Simon has no words for Sanjaya

The singers on "American Idol" obviously want to hear good comments from every judge. But there's no question whose opinion means the most to them: Simon Cowell's. He may not be universally liked, but he's like the tough teacher feared by all the students. His respect is hard to earn, and it's worth all the more because of it. Paula will always find something nice to say, and Randy will usually join her, but hear a good word from Simon and the "Idols" know in their hearts that they've done well.

So what does it mean for two singers that Simon Cowell has simply refused to comment on their performances any more?

Simon pretty much gave up on Sanjaya Malakar last week, when the teen wore a fake Mohawk while singing No Doubt's "Bathwater." After half-heartedly attempting to address the hair, Simon said "I don't think it matters any more what we say, I genuinely don't. You are in your own universe and if people like you, good luck."

It seemed like this was just a one-off comment from Simon. But then this week, Sanjaya ditched the faux-hawk for slicked back hair and a white suit to sing old-time ballad "Cheek to Cheek." From his first note, he seemed off-key, but he gamely played his performance for all he was worth, even slow-dancing with Paula Abdul at the judges' table.

After he sang, it seemed that none of the judges wanted to discuss his singing. Randy Jackson said "I can't even comment on the vocals," refusing to explain why, and went on to praise Sanjaya for turning into a performer. Paula Abdul at least attempted to address the song, saying "the vocals were a little off at the beginning," but she, too, seemed at a loss for words and quickly retreated to thanking Sanjaya for dancing with her.

All eyes, now, were on Simon, and he seemed completely at a loss for words. "Let's try a different tactic this week: INCREDIBLE!" he said. He left it up to the viewers to determine whether he meant "incredibly bad," "incredible that you're still in this contest," or "I'm trying to make it sound like I'm praising you in hopes that reverse psychology will work its magic, here."

But now the other judges had decided that they'd found a new way to comment without really saying anything at all. Haley Scarnato, who's also struggled in the competition, was up next with a chanteusey performance of "Ain't Misbehaving" while wearing a tight, short green dress. Her performance, too, was weak vocally, but the judges still weren't willing to be honest. Randy Jackson did something he almost never does, which is immediately tried to pass the buck to Paula. Paula fell back on her "I'm the judge who always has something nice to say" schtick and praised Haley's dress.

At this point, Simon looked exasperated, though he really shouldn't have. At first he tried to scold the other judges, saying "That's rude, you should say what you think of the performance." But he started it, after all, by refusing to offer constructive criticism on Sanjaya's performance, and now he was reaping what he had sowed. He praised Haley's legs, as if he was trying to demonstrate how silly it was of Paula to praise her dress, but he just came off looking like a dirty old man. Finally he muttered something about Haley's performance being "pageanty."

The judges can refuse to comment on the singing if they want, despite Simon continually beating the drum about how "Idol" is a "singing competition." But as they sit there and mutter no-comments or compliment the Idols on their looks, they should remember one thing.

Sanjaya, Haley, all of them, were put through to the final 24 by Simon, Paula, and Randy's judgement alone. The viewers, whose opinions Simon has so roundly criticized these days, had nothing to do with it. The choice of the semifinalists was all on the judges' shoulders, and they need to face up to that now and take responsibility. Even if, as Simon's worst nightmare would seem to be, Sanjaya wins. Just remember: Simon put him there.

