Has 'Lost' found itself?

If you're going to be vocal about the bad, you'd better be ready to speak up when things go well. I haven't been shy to say I've found "Lost" a bit of a turn-off this season, what with too much emphasis on unknown Others, Nikki and Paulo style characters turning up only to bite the dust, and so many of the original castaways left to do nothing but build sand castles on the beach. Last night's "Lost" episode turned things on its head, and in my mind, we're back now to the thrilling "Lost" that hooked me in the first season.

Charlie has never been one of my favorite characters, but his flashback -- really, numerous small flashbacks -- was one of the more engrossing ones of the season. As he faced possible death (did his brave underwater swim have anyone else remembering Shelley Winters in "The Poseidon Adventure"?), he decided to list his five favorite memories for sweetheart Claire. Viewers got to go back in time and see Charlie's favorite memories, and they were not only lively, but relevant.

He remembered Dad helping him overcome his fear of water, which was not only touching, but pertinent, as he prepared for a very scary swim. He remembered his brother and bandmate passing on a family heirloom. He remembered his pride at being called a hero for protecting a woman being mugged -- and, in true "Lost" fashion, the woman turned out to be Sayid's true love, Nadia. And he remembered his first night on the beach, introducing himself to a pregnant and lonely Claire. Even the non-romantic hearts in the audience had to say "aww" at that one. Sometimes on "Lost" the flashbacks slow things down, but not tonight.

The non-flashback parts of the show were all clicking, too. Who wouldn't root for a steely-eyed Rousseau stepping out of the jungle, prepared to share her knowledge of explosives with the castaways she'd once fought? And the idea of stocking tents with explosives when the Others expected pregnant women was both intriguing and exciting. Finally, the much-put-upon castaways, who've been caged, tortured, and made to eat fish pellets, might be getting their revenge.

Jack was back, Sayid was back, Desmond and Hurley all had decent-sized parts. We even saw those beloved lovers, Rose and Bernard, who fascinate old-time "Lost" watchers, but rarely get a line. There's another Dharma station, this time an underwater one, The Looking Glass. We learned how Rousseau's broadcast of more than a decade has been eternally blocked by the Others. There was even one of the famed "Lost" twists, when Charlie clobbered Desmond with an oar to ensure he got to at least attempt his sacrifice.

This was a "Lost" episode that satisfied on all accounts, and it only took them most of a season to get to it. With just the season finale remaining next week, I'm hoping that "Lost" is back on track for good.

LOST ROCKS! I love it and look forward to each weeks' episodes, but disappointed in Locke's doom, after everything he has been through and a main character at that......was shocked to see him get shot....sure hope someone will find him before it is too late....hope he will return and not be written out! Wish the season was not ending, I too, will have withdrawal over the summer mos!
The last few episodes have been wonderful. I've been an avid fan from the beginning, but was concerned about the beginning of the season having bland stories. The excitement started again with the Desmond back story and has been gaining momentum - I can't wait until Wednesday's finale. I'll bet it's going to be a doozy!
Lost hasn't gone off track or lost its steam. Everyone gets too caught up in wanting to know "the answers" and tend to not have the patience to keep up with Lost. This show is about much more than the mysteries, it's about the characters, and from the beginning there has never been a lack of character development or great acting. Last Wednesday's episode is a testament to that. You must stay with the show and enjoy it in order to get the full effect. It's an amazing show.
I thought the mugger was his bandmate.
I missed last weeks Blogs. What about Locke? Will he be back? He is the best actor on the show!
I was hooked on "Lost" from day 1. Sure, EVERY series, show, etc....gets into a down slide in story line so what's the trauma in "LOST" because it had a lull? Remember, in the very beginning, this series was a summer fill in but everyone loved it and the writers had a real task on their hands to keep writing with major mystery stories. I think everything and everybody made this show more than anyone could imagine. I will feel so sad when it is over when it comes to an end. Thank You, Pattie Brown
hey why hasn't the other called richard aged any from the time that he met ben in the woods looking for his mother?
i didn't care much for michael and was glad to see him go. it was so sad ifelt so hurt for hugo. when libby died. and then michael helped dig the grave. i wanted give him a shove into it. and cover it up.i hope they don't ever rewrite him on the show. because i don't ever feel he could make up for what he did to his friends.and he needs to remember karma
My family's watched this show since it started - pretty much faithfully. I was never able to sit down and watch an episode, probably because I came in at the middle, but the episodes that have been on these past few weeks got me hooked. It's a spectacular drama, with satisfying plot twists and all the character development people like me (who love watching characters change and develop) adore.
