Don't bet against Blake on 'American Idol'

Sanjaya has only been gone two weeks, and it's as if he never existed. All the "Idol" fans who bemoaned his presence on the show and tried to blame the entire country of India for keeping him around have been quiet lately. Every season, viewers wail about how the voting messes things up, but almost every season, things straighten out by the end.

This year, it took until the show got down to the final four, but it's hard to argue with the remaining singers. Melinda Doolittle has been the favorite to win since the beginning. LaKisha Jones has had occasional struggles, but for much of the season, she was right up there almost as good as Melinda. Teen Jordin Sparks has both a winning smile and a voice that belies the fact that she and Sanjaya are the same age -- 17. But it's Blake Lewis, the only male singer remaining, who has managed to mix a fun personality with a good voice and a sense of creativity towards his music that goes beyond the simple beatboxer label.

Melinda's been my pick all along, but I'm wavering a little now. Blake has shown viewers something that no other "Idol" singer has displayed so far. He's a little reminiscent of the rare season when "America's Next Top Model" features a model who actually can name three Vogue photographers and can hold her own in an interview.

Whatever you thought of his performance of "You Give Love a Bad Name," it was ambitious, creative and fun. Bon Jovi worried about him before he sang, describing it as "Sixteen measures of him not singing on a show that's supposed to showcase singers." And had Blake seen it written down that way, he, too, might have had second thoughts. But he has what all real artists have -- an innate confidence and a trust in himself.

Melinda could still win, but I wouldn't bet against the beatboxer from Seattle.

