Sanjaya and that Indian call-center rumor

April 5 Update: The Associated Press has written a story on the Indian call-center rumor, agreeing that it's a ridiculous conspiracy theory.

Americans love a good conspiracy theory, apparently. And in the case of Sanjaya Malakar on "American Idol," there are as many conspiracy theories as there are viewers. Some blame teenyboppers who are in love with Sanjaya's flowing locks, some blame Vote for the Worst and Howard Stern, some blame the fact that Sanjaya once lived in Hawaii (which gets its own time slot for voting).

Some, of course, cite the fact that Sanjaya is half Indian-American (no one mentions the fact that he's also half Italian-American). And that theory has spawned a related theory: That citizens of India working in call centers for American companies there are flooding the phone lines while they're at work with votes for Sanjaya, out of some kind of national pride.

Sheldon Liber of AOL's Blogging Stocks was one of the early proponents of the "it's all the fault of Indian call centers" theory. On March 9, he wrote "Now I have no idea if this theory has any relevance, or if I'm the only one in the country who agrees with the judges that this kid should have been long gone, but I do know that large numbers of viewers are voting to keep him on the show and the call centers in India have the ability to make cheap calls to the United States like no other constituency."

As you can see from the comments that follow his post, many people criticized him and called his theory racist. Many pointed out that India has its own version of "Idol," and that Indian citizens are more interested in the World Cricket Cup than in an American version of a talent show. Said one commentor: "[If you knew] the call centre employee demographic in India, [you would know that] they are not the one that watch these shows."

But the comments that made the most sense to me were those that wisely pointed out it's unlikely an employer would stand for this kind of repeat calling on company time, and that it would not go unnoticed.

One person posted: "[It's] very clear that no one here has an idea of how a call center works. Most of the so called Indian call centers are US corporations with a call center based in India. Every outgoing call is not only logged but also monitored as even if it's cheap it still costs to make an overseas call and the corporations everywhere want to save money every possible way."

And another echoed those sentiments saying "Seriously, if you operate a call center and hundreds of calls go to a 1-800 number every week, what would you do? It's a matter of paying for bandwidth, worker productivity etc."

"American Idol" doesn't really address this issue in the show's FAQ, although they do address power-dialing machinery, saying, vaguely, "Production will have in place weekly monitoring procedures designed to prevent individuals from unfairly influencing the outcome of the voting by generating significant blocks of votes using technical enhancements. The producers reserve the right to remove any identified 'power dialing' votes."

Liber later backed down a bit on his call-center theory. He later posted "it has become clear to me that numerous factors are in play and the theory is a stretch for plausibility" and "upon further thought I believe that this is far fetched."

But unless Fox comes out and makes some kind of statement (unlikely, because what would they say?), this rumor will likely be around as long as Sanjaya remains on the show.

