'American Idol' isn't dead yet (REVEALS 2007 WINNER)

It's been a while since the "American Idol" announcement made on finale night was really a surprise. Maybe when Ruben beat Clay -- that infamous decision is still argued among the diehard Claymates out there. But it was pretty clear in years past that Fantasia was going to defeat Diana, Carrie and her little bit country would beat Bo and his little bit rock and roll, and that Taylor Hicks was riding a wave of goofy, grey-haired personality to beat Katharine McPhee.

This year was no different. Almost everyone who cared to hazard a guess was picking young Jordin Sparks, she of the powerhouse vocals, to defeat Seattle beatboxer Blake Lewis. And almost everyone was right: At just 17, Sparks was crowned the 2007 champion of this reality show that still captivates the nation.

"Idol" has been criticized for everything from a lack of clarity about the voting system to the stupid, apparently scripted jokes between host Ryan Seacrest and judge Simon Cowell. Some viewers claim that Ryan is too rude, and others say Simon is a big ol' meanie, apparently wanting all the judges to all play the Paula role and deliver nothing but meaningless platitudes. Viewership is down this sixth season, sliding to levels the show last saw in seasons three and four.

And of course, every season, fans complain that "because Melinda/Chris Daughtry/Stephanie/etc got kicked off so early," or "because Sanjaya/Hayley/Kevin Covais stayed so long," that they'll never watch again. And maybe they don't, but the show is going to have to come a long way before it really feels those losses. The show still pulls in everyone from senior citizens to young preteens with their parents It's still the Mount Everest of American TV shows, so unavoidable a colossus that other networks plan their TV seasons to shield their important shows from the "Idol" timeslot.

A couple seasons ago, "Idol" was consistently under fire for weird happenings with the voting. MSNBC.com regularly received mail from viewers who claimed they called in to vote for one singer and heard a recorded message thanking them for voting for someone different. The show's editors got lazy, too, and a couple of times, the wrong phone numbers appeared on the screen. Shrieks that "the fix is in!" were heard from coast to coast. Viewers still grumble about how ridiculous it is that "Idol" isn't more open about the vote totals -- how close the show is from week to week, and how many calls the winner actually wins by.

"Idol" is unlikely to change. For one thing, if it revealed those numbers, and Blake was trailing Jordin last week by some huge number of votes, you're fooling yourself if you think it wouldn't affect the next week's votes. Blake's fans would be galvanized and Jordin's fans might get complacent, and this season's outcome might have been forever altered.

But most of all, "Idol" won't change because it doesn't have to. When you're that far above the other shows in the ratings race, you can get lazy if you want. When the ratings numbers come in for Jordin's coronation, they'll be unbeatable. As was she.

On "Survivor," every season the contestants remind themselves constantly that it's just a game. "Idol" is a game, too -- part singing competition, part popularity contest, part magic and luck and random chance. Like many "Survivors" in the past, Jordin hung back a little, letting Melinda and LaKisha, not to mention Sanjaya, take much of the early attention. But she never was less than stellar, and she played the game with all the charm and vocal chops of a woman twice her age. Future "Idols" can learn a lot from the young girl with the great big voice.

