Early attention isn't everything on 'Idol'

If you walked up to a random person with photos of all the "American Idol" contestants and asked them to put names to faces, I'm betting most couldn't get 100 percent. People who'd seen the show could probably identify Sanjaya -- even pre-Mohawk, and maybe a couple other singers. But if they'd seen the show even once, they could probably recognize Chris Sligh.

Sligh had a distinct look from the start. He didn't look like an "Idol," but neither did Taylor Hicks. Sligh was chubby, with a giant Afro, and glasses. A Hollywood stylist would probably have put him on a diet, cut his hair, and given him Lasik surgery before they'd let him perform on a concert stage.

But Sligh was proud of his look, and played it up. His fans were dubbed the "Fro Patro," mimicking Hicks' "Soul Patrol." He joked that he was "bringing chubby back," a la Justin Timberlake bringing sexy back. And it definitely was appealing to see a singer cheerfully going against the traditional grain, saying "Who says I have to look like a Ken doll? This is who I am."

Every season, fans comment on how the singers who get the most airtime early on go further than those who don't. Sligh piled up the airtime early and often. The "Idol" cameras loved Sligh, with his jokes about making David Hasselhoff cry, and of course, his hair (vote here on whether he should choose a different look). He not only got plenty of airtime, he got plenty of press attention, too. Articles were written about how he attended fundamentalist Bob Jones University but no longer sang only Christian music.

But in the end, his unusual looks and his "Fro Patro" weren't enough to keep Chris Sligh in the contest, even against a woman (Haley) so bland that both Simon and Ryan have had trouble remembering her name. Just one more sign of the unpredictablity of "Idol," a contest that may yet see a teenager named Sanjaya go further than anyone would have ever imagined.

Stay tuned. Something tells us this season has more than a few surprises left before the May 23 finale.

Sanjaya is not the joke. The fact that you all are spending time discussing this Kid is the Joke. LEAVE THE KID ALONE!!! Discuss something more of value and let these Talent Contestants try for the Gold Ring. If he is serious and has a good Agent, He is already on his way simply because he made it into the finals. And Karl Rove??? Is he a Joke? I won't comment on what I think of our Politicians-with-influence doing what he did.
I never really watched the show. Seeing that there is all this controversy, It might be interesting to watch what all the hype is about. That's entertainment.
Count me as NOT a Melinda fan. She may wind up being like Taylor in that sounds/looks good on tv but when it comes to radio, I don't think she will sell well. The 2 idols that have actually "made it" are Kelly & Carrie. They're young, pretty, sing well & can translate on radio & tv to the age group that matters most 18-40. Close your eyes when Melinda sings & it's just boring. She'll probably win but she won't sell well. I want Lakisha to win because I like her story. But, I think Jordin would be the best idol choice if they want someone to do well like Carrie & Kelly.
The absolute best thing about this whole season of AI is that Chris (5:46pm) called my attention to Pat Smith of Boston calling us a salad BOWEL. That is hysterical. The rest of the season sucks. That was the only redeeming factor. Sure, there are some great singers, I happen to be pulling for Jordin but it no longer is a competition, now it's a game show. I feel like we're all being punk'd.
I personally don't understand the big fuss about Melinda. She really bothers me with her pretending not to know that she can sing...for goodness sake she was already a backup singer!! And I agree with the others who have said that all her songs sound the same, which is very boring. She also just seems very OLD to me, like she should be singing at a retirement home. My vote goes to Jordan...she is amazing!
I think it's absolutely ridiculous that Sligh got voted off and Sanjaya wasn't even in the bottom three. Sligh didn't do too well with a couple songs that he sang, but Sanjaya haws never done well. It's disgusting that Sanjaya is even still on the show, it's mind boggling that he even made it past the top 12. We should be able to vote who we want OFF the show, I'm sure then Sanjaya would be gone in a heart beat. I'll miss Sligh.