Why doesn't American Idol do what Dancing With The Stars does and limit the amount of votes from a phone line or e-mail?
Everyone has forgotten that these people want to make a living in the music business and this is their shot at making it. So vote for the best not because he/she is cute, has hair etc but because they deserve a spotlight. I still love the entertainment factor and will keep watching in spite of the inappropriate voting. I LIKE SIMON, HE IS REAL AND HE MAKES THAT SHOW FUN TO WATCH. You are always wondering what he is going to say next.
I've never watched American Idol because it is a popularity contest and not one devoted to talent. If it were truly a talent contest there would be no need for Simon, Ryan or the rest of those losers.
If Sanjaya wins, it is because he is idolised by Americans. Remember the name of the show. It does not matter whether he can sing or not. The fact remains that, the contestant with the most appeal wins. Go Sanjaya!
That's what I posted on a week ago, that Sanjaya got the vote from the Indian workers work for the American company....
Who cares!!! How many of the famous singers today can actually sing? Xtina has a 10 times better voice then Britney but Brit was more popular back in the day(not so much anymore). Odds are you could hear better music finding a local group at a dive bar that some of those considered the top talent. The industry killed itself by promoting sex and drama to sell albums, not the music. I've heard great Hip Hop comming out of Pittsburgh yet we have the worst Hip Hop stations ever. I hate the fact if I want to listen to good music I have to dig all over the internet because if I turn on the radio I get to listen to the same regurgitated crap all day long. I'm tired of the fact the talent, wether vocal or even lyrical is dying because the music industry would rather shove the next 16 year old down your troat. Sanjaya should win becuase thats the way it works in the real music industry. And no I am not just a bitter musician. I couldn't sing or dance to save my life. But I can tell the difference between someone with real talent and someone who won the popularity contest. I've never watched a single episode but I can tell you if he can win the popular vote he will be forced down your throat for years to come. Good luck Sanjaya becoming the next star with no talent to waste my radio waves.
He does have entertainment ability, but not a good singing voice. We can't fault HIM for wanting to be the next AI! We cannot know what goes on "behind the scenes," but I keep wondering why they picked him in the first place... but wondering about the past is an idle (or idol) waste of time. I can't put my finger on it, but this year lacks the appeal of all the past ones. I wonder if all the regulations have subdued their personalities. Something is definitely missing this year.
American Idol is really popularity contest rather than singing contest as it is being projected. Ultimately the contestants who impress/influence the viewer just by any possible means like his looks, behavior, demeanor, may be singing talent get the vote that night. So for in my observation, Sanjaya has been using other means to influence the viewer opinion in his favor, which is making him go this far. How long he will last? Till he runs out of tricks and knack to influence the people
THe voting for Sanyjaya is costing the other contestants there shot at stardom. That only comes once in a life time and that is why Sanjaya Should step dowm. But is sister is hot lets see more of her.
Please American, put us and Sanjaya out of our misery. He is terrible and a waste of airtime. People need to remember that this is a "talent" competition and vote for who has talent.
Nah! These American kids are merely brown nosing him for when, after all of the outsourcing is done, their new boss comes from India, after COngress lowers the minimum wage to $2.25 an hour, with nifty paper hats and offers for lucrative jobs in the growing fast food industry.
"Pretty clear he can't sing very well, but are youth are are future. Scary in this regard hugh? " angel d What is scarier yet is that you cannot spell or use punctuation correctly.
Uh.... who cares? We have men and women dying in war, and this is news. You must be friggen kidding me people!
Maybe America would'nt have military forces in more than 130 out of 190 countries in the world; if people were to pay attention to things that matter instead of mind numbing television shows or ESPN. Try something new and THINK about it.
I agree with Kelly Sherwood, AR!! Everyone is saying they will "stop watching" if Sanjaya wins. I have personally been disappointed in past seasons in the finale because the one I liked didn't win, but that is going to happen because everyone has a different opinion and it is no reason to stop watching, especially now that that the proceeds are going toward such a wonderful cause. It is still entertaining no matter who wins and if any of the finalists are talented enough they are a lot more likely to get discovered through this show than if they had not been a part of it. I agree that the show is for entertainment and should not be taken so seriously, but if it is helping with a good cause in the process that is what's the most important, and if even just a few talented singers are able to achieve their dreams thanks to AI that is great too!
Leave Sanjaya alone, everybody seems to be picking on him. So what if his people are voting for him? no big deal. What about Chicken Little? He was terrible and a lot of good singers were voted off before him,and nobody complained about him. Sanjaya will be voted off when its due time.America, stop being so mean,he's just a kid be happy for him.
Charge .95 per call and see how many teeny boppers flood the lines then!
