Locke's still key to 'Lost'

First off, how stupid would the show have to be to kill off Locke? I'm not buying it. ABC just announced that the show has three more seasons, 48 more episodes to go. Are they going to kill off a character who's been part of the heart of the show since the beginning? Not to mention a character who's been intimately linked to the island's powers in ways that no one else is, and one who's already seen the island heal him from paralysis. If Mystery Island can fix his broken back and withered legs, surely a bullet to the gut is nothing.

Locke has always been different -- from almost the show's premiere, viewers have argued about whether he is good or evil, whether he has the castaways' best interests at heart or only his own, whether he will somehow conquer the mysteries of the island or they will conquer him. Jack was presented as the island's leader, but his goody-two-shoes straightforwardness turned off more than one viewer.

Locke, masterfully played by Terry O'Quinn, managed to always keep fans guessing. His troubled past, his take-charge attitude, and his visible struggles have all fascinated us. Who can't identify, even if just a little bit, with a man who had Walter Mitty-like dreams of strength and success, but in reality, was mocked by jerks at the box company where he worked?  To see him discover, once on the island, that his outer strength for once matched his inner abilities, was a smartly developed plot.

For several episodes early in this season, Locke had been underutilized, his character allowed to fade into the background as the Others came to the forefront. Like other fan favorites, including Hurley and Sayid, he was relegated to an occasional witty line or minor scene. And he was missed.

In recent weeks, more of Locke's past has unfolded. Viewers finally learned about how he landed in the wheelchair (no surprise, his evil dad was behind it). And Locke,  eerily like creepy Other Ben, managed to get revenge on daddy dearest.

Locke was back this week, however, in an intriguing episode where he got to pound on Other Mikhail, a rather satisfying scene for regular viewers. He also learned, via Ben, that Ben didn't just kill his own father, he led the massacre of the original Dharmans. And the episode tied into Locke's mystery powers, too, when Ben took him to see supposed Other leader, Jacob. In a scene reminscent of HBO's "Carnivale" and its mysterious Management, Jacob at first seemed not to exist. (Eagle-eyed viewers, however, have already snatched screen grabs of a brief moment in which someone did seem to be seated in Jacob's otherwise empty chair.)

But Locke's powers came through again, and he heard a mysterious voice say "help me." His power to hear that didn't please Ben, and the lead Other raised his gun and tried to add John Locke to the pile of Dharma bodies in a creepy mass grave. But this longtime viewer's not buying it. There's no way we've seen the last of John Locke yet.

