'Housewives' wraps season with juicy finale

Spoilers for "Desperate Housewives" finale lurking ahead. Consider yourself warned.

"Desperate Housewives" wrapped its third season up with an old-fashioned, juicy, pull out all the stops finale Sunday night, and fans who weren't so sure about recent episodes finally received their reward. This show was up there with a good old "Dallas" episode -- two weddings, a fake baby, a suicide, and a wrenching toxic mom/cancer subplot. The results were electrifying, leaving fans with plenty to chew over as they wait all summer for the show to return. This episode finally was a return to the soapy drama of season one, and it was about time.

Start with the biggest plot twist, the one the writers appropriately saved for the end. If you saw that one coming, you're more of a psychic than most. Edie was hiding the fact that she was taking birth control pills, despite knowing that Carlos desperately wanted a child. He found out just before the emotional experience of attending Gaby's wedding reception, and perhaps that pushed him to tell Edie it was over between them. Instead of the usual "Housewives" back and forth of forgiving and forgetting and breaking up and getting back together, Edie went home, wrote a note to Carlos, and apparently hung herself.

Not only was the apparent death stunning (is there any chance Carlos could find her in time?), it reached back to the series pilot, in which another housewife, Mary Alice Young, killed herself. And while we didn't know Mary Alice when she killed herself, viewers have come to know Edie. She's often been the comic relief, the entertaining blonde who never received enough lines of her own. She's come into her own lately, and to see this often wise-cracking woman brought to the ultimate despair was all the more horrifying because viewers knew her so well.

Edie's trouble was just one of the plot lines that will keep viewers chatting. Bree returned, as Marcia Cross made an appearance after taking time off to give birth to twins. Yet she shocked her friends by showing up with an apparent pregnancy of her own. Smart viewers knew right away that it was a pregnancy pad, and Bree was faking her pregnancy so that when unwed daughter Danielle has her baby, Bree can pass the child off as her own, but watching the deception was enthralling.

And what would a soap opera finale be without a wedding? "Housewives" offered up two: An elaborate, well-attended ceremony for Gaby and Victor, and an intimate, moonlight wedding for Susan and Mike. Both weddings advanced their respective plots as well. Gaby discovered that Victor was probably using her to court the Latino vote in a planned race for governor, while Susan, for once, saw one of her crazy schemes turn out even better than she planned. She surprised Mike with a secret wedding, and it was every bit as beautiful and meaningful as her elaborate bridezilla ceremony would have been wrong.

As for the other housewife, Lynette's plot may not be as headline-grabbing, but it was doubly wrenching. The mom of four (plus Kayla) does indeed have Hodgkin's lymphoma, and who should show up but her bossy mother, Stella? Stella's had her own cancer bout in the past, as well as her own experience with infidelity, and she was quick to throw both in Lynette's face once Kayla spilled the beans about Chef Rick. Lynette ordered her mother out, but her mother cowed her with a depressingly realistic speech about how the cancer would wipe her out, and she would could either fight her mother, or the disease.

"Desperate Housewives" lost a lot of viewers with the second season's Applewhite murder plot, but if those viewers returned to give season three a shot, they were rewarded handsomely with the drama of Sunday's finale. How long till the show returns in September?