Let this right. Gwen Stefani said about Sanjaya- he picked her tough and difficult song to sing and he did. Vocals not strong but notes not missed. Now Tony Bennett just said some good words about Sanjaya- he is an entertainer- he can sing. Again showmanship Sanjaya showed and again vocals not strong but he danced with Paula while singing - did not miss a note - did not forget his words. So you can still vote for him as the entertainer of the American Idol series - and who knows - American Idol may just give America a new youth entertainer if not an American Idol.
Every year there's controversy about if so and so wins it will be the end of the show. This year it's Sanjaya, and American Idol producers are laughing all the way to the bank. There is no way he's going to be in the finals but I'm sure the producers love the publicity all this is generating.
I'll just say this- he would be ok if he didn't do such outlandish things. He started out like Kevin Covais did (though Kevin Covais had a stronger voice)as a shy kid, like everyone else was better and he knew it. But he didn't give up. Now it's just kinda weird. I wouldn't say he's a terrible singer cuz he's not, but he just goes too far sometimes with the things he does (e.g. Mohawk, You Really Got Me 'The Universe of Sanjaya', ect.)
American Idol is a joke. I've never watched an episode but because of the fat girl going on a hunger strike, racist people claiming that Indians really care about this, and various other idiots, I've set my phone to redial to give Sanjaya my votes. Get over yourselves. This is a dumb show that caters to a dumb audience.
I have watched AI since it began and never has there been a season without controversy. This controversy with Sanjaya remaining is the most harmful and hurtful to the ousted contestants who are serious about a music career while this weak singer remains. I think AI and the judges have to be held accountable and take responsibility for this debacle. After all the judges did pass him through to the Top 24! What were they thinking?! This act in light of all the controversy now is what precipitated all this mess in the first place and is quite insulting to those contestants on AI because of their future. I also disagree with many who say that AI is a popularity contest rather a singing contest. Without AI, where would Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken, Jennifer Hudson, Carrie Underwood, etc. be now? These people and many others who have appeared on this show are truly talented but would not have been able to do music without the help of AI! Finally, I also have to disagree with those who believe that voting rigging is being exposed this season since Sanjaya is still around to tell the tale. If the show had a hand in anything like rigging to eliminate a contestant despite national votes, then I think he would have been gone long before now. I do think the voting system should be changed and the three judges opinions in this round should be included as part of a score for each contestant rather than as only words swaying America's opinions!
I cannot believe the show this year. sanjaya is not only untalented but he is a cocky little flamer. god, what i would give to see him booted off of the show. please people let's vote him off!!!!!!!!!!
Melinda Doolittle is the best!!!!she is the next American Idol...
hey its SHOWBIZ. Show, Business. what's that got to do with talent? and i won't be surprised if we heard that some geek hacked into the phone network or voting software to hike up votes for this boy....though its more likely this sanjaya-phoenomenon is a studied strategy based on market analysis by show producers for the media company management. how will the rich get richer otherwise? anyway america, we all need to lighten up, its a fun ride, isn't it? oh, and simon is the best thing about the show if we're talking about music.
AI has become the BIGGEST JOKE this year. OK Simon quit the damn show. Paula just keep smiling and not tell these kids what they really need to HEAR. Randy you have become a simple simon you choose your words wisely, you know the contestant that really wants to improve. My heart goes out to sanjaya not that this child can sing by no means but what he will face once this charade is over He made need Dr. Phil. I say Good Luck Lakisha and Malinda they are by far the best for this year and if Sanjaya makes it to the final 2 I hope the recording companies are looking at the real singing abilities of these two women.
I assure you that Indians don't give a shit about AI. I'm Indian, living in Singapore, and trust me, no one I talk to back home even knows that this Sanjaya guy exists. I found out about this dude due to the media coverage of controversy surrounding him. I'm going to watch this show tonight for the FIRST time, just because of this stupid publicity. Whoever thought of this Indian call center theory certainly has a wonderful imagination.
Look every year there is somebody that should be voted off early and isn't. and someone who shouldn't get voted off and does. Sanjamacalit will be voted off and yes the Indian-Americans and maybe the people over there in India are probably voting for him but so what, why do you think 2 American Idols and 1 runner up have been from Alabama? Its because people like my mother don't have a life and when they say Alabama all the rednecks there are like we can look good if they win so lets vote for them. Dont worry.
it is unfortunate that real singers are being eliminated because of him. That said this just may change the way that the voting is done the judges should have a count in the way that the contestants are voted off the show...if i were Simon i would leave the show too if he makes it to the final...such a mess and an imbarrasment !
sanjaya is a joker and the worst american idol. Blame simon, randy and paula for picking him. He has made a laughing stock of himself. Voters speed him out