I was sad. I thought Blake should have won!!!
Worst seanson by far. Melinda was robbed.Show was fixed.
I'm glad Jordin won over Blake, but Melinda is still the one. It seemed like the cameras avoided zeroing in on Melinda a lot....maybe it was the producers instructing them to do that? Why? She was one of the best that's EVER been on American Idol folks! To the judges.....be very, very careful who you pick for next year!!!!!!!
How silly to accuse AI of vote tampering! Ever since the game show "fixes" of TV and congressional investigations thereof, TV shows have been reminded to verify results, and tabulations before an independent auditor. AI certainly is no exception. And do you REALLY think that juggernault like FremantleMedia who owns the "Idol" trademark all over the world, would even RISK any kind of irregularity? Not hardly, especially considering the bazillions of dollars they get from their sponsors. So lets quit the irresponsible media writings and FUD regarding the show. You dont like the results or your favorite doesnt advance, then you can either be a baby and take your toys and go home, or stay tuned, enjoy the banter, and have fun with it. This ISNT life or death people... its JUST a TV show :)
Yeah for Jordin But that was a very lame finale.
I'm not sure why no one has caught on to the trend. AI crowns a different sex each season. Last season a guy won, so, as is tradition, the girl won this season. And a guy will win next season, etc etc. Voting doesn't do much but pad someone's pocket with a lot of green. Voting is a waste of time.
Yahoo! Miss Jordin is the new American Idol! She has an incredible career ahead of her as does Melinda Dolittle.
You stated there was a problem with viewer of Idol but I think the problem is that Time Warner Cable has been unable to negociate a contract with Fox and we were blacked out and unable to view. Maybe they should look into that as a reason viewership is down.
What a disappointing season!!! THE JUDGES votes need to be included just like "Dancing". This is why A.I. will continue to lose viewers. WHY DO YOU HAVE JUDGES IF THEIR OPINION DOESN'T COUNT?At least "Dancing" is fair to the real talent. Viewers are NOT music producers. Jordin? Blake? Taylor? People have too much power (teenagers who are text-message fiends) and votes should be limited.74 million votes and 24 million viewers??? Something is amiss.People like Melinda who were ROBBED of the finale would have a fair chance if the judges who have been working in music for YEARS had input into final selection. What's the point? Jordin will self-destruct. The likes of Lindsey, Paris and ESPECIALLY Britney Spears all had fames as teenagers and now look at them. Complete messes!!! Told from the time they were 16 or 17 that they could do no wrong. Jordin will probably be no different. Her parents are probably thrilled as she is a minor and they control all her money. Lucky mom and dad.
Honestly, I thought Blake should've won, but it really doesn't matter. I'm sure that he, like Jordin, already had a nice record contract signed and ready WAY before this finale.
I think the judges have gotten stale and need to be replaced. That could breathe a bit of fresh air into what is a somewhat standard response from them to all the contestants.
I watch AI because my wife does, and we have one TV. The one thing that keeps popping into my head is that Mick Jagger, Robert Plant or Freddy Mercury would not have won. What does that mean?
This season was good, I don't think the best singer won though. Melinda!!! However that two hour finale has got to go!!! What a waste of time. Even if they kept all the performances it should be cut down to one hour. Those awards are ridiculous, who wants to see those fools who only wanted to get on tv in the first place. Haven't we suffered enough when we saw their auditions and the ridiculous amount of attention they already got??
How many votes did top two get?
The last three contestants were the most talented. I felt Melinda went home too soon. Jordan and Melinda should have been the last two. It is after all a singing competition. Blake however will have an outstanding career because of his talent and uniqueness. Sanjaya did stay on the program way too long!
I didn't enjoy the finale so much this year because of the time slotted to special guests and just too long. The last two contestants of Idol should have had the limelight more. Found it to be too drawn out! Got restless and a little bored watching everyone else. Sorry but I thought you needed to know.
I Was Shocked To See that Melinda Doolittle Was Voted Off She Was So Good I Think That Was A Mistake, Jordin Came Along Way And Doing Better But Melinda Was The Best Out Of The Girls.
Actually, in seasons three and four, females one back to back
So we get posts and subsequent discussions on the 2nd and 3rd to last episodes of "Lost" but not one on the season finale, which was, in many ways, a groundbreaking episode? Yet two posts on the crapfest that is "AI"? Ouch.
The show is sinking quickly. I know that AI can't get rid of Simon, but Randy and Paula should go... in favor of judges who sing in the industry. Also the judges weekly scoring should count as 50% of the total. The current format is little more than a popularity contest, rather than a talent contest.