I don't understand why WE, the voters of the show, don't get to see the statistics! Shouldn't we be the ones to see how close the voting actually is??? I DON'T beleive that Chris got less votes then Sanjaya & Haley...those 2 should of been the 1st to go! I bet Simon, Randy & Paula are kicking their own butts for letting Sanjaya in...bring back Sundance Head!!
Want to fix the "rigged" voting AND do some good in the process? Start charging $0.50 a call for voting. Not only would this raise millions of dollars for charity (which AI is already promoting this season), but it would likely eliminate the endless speed re-dialing that is putting the better singers at risk and promoting the less talented ones.
As a huge Chris fan I'm so glad to still see support for him! If you want to keep hearing him (and a better version of him) check out his band's site: www.halfpastforever.com. They just released an album and are actually quite good.
It just doesn't make any sense who America sends home and who they allow to stay. Sanjaya and Haley should have been long gone before some of the people who have exited recently. I think we need to change the rules to American Idol: Survivor Style. Split the contestants into teams until they get to the final eight and let the team duke it out in a set number of performances solo, duo, trio or however many. Let the judges decide on those performances and rank the performances numerically. Let the losing team go to performer council and let the team decide on two people to leave and let America decide between them as to which one actually leaves. Then when it comes down to the final eight, you merge the teams and everyone sings solo. The judges and the team collaborate on which two to send home and America decided on one person who actually goes home until we get to the American Idol.
Gee, Karen from Phoenix. So sorry that there are overweight people blocking your "view." Not everyone who is overweight just needs to exercise. Pretty shallow comments. Why not pick on the people who write in who can't spell or construct a legible sentence? Don't be prejudiced -- dog everybody who is not as perfect as you obviously think you are!
I have watched American Idol since its existence and I am totally appalled that it has come to this! Quite honestly, I refuse to watch this show as long as Sanjaya is still competing. He's a joke! 17 or not, if America won't vote Sanjaya off, I wish he would have enough decency to resign! If that new ridiculous hairstyle of his (that pony-halk) because a new fad, I think I'm going to get sick.
In view of confused comments, it is a live show but it being done in Cali, by the time us folks on the east coast gets the news, we are three hours behind. Me, being from South Carolina was hopin that chris went a little further, but then oh well... you cant have your cake and eat it too
I feel that accepting experienced professional singers like Melinda is against the AI goal which is to give a break to undiscovered talent. I also do not appreciate the comments made by the judges that influence the voters..ie. Simon: Melinda, are you as nice as you seem? Lakisha, you look like you will in 50 years; Haley, ( re her revealing scotch taped outfit)... people will remember you for more than your singing tonight. I respect Simon's musical critiques but i have no respect for his personal comments which show favortism for more than a contestant's singing ability and stage presence. I am flabbergasted by Karen of Pheonix and her outrageous comments regarding the weight of the contestants...Karen, if you want to view perfect figures , watch America's Top Models; they don't have to sing. ..and if they ate well, they would not be on the show. Talent is showcased on AI, not bodies!!
American Idol...the name does NOT suggest a SINGING only contest...all of the other contestants have the personality of a noodle...The Fact Of the matter is, Sanjaya has all the hallmarks of an IDOL, although he is a little weak in the Vocal Department...and he WILL be YOUR next American Idol!!!! VOTE SANJAYA!!!!!
Hey Cris?? I'm pretty sure Kelly Clarkson kicks Ass! AI promoted her VERY well!! Any ways...still can't get over being called a bowel?? :)
Chris needed to go - his voice wasn't good enough to make it to the end of the competition. His last few song attempts have not been good. Ignoring the pink elephant (Sanjaya) in the room and focusing just on Chris - he did not sing well enough to make it. He's gone, it's over. It's happened before - everyone was up in arms when Constantine left before Scott Savol, ditto Clay Aiken's early demise. Ditto Chris Daughtry last year.
Chris Sligh had yet to provide his fans with a solid performance. Every week he struggled with tempo issues and as the field gets smaller, a glaring issue like that will cost you. Sanjaya aside, the other so-so singers will face similar fates (Sanjaya just needs to go, but we may be stuck with him for a while longer). We all know the plot to this show...in the end, only one remains, and despite the best intentions of the judges and producers, the likelihood of this year's winner becoming a real recording star (a la Kelly or Carrie) is only about 50%. The top 3 finalists this year, most likely, are Melinda, Lakisha and Blake. The only one with any real stage presence (Diva Power) is Lakisha.