I still miss Gaby's boy toy gardener. He was so hot! They show Carlos without his shirt, but he doesn't exactly have a manly chest. I am thinking the man-bra. Mike looks skinny, not as muscular as could be for a blue-collar guy. Except for Gaby's gay pal, the show seems to be losing its gay subtext. How about a boyfriend for Andrew?
C'mon, this is Desperate Housewives. Edie is just fine. There are several reasons to believe that if someone is actually successful in bumping themselves off, it will turn out to be Gaby. We've had three years to learn that the writers of this show use more misdirection than Siegfried and Roy.
Could it be Bree's daughter who might have hanged herself?
Oh god was tonight amazing!!! Thank God Maria Cross was back!
What about the kiss between Gaby and Carlos? Is Victor going to walk in or his dad?
Do we know for sure it was Edie who wrote the note and hung herself? Maybe it was Gaby, earlier in the season the network said she was coming back as a ghost cuz Eva wants to go into movies.
Desperate G-Wow you missed the scene completely! It showed Edie wearing the scarf before it showed the hanging. It was Edie. IO just hope Gabby gives Victor & his father a major reckoning!
When the show returns Gaby will have enolled her wedding to victor to return home, and the shocker carlos would probably be there, after he will be visiting eddie back and forth from the icu care, since he would have found her in time, HMMM do you think???
Do we know for sure it was Edie who wrote the note and hung herself? Maybe it was Gaby, earlier in the season the network said she was coming back as a ghost cuz Eva wants to go into movies.
LOVE the logic that it could be Danielle who has hanged herself, Desperate G! All morning I've been - like - "But Nicolette isn't leaving the show! How could that be a cliffhanger?!?" Huh! Good thinkin'!
Wouldn't it be interesting (and a hoot!) if the father of Danielle's baby were a minority and it's apparent in the baby? What would Bree come up with for that?
What Edie's actions tell us is that we didn't know her at all. Oftentimes, people who act like they don't care about anything are the ones who care most deeply. We saw peeks of that here and there (e.g. her desire to be included in the poker games despite seemingly disliking the other women), but nothing that indicated just how truly - yes, desperate - Edie really was. Clearly, there's a lot more backstory we're missing.
Being a Latina myself, it was insulting to hear Victor's political friend tell him in reference to Gaby that having a Latina wife was to his advantage and would help to increase votes from the Latino community. I was not surprised about this part because it is literally true in real life. Some White males who marry Latinas have this perception that we are stupid. All I can say is "ladies show them who the real stupid ones are."
I am finally glad that Susan and Mike got married. The one to feel bad for is Gaby.......... after overhearing the conversation between Victor and his father!
My question after Gaby's wedding...did she only kiss Carlos to get revenge from Victor, or did it go any further???
Fabulous season finale. The best season finale i've seen this year. Loved all the plots and all the storylines and will be counting down the days this summer. DH is back to being my favorite show thanks to the finale.
What if Danielle gives birth to an interracial baby? How would Bree explain that to everyone????
okay i don't even understand the last comment as bree's daughter was not the one who they showed hanging themselves, but Edie. I think Edie could be dead. After thinking about it, where would her character go next? She's already had Karl, Mike, now Carlos, her son made an appearance, her nephew brought forth conflict in two other households - her death would be an excuse to bring Austin back for a funeral. And I think that the opening with her mother was a strong foreshadowing. DH had to shake it up and kill off a more 'lead' character sooner or later...my question is, where did Zach & Paul Young disappear to? Gaby didn't want Zach and now he's just, gone? And is Felicia ever going to come back? I did enjoy the finale, though. They're getting back to their roots - it will be interesting next season with all the housewives (except Susan) hiding secrets from each other.
FINALLY, Mike and Susan are husband and wife. This in and of itself is enough to keep this "desperate housewife fan" waiting with baited breath for next season! LOVE THOSE HOUSEWIVES!!!
The scenes of Edie hanging herself were clearly in her house as they showed the photo of her Mother on the bedside table in the background. So unless another character decided to hang themselves in Edie's bedroom, this was definitely Edie. But if they don't want her off the show, the rope will break or someone will show up and save her
Um, obviously it was Edie that hanged herself. I think that Carlos will find her in the next season premiere, rush her to the hospital and everything will be fine. I CAN'T WAIT to see what Gaby does to Victor next season. She is going to get some serious revenge!! It's going to be good! Too bad we have to wait 4 months!
I think the whole Gaby and Carlos thing will end up with a pregnancy for them and a "Whose the Daddy" storyline. He really wants a kid and her new husband is a jerk. It could make for some funny and deep scenes. I am sure Edie will be saved by someone or the scarf will break or something. I would like to see Gaby and Carlos back together and maybe someone new for Edie (like a doctor who helps her with her issues after a suicide attempt or maybe the ex-husband who has Trevor). Greg Evigan is still hot. Anyway, I cannot wait until the fall to see what happens.
Only DH writers could let strings of such importance till when? Next season? One of three shows I definately watch. A long summer ahead to dwell on the thoughts of my shows.
I think that it was Edie that hung herself, although she will probably be rescued in time since I hadn't heard any rumours about Nicolette leaving the show. I think it would be great if Gabby turns up pregnant at the start of next season and we don't know if the father is Victor or Carlos.
I think that Gaby and Carlos will begin an affair!!
I hope Gaby and Carlos "did it" and she gets pregnant... she can ditch the rotten Victor and get back with Carlos. They are meant to be together.
The father of Danielle's baby is Austin, Bree's nephew. So, Bree won't have to worry about an interracial child.
My kids laugh at me when i tell them that i have to get home to watch D housewives. I am 49 male, and i think its the best show on TV. Please spare Eddie.
Excellent finale. The scene with Edie's feet dangling was a little too graphic for me, though. I had nightmares!