I watched perhaps 1 hour total of American Idol this season (a song or two every couple of weeks). I had picked Jordin to win at the final 12. She was in the top 3 vocally, and was more attractive than the only 2 who could outsing her. It does make a difference. To S Harlow: Girl, Boy, Girl, Girl, Boy, Girl... Your theory doesn't hold. My predictions: No contestant from this season will see the success of Kelly Clarkson or Carrie Underwood. Jordin will do well with her debut (better than Taylor, or Ruben anyway). She will have the best career of this year's contestants. Blake might actually outsell Jordin for a debut, but a sophomore effort will fall flat. Melinda will have a long, though mostly unheralded, career. Unless you follow R&B/Soul charts, her name will be an AI footnote, until you read the song credits for a Disney film in 5-10 years. Lakisha will have a respectable (300,000 or so) debut R&B album, but will never repeat that success. She will be able to have a continuing musical career, but will more likely withdraw from the industry in a few years. American Idol will be a good story for the grandkids.
After this boring season and uneventful finale, AI is going to need to make some dramatic changes to arouse viewer interest again next year. What would be more fun than voting for the contestant you hate most to get booted off the show? Much more fun than voting for who you like.
I have to agree that this last year has not been as good as the previous but that does not mean next year will be like that again. I love the concept of helping decide who should be up there. Keep it coming, i will watch Idol and drive my husband crazy.
Patrick from Minneapolis: Check the post directly above this one for a "Lost" finale post.
S Harlow should get the facts right. It has not been alternating girl/guy. Carrie Underwood followed Fantasia.
America’s teenage population must have overwhelming voted for Jordin Sparks and that made her the youngest winner of the American Idol. American Idol is a glorified Karaoke contest watched by millions of people in America and other parts of the world. My favorite to win it was Melinda Doolittle and she was actually the best singer in the finals. But Jordin at 17 has turned out to be the choice of the majority of voters as she beat Blake Lewis in the finale. The sponsors wanted em young, pretty and sexy enough to woo the gullible consumers.
As the author of the article states, the show isn't dead yet ... but it's going to be if some changes aren't made next season. I have been a die-hard fan from day one, and it's one of the only TV shows that I watch on a regular basis. I do not want to see it go down, but, I worry about the arrogance of the producers by not listening to what the fans are saying. I agree totally about replacing the judges. I am sick of Randy and Paula as all they do is say the same things over and over. I don't even need to have the volume on to know what they will say. Simon at least surprises now and then with some original comments. Getting new judges would be a giant step in the right direction. I don't watch Idol to see established performers. This year had way to much emphasis on other singers. While I loved to see Jennifer Lopez and Bon Jovi, as well as some of the others, they're are not the reason why I watch Idol. I wanted to know a lot more about the contestants and think it was a bad call for AI not to feature them as they have in the past. The voting should be changed to give the judges some say so in the finals. Perhaps the way Dancing With the Stars does it would be better. It's obvious the voting public messes up or Jordin wouldn't be there as the new Idol ... Malinda would. Reuben wouldn't be there ... Clay would. The other thing is the prize needs to be more important. In today's music biz, just a recording contract as the grand prize doesn't cut it. I am 100% certain Blake and Malinda will get contracts every bit as good as the one Jordin will get. That makes the competition more like making it to the final 10 than to win. I couldn't help but notice how laid back Blake has been about winning. Thinking about my perception that Blake is just not a competitor I suddenly realized that he probably doesn't need to concern himself all that much about winning. He's won already by the exposure the show has given him. I imagine there are plenty of record producers ready to sign a deal with him. That being the case, why is it a big deal to win? That takes a way a lot of incentive to place number one. AI needs to figure out a better package for the winner! I imagine there are a lot of other ideas that would improve the show. My hope is that they don't fall on deaf ears.
I will never watch another American Idol. I think that the show should be boycotted. The real finalists should be Melinda and Lakiesha. I do not think that the fans voted that way, I think it was preplanned. Jordin represents both sides of the fence, the black and white of America. She is what sells records even though melinda could wipe the floor vocally, with her and Blake. I like Jordin, but she is a far cry from melinda was by no doubt...in a league of her own.
I am a bit disappointed that the judges opinions are not considered in the final selection. Melinda was the best contestant I have ever seen on Idol and to vote her off make the finale a bit boring as clearly there was no contest between Blake and Jordin (who I considered the better singer). I have been watching the show over the years and some changes need to be made as Simon always say "it is a singing competition" "not a popularity concert". Melinda is one of those contestant who will always be remember and in my mind is the TRUE IDOL.