I did as promised after Sanjaya made it through last week. I didn't watch the show. We kicked off the new season of Deadliest Catch and I can tell ya........it was GREAT! Idol has lost me for this season and maybe next too! (Notice I did still have to come in here and post a comment after reading the article?) Bad habits ARE hard to break!
What the judges did with Haley was unforgivable. Even if she walked into it, with her comments about only wanting Simon's comments. The fact they dismissed her, only commented on her looks. Nothing constructive. They pushed the boundaries of decency. Now the comments about Sandaya was warranted, because nothing they say honestly will get the kid out. So might as well stay silent, or just keep quiet. But what they did with Haley was wrong! Really wrong!
Note to writer: The judges put through the top 24, not the top 12. Public voting begins with knocking the bottom two off until you reach 12. That means Sanjaya has been voted for for a lot longer than you think. I still can't believe the judges couldn't find three singers who were better than Sanjaya, Antonella Barba, and that god-awful Sundance Head from Hollywood week. Ultimately, the show suffers for their bad judgement.
Regarding the Cooper piece, the judgment of Randy, Simon, and Paula put the contenders through to the top 24, not top 12. The top 12 were determined by America's phone calls. So, we can only blame the judges for giving America the opportunity to dial in for Sanjaya. The fact he's still here is America's fault.
I thought Paula and Randy were quite rude to Haley. Recall that before she performed she answered a viewer question and sort of eluded that it meant more to her what Simon thought of her performance as opposed to Paula or Randy's opinion. I don't think Haley meant it that way though. It just sounded that way.
I think it's a shame that the best vocalists, Melinda, Lakisha and Blake are overshadowed by Sanjaya and Haley. It's not a contest about the best vocalist with star appeal anymore. It's all about ruining American Idol's credibility this time. And yes, Simon helped put Sanjaya and Haley where they are today - God help us.
This whole thing with Sanjaya is out of hand. What is the point of messing Idol up? Why shoudl Stern decide to vote for the worst? Is he having a power kick? Maybe the people in Sanjaya's town, and friends and others want the kid to succeed. Great!! But people need to understand that even if they like someone that does not mean they should win. It just means he has seen he is supported he should feel great about that. I say if he has the dignity and respect for his fellow conestants, he should back out and say "Thanks for the support, but I am not the best and I do not want to upset any one else's chance to succeed." That way the show still has validity, we will see if Stern is really after the power to "Destroy" a show, and Sanjay looks like the hero.
If you don't get it by now, here's the deal: Sanjaya goes through to the final 5 mainly through the votes of the teeny boopers. The idealistic 35 and over want to see a talented person win. They begin to vote in earnest in the last four weeks. Sanjaya is finally off; Idol wins. See, the judges should stay quiet. The voters will truly decide!
Let's face it, the purpose of American Idol is to make an unknown singer a star. They've succeeded and the show isn't even over. NONE of the winners from any of the previous seasons are on everyone's mind like Sanjaya is. He's already a star. It doesn't matter if he should be, he is. This season is a success, they've created a star. And let's face it, the current music scene is proof you don't have to be Bocelli to be a hit. There are a LOT of platinum record people who suck, and he doesn't.
Haley got what she was looking for and DRESSED FOR - a positive comment from Simon, albeit about her nice legs. She dresses revealingly, ironically,to cover up........her weaker vocals vis-a-vis her competitors.
Hopefully tonight will end the Sanjaya era. I am totally baffled as to how he remains on the show. One thing I do have to give him credit for is his gimmicks. He does have a new one every week. He is like a bad commercial. You really hate them but you remember them also. As for Simon, he tells it like it is. No sugar coating there and he does have good taste in legs, even if it was not appropriate at the moment. Haley is a beautiful young lady. I thought she had a pretty good night singing.
One might wonder is there a major weakness in this voting system? I'm scared to death that distractors will continue teaming up for Sanjaya and finally vote Sanjaya in for American Idol finale. Might Sanjaya & his supporters bring down American Idol? Hope not! But sure thing as said above the judges carry some blame. I know they regret every single day but it seems he is here to stay. I hope he leaves tonight. I have nothing against him only he cant sing.
My sentiments exactly, the judges put Sanjaya through to hollywood. So fess up judges!!! Hopefully, America will see that this young man has taken about all he can and has gone as far as he should be in the first place. I for one can't see anyone but his friends and family liking his performances. Well, American Idol, good luck next season, if there is such a thing.
As much as I think he should go, people have to realize that Sanjaya was put through to the top 24 based on about 90 seconds total of singing in front of the judges. Lots of people can pull off a few seconds of singing well. It's not until we get to the real performances that we find out who's really got it and who doesn't. Sundance really WAS good, for the small amount of time we saw him, before they got to the top 24. Then, when he really had to bring it, he couldn't.
I think what the judges did to Haley was perfectly acceptable. Basically, week after week, she's said in one way or another that only Simon's praise means anything to her. So, I wouldn't have anything to say if I were Randy or Paula, either.
I did not watch idol last night! It is a sin that other have been voted off not even giving them a real chance of winning and that character Sanjaya is still in the back week after week. A SHAME!!! I will return when Sanjaya is voted off!!!!!!!!!! Who know maybe he will win and I will have many nights to view other TV programs. I am DISAPPOINTED!!!!!!!!