Hello people!! It is not the fault of American Idol that Sanjaya is still on the show. It's the fault of people who DO NOT VOTE! I vote every week for my favorite (Go Blake!) so if you have a problem, pick up your phone and dial in a simple number. Otherwise, quit whining, I'm tired of hearing about it!!!! Sanjaya is not going anywhere because his fans VOTE. Oh and I agree about Melinda, I'm tired of her. Very boring. Blake sparks my interest and always comes up with something new and fun!
Did Karen of Phoenix suggest that if a person is overweight they should not be chosen to participate in AI? Sorry honey but not everyone is as perfect as you. Many great performers have been overweight and have made a successful life for themselves and were (are) loved by the American population. I hated to see Chris go but did you hear him sing? He was voted off for poor song choice and racing away from the music not for his appearance of weight. Get a life!
For those who like to criticize others, check out your spelling errors.
I totally agree with Karen,Phoenix. I want to look at hot people if I'm going to waste my time watching TV. You can hit any mall and see fat people! I also belive that it is their job to look good and go the extra mile to keep in shape. You cant help it if your ulgy, but you can still have a smokin body just get off your lazy butt and go for a walk!! Anyone that has ever been to Europe can tell you that people there treat food different than Americans do. FYI fat people of the US, Food is not love. Maybe if you quit stuffing your face long enough you might find some.
I will tell you why Sanjaya is still in the show: He has received so much bashing and public criticism, people (including myself) have begun to feel this is unwarranted and unfair. If they had just left him alone, he would have been long gone. However, when he stepped up his performance a bit in the face of all of this criticism, I was moved to call in and vote for him and I have never voted before on AI. And here's a big shocker: I am not a teenage girl; I'm a mother of a 3 year old in her thirties! He's not that bad and for someone as young as he is, he certainly has a lot of guts to get up there week after week when everyone is saying how bad he is and should have gone home by now.
Karen from AZ: That's right, because all women need to be size 3's. *rolling my eyes here* Wake up...people come in lots of different sizes. Also it isn't the job of the American Idol contestants to "look good and sound good". Guess what...they're Joe Schmo's off the street, not professionals. They don't have a Hollywood liposuction guy to "make them perfect." And as for being a bad example, I'd much rather have a strong female role model that has the guts to get up and do something like AI or show some humility like Melinda for my daughters to look up to over, say, perfectly sculpted Paris Hilton or Britney Spears.
well now, we have had three girl idols and two male, so it's time for the third male to win idol-so America's choice this sixth season will be between Blake and Sanjaya- now, i will say this: if Sanjaya wins, my co-workers, my family, friends, neighbors, will definitely stop watching idol.
I heard that Melinda was a back-up singer for Christina Aguilera. If so,she's not an amateur and should be taken OFF the show. I also agree that her "gosh, do you really think I'm that good" act is getting really old.
Cris, I am glad that you also noticed Pat's comment. I am laughing so hard at America's salad bowel that nothing else on this board has had any impact on me.
I would like to see Haley (with her short skirts) and Sanjaya be the final two. I predict that Haley will edge out Sanjaya because of her looks. This has been the most exciting season of all.
it's funny hearing you people say your not going to watch AI as long as Sanjaya's on. i honestly think more people are watching because of Sanjaya! whatever he may have, he is certainly drawing the crowds.
Pat Smith..what the heck are you talking about? It doesn't matter if Sanjaya is doing his best, therefor he should stay. He is TERRIBLE. It's not about being a nice person, or how you look. It's about if you can sing better than everyone else. Anyone that can hear knows that is not the case here. Sanjaya is still there for only two reasons. The vote for the worst website and the fact that people are voting for his skin color rather than talent level.