locke is not dead. hes the best character in the show.WHEN WILL WE KNOW IF THE ISLAND IS A FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH??
Locke needs to die! He cannot be trusted and the island would be a better place without him. He has NOT been an intregal part of the story...so he has a connection, so did Echo and look what his fate was...I would rather have seen Ana Lucia around for longer than Locke. It was long in coming, and it is finally here. The mistake Ben made was not shooting him until he was finally dead. I jumped for joy at the thought of Locke being off the island. He is a traitor and manipulative. Must we forget what he did to Boone? Or how about forcing everyone to "press the button"? Or betraying his own to join the others? Good riddance and I strongly hope you are gone forever Locke!
Your 100% correct. Locke is too important to the show. Lost has a long way to go ... at least 3 more seasons. In the end it will be Locke vs. Ben! It matters not who was the first person on the island. Only who will be the last!!! And that will be????
I don't know, maybe leave us up in the air (like where exactly are Michael and Walt, I know it has only been a little over a week and half in their world) and I imagine if we have Rousseau discover him, she can care for him effectively (and I never followed her explanation very well, was she part of the Dharma Initiative? I know she has been here for sixteen years, but I couldn't tell how old Ben was supposed to be in relation to how old he is now). But seriously, okay, I was bothered by the dear departed Carivale part and then, so, what gothic tale are they taking from with the Hostiles/Real Others? It has to be at least thirty years from when young Ben met Richard and Richard now, are they ghosts, did they find out the cost for eternal youth was children's souls/life essences and that Jacob and Island are punishing them for that by not letting them have children (doesn't that sound familar) and maybe the longer the Losties go without trying to save their stolen children, the more the Island will make an example or prevent a pregnancy from taking place (this factors in Walt that maybe the Others thought he was their next leader because Ben got sick and is aging or maybe Jacob wanted him, like Management wanted Ben Hawkins, to take over his role). Okay, I really have to work
I was just searching for posts about last night's LOST and stumbled upon yours. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought it was eerily similar to the Carnivale plot. There were times I thought I was listening to the same argument Jonesy and Samson had.
I don't see how they are going to make three more seasons out of the show. It is one of my favorites, but come on....Maybe the last episode will have them being rescued and they go on a three hour tour...sound familiar?
I must agree that we have no yet seen the last of John Locke. In fact, I believe that the writers may have you believe he died for maybe even the rest of this season, but you can surly expect his character to resurface in a twist ending episode in Season 4. As stated in the article, Locke is "intimately linked to the island's powers." What other character is truly out for the truth - the same truth the viewer's seek? Jack most definitely is not. He plays as many games with his close friends as the others do with the group; though no thanks to Juliette's impending presence. Locke has seen the monster, and on more than one occasion. He seems to be the only one asking valid questions - Just what on Earth is going on here? Who are these people, what is this monster, what was the Dharma Initiative really up to before the Others wiped them out, and most importantly after this last episode, we applaud Locke for side-stepping Ben's quirky way of interjecting mystery by knocking out Mikhail to get to the ROOT questions at hand. Maybe John was getting to close to the truth for the writers, but with an ending in sight, 3 seasons away, I wouldn't write off Locke as dead just yet... again, who else is going to seek the REAL secrets of the island if not him?
I don't think Locke should die. The show needs him, and I don't believe he is dead. He will be back to save Jack, Kate and all the others on the beach. I still want to see Jack and Kate together as a couple. Her and Sawyer just don't cut it.
Of course Locke won't die the island healed him once I'm sure it will once again use it's magic!!!
No Way Locke is Dead. He is my Fav Charecter, He is the Life of the Island and in a way He is the only one who can solve the clues in the island. I think the Russian with One Eye is going to Save Him and stich him up :)
He's not dead.........
I agree that Locke isn't gone, he can't be. If I have noticed anything about this show its that, when people leave, they really don't leave, they always show up again. I predict we have not seen the last of Michael and Walt. This episode showed the viewers just how "dirty" Ben is.
When Ben comes back to camp after killing his father and he sees Richard taking off his mask, are any of the other "hostiles" in this scene still with the "others" and hasn't aged like Richard?
No way Locke is gone he will be back. He is one of the main that can't leave yet. He not dead.
We didn't get any warning about a possible island death like we have with all the other deaths that really mattered (and we're legal-issue related like Ana Lucia and what's-her-face.) Locke's not dead. I certainly wouldn't cry if he was as I've hated him ever since he hit Charlie, but he's not dead.