I get sooooooo tired of people going on and on about how dumb AI is and how it caters to a dumb audience, it's a waste of broadcast time, no redeeming value, etc. Wah, wah, wah. Hmmm. That description, to me, sounds vaguely reminiscent of EVERY SINGLE MINUTE OF TELEVISION PROGRAMMING. You'd be hard pressed to find much of ANYTHING that has any redeeming value in it on the TV nowadays, but everybody likes to pick on AI because it's popular. If you don't like it, DON'T WATCH IT!! Change the channel. If you don't like it, don't get on forums like this and take the time to comment. If you hate it soooo much, then why take the time ti give it a minute of your time to post a message complaining about it. I mean come on. What's the matter with people anymore. I can't stand country music, but I'm certainly not going to go on some country music message board and start posting about what a waste country music is (not that I believe it is) or about how much I personally dislike it. Why? There's not reason for me to be in such a place in the first place, if I don't like it. Plus, it only serves to irritate the people who are there because they honestly DO like it. Same here. You don't like it, don't waste my time and irritate countless people by blah-blah-blahing on about how much the show stinks. Go find something else to do and someone else to annoy. With that, I will say I very much enjoy American Idol. I am a musician and have a reasonably discerning ear when it comes to music. People like Sanjaya really, for me, have no place in this competition. He is marginal at best. His butchering of "You Really Got Me" recently, had me extremely irritated. I cringe every time the results shows come one, knowing he's going to be kept around another week based on popularity (notoriety is more like it), rather than honest talent.
CSRs calling from the Indian call centers...hilarious. Obviously this writer knows nothing about the call center environment. First off the calls are handled by an IVR not live reps. Companies do not send those calls oversees, IVR calls are almost always handled in the US. Additionally, calls from outside the US are probably blocked and as mentioned, any company which saw a spike in outbound calls one night a week would probably fire that vendor without thinking twice. It's amazing what some people will say/write/do to get there name out there.
This is a Great IDEA!!!! Thanks LIZ, Hope they consider it for next season!!! (Reponse to Below) Why don't they change the voting & instead of voting for who you like vote for who you think should be eliminated. Then instead of votes being spread out they would be concentrated on who is eliminated. Liz Columbus, Ohio (Sent Tuesday, April 03, 2007 3:37 PM)
Why don't people start calling AI by what it really stands for - ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE! The Controversial Sanjaya is being kept around by the PRODUCERS of AI. They want people to watch what strange weird thing he'll do the next show. Yes, he's got no talent, no singing ability, not dancing ability, Why? He ATTRACTS VIEWERS! MILLIONS OF THEM by his STRANGE ANTICS. I believe this is true - why? AI never shows the actual vote totals, do they? NEVER do we see the numbers. For all we know the Producers have manipulated them to determine who goes home. And as long as Sanjaya is generating controversy - he'll continue to remain to "entertain" the American People. AI does it again - blinding the american people by using its own Artificial Intelligence to put one over on us all.
Not all "popular" singers are necessarily "good" singers. Bob Dylan, anyone?
If they don't get Sanjaya off the show NOW and start working with the remaining kids who can sing, this could be the last season for American Idol. No one will ever take this show seriously again. You may as well turn it into a vaudville show and start throwing pies at each other. No, forget that idea, at least vaudville was funny - American Idol is just sad.
I think they should just get rid of him, and put him on Nickelodeon or Disney channel or something. Cuz its obvious that its lil girls voting for him.
The majority of you out there just doesnt get it. They arent voting because he is cute or talented in any way, they are voting for him to destroy this show. Howard Stern and vote for the worst should get most of the credit when he is the next American Idol. I hate the show but listen to Howard everyday. I found myself calling at least 90 times for Sanjaya. That was just me. Stern has roughly 5 million listeners. If every one of his listeners voted 10 times each that would be 50,000,000 votes.
Sanjaya will hopefully be gone if there is any sanity whatsoever, but as long as the producers keep making money off of each call and text there is not a prayer of this kid disappearing anytime soon. With the idea of only voting to get rid of someone, why should the producers change the current system? They make money off of all the support calls and would make less off of a call to eliminate a contestant. It all comes down to dollars and sense - not cents - because this show is a moneymaker for Fox and the producers!!
I think AI needs to re-think their voting process, if for nothing else but the finale. The judges should have a 50% say in who is chosen the winner. This whole Sanjaya thing has gotten out of control, and might be the down fall of this program.
The only reason this is still going on with Sanjaya is because he is currently getting more publicity than any other American Idol contestant ever has! He is taking this and running with it; I am sure he is well aware of what is going on, but it's keeping him around, so he's just taking it as it comes. This whole season has been off, not because of Sanjaya, but because, by this time last season (and the one before that and the one before that), we, as fans, had been introduced into the lives of the contestants, so we were able to choose who we liked as people, as well as singers. This year has not provided us with that, so we are all just watching strangers and finding fault with most of them. People everywhere are talking about the contestants being boring and having no personality, but how do we really know that? All we see of them is their performances and critiques from the judges. I am not a fan of Sanjaya's (although my 5 year old it), but I can't blame him for making the most out of what is happening in the media right now!