Hip hip hooray...susan and mike are married.....and Edie...well...it could be an interesting twist to having her dead....2 "ghosts"...mary alice and edie...hmmmm...i like it.....and it will bring austin back...and danielle could very easily be pregnant w/the matthew applewhite's baby....she was sleeping w/him before it was discovered he was a murderer.....ah yes...the plot thickens cuz bree is "pregnant"...how will they explain that one?....but it could be austin's child and then later have it discovered the baby is sick and needs blood....waalaa...truth will come out as to it not being bree's but danielle's and by the time all this happens austin will have been reunited w/julie and thus another cliffhanger...........yoy....i watch to much TV....heehee! i love the show...have laways thought gabie and carlos needed to be reunited...edie can haunt their relationship.......but whatever the plot i'm glad the show has returned becuz i had lost interest in it....but now i'm hooked "again~
I think when DSH return Gaby is going to be pregnant by Carlos.....
I too think that Carlos will find Edie in time. She will be alright. He will forgive her and they will conceive a child together. Gabby will then find out she is preggers too. We will find out that Gaby & Carlos didn't just kiss at her wedding and that of course will lead to Carlos possibly having two babies that are his.
Scarves are not very strong, I don't think it will hold Edie very long- it will break and she will live. Gaby will annull her marriage to Victor and she and Carlos will be together again. Danielle will have a baby of another descent and that will leave Bree to tell the truth about her slutty daughter and fake pregnancy! Lynette will fight the cancer and win and her and her mom will become as close as ever. Those are my predictions for the 2007-2008 season opener.
We need some color on the show. Fine the Applewhites are gone. But we need some color. C'mon now.
My girlfriend and I talked for an hour after the show. It was full of good stuff! We loved it and can't wait till the seasonal opener. Thanks to the writers for a fabulous cliffhanger and for letting Susan be happy at last.
I'm a huge fan of D.H.,I was so happy when Marcia Cross returened she is my favorite charactor. I think Eddie did kill her self, because I heard it from a big shot in Seattle,WA that a main charactor was going to die I'm so glad it was Eddie she caused to much drama! I think Gabby will divorce Victor and go back to Carlos, but there's going to be NO! Eddie! I repeat Eddie is Finish!!
Nicolette Sheridan and Michael Bolton are moving out of Hollywood into a country home somewhere in the south, so she is not expected to be back for next season.
The father of Bree's daughter's baby is Edie's nephew, same guy who Susan's daughter was seeing. It was Edie who hung herself but is the scarf strong enough to hold her or will it break? guess we have to wait for the long summer to be over before we can find out next season. can't wait!
I used to dispise Nicolette Sheridan on "Knot's Landing." Now, years later, I love her on DH. I hope Edie isn't gone. She is/was comic relief. If she is, Carlos will probably blame himself and be crushed. He'll realize what Gabby means to him..and fight for her. Gabby...hee hee..payback is a well...Gabby. She'll get Victor where it counts..in the ballot box. Great season finale...can't wait for next season
I'm sure it was Eddy. She was wearing a pinkish/peachish robe in her final scene and it's the same robe that they showed hanging w/the feet. Besides, Gabby isn't weak & insecure enough to kill herself. She's way to spunky and ready to get back at Victor.
Agreed, Gaby will get revenge!!! Also I'm pretty sure Danielle's baby was with Edie's nephew so most likely it won't be biracial.
How about this - Carlos finds Edie, rushes her to the hospital and they find out that she's pregnant despite the birth control pills! They're not 100% effective you know! Of course she'd have to lose the baby for Gaby and Carlos to get back together. Now if Edie's nephew comes back to help his Aunt and he gets Julie pregnant (is he also the father of Danielle's baby?) and if Susan get's pregnant, WOW!
ok well I have been paying VERY close attention and in an interview with Eva she said that her and Carlos will end up getting back together. SO Edie is gone and Gaby will be divorcing that jerk Victor. Hopefully not before she puts him through hell. ha ha
here is my take on the plot of Edie hanging herself.... The scarf will break, Carlos will find her and rush her to the hospital. The doctor will tell him, that she and the baby will be fine. Carlos is estastic! Apparently the older the woman becomes, the pill becomes less effective, hence she is pregnant from him putting her upside down after you know what!
Ok best finale every! I hope that Edie doesnt die and they dig into her past a little bit more. I don't want Gaby and Carlos to get back together. Carlos should find Edie help her and realize how much he loves her! But thats just what I want. Can't wait for the next season!
If Edie really is dead, then Carlos & Gabi could raise Edie's son - this would make sense, as Carlos really likes him and that both Carlos & Gabi wanted a child together...maybe the note that Edie left for Carlos says that she wants him to take care of her son?!
I'm betting Gaby & Carlos did go further and next season he'll have that baby he wanted so badly, only the mayor will be forced to raise it as his own.
I think Gaby is going to be pregnant with Carlos baby. But that is an interesting thought about who it really was hanging there. What is curious to me is the scarf went flying in the wind. I also love that Mike & Susan are finally together.
Obviously the people who think that Danielle's baby is biracial are not paying attention to the show. We all know that the father of the baby is Edie's nephew, Austin. Danielle and Austin were having sex while he was dating Susan's daughter, Julie. That is why Julie and Austin broke up.
I think Gaby & Carlos' post-wedding tryst will result in a baby. Gaby will keep it secret from Victor until the baby comes and is obviously not Victor's child. Then Victor will have Carlos bumped off leaving Gaby to try to leave but not be able to because Victor is mob-ish and now running for Governor. Susan and Mike will be happy for a while (since THAT is such a plot twist!). Bree will try to pass off the grandbaby as her baby but Danielle will cause trouble and have to be sent away for good to keep Bree's secret going. I think Edie is dead and her funeral will bring back old/new characters. Tom & Linette will become closer due to the cancer while the old-witch mom will be their nemisis. Kayla is a little witch in training who will also work to undermine Linette...maybe she will run away or something!