Locke's not dead; The 'sand' around the hut is actually ashes to hold Jacob in place (He's a spirit). The smoke thing and the statue of the foot w/ 4 toes hasn't been explained. I'm REALLY curious about that. Did Dharma know the statue was there? Who put it there? For what purpose? And why did it have 4 toes?
Every other person that has died on Lost has done so in an episode where there is a flashback about them. If next week's episode is Charlie-centric, expect him (Charlie) to go according to one of Desmond's visions.
Awesome episode! Can't wait until next week. I don't think Locke is gone because he is an integral part of the mystery surrounding the island. What it is? I don't know. I do know once it is uncovered, it will shock us all! HOWEVER, Jack's little attitude is like getting on my nerve! He needs to be taken down a peg or two me thinks! I love this show!
They are all in a mental hospital and the Flight survivors and Darma people are patients in the hospital and the Others are the doctors and staff. The Flight survivors are in group therapy and are being given mind altering drugs and put in scenarios with the other patients. Remember Hurley in the hospital office and the doctor was talking to him and the picture over Hurley's head was a picture of the "Island"!!!
"Jacob" is Locke...or a doppelganger, or a clone, or a twin, whatever you want to call it... but it's Locke.
It is just me or does Jacob's outline look like Jack's dad???
They are certainly not going to kill off Sun's baby's father...that's right folks, Locke is the father not Jin. It happened while Jin, Sawyer, & Michael were trying to raft to safety. Sun and Locke ...who da thunk it? It will be an amazing wednesday night when that storyline is revealed!
I hadn't really been able to make heads nor tails of where the storyline might be going, but, having read all of the previous posts, I most suspect that the Locke/Christ similarities might be the answer, when all is said & done. But, as for Jacob, and, Locke's being able to hear him, when Ben had claimed that Jacob only spoke to him---many of you feel like Jacob is somehow really Locke, with hair, and, possessed of great powers. What if Jacob IS Locke's alter-ego, somehow, that part of Locke that drives his quest for truth, answers? That, for Locke to be the whole man, that he strives for, at peace, he, somehow, is going to become the physical embodiment of the spirit-like Jacob? Maybe Jacob, in his need to be joined to Locke, has, as has been hinted at, numerous times, drawn them all to the island, and, manipulated events, such that Ben was doing Jacob's necessary physical work, in bringing into proximity the formerly-beaten & broken John Locke with his destiny? Someway, I believe that Jacob is going to inhabit the body of Locke, whether it be a resurrection (Christ-like), or, otherwise, rise again, and, vanquish Ben, and, those doing his bidding.
I thought Jacob could be a historic pirate from the original inhabitants (hostiles)...maybe Jacob Hendrikszoon Lucifer (googled). Three reasons: he abhor technology (remember no flashlights), the unexplained historic pirate ship on the island, and the screenshot figure looks pirate-like? I'm starting to think Richard was also an original pirate from the way he was dressed when young Ben met him in the jungle. John Locke's (from the philosopher's namesake) presence on the island is starting to make more sense as an allegory for the state of nature. The philosopher believed in 'natural' rights of individuals and societal governments should be limited and from the people and should not violate the moral rights of individuals. Thus Locke's character is hedging his allegiance to either camps until he can figure out which is worse; dictatorship from a clear leader (Ben, power, organization, control, planning) and democracy with no clear leader (camp, groupthink, hysteria, lack of guidance, dreams (desmond's)). Being shot by Ben and having his natural right violated (he did not commit a crime and was more an abuse of power), I think this will firmly push Locke back to the camp? Similarly, Rousseau’s presence also makes sense with the same philosopher analogy. She is withdrawn from any group and lives in isolation. She is the antithesis of Locke, preferring to live life as a neutral person and under her own general will as to avoid being corrupted by either society. The philosopher believed that persons were neither good nor bad but were tainted by society and their bad habits of social hierarchies.
Could the island be another dimension, a ripple in reality? Kind of like the bermuda triangle? remember Naomi said the ship couldn't see anthything and then the clouds parted and she saw it just as her helicopter died?
I think John is a transplant from the others playing with the Oceanic Flight. Do you think Locke is really Strange?
Locke must return. Locke in reality has been the focal point for every incident on the island. He is also the biggest threat to Ben since he has a connection with the Island. He is closer to unlocking the secrets that Ben is trying to keep from everyone. He is also linked to many of the castaways and would be central in bringing those connections to the front. He has already linked to Sawyer. He worked in the box company that Hurley owns. He did the appraisal on the house that Sayid's girlfriend bought. He has been heal from paralisys, a leg crush from the blast doors, the bite from his dad. As long as he doesn't anger the island he will survive. Rose is the only other one who understand the healing power of the island. Remember she told Locke that his leg would not take long to heal.