I don't know why all of you people can't take it...what so wrong. He is a Kid and let him have FUN...you morons.......................
It's a shame Sanjaya has gone as far as he has but it is apparent there are people out there who want to mess with AI. I do put some of the blame on the judges who LET him go to Hollywood to begin with! He will get voted off before the finals and get a contract somewhere.....(memories of William Hung?????)
I am very pleased to see Sanjaya still in this competition. I am Indian and I love America and Americans but I am sad to see how ruthless some Americans have been in crticising a young, soulful, 17 year old boy who's only fault is he chose to take part in a reality show by auditioning like thousands of others have. I am appaled that some Americans have lost appreciation for the sheer innocence and effort the young man puts into his performancees. It cannot be easy as a 17 yr old to take in so much criticism week after week but yet he holds his head up high and performs. This I believe is resonating with American audiences across the nation who chose to vote him in every week. GO SANJAYA MALAKAR!
Enough is enough. Time for reality check guys and gals. And I say this as a proud Indian/American who is not a Sanjaya fan by any stretch of the imagination. 1) The preposterous and ludicrous call center theory has been irrefutably debunked above. Let us not bring it up EVER again. It was and is a racist theory. A rose by any other name......Only exposed that person's single digit IQ and bigotry. Even if the call center guys COULD vote, they would pick a deserving singer. They have far more integrity than those retarded sadistic jingoistic Natives who constantly put undeserving guys in power. A "wrong" American Idol wouldn't destroy anything. Just don't buy his records if he makes any. 2) Yes, referring to Sanjaya's East Indian heritage is RACIST. Helloo.. Did anyone claim that Lakisha and Melinda are still around because the entire blessed African continent is voting for them ? Did it not occur to you or do you think those folks can't afford TV sets unless they are donated by Bono or Gates ? 3) Why don't you blame Italians too as his mother is Italian ? Is it because he does not look like good ol' true blue Italian/Americans like Al Pacino or Robert De Nero or Giuliani or (may be even Sophia Loren) ? His hair is better than Giuliani's, by the way. 3) There is absolutely no reason to be so vicious to Sanjaya and spew venom incessantly. That only shows YOUR "class" not his. He is there because the 3 judges put him there. As both Stefani and Tony said: the guy CAN sing and entertain. Yes, there are many, many, many others on the show who can sing better and have more powerful voices. But that is not the criticism we hear. We only hear pure, unvarnished, distilled hatred from the so-called arrogant self-appointed music connoisseurs. 4) You guys always confuse "screaming high pitched notes" with real singing. Does Tony Bennett scream ? Does Norah Jones scream ? 5) Why do you love Madonna so much and buy her CD's by teh zillions? As Michael Jackson once said: She couldn't sing to save her life. One could go on and on..
The show never has had credibility so we are voting to show what it is. Last years final 2 showed that. So our MOVEMENT is going to hopefully have Sanjaya win. I can't believe some people actually think he is winning on his own. It's us Stern and VFTW.com Remember you can join us at anytime.
Ok, I watched Sanjaya for the first time yesterday, and am hoping it will be the last - he cannot sing. I like his attitude, or just the fact that he talks back to meanie Simon, but no - he wasn't even tolerable. In fact, if he is the ninth-best singer in the US right now, then maybe the US should start outsourcing singing to India too. Seriously.
I feel very sorry for those people who run after the rumor, first of all Sanjaya is not half Indian, he is half Nepali [also known as Gurkha, from second world war] and second of he is a little boy moving towards achieving something, so leave him alone y'll.
See I knew this was going to happen again, I stopped watching after season three and the fatal William Hung controversy,he couldnt sing, he didnt look good, and he had no personality, and now the same thing is happening with Sanjaya,I say just have him be the next voted off, because honeslty, I think American Idol is a show to be discovered for talent, not controversy or stupid grudges butween people,or ratings, but now that you look at it, in the end thats what this is,ratings...and its sad, there are so many people waiting to be dicovered and one of those people could have been in Sanjayas spot instaid of making an ass of himself like Sanjaya is. But what do I know, Im only a single voice...but ask any musician, and youll probably get the same awnser...
Sanjaya was never AI material. But he had an interesting, appealing voice in the auditions. His problem is that he has never chosen the right song for his kind of voice - not one. It's almost as if he is incapable of processing the advice given to him and using it for the better. He should have done a couple of Bill Withers numbers or even tried a Michael Franks song - jazzy, husky, with a very intimate style that doesn't call for vocal pyrotechniques. With the right songs he had the kind of voice that could have had a niche appeal. But he's all wrong for AI. And now he's bought into the silliest, most facetious aspect of the show and made things worse for himself.