I'm sad that it's almost over...no new episodes until February! I hope that the network will show re-run episodes until then. From episode #1 would be great! There are so many small details and things that have happened that tie-in now that have been forgotten about!
Not only is "Lost" back but it is back with a vengance. I completely agree with your assessment that the show is back to its original glory. I believe the last 3 episodes may be the best 3 they have ever made. This occured just in time too, because I wa about to give up on the show. I await with grea anticipation the next episode.
A. Even without looking at Juliet's expression, it is obvious that Charlie was going to say whatever it took to get the chance to 'save' Claire (although since Desmond's flashes are not time stamped, I sense a red herring here by the writers, i.e. that Claire and Aaron will get picked up, but either it won't happen for another 47 episodes, or somehow the helicopter will crash after they get picked up - another EM surge maybe?) B. I looked back at the episode, and the actors for the mugger and the 2 girls in Charlie's bed were not the same as those that portrayed Boone or the Hatch Babes. Of course, these scenes may get reshot later with different actors if they writers like those ideas... C. I wondered why-not-just-cut-the-power-cable too. Maybe it is just a communication line back to Ben and not a power cable, since an underwater station would actually have many options for power that would not be dependent on a cable from the surface. D. But the biggest problem with the episode was the idea of radio jamming from underwater as mentioned above. This is ridiculous, and really represents laziness on the part of the writers, who have been called out for this sort of stupid mistake before and should have at least asked someone who took high school physics to review the script before filming. Pretty lame, but I am sure that they will write in a fix later on - like maybe Ben was lying about what the function of the Looking Glass really is (like was lying about it being flooded), and the radio jamming comes from somewhere else...like maybe Jacob? Certainly a creature presumably spawned by strong EM fluctuations would intrinsically be able to manipulate EM energy (like radio waves)? And a lonely creature wanting to bring people to live near it and then not wanting to let them leave would not exactly be a new idea in literature/entertainment, but it would certainly explain a lot. E. Building on that idea, my prediction for the season finale of Season 4 (next season) is this: the smoke monster has kept Locke alive and he supplants Ben as his mouthpiece/human intermediary after the smoke moster eats Ben for having pursued his own agenda and vendettas. Maybe for having imprisoned or hurt the smoke monster/Jacob: "Help me," and the fact that Ben did not seem really frightened when going to Jacob's shack (like he knew smokey was helpless and there was no real danger), and he was just trying to scare Locke.
I think the girls in the looking glass station are the women that Ben said died after getting pregnant on the island...thats just my guess tho
I thought the newest addition was great. I now want to go on with the show.
After the finale, no new Lost until February 2008. I am in withdrawal already.
I am a huge Charlie fan, and this episode was amazing. It touched my heart, made me choke up a little even though I was trying not to. A friend of mine watched it with me, a guy who had never seen or shown interest on Lost before, and he was blown away. I hope Charlie drowns but gets saved, that way, he will have "died" and Desmond's visions will finally stop. Lost held me in my seat that night, not as a commitment to the show as the earlier episodes had mostly been, but out of true excitement, intrigue, and heartbreak. It is back and with a vengeance.
The "cable" was not a power cable or communication line. If you look carefully at the schematics that Sayid was holding when discussing the station with Juliet, it is clearly labeled "anchor to island". So in essence, the writer's thought about the same thing (cutting power) and pre-empted it quite thoughtfully!
The story of Charlie's past and his future united to form one of the most outstanding episodes I have ever seen. I have enjoyed watching this show get better from one week to the next. Again, I watched the whole episode totally engaged. You just know the finale is going to be a masterpiece. Cant wait!!!