C Giardina: If I don't have my facts straight, then how come seasons 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 have all alternated? Was it just a coincidence? Yeah, no, it wasn't. If they didn't alternate, people would infer that sexism was at play. And if you notice, they alternate race too. White, black, black, white, white, black. It's all a scam. The best singer doesn't win, the best performer doesn't win, it's whatever contestant fits the needed type the best. It's entertainment, not reality. That's why they pull stunts like "voting" off the fan favorite, etc. It keeps people watching. How else do you explain why Taylor Hicks won?
2 hrs was long. It's not the Oscars. I still think Randy and Paula need to be changed. Simon should remain. You need someone with Frankness after all if Simon is crude? That's nothing compare to what the real WORLD is like so take it. VOTING VOTING....I do not think you can call thousand of times. Dancing with the Stars? They give you 5 votes on one phone. I still think when the show begins? You vote the WEAKEST LINK OFF! Then come the Finale you VOTE for the WINNER. But one person called 1,000 times that is ridiculous! The President of US gets ONE VOTE per person! I really believe the show is not a singing show anylonger it's a Popularity contest. Somethings need to be changed otherwise? It's going to be a BOMB SHOW and I don't mean that as Randy would say it to be I mean the show will Lose RATINGS. Also? Judges better take auditions next year? More seriously then this past year. If you don't get out of 10,000 people in one state you actually get no one? Oh well just don't pick someone for the sake of it or because it's been a long day. BE CAREFUL, we do NOT need another Sanjaya PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!! Be kinder to past Idols that means Judges included when you have them on the show performing. Your so distant from them well that is how it comes across our living rooms. I would say it wasn't the BEST year but okay. Enjoyed it when it first came out. What I distest is, being your so Hollywood now? You think our opinions do not count or are stupid. I truly think if you DO NOT listen to the people who WATCH your show? Eventually YOU WON'T HAVE ONE!
Thanks, Gael. I was worried there for a minute!
I keep reading that Jordin only won because her age and appearance are what sells records, so it must have been pre-planned. But, if it's what sells records, wouldn't it also be what encourages votes? Don't get me wrong, Melinda was my favorite, but I'm not in the demographic that can text 10,000 times in a night, and I'm probably not the demographic this show is after to sell records. So, it's not surprising Jordin won. And, by the way, if the show WAS fixed, it would be under investigation. There are VERY VERY strict rules for game shows, and that is what AI is considered by TV rules.
There must bea fix somewhere. It is about commercialism and marketing. The singing comes second. Last year I think that they were aiming for the adult contemporary market because Aiken was bringing in the money. This year it is the teen market. Over all, the main idea of the show is exposure. They all got a lot of that.
I'm glade jordan won i think that Blake needed to go home bfore melinda because to me the only thing he was doin waws spittin in da mic and im sayin that s bad but thats not what "idol" is lookin for they are lookin for someone who can SANG
Clearly, this year's show jumped the shark when Sanjaya left. The ratings IMMMEDIATELY dropped and stayed down for the remainder of the season. If the show wants to survive it needs to do three things: First, show the actual voting totals. If you truly want people to beleive that each contestant has a fair chance, then there is no reason to hide the numbers or the counting process. You could clearly see TPTB had "picked" Jordin to be their winner based on their actions in the finale, but based on the some of the stats out there, she probably didn't have the votes to win. Second, dump Paula, Randy, and Simon and hire judges who aren't on "medication" AND can make HONEST assessments about talent. Perhaps they might be able to find people who have proven experience with best selling artists who made it onto the charts after the year 1990(2000 would be better). Lastly, they have to make winning the show worth something. Last year was a prime example of this. Chris Daughtry was clearly the class of the field, but he didn't win. Fortunately for him, winning didn't matter and he's dominating the charts. Meanwhile, poor Taylor Hicks won the show and he's received absolutely bupkus in terms of support, promotions, and assistance. Everyone knows that you don't need to win to be successful and the "sign your name in blood" 19E contract that Clive makes the winner sign, you're probably better off not winning. Without these changes, you can expect that next year's show will continue to slide in the ratings.
Melinda and Lakisha should have been the top two. This year the show was a waste. Jordan and Blake are both good in their won ways but the best 2 of all this year was Melinda and Lakisha and yes the voting should be limited to 1 vote per person
Jordin was good. Going against Blake, she should've won. Melinda and Lakishia should've been in the final 2. Robbery has taken place since the very first season. Tamyra Gray should've won Season 1. Kelly Clarkson doesn't hold a candle to Tamyra. Also, Sanjaya in the Top 10 was a JOKE!!!
AI won't survive unless they bring it back up to the standards of last year. I watched the finale from last year again on my Tivo I saved it because it was very good and I really liked Katherine. Comparing last year to this years finale this years was trash. Most all the quests were washed up has bins that don't know when to quit and Idol contestents from the past, I wonder if that had something to do with Sanjya and what effect he had on this years show? Last year seemed everybody wanted to be on AI, not so this year seems they can't pay enough to get anybody to preform. Until they change the voting system, and maybe get some judges in there with a lick of sense instead of a bad attitude and also change there auditioning ways I don't see a bright future for this show.Until AI starts listening to it's viewers it's doomed. I almost decided to stop watching not because of anybody getting voted off but because of the whole Sanjya thing and the way Simon treated people, mainly the women. He seemed to have a grudge against Haley especially, no matter what the girl did he was really nasty. If it happens again next year that's it for me, I don't need to watch people being humiliated for his pleasure.I'm not saying he has to be sugar and spice and everything nice but he needs to stop being so abusive, if you don't like someone just say so and move on. Bring some class to AI and maybe the viewers will come back we have enough shows that beat people down, show some respect for the people that are making you money. They've got time to fix it let's see what happens.