Mark my words, Sanjaya will make it to the final 5--Haley, Phil and Chris R. will all go before him because this insane juggernaut to keep him around just keeps gathering momentum--those voting for him actually want him to win the thing, if only to make a complete and total farse of the entire AI production. Only when Lakisha, Melinda, Jordan and Blake are left with him (and just maybe Gina) will he finally (I sincerely hope) be gone.
If William Hung had a girlfriend, she might look like Sanjaya.... seriously, I liked Chris Sligh a lot and was sorry to see him go. But I think what happens is that when a contestant starts strong and then has an "off" week, you're disappointed. Sanjaya, on the other hand, is SO hideous that you have no expectations at all. I mean, he was slightly better than awful on British Invasion week and everyone RAVED. It's all about expectations. Melinda could meet a similar fate to Chris. She's fantastic, but is getting too safe and predictable. She has the best voice, by far, but I really believe Jordin and Blake are the most marketable. And Lakisha? Cool voice, but zero stage presence. (Her cover of "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" should have been called "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Sleeping.") She looks tired, bored or scared every week. Somebody get her some Prozac! Ot at least some coffee! And Haley--watch for her calendar. She's a hottie and she'll be famous one way or another.
I am annoyed with melinda doolittle also. I love how she sings, but the "shocked" look when she gets compliments are just too much. She is a professional singer, she knows she is good. I just have to leave the room when the judges talk to her because of her looking suprised when she is told how good she is. Sanjaya should have been gone weeks ago. There have been too many good contestants sent home and he is still there. This is not good for his self esteem. He honestly has to watch every week and know that his singing is horrible.

I thought Phil's "Every little thing she does is magic" was pretty darn good. He sounded great. I think we perceive a little bit of insecurity in Phil(about his looks not his voice) and we see that as weakness and we tend not to vote for him based on that. (he does have incredible eyes, but it's the "SO white, bald head, and the ears stick out -the hats help)It would be nice to see him forget that and become confident. If this was " A SINGING COMPETITION" like everyone keeps trying to remind everyone of, it wouldnt be on TV, it would just be radio. Singing is the MOST important, but looks DEFINITELY matter. They play a part in the year long (money making)Idol tour, future live performances, commercials, music videos, etc.etc. OF COURSE it matters!(dont be naive) Now, on "looks", its not that you have to look like a beauty pageant contestant (although Haley does) or be a Ken doll, but when I say "looks", its not so much beauty as it is "coolness". You have to look "cool" and confident. (consider Taylor, certainly not a hunk, but had his cool bluesy thing going for him and moreover he was CONFIDENT!) LaKisha has a big and proud black woman thing going for her, but she needs to connect with the audience more personally though after the song, show more personality. Dolittle does seem to be fake though with the Golly Gee, little ol' me thing, its old now, she needs to show confidence now a be a star- the flips on her hair helped last week. Blake is totally hip, again not a Ken doll, but totally cool and hip,and a rare, true musician, I hope he wins. The other guy, the timberlake-like guy, he is hip and very cute for the young girls. Jordin is very cute, great voice, and love the personality. (the 3 ALL matter! (Total package!)) Gina is mediocre, but throws some variety in I guess. Haley, its obvious, Simon nailed it, tons of girls can do what she does, look great and sing descently, but no power house voice, she's no where near the talent of McPhee from last season, but in the same genre. McPhee edges out over her in looks I'd say as well.
as if I didnt say enough before, yeah Chris Sligh sucked last week, likeable clever personality, but not good enough. and Sanjaya, cute kid, couldnt even here his singing last week, too distracted by the ridiculous hair, he can sing if he focuses on it, maybe take it seriously and get a good coach, he needs to play up his young charm and his hair is gorgeous when left naturally. He'll get further and possibly get a contract later, he'd have an audience of young girls.