Can anyone tell me, Who is Jacob? and Ben was not the last born on the island, He was brought there by his father.
One facet that's so disturbing to me in recent episodes is how the Losties, even Sayid, continue to accept Juliet among them. I find her very troublesome and manipulative, don't buy her apparent switch in loyalty, and hope her demise is part of the finale. Did she really think The Looking Glass was unmanned (or unwomanned, apparently)? Or did she know there were people there, but wanted to divert volunteers from the upcoming battle on the beach?
Common people!!! Some of you saing that "Lost" been slow and boring this season, then why did you keep watching???? I think it has been catching and wanting-to-see-it-again all the time. I liked that this season has been a little bit more concentrated on romantic issues, and not more and more secrets, because head start spinning already from secrets which has not been revealed and instead adding more and more of them. I am so glad that we find out about a lot of secrets which were bugging us since the first season. And for sure everyone waits for Jack and Kate be together. Jack loves her!!!! I saw it in preview, he is telling her that....
I never gave much weight to the idea that the island is some kind of fountain of youth, but then I watched the recap episode on Thursday. One scene stuck with me: In one of Juliet's flashbacks, Richard shows here x-rays of an island woman's reproductive system. Juliet said they belong to a 70-year-old, Richard says the woman is in her 20s. This and the fact that Richard, apparently, doesn't age, made me think twice about the issue of Time on the island. Maybe it keeps you young (though maybe not your organs) or maybe it slows down time (for all we know, it's actually 5 years later off the island). The writers confirmed these people are alive, but only said they're somewhere in the "space-time continuem." Something's definitely going on here.
The Purgatory thing…. I was talking with a friend of mine over the weekend about the “are they in hell” theory. I mentioned the blogs I’ve read where it was stated the writers have said it isn’t hell. Well my friend, a catholic, reminded me that in Christian beliefs (not sure if all Christian faiths as I am not a Christian myself) that there is a difference between hell and purgatory. Purgatory is like a waiting room for “lost” souls. I’ve noticed that those who have “died” on the show have all some how redeemed themselves. I am thinking that they really don’t die (because they are already dead), just their souls move on. It doesn’t explain Ben’s existence, but there is still time for explanations. One other point in the Charlie/Clair story line….in the first season Clair visits a psychic who basically lies to her about an adoptive family for her baby in California just to get her on a plane that crashes. You got the sense that the child she was carrying was evil. Maybe Charlie needs to leave the island so that things play out as they need to with baby Aaron.
I think the best thing that can do for itself is end. Ever hear of "Twin Peaks"? My fear is that they are going to get cancelled mid-way through a season & then have to cram an ending into some 2-hour made-for-tv movie. Go out on top guys, and let us have some fond memories!
Everyone, just because Charlie said "he doesn't swim", doesn't mean he can't. There is a difference. (I can run, but I don't run!)Just a personal preference not to.
People, please. This isn't Law & Order: SUVanilla! The people making this show are incredibly responsible about crafting their story, and they're in no particular rush to reveal everything. The whole point of discovering what's going on on this island hinges on the "unknown Others" - you should be cheering that we've spent so much time this year finding out about them. And that Nikki and Paulo episode was tour-de-force brilliant, esp. with the circus of dead-people cameos. Hitchcock himself woulda been proud. The last 2 eps were HUGE, but also the way things have been revealed the entire season was terrific. Blame the network for the st00pid split-season experiment; that wasn't the show creators.
Some people have a hard time understanding that characters can and do lie on a TV show. Just because Charlie said that he couldn't swim in season 1 doesn't mean that he doesn't know how. He was a self involved drug addict then and wasn't willing to risk his life, now he has changed and is willing to risk himself for those that he loves, namely claire and the baby. Also, he was lying when he said that he was a swim champ. If you pay attention in the episode they reveal this without spelling it out for the viewers. Also, I don't think that the cable on the beach is a power cord. First, I don't think that a little cable like that would be sufficient to power the entire station. My xbox 360 has a bigger power cord! I've heard that it might be there to tether the station to the island, maybe it's there so that the others can find the station, or maybe it pumps air into the station. Maybe we will find out what it's for at a later date but I'm sure that the writers wouldn't let an oversight like that happen!