I just jumped in so I might have missed this...but has anyone talked about why the final episode did not have the thing that had made it the best show in the past, the collaberations of all of the final 12 with big stars, one right after another? I like that part the best, and they left it out?
It was no surprise that Jordin won, she was talented, I liked Blake though, but the final song highly favored Jordin and her style, they should have had two different songs like last year with Katherine and Taylor, if they are such different artists, I actually think I would buy a Blake CD before a Jordin CD, I think Blake is uniquely different. TOO PREDICTABLE FOR A FINALE!!!
I believe that the show is weaker in terms of talent, as compared to the last season. That may have contributed to the 'decline' in ratings. Unlike the last season, there aren't a LOT of standouts. However, I do not believe that American Idol is dead. Looking at the ratings, sure, it may be down compared to the last year and viewership is comparable only with seasons 3 and 4...but looking at the big picture, TV ratings for most shows, and even TV viewership has declined this season. Given that factor, I don't think that it's surprising that American Idol (along with other hit shows like CSI, Desperate Housewives, etc.) has been affected. On the other hand, even with the decline, it is notable to consider that American Idol is STILL the leader in terms of viewership and demographics; thus, the decline can be largely attributed to the decline of TV viewership overall as well, and a small portion can be attributed to the 'lack' of star quality compared to the last season. As for changes in Idol, maybe, the judges should be given a larger ROLE in terms of the from the final 24 selection onwards. Meaning, their ratings/ feedback should be taken into consideration, along with the voting public. I am totally against changing the judges, because I believe that the combination of Randy-Paula- Simon and even Ryan should not be tampered with at this point or EVER, simply because it has worked every single season. I think that the changes should be done (a bit of tweaking) on the concept of the show itself, without veering too far away from its original concept. And also, they should stop being too commercial. Sure, the show is a huge franchise that's making oodles of money. But we as viewers do not need it shoved onto our faces when we watch. It's American idol...we are looking for a great singer, a great star, and not just some avenue for some has-beens or current famous stars to gain more popularity or promote their whatever. It's just too blatant this season.
We havn't seen the final yet in New Zealand, but was shocked to see Melinda go,(Only 1 week behind USA in NZ). Of the 2 finalists Jordin had to be the clear winner, and am sure the music industry would rather have a 17 year old winner than someone in their late 20's. Probably while Melinda wasn't in final, or sure she would have won. Will definately be watching next year.
I picked Jordin in week 11, when she blew my socks off with her vocals. I never voted! I don't have text messaging nor a home phone line. But wouldn't have anyway..why should it cost us to vote. Why aren't we able to vote on-line. The voting does need to be changed on all these shows, to vote for the one that needs to be gone. Melinda would have then been in the finale with Jordin and it would have been a real contest.
Vote for Sanjaya! Those who are tired of the Idol gimmick and fixes, come on over to the light and join us at VFTW. We have a blast! Hey Tom from Milwaukee - what's your worster screen name?? ;)
hands down Blake should have won. a lot of people can sing like Jordin , Melinda and lakisha. Not everyone has style and personality like My main man Blake. It takes more than standing there , Blake brought that to the show!!
No it's not dead yet! When I hear that some people won't even answer cell phones or text during the show ...It's not dead. I watch very little TV but I do watch American Idol. As long as they keep it clean I'll keep watching.
My husband and I are both 71 years old and never miss AI. The only remark I have is that I do think Clay was better than Reuben, Melinda was much better than Blake but we love our three judges and are looking forward to next year. I do agree that our judges should have more say in the finals.
I personally think that Blake should have won. The person who wins AI should be the person who has the best star package. Blake was so far, the best performer, entertainer, most original on top of the fact that he did sing well. His vocals may not have been the best, but he had the best overall package. No one from this season and past season have been as original and different as him. Melinda had the best vocals, but wasn't as interesting to watch. Jordin had great vocals as well by improving week after week, but still didn't have the presence on stage that Blake did. I don't agree that the judges should be changed. They have made the show what it is today. I do agree however that they should have a say in who wins and gets voted off each week, and I do agree that they should come up with inovative ideas for the show for next season to bring ratings up. The 2 hour finally was too long, it should have been only 1 hour and should have put more emphasis on the final 2 contestants. Finally, I also agree that they should put a better prize package together for the winner. As it stands now, regarless of if you win or not, if you make it to at least the final 3 (and sometimes less), you're pretty much assured to have a great career and sign a record deal the next day. It makes winning the show less appealing.
