country singers? Like it or not, that's what America likes. Why did the talent get so diluted in one year? How about this as a suggestion, Let Simon stay (as long as he stays consistent, either this is a singing competition or not; you can't say that and then comment on what people look like or what they wear), throw in a current singer who is working at it for a living, and add an average Joe/Jane from some type of lottery system. After all, wouldn't it be nice to get the voice of the people who might or might not buy this stuff (and I'm betting none of these people will sell).
Everyone knows that Sanjaya boy cannot sing! He has no talent! He's off key and he shouldn't have been there in the first place. They are getting rid of all the real singers and that's sad! I don't like the show anyway! It sucks! It's no good anymore. After Fantasia, that was it. She shut it down with her singing and a voice for stardom. No one could touch her after that idol show from last year. I think money was paid by that damn Sanjaya's people to the Idol show owners to keep him on the show. Money talks because they know damn well that boy can't sing and have no talent with his sensitvie a--! After this show, they should be cancelled and taken off. No one likes this boring sh-- anymore. The judges to me seem like they know why this boy is still here because they probably were instructed by their employee to say good things about him and pass him on and do what they are told to do.....LIE! AMERICAN IDOL IS THE PITS!
Beth, Englewood NJ - "At least Sanjaya can sing on key"? Please! Did you even hear him last night? He was all over the place EXCEPT on key. Sure, he's a little cute, but I see no stage presence or personality that others are talking about."strong personality and that something extra"? no way. Watch his face on all the results shows and you know he's totally shocked that he's still there. He KNOWS that he doesn't belong there and that he's out-gunned and a teenager who's out of his league. Maybe he was put in the top 24 to boost ratings, but his singing hasn't improved, it's gotten worse since his auditions. He knows and he'll be gone soon.
I have to go with what L R Clarion,IL had to say. I wonder what his parents think? Sanjaya needs to bow out. I would think he would be embarrassed to even stay on the show, knowing how people think.
Sanjaya is GREAT,no doubt about it,i have read some of the above comments and felt pretty bad for that kid,he was chosen by the judges because he can sing well, actually very well and even better than his sister,so if you guys want him off the show because of Racist issue or immaturity, then i have nothing to say....but yeah i agree that there are great singers far more experienced, but he is good and he can be better than anyone else on the show and dont forget he has an unique voice, thats why he is still on the show, now this is for all the haters of sanjaya-Lets see who wins!(well everyone will hate me after this too but i dont care!)
This message is for Stevie B. Cliffdate who complained about the poor spelling of the comment posters here. Umm ... hey Stevie? You incorrectly used the word "Your" instead of "You're", to begin your complaint! Check your own spelling and grammar before judging the spelling of others! I hope you're turning a bright shade of red right now, my friend.
Stevie B. of Cliffdate, MO Are you seriously complaining about people having poor spelling? Did you read your own sentence..."That is a much bigger crime then who gets voted off."? Try THAN instead of THEN :) How dumb do you look right now?
1st off I'd like to say that American's as a whole must be tone deaf if they think Sanjaya can sing. How he keep's squeaking by is the 13-16 age bracket that are calling in votes, also the site VOTEFORTHEWORST.com has a hand in this as well. Grow up people and vote for the people with talent not for the one that will get the most laughs.
Only in America can this happen. Sanjaya is a phenomenon created by "Idol" for a specific reason- RATINGS!!
Tracy from Detroit - No thanks, we're all having WAY too much fun ruining this lame-ass show.
If this were a singing competition, they wouldn't let the masses who are asses to vote, and instead let Randy, Paula and Simon decide who gets kicked off each week. But this is American Idol, not a singing competition, and frankly, Sanjaya has tons more charisma than many of the other contenders. GO SANJAYA!
will never buy another FORD (have two now),will quit drinking COKE, this years show is terrible, good singers going home and Sanjaya still around! God help us.
Start a teen idol, for both gals & guys in there own seperate compitiontions, and i say got to give sanjaya credit if he believes in himself, he will succeed.
Team Sanjaya!!! Muah ha ha ha ha haaaaaaa
This is the first season of American Idol I've been following, and honestly, I'm very disapointed. I wouldn't buy a record by any of the contestants. None of them stands out. Gina - an Amy Lee wannabe? no thanks Haley - cute, but forgetable Blake - beat boxing? hated it! I just can't stand this guy Jordin - totally insignificant, her singing is awful Lakisha and Melinda - please, give me a break from these two, they're boring, predictable, not to mention very hard to look at Chris R. - no originality here (Justin Timberlake anyone?) and he sings like a girl Chris S. - the only voice I like, but he needs to loose weight, and the "fro" has to go Phil - the bald head and the eyes? scary Sanjaya - ok, he may not be the best singer, but he's entertaining and different, and that's why he's still in the competition Unfortunately, I think Melinda or Lakisha are going to win, but will they sell records? I doubt it. The truth is that appearance has a lot to do with a singer's long term success. It's not only a good voice, it's stage presence, a strong and entertaining performance, uniqueness, and good looks that appeal to masses, the "whole package". What happened to Ruben? no doubt he has a good voice, but he's overweight and not good looking. On the other hand, take a look at Idol's most successful contestants: Kelly, Clay, Carrie, Chris D... what do they all have in common beside good voices? they're all good looking.
