Meet MSNBC.com's new comic strips

Filed Under:

It was way back in January that we first started discussing updating MSNBC.com's comic-strip offerings. The much-beloved "Fox Trot" had moved to Sundays only, and "Boondocks" has been on hiatus for months, with no word as to when creator Aaron McGruder might bring the strip back.

I offered up the list of comics we could use to replace the old strips, and we received more than 400 comments discussing and debating the potential newcomers. We know we can't make everyone happy -- though we have dozens of comics to choose from, some of you clamored for different strips.  (We answered some of your questions about that here.) Many readers were upset that fans of "Dog Eat Doug" staged an online campaign to dominate the voting in our online poll, feeling that this was unfair.

But the online poll didn't determine the final choices, and neither did the posted Weblog comments. Yes, we took your feedback into consideration, but we also know that online polls can be manipulated in numerous ways. We'd be stupid to trust them too implicitly. We let your feedback be a guide, but editorial opinions also played a role.

Still, in the end, the two comic strips we chose to add to our online lineup are "Lio" and, yes, "Dog Eat Doug."

"Lio" reminds me a little bit of the legendary "Calvin and Hobbes," and there's something creative and fascinating about how the strip has no dialogue, yet artist Mark Tatulli manages to make Lio come to life. In the sample strips our supplier offered, Lio beats Death at the board game Life, and helps a rabbit escape a trap by trapping the rabbit's pursuer. You gotta love a kid like that.

"Dog Eat Doug" didn't get all those readers to flood our poll by accident. This cute strip features two hard-to-resist stars -- Sophie the dog and Doug the baby. Whether you have dogs, kids, or neither, you may find you can relate to these cute rivals-turned-pals.

I wish we could add more strips, because among my top choices would be "Get Fuzzy" and "Red and Rover" (love the recurring Marcia Brady jokes!). But thankfully, both of those strips are easy to find online elsewhere.

And as we have discussed here before, the classic strip "For Better or For Worse" is heading to a kind of hybrid format in the near future. "FBOFW" will combine old strips with new bits, such as having a character appear and muse upon old times, thus leading into a vintage storyline. So we may have another empty comics space to fill sometime soon. For now, check out our new new additions to the comics family, and we hope you get a laugh or two. These days, we all need all the laughter we can get.

Hooray for Lio... I had my fingers crossed that the little guy would make it in! Some of the strips give me glimpse of what my daughter may be like in the future... and I still find it funny!
I had never heard of 'Lio' before today but did enjoy the first strip offered up today. It had a certain 'Far Side' quality to it. I am still neurtal on "Dog Eat Doug", but will give it a chance.
Non Sequitur has got to be one of the funniest strips. I look forward to reading it daily for the past 10 years. I am glad MSNBC now has it.
how can you say Boondocks is on a hiatus???? I read it every day on AZCENTRAL.COM, it continues from where MSNBC left off.
Lio is simply wretched. Poor choice, and I'm sorry to see you wasting pixels on such unfunny dreck.
The only problem with Lio and Doug is that they are not funny. I can’t believe you let Fuzzy get away.
Lio is a bit of an acquired taste. I hated it when our local paper started carrying it, but it's very imaginative, as it has to be to get a point across without dialog. Personally I wish papers would quit carrying Peanuts and Cathy. Neither one are funny (Peanuts = depressed kids, and Cathy = women obsessing on their weight and looks).
Not "For Better or For Worse". It's been getting worse and worse. Creeps like Gerald (who refers to a special ed. girl as a "retard" and is annoyed at April for hanging out with her) and Anthony (don't get me started) are portrayed as males worth hanging onto. And John (who was hanging out at his daughter Liz's bedroom) probably should be in Dateline's predator line-up any day now.
Sorry, but Calvin and Hobbes remains one of the best if not the best comic strip ever...
Lio and Doug Eat Doug are pretty disappointing. But the, many good comics have gone or are going away, including Fox Trot, Boondocks, Calvin and Hobbes, Far Side etc.
Lio is the best strip since Smokey Stover!
If you say we all need more laughter today, why did you get rid of Imus. He made a mistake, but he also gave us good, clean laughs every morning. It's a much sadder morning around here now. We miss him. Our TV is dark. Bring him back...
I am very disappointed that you no longer provide "Boondocks". It is/was the sharpest/edgiest comic strip on MSNBC. Shame on you for dropping this strip. Now you provide bland vanilla comic strips in its place.
Dog Eat Doug is one of the funniest comics around. I love the interactions between Doug and Sophie. Great job MSN for picking the right comic!
I think both additions are great! Look forward to adding them to my daily read.
My vote would be "Bringing Up Father" and old timer featuring Jiggs and Maggie....Most people today have never seen them. My second vote would be "Barney Google & Snuffy Smith" again comics from the past that would be a real treat to re-enjoy
Lio rocks. Dog Eat Doug is a bit soft, but I'll give it more time.
Steven H. Marks: "Boondocks" has been in reruns for months, as is "Fox Trot." If the cartoonist were still drawing fresh strips for "Boondocks," we would continue to offer it, but he doesn't look like he is coming back any time soon -- maybe ever. I love that strip, but can only take so many reruns.
"The Boondocks" is not on hiatus, the strip was discontinued because Aaron Mcgruder was spending more time as executive producer on the TV series version of the strip and was not making deadlines.
I'm glad Boondocks is out. It was not funny at all.
Where's Pearls Before Swine? Where's Get Fuzzy? You've got to be kidding. The choices you have here aren't the top comics of the day.
I read the Lio archives and LOL'd nine times. I haven't LOL'd at a comic since Far Side retired.
Pearls Before Swine Bizarre, yet fascinating
I like "Lio" - but how could anyone not mention Mutts!! Scheesh!, to quote Moochie! and little Earl is the cutest dog since Snoopy!
What a terrible loss that you did not add Agnes! This is an original strip in hundreds of papers across the country. I know, I travel a lot and enjoy reading her humor, antics, and wisdom. This is one of the great strips of our time with a wide audience. My friends and I are very disappointed that you did not see that.
It can many times become difficult to divide the reliable girl dog work from the abominable.
This is November 11, 2007. What has happened to the
daily comic strips that used to be on this website?
Since you unveiled MSNBC's new look, they are missing!!!