I love how everyone here acts like the show OWES them something. If you don't like it . . . don't watch. If you don't like how the votes turn out . . . vote more! It's a simple as that. Like it or not, Chris Sligh not only deserved to go home (he butchered the song) he actually WANTED to go home. So why is it Sanjaya's fault? I have to admit I'm actually starting to gain respect for Sanjaya--not as a singer, but as a gutsy kid. It's quite clear even HE knows he shouldn't be here, but what can he do? He does his best, I'm sure, but the rest is up to us, the voters. Last week's hairdo was just an indication that he is fully aware that at this point, it's out of EVERYBODY'S hands, even Sanjaya's and the judges. (I think it was a subtle snub, too, that he really doesn't care what Simon ad the rest say about him, he'll do what he wants.) I'm actually interested now to see what he'll do now.
I've written the FOX network now I will make my commets here.I have watched American Idol for over three years. I hold the judges responsible to allowing Sanjaya to get as far as he has. This is a singing competition not a fan club for Sanjaya. I will stop watching the show if he remains. American Idol has become a JOKE!
Chris wanted to leave. He sang great and was on tempo every other week and was a music major in college. Do you think all of a sudden he forgot how to sing on tempo? If you noticed he did not look upset at all when he got voted off.
I don't understand this craziness with this Sanjaya thing? Everyone knows that he is not one of the best singers! (Matter of fact-he really can't sing at all!!!) It is really pitiful what this show has reduced itself to. I really believed that this was an opportunity of a lifetime for people that truly deserved it. I tried voting for Chris last year, and found it "odd" that we couldn't get in to his box-now I am hearing that this is happening with the other singers on the show-anymore I am wondering how "fixed" this show is. I will do the same as others,(I have been a fan of this show for years)I will give it one more week on the Sanjaya thing, if IT doesn't go away-THEN------I WILL!!!!!!
I think Pat meant "salad bowl" rather than "bowel." Also, "competition" rather than "compitition."
Despite India being the second largest population in the world, India cannot vote for AMERICAN idol... Duh....
No matter what Blake sings or wears--he has sex appeal, talent, and and is a nice guy. What an AI representative he'd make for America.Vote for the man.Arline MI.
I think it is a shame that so many folks are making fun of Sanjaya . He is only a kid trying to get ahead in the entermaint business. maybe he cant sing but he is a good entertainerHow would you like it if every one made fun of you for trying to get ahead in somthing you wanted to do. I give him my vote for not not giving up because some people dont like him. Give him a chance, at least he is not on the streets doing drugs or stealing. I like him. Helen M
Get a clue people! It is a reality TV show and Sanjaya is actually good for ratings. I vote for Sanjaya everyweek becasue I have heard him sing in real life and the boy can sing. I also vote for Blake, Jordin and Gina. If you don't want Sanjaya there, then don't vote for him. Pick someone else and vote like crazy for them. This is a popularity contest, not a singning contest. Never has been. Thousands of really great singers never even get to audtion in front of Simon, Paula and Randy.
Hello there! Living in Germany, somtimes, I miss out on some of the most entertaining shows on the American TV. Each time I Go back to America I just love to watch the Idol contest It is entertaining and soulful. Any one who can stand such criticism has to be special. Mylinda is my pick for American Idol. Marie Davenport-mmmarie99@hotmail.com
Go Donna! Finally, someone agrees with my sentiments. For the last few weeks I have been gnashing my teeth everytime I hear the praises being showered on Melinda. Of COURSE she's going to sound good, she's a PROFESSIONAL! Go away, Melinda, and give the others, who are TRYING to show their singing talents, a chance. You've been there, done that. As for Sanjaya, no comment. He's had enough publicity.
This Sanjaya thing is ruining the show. It has become too obvious and known that the show is having interference by other media people, whom I will not name. It started out as a journey for unknown, everyday people chasing their passion and dreams. It has become a joke and the fun is gone. It even hurts the credibility of the really good singers seriously trying to get their break. Fox, you can do better!
He is not as good as he thinks he is.
I love, love, love Gina. Go girl!! My vote is for LaKisha. That girl can sing; I wish she'd mix it up a bit more though. She needs to win. Jordin rocks. I'll miss Sligh. He'll have a future. I'm bored with Melinda. 'Nuf already. Voting Sabrina off was a travesty. Blake, Phil and Richardson are entertaining. I think they'll all do well in the industry even if they don't win AI.