I must be the only viewer who has never complained about anything to do with this show. Lost is pure entertainment it is like reading a great book one chapter a week then taking a break and coming back to read more. I am always disappointed how fast time flies when I am watching it. Great story telling and twists and turns, I do like the shorter flashbacks that have something to do with the current thread and adds to it. I am going to be waiting for next February for sure but baseball and football is there to occupy my time till then. Can't wait for the finale this season and the DVD's. Best show on TV besides the Sopranos
ok, i have a feeling something ties back to the RING that charlie left behind, seems when he has it on, something happens to him, but when he left without it, so far that is, it doesnt appear any of desmonds prenomanations happen, just a theory, hopefully the finales helps out with a few questions revealed.
Even with all of the scheduling and time changes I am still a huge fan of Lost; this season especially! The writers have done a great job taking its viewers on a mystery trip, filled with LOADS of puzzling storylines. One puzzle piece I may have missed...who was the girl Charlie helped from getting mugged in the alley? To me and my Lost Wednesday crew, she didn't look familiar at all.
For some reason no one seem to answer questions on this blog....The girl in the that Charlie rescues in the alley is Nadia. Nadia is Sayid”s old “girl friend” or at least the girl he is looking for, also the reason he was on the plane. ALL the people on the plane are some how connected, this is a main plot line.
remember people who die on the island do not stay dead! Jack's dad was not in the coffin, but Jack saw him in the jungle. People heal on the island, rapidly in fact. I do not think Locke should be under estimated again!!
Exactly how many times do the writers/creator have to say that the castaways are NOT dead and are NOT in purgatory before you people will let go of that theory???
I'm sick of Charlie, let him die already. I wonder why Jack seems to protect Julie? She's up to no good. I hope Locke doesn't die, I love his character. What happened to Michael & Walt? The invisible Jacob, was silly.
I wonder if some of the viewers of Lost are seeing it on other mediums, ITunes, Abc.Com, waiting for DVD, they're just not watching it at 10pm when the Nielsen's count who's watching. Also, I think the whole Lost was on a downturn this season, was mostly an entertainment-media driven story. The tv critics sing the praises the first season, build the hype the second season, so that they can trash it in the third season. It's the whole rise and fall thing. How many articles did I read in the press about how Lost was slipping this year? It's like all the tv critics got a press release, "LOST isn't as good this year."
I LOVE LOST! I didn't discover LOST until May, 2005, when they began rerunning Sesaon 1, but I have been HOOKED ever since! I can't count the times my jaw has dropped this season and I can hardly wait for 2 hours of my favorite show from 8-10 tonight plus whatever they are teasing us about in a "special" at 7. I agree that the split season thing was a real drag and making us wait til February to start Season 4 is aggravating to say the least. My favorite characters right now are bad boy Sawyer and Hurley, the ping pong champ, but that is subject to change! They have to bring Locke back because of the whole deal between him and Ben. I can't wait for Danielle to get her first look at her daughter, Alex. The women in The Looking Glass are not the women in bed with Charlie, but I like the idea from V. Dumont that they may be women who became pregnant on the island but women whom Ben says died. Interesting theory.
I just hope ABC moves Lost back to 8 or at least 9 PM when it returns next year so I can watch it the night it airs instead of having to record it or watch it online a day or more later. I guess network folks don't have to get up early to go to work.
I am tired of the "lost" is back crap, it had never left, and has been full throttle since it returned in Feb.
"One of Us" was the one that really did it for me
I have a strange feeling that yes Penny did send a ship looking for Desmond....BUT I also believe that that ship has found Walt and Micheal so therefore they kept looking. But is the lady that 'fell from the sky' really good or bad? I also believe that Locke will come back because remember that people on the island or whereever it is they are they heal extreamly fast, so YES locke will return. But who's side will he actually be on? And I think that 'Ben's daughter' now knows that she is not his daughter and Russo will make a huge effort in the finale to let her know who she really is! One thing I love about this show is you never know who to trust! Everyone has skeletons in their closets and there seems to be alot of closets on this 'island'. I also believe that this 'Jacob Ghost' is being held there by Ben. Because if you remember the voodoo type sulfer around the shack is what is keeping Jacob in there. So there is something that Ben of course has a secret about. And I recommend HIGHLY that if you have Tivo or a DVR from cableone record lost and replay the previews slowly because you see alot more that you would just watching it regularly. These producers a brilliant and they have my loyalty for this season and all of the seasons to come.