The last two episodes of LOST have been the best in three years! No, Locke is not dead. Terry O'Quinn is a master actor and his character John Locke is too strong, as well as central to the ever unfolding secrets the island holds. After a very poor second season, the writers and producers would be shooting themselves in the foot to kill off his character.
ok there is a book i picked up that was written in 1933 it is called lost horizon...reading the book is liking watching the show...everyone pick up a copy a barnes and noble...odd how the show and book match almost too much hmmm, now i wonder where the writers got the idea of lost...guess what if it follows the book locke isnt dead....and in the end they all relize this island was their redempetion...or second chance however you would like to think of it...
I think Locke will heal and go back to se Jacob. I think the powder around Jacob's house is some sort of binding circle or circle of protection in which Jacob is trapped, allowing Ben and Locke to step in. Locke will probably free Jacob not knowing fully what Jacob is or will do and then let Jacob run amok and Locke will be back to his quest for whatever he is looking for.
John Locke dead? Heck no. The writers will drag him back in when the show starts to drag again. The clever way to bring Locke back is to have him go off camera somewhere in the nether world of the island and give Jacob the help his asked for. Jacob then instills him with a few extra powers as a favor for his help. While he is gone he could coochy-up to Ben's mom and drive Ben mad for a while with a few of those "now you see me; now you don't" scenes with Locke snuggled up to his mom. Wellll...let's keep Locke in character. He's been helping everyone else; so, he might as well help those in the nether world for a while. Sure will be good, though, when the writers run out of flash-backs so that the show can move forward with it's own present-day action. Hey, why not sneak in some boogers from the nether world at John Locke's request to terrorize a few of the show's jackasses? Some viewers would love that. I would.
It's okay. I never really liked him anyway. Good riddance.
Jacob kind of looks like Christian, Jack's dad from the blurry image.
Locke isn't dead for now.... Usually when they kill off someone they do the flashback on them before they kill them. Last night's show was about Ben not Locke. We all know the island heals the wounded as Michail is still alive. Curious to see what happens next to Locke. Will Jacob show up to help him??
This episode was weird and I hope Locke is not dead otherwise I will no longer watch the show. He is the best and I think the show will not last more than one year, its getting way too much complicated with too many people. I hope Jack falls in love but not with Kate. I wish Sawyer and Kate would end up together because there both complicated people.
If Locke is dead, you can count me out as a viewer. I lost interest near the end of season 2, and Locke was the only character that brought me back to watch the show. The ratings will continue to tumble if he is indeed dead.
What if Locke's "magic" not only heals his own wound, but awakens the Dharma Initiative by reviving some decades old corpses? Ben would have some 'splainin' to do!
Pun intended, but Lost will be lost without Locke
Someone said that Jacob looks like Locke. Take a closer look: It's Dennis Hopper. He'll be great on the show.
No he is not . If Locke can gain his ability to walk again. Why whould'nt the "Island" heal him again. Locke is a fighter and I think in the next few episodes we will find that Ben will die. I also wonder if the "Island" is Purgatory? I mean look at it, the suvivors bodies were "found" according to the newest arival on the island. Ben's Mom was there, Jack's dad was there, and Ben's Mom said "It is not time"! What in the world does that mean?
LOST doesnt' work without Locke. If the producers don't realize that, then may the show be banned to "ER-like" existence. However, I think Locke will recover from the gunshot wound in mystical fashion.
If Locke is gone .... then so am I ... I love the show and watch every week, but its Locke that keeps me coming back
I think they're all in pergatory. They're all dead, and Jacob is the devil, or Richard Alpert is...or they're the all in the same. The island is in a battle between good & evil. The others want the children...they're keeping them as ammo...because they have no sin, the Devil can't take anyone without sin...they have no place on the island.
they cannot kill locke. there is no one better than him opposit Ben
Sherry...I'll bet you couldn't wait to tell every one that. I'll bet you hate kids too.
You guys like Hurley? He annoys the crap out of me.
Just a guess but the powder around Jacob's house looked like cremation ashes to me. In regards to Locke that character has had so much crap happen in his life off the island it would just be sad to see him go out like this. I really don't think it's the last we've seen of him.
No way is Locke dead. Throughout, they've mentioned the healing that occurs on the island - due to him. I think it is going to add to the oddity of the island - somehow, someway, he is going to walk away from this without a scar.
I think Locke is Jacob - Jacob is Locke, in the future. Whatever strange time slip exists on the island, that seems to only affect Desmond at the moment, will reveal itself soon enough. I think that's what allows Richard to remain ageless. Ben somehow manages to control the time slip.
I don't think that Locke is dead either. I think that the island or even Jacob will save him. There is no way that he can die now. There are to many unanswered questions and I think that Locke may be the answer to some of them. He is the only person that is truly connected to the island and its secrets.