Melinda is great and will do well in the business and then there is Blake..............WOW.....what a performer. It has been a little unsettling the last few weeks where he has sung straight - but Tuesday night was GREAT. Even a senior citizen like me can really get into him and he is HOT! (I love the dark hair)
If you would have ask me two weeks ago who would win A.I., I would have said "Jordin!" Now i believe it will be Melinda vs. Blake in the final with Melinda taking home the crown!
I have backed Melinda and Blake all along as being the top two...(I saw a uniqueness in Blake from the beginning)...but after Blake's "take" on the Bon Jovi song, I wouldn't rule him out as having a big edge on Melinda now!!! Melinda, tho a GREAT singer,(and she WILL go far)...after all this time, still doesn't have the "stage presence" needed for concerts, & personal tours, etc. She's "sweet" but not "edgie & fresh"!! As long as she is in a recording studio she could probably belt out those songs for platinum cd's, but Blake has PLENTY of "stage presence", a GREAT personality to go along with his unique arrangements on different genre's of music...and he too, WILL make platinum cd's, since he could actually appeal to a wider range of audience. He's cute, unique in style, and NOT afraid to take a risk. He BELIEVES in his own ability, so I think he just might take the lead from Melinda and possibly win this years American Idol!!! Tho I love Melinda and her voice, I prefer Blake's wider range and appeal, so I, personally would BUY Blake's cd's before Melinda's!!! And when trying to decide your "final" vote for the New Idol...think of it in terms..."who would YOU rather see in concert...Melinda or Blake???...the answer for me is...Blake"!!
Melinda will win but Blake will sell the albums. It is a reverse of last year in that Taylor Hicks won because he was "interesting" but people bought the Daughtery and Katharine McPhee albums instead. I think that Melinda just might end up as the next Rubin and Blake a younger and a much more hip, Clay.
Melinda is a very good singer, but I don't think she's right for American Idol. She's just not young and fresh enough. She'll have a great career in music, but my money is on Blake to win it.
Melinda is the best singer, no doubt, but she's no American Idol. But MAN, is she boring - like a freakin' robot. And her personality is grating. I hope anyone wins but her. Jordin should win this.
In my opinion, the final 4 are all great! I'm a Blaker girl. I thought his Bon Jovi-beat boxing was amazing! I love Lakisha and Jordin alike. Melinda is too arrogant for my taste. She is good and she knows it. Cockiness is a turn-off. Go Blake, Lakisha and Jordin!
I'm a 68 year old grandmother and I'd buy a Blake Lewis CD in a minute. He just too cute and has a wonderful voice as well as personality plus!
I too was not bonding with this group this year... I would turn it on and then read a magazine at the same time, because I just didn't find any of them interesting - except Blake. Everytime he came on I would look up from my magazine and pay attention. I found myself dancing on Tuesday, and then cheering for him. He's got my votes.
I totally agree with this article. While Melinda has obviously been the future AI from the start, it's Blake who interests me the most. His take on the songs her performs are creative and worth watching. His Tuesday performance was outstanding and his risk taking paid off. While Melinda may be the winner in the end, Blake's future as a star seems more explosive. There are Melindas are out there everywhere...but Blakes are hard to find.
In my opinion, Blake is the most creative and talented of the four, and different from other season winners (which is an edge). I'd like to see him sweep. The others have a future, no doubt about it, and well-deserved, but Blake is a winner.
Blake is my pick! He's the only one taht's original! I think Melinda is very talented but would be no fun in concert. She acts like a scared little mouse.
Blake is the best, creative, nice looks and not full of himself. Time for a change in the music industry. Melinda is too show tuney.
Blake rules, his future album will be success, he even has stage name already, "Blake", how cool is that
While Melinda is really good Blake shined as a real star Wednesday .He showed he is not just a singer but can also arrange music and his rendition of "You Give Love A Bad Name ,' was so awesome it was actuially better than the original version and I can't wait to see Blake record his version and I for one will buy the CD.
Two words: Bl. Ake.
While Blake is creative for this competition, the 3 ladies left are far better singers. I think Melinda is the best pure singer Idol has had, ever. No pitch issues, never oversings, just a joy to listen to. I think Blake may be a more interesting performer with the beatboxing, but that's not singing. I hope that Melinda wins, based on the purity of her talent. I think the final 4 all have shots at great careers, though.
I have to say that I absolutely love Blake and truly hope he wins!! He is so different but yet very current. I like Melinda and she can definitely sing but I just can't see her surviving in the mainstream music past the show.
Who cares? All four of these "idols" have no personality to speak of and marginal talent. You can go to any church and pull out talent similar or better than the "divas" and Blake is a joke of epic proportions. Whoever wins this will struggle to outsell Taylor Hicks, who has the worst selling idol winner album so far. The only name that anyone will remember from this season is Sanjaya!
I almost want Blake to get voted off sooner just so that he can start working on an album ASAP. But I also think it'd be great if he won becuase he is just so different from the previous winners on the show. He's had my vote since the beginning of the season.
Boom!!!Hahaha Blake owned BonJovi night! Seriously, the guy is a musical genius. Im interested to hear what all you others think...to me, Melinda destroyed "Have a nice day", by BonJovi. I have never heard it sung so bad. For some strange reason, the judges complimented her, but yet it was beyond bad. I really think Simon is partial to Melinda and Lakisha. No one is giving Blake the Praise that he desurves. When he sang "You give love a bad name", it was perfect. It was probably the freshist, coolest, most modern song on Idol to date. Even if he doesnt win, he will out sell the winner...just like Daughtry did. Melinda who? Honestly, she is so boring, its the same thing over and over and over. She can sing the old songs, but when she actially has to sing like its 2007, she just flops. Would you actially buy her cd?
Having watch "Idol" every week I must say that I believe that the last 4 remainder of the exact right ones to be standing. Next week is set to be a test for everyone! I do however find it hard that to think that Blake will go next week. Although when it comes to singing he cant hold a note to the other three, but then again we all know this isnt a singings show, its a popularity contest which is why Blake has a shot at winning. Honestly I dont think Melinda even needs the show anymore she has proved time in and time out that she can ANYTHING and propbably has the record studios calling her. I would like to see Jordin win, she has the voice the presence and youth to be able to pull it off!!! I doubt she will have a meltdown. As for Lakisha I love her singing and with next week theme, I think she may stick around if she pulls something great out of her hat!