I am a bit curious about the aging thing too...Ben aged, but Richard hasn't? I also liked what someone else posted about Charlie dying but then being revived so that Desmond can stop having his premonitions...good plot line. I love this show!!! This season has brought in a lot of little ties that you had to pay attention to get but that made the story even better...like the link between Claire & Jack, Jack & Shannon...I love all the little "connections" they all have without even realizing it!! GREAT SHOW
In Season 2, "Live Together Die Alone part 2, Michael was told by Ben "Follow a compass heading of 325 exactly, and if you do that, you and your son will find find rescue." The small boat they are on does not have much range. Either Ben sent them to the middle of nowhere to die from exposure or more likely he sent them to a "waypoint" where the submarine was Routinely dispatched from. Ben would not allow Michael and Walt to expose anything to the outside world.
Charlie didn't drown in this last episode, as Desmond predicted, but that doesn't mean he won't -- he hasn't pushed any blinking yellow light yet! But he also might just not die -- Desmond has averted Charlie's death in all his other visions, maybe something will interfere here, too. I don't think LOST is predictable at all! And I love it!
Isn't the blond girl who pulled the gun on Charlie last week the same girl who was on the boat when the Others kidnapped Walt? I think she tossed a grenade on the raft, but don't remember for sure... As for Walt, I'd love to see him back, but how will the writers explain the fact that the actor has aged 3 years in about 2 months' time? One idea that's occurred to me is that, during the "tests" Walt told Michael were done on him, the Others could have given him growth hormone or something. True, I have no idea why they would do that... Still, it would solve the problem of Walt's now being a teenager! I also really want to know why Richard hasn't aged, yet Alex was born on the island, went through childhood (we've seen photos of her as a young girl in Ben's house), and is now a teenager.
1.) Lost is awewsome Ive been watching since season1 2.) Micheal And Walt need to come back 3.) Is it that people dont die on the island or is it that people dont sustain injuries? Why did Ben have a tumor if people dont seem to get sick? 4.) If I was one of the castaways I wouldnt trust Juliet at all and i might be a liitle skeptical of Jack. 5.) I dont want Charlie to die. 6.) I wish that somehow Jack and Clair realize that they're related. 7.) I'm waiting for a Richard-centric episode or a Russo-centric episode. Those episodes will tell alot.
im known as having a heart of ice, my friends say im quite uncompassionate, but thats the allure of me. however this weeks lost episode made me cry. and i haven't cried over a show or movie...ever. tonight had such tender moments. when charlie left the ring in aarons crib...very cute. but when he realized that he had to do it to save claire and the baby...when it really truly hit him. it was over. i was crying. and then when he wrote that his number one memory of his life was meeting her...that was something. call me a hopeless romantic. call me a pmsing girl, i am neither. this was lost at its finest hour.
I just watched the last episode and I think the plot is getting closer to my original idea...They are in an alternate dimension. They should not have left the island because "they don't belong in that dimension
Redemption! Vindication! Redemption for the show's writers, vindication for those of us who stuck with the show when it seemed to be losing itself. Possibly the best season finale in TV history. I was particularly pleased to be 'deceived' by the flashback which turned to be a flashfoward that seemed to justify the weirdly concordant admonitions of Ben and John Locke. Excellent!
Lost is on my weekly schedule; I make sure I am home and phones turned off! I never heard about ratings dropping but that has got to be an error; something like the recounting of the polls (woops).
IF the lost creators are reading: BRING CHARLIE BACK!! I'm gonna miss him!! Also, a friend said that Jacob might be Ben's alter-ego. Maybe his "other" personality. I think I can see that....