Constructive criticism is the point here. Don't be rude, obnoxious, or just plain unkind to these young people. They hang on your comments. After all they are there by your choice. So judges step up to your responsibility and do your job in a constructive way!
I hate to comment on the petty stuff, but I really don't understand how this article was posted tuesday at 6:48 pm. The show doesn't start until 9! Maybe it's just something with the site... but anyway. I laughed hysterically when Simon made his "Incredible" comment about Sanjaya. I'm so tired of him making it through and if he doesn't go home soon, I feel I might lose all hope in the show. All that aside, I really liked Chris Richardson last night. It helps that he's nice to look at!
I don't know if anyone else heard Sanjaya's comments last night after Simon said "incredible"...but he said "Welcome to the University (or Universe) of Sanjaya!" How smug! I can't WAIT until this guy gets voted off. I'm not going to give up watching though!
This show has totally lost me as a viewer. It has become a joke. What happened to the talent contest? Season 1 & 2 were the best and then after that, it became a popularity contest. Simon, Paula and Randy have not given any REAL constructive critisim since the first two seasons. The voting system needs to be changed IF this show stays on the air another season
Maybe America should be voting for the worst singer not their favorite!!!!
Out of all the folks who auditioned, the top 24 were the ABSOLUTE BEST according to the judges. Now, they seem to think America is confused or wrong or something. they gave us Sanjaya... I really hope we give him back to them as the next Amercian Idol. Maybe next time they will give us 24 people who can actually sing and really make this a competition. But putting through 3 or 4 singers who can sing and a bunch of cannon fodder has to stop. Votes for Sanjaya can only improve this show for the future.
Judges should stay within their own boundries and make comments on the performance in regard to "singing" only. They can make other comments but not irrelevent as legs , shoes, hair or the outfit. They can leave that for the voters to evaluate.
I thinks American Idol is just a popularity contest. It is not based on talent. I, too have stop watching the show, especially after they voted Stephanie Edwards off. Why is Sanjaya still on there. He has no talent at all. He should have been gone. The show is a joke and I believe it is rigged.
I'm over Idol, it's so ridiculous anymore, I've stopped watching...the contestants this season are unbalanced, some can sing and some can't. Sanja, or whatever his name is should remove himself from the show...he can't sing and it's embarrassing. The judges are probably as bored and disgusted as the viewing audience. I have better things to do with my time.
I agree with TraciB. The show has lost me this season. I just hope that next season they will figure out a new voting system that won't allow people to "vote for the worst" and ruin the show for everyone else. If Sanjaya makes it all the way and Simon quits the show, I will never watch it again.
The judges were responsible for choosing the top 24 contestants. It is obvious the judges thought Sanjaya was good enough to be in the show. Their was no harsh judgements about Sanjaya in those early performances. This Sanjaya phenomenon only started when Sundance Head was voted out. This caused the judges to revolt against him by negatively criticising his performance whether it is waranted or not. The american people no longer cares about the judges opinions. Two of the judges have resigned in criticising this kid and now embraces the fact that this kid is entertaining to millions of Americans. He will perform for several more weeks and even if he loses the entertainment industry already recognize this kids appeal - not only to younger viewers but also to adult viewers. He performed Cheek to Cheek very nicely.
Sanjaya is like a "Paris Hilton" or a "Anna Nicole Smith"! He is a mediocre talent but he will be famous for being famous. These people cry all the way to the bank $$$$$!
Sanjayka is a horrible singer, every song sounds the same, I think the judges are doing the right thing by not saying anything about Sanjayka, it really doesn't matter, his just there......
I still love American Idol. Those kids do a wonderful job. I doubt that there are too many of us off the American Street that could go up before judges, TV cameras and America and do what they do. It is frightful enough to sing and perform before your home town, but to do what they do...incredible. I give each and every one of those people kudos for trying to be on top of their game and competing in a fun emotional filled competition. So many of today's competitions end up in anger, and hurt. It is so refreshing to see a group of talented people who honestly care about their competitors, strutt their stuff and suffer when one of them have to go home. Congrats to all of the remaining contestants...you are doing a great job!!!
It's a Sanjaya Universe and you are all just paying rent in it...you are paying rent, aren't you? Well you should be. Sanjaya will easily outsell Rueben, Taylor and that illiterate chick named after a Disney movie - all of them being thoroughly forgettable. Lakisha Jones in the bottom three tonight! (She's behind on her rent to Sanjaya).
What I can't beleave is that you people still watch this crap.
I would love to see the look on Simons face if Sanjaya gets through. PRICELESS! The boy's got my vote.
I really think next season it should be half the judges' vote and half of the viewers' vote. Sanjaya needs to go, the show has lost it's umph with him there.
I don't think that Sanjaya is a good singer. His vocals are not powerful at all and hard to hear at times. But the theory about VFTW and Howard Stern does'nt sound right either. It takes a lot of commitment to pickup the phone and vote multiple times just because the VTFW guys said so. Even if that's the case, I don't think it could last this long. Either he is the heartthrob of the teeny girls or there's something else going on...