Of all the contestants, Blake is shaping up to be the one that could flourish in the music industry without the Idol record contract. His onstage talents are the most well-rounded (singing, scatting, beatboxing, dancing);moreover,he has the ability to write and produce lyrics and music. Blake definitely has a shot at winning Idol. But he doesn't need to. He is the Chris Daughtry to Melinda's Cat McPhee
Melinda is a very talented singer. But ask yourself, beyond American Idol, could she produce an orginal album that you might actually buy? Blake has desplayed not only the talent to sing, but the showmanship and creative innovation that is required to be truly sucessful in the music industry. This should be considered our we could end up with another Ruben or Taylor, talented, but largely unmarketable
I have not been as interested as the other years...I am getting to where I like Blake now and the 17 year old girl is fabalous....I don't care for Laquretia or melinda....
If Lakisha was as talented in picking the right songs, then, no doubt, she would be right beside Melinda; the girl can blow. She proved that during her rendition of "And I am telling you". Don't count her out yet! Jordan Sparks has a good voice but sings in "the box" - she isn't creative enough, in my opinion. Blake is skillful with his arrangements, but can't rearrange every song likewise without becoming boring.
I believe also that all of the finalists are winners. Every person left on that stage will do well whether they win the competition or not. I rooted for Daughtry last year, and was upset when he left, but where I am in the country, he has made it more than the others! In watching this season from the beginning, my heart went out to Phil. He missed his daughters birth to apply for the show, and when asked what was more important, he was the sweetest when he said "his family". I don't think that he was the best singer on the show, but he did find his niche and will do well now that he is off.
It is finally a singing competion after Sanjaya's exit. I have favored Melinda all along, but Jordin is continually catching my eye. So young, so much promise. Jordin and Melinda is who I see facing off for the final two.
Blake all the way!. He has the creativity and the flexibility to perform successfully in many different genres.
If Melinda doesn't win then something is wrong in the "Land Of Idol" !
Top two will be Melinda and Blake. Blake will ignore the fact that it's a singing competition and keep the beatboxing. And of course Melinda will simply sing her way to winning. Without gimmicks.
I agree with you,I think Melinda will win but Blake could come up on the inside and win.My choice to win is BLAKE,'cause he's the most original of all.
I love Melinda and I love Jordon. But I'm absolutely smitten with Blake. I love his originality that he gives to each of his songs. I vote that Blake may take it all.
I always think of the contestants by wondering which CD I would purchase... and there's no doubt I would buy Blake's music. I like Melinda, don't get me wrong. She's got wicked talent. But she doesn't make me mesmerized like Blake does. Blake has talent and personality AND he makes music I would listen to every day. My money is on Blake... I think he's going to keep surprising us all.
I hope it is a Blake/Melinda Finale. I would be happy if either of them won. Being the runner up is just as good so everyone would be happy. I don't like Jordin, she is too fake and the judges are trying to hard to push her down folks throats. Lakisha just has not seemed happy to be there.
Blake totally rocks.Undoubtedly Melinda has the best voice & can rock a performance but she lacks personality.Anyway, these are my 2 idols & I'll be happy as long as that's the top 2.
I know Melinda is strong but when it comes down to "who would I actually buy tickets to go and see?" The answer is Blake, He is really the only one. Melinda is good but its like "We have seen this before."
I know it is a toss up. Lakisha, no. Melinda sings and acts the song, she is great! Blake has a very special voice and adaptibility like Melinda. He seems to do best in songs out of his comfort zone,I think. Jordin is very talented and I believe she will succeed in another venture.
Blake is dope. He'll go up against Doolittle in the showdown. Toss up at that point. Doolitlte is great but has an OJ head on a Gary Coleman body. That won't get it in the end.
I agree with this article. Melinda is a great singer but Blake is a great artist! He's musically gifted and exemplifies what American Idol is about. My votes are for Blake for that reason. I think Melinda is great also but her "surprised" facial expressions have got to go. She needs to show more confidence when she is complimented!
There's absolutely no question as to the most talented singer on the show. Melinda is light years ahead of the others. To suggest otherwise is simply foolhardy and unreal. That said, we all know the best talent doesn't always win. Both Blake and Jordin do carry a certain charisma that could win it for them. It would be a shame if Melinda doesn't win this year because the talent gap is so wide it seems to be a no brainer.
Though Melinda is by far the most talented, I hope she does not win. She does not need the win. She already has a good chance in the music world. The crown should go to Lakisha which would give her a better chance of a future in music. Lakisha is far more talented than either Blake or Jordin.
Here are three words for Melinda - pre. dict. able. or maybe two, bor. ing. Go Blake!!!!!!
I think that Melinda has a record deal regardless of winning the show. She already has the experience and stage presence. I think Jordin needs Idol to get along. She really is an incredible vocalist but because she is young, Idol will really help her. Blake is very original...he will go very far. Chris was becoming very samey. Every song he sang sounded the same.
Blake, Blake, Blake to win. Keep voting America for the true and creative American Idol......
I absolutely love Blake. Although I think Lakisha is a great singer, she is not as good as Melinda, Jordin, and Blake. I know Melinda is the "favorite" to win, but I'm voting for Blake. I think his unique sound makes him stand out, even when he doesn't change a thing about the song he's singing.
fun.unique.never boring.extraordinary.blake.
I have to agree with Sally Sally. Melinda is, hands down, the best vocalist. She even showed a little attitude on Tuesday. But Blake has the whole package of what American music fans would consider their "idol" (a term I'm not at all fond of). I think the final 2 should be Melinda and Blake with Blake as the final winner. But Melinda will definitely not have to do backup singing anymore!

sanjaya was the best in my book, now I look forward to Blake winning the show