Maybe we need to change judges next season? Lulu for Paula? Maybe a round - robin type of system. But the judges did complain that this was a tough year and they weren't hearing quality. But stars are made, just look at Britney, Rihanna, and so many others. The one thing that AI has is a fan based. The record company is almost guaranteed that when the CD is released 100,000+ copies will sell. Now, at this point it gets rough. Who among them is a star? who is marketable? My money is on Jordin.
Personally, I think Haley did pretty well and is getting better. Sanjaya had potential and still does, but he pbvioulsy needs more time than one season to get to a really serious level. Personally, I think people need to ask only one question when they vote: "Would I buy their cd?" Not just if they are a good singer and performer. Singing alone does not make a music star
I dont even watch Idol bc Sanjaya ruins the whole show. Face it, all this publicity will lead to a victory for Sanjaya.
I actually like watching AI for Sanjaya. He's entertaining and I hope he wins. There are a lot of artists that don't sing well live, but with studio magic, they're great. Can you say Disney??? Everyone voted off so far this season needed to go anyway.
The word Idol means "One that is adored, often blindly or excessively. (dictionary.com " so American Idol does not necessarily have to be about singing its about popularity, so if Sanjaya is getting more votes than others obviously he is more popular. Its fun to see him appear week after week, and that's what keeps the ratings and drama of American Idol going. The judges/creators know that he is a good way to attract viewers, b/c they tune in each week to see if he will stay or if he will go, and how badly he will sing this week or how weird his hair is gonna look. He is obviously popular enough to get peoples attention...let him enjoy it :)
This competition is supposed to be something serious. A life changing journey for whoever wins. I think the focus is way off now and the people watch the show just to se 'what happens next".. Bring back the real competition please.. Judges..control your show .. give us something to vote on.. not waste our time with performers making headlines and lowing the standards of this competition.
While Sanjaya may be out of his league vocally, he has done what the others have failed to do--- create an image. That is what makes people famous. Look at Paris Hilton, is she good at anything? No, she created herself and is now a household name. Unfortunately in our society, that is how it works!!
American Idol benefits from Sanjaya. I did not watch AI until hearing about Sanjaya, and last week, I watched for the first time. I admit that I am not a music fan, or even a reality TV fan, but I don't see anything wrong with voting for Sanjaya. He seems like a nice kid, and is really courageous for going on TV even though I am sure he knows he is not a good singer. If America can vote for Dubya to be President for 8 years, why not vote for Sanjaya to be winner of AI for this ONE season?
I don't really care if Americans listens to the judges; it's America's choice. What I do care about is that there are different "critique" styles used for different contestants. For example, Phil gets critiqued severely with regard to his vocals and Sanjaya gets no critique at all. If they think Sanjaya has below average pipe, America should be hearing that week after week until he is gone!
stop voting for sanjayka, he is the worst singer, and will probably be spending a couple nights sleeping over michael jacksons house when this is all over. I praise simon for his comments and beleive he is the only honest judge on the show. i am getting sick of "yo dog" check it out it started a little pitchy but you came together at the end it ah right. and from paula, " i just love you' you are beutiful and the callers will love you, come on stop all the lying stand up and tell these kids the truth, flirting with contestants and dancing like junky lookimg for a fix, just sit there and do your job, and be greatful you have a job.. since you can't sing or dance anymore. STOP LYING TO US AND THE CONTESTANTS BEFORE YOU TURN A GREAT SHOW INTO THE GONG SHOW
Everytime I watch a show I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Sanjaya is voted off! I don't find him talented or charming, I actually find him irritating. If he had any character, he would have taken himself out of the competition before more worthy singers were voted off. Remember his comment from last night's show - he actually thinks he can sing. If he's not voted off soon - I will also boycott watching the show. Howard Stern and votefortheworst.com should be ashamed of how they are trying to force ugliness into the show simply to get themselves noticed and make money. This isn't funny or amusing and it shows that they lack integrity for trying to bring this show down when it has so many fans that tune in each year. This is a good example of what is wrong with America today - no character, no integrity and all about the "love" of the almight dollar.
I too had no comments after Sanjaya performed last night. We watch Idol with a group of others (which is slimming down greatly this year) and no one could say anything when he finished other than that we all felt Sanjaya was kissing up to the judges by dancing with Paula Abdul. He's not a talented singer and the only reason people are finding him entertaining at this point is because he's outlandish (kind of like going to the freak show to see something new!) My husband and I didn't think Haley did very well last night either and both of us totally understood why Simon made the comment about her legs since she gave him nothing else to comment about.
Here is to hoping Sanjaya makes it through yet another week. I know Idol is loving the publicity they are getting from this. Many say they will no longer watch, but honestly the majority probably cannot help themselves. The show is becoming a parody of itself.
Sanjaya sucks! He is ruining the show.
why is everyone picking on sanjaya he isnt really any worse than Chris i sing through my nose richardson or haley i cant sing so look at my legs instead or phil im just terrible stacey. in fact he is more entertaining than either phil or chris i would say haley too but im a guy so not really but cut the kid some slack and give him credit for going out there and doing it
