Fans fit the battle of 'Jericho,' and CBS came tumbling down

It's official: After being pressured by fans, who sent 50,000 pounds of peanuts to its New York office, CBS has brought back "Jericho," the America-after-the-bombs drama that the network had earlier canceled.

Regular readers of this Weblog know that readers were passionate about "Jericho" -- when I wrote about canceled shows, "Jericho" was far and away the most-mourned show in the comments. Readers felt the premise was original, and despite the grim bits, enjoyed seeing regular families in a small Kansas town try to cope with the unimaginable: An America that had been bombed and had lost its communication network, with multiple people declaring themselves president in different parts of the nation, and the people of Jericho fighting to learn even such basic information as which major cities were destroyed.

It's entertainment, sure, but it's also sobering, giving us something to think about. We all know deep down that we'd really be in trouble if so many of our modern conveniences were taken away -- few folks can go all Pa Ingalls and raise their own food today -- and the show reminded us how much we take for granted.

"Jericho" featured some chilling scenes in its first season, scenes that would have stuck in my head even if the show didn't return. April, who was pregnant, died along with her baby in the town's undersupplied, understaffed hospital of ailments that almost certainly would not have killed her in a regular, pre-bomb hospital. A group of characters made a chilling visit to a former fairgrounds where a newsboard gives them tantalizing information about the outside world. While there, the townsfolk discover that a man they were planning to trade with quite possibly has turned to keeping people as slaves in a bloody back room. And neighboring town New Bern goes to war with Jericho, in a situation that seems all the more scary for the creepily plausible way it develops.

It's going to be interesting to see the summer speculation on where the show will go with its new life. Veteran actor Gerald McRaney, the town's mayor and a show mainstay, apparently was killed off in the season finale. Unless the show pulls some magical twist and brings him back, he'll be missed. He delivered possibly the best lines of the series, saying something like "I am about to go to war with New Bern, Kansas. The home of the nearest Costco. Today is already just about as weird as I can handle."

So come on, "Jericho" fans. Share your thoughts about what will happen to the town, its inhabitants, and the splintered nation, in a second season of life after the bombs.

This is wonderful news. Just last night I sent CBS an e-mail expressing how frustrating and angering it is to see good shows get axed and lousy ones go on and on and on. Jericho is top notch and I'd like to see it garner a few Emmy awards. I only wish we could have saved American Dreams a couple of years ago.
Thank God for the fans. Is this enough proof that Nielsen ratings are not accurate today? With VCR, DVR and iTunes it's certainly apparent that many viewers do not watch their favorite shows 'live'. Clearly, all of network television needs to determine better methods for counting viewers. We realize its about advertising revenue! Congratulations to CBS for doing the right thing.
THANKS, CBS FOR LISTENING, AND ALL THE FANS WHO SUPPORTED BRINGING A WONDERFUL SHOW BACK!!! I think we're going to see Jake in a whole new light, and he will lead the town into the "new world". Hawkins still has some explaining to do about who is looking for him, and how far will they go? The fall can't come fast enough!
To Zara Kramer: Don't buy the iTunes episodes just yet! Part of the CBS statement said they'll be re-running Season 1 this summer. Warm up the TiVo!
I am so pleased. Now I can go back to watching Katie Couric as well as Face the Nation! It was amazing to see a grassroots revolt against CBS spring up over the internet. Unbelievable.
I haven't seen any episodes of this show, but am I the only one to think that it sounds a LOT like the late lamented series "Jeremiah"? Even down, somewhat, to the name of the series...
I thought it was incredibly stupid to cancel the show. I really enjoy it. Funny how movies and tv consist of nothing more that opinions. Last night I saw the movie "knocked up" and while it is getting very good reviews, I thought is stunk. Just another opinion.
Glad to see a review by someone who actually watched the show - and I too loved the Costco line. We Jericho Rangers rock!
I'm ecstatic, it was really depressing that a show which was getting steadily better all season was cancelled in mid-firefight lol... This is the first show I've watched on CBS since M*A*S*H, and I was about ready to wait 20 years before trying again... :D
I did not watch this program during the regular season. I started watching it from the web. I was about six episodes into it when the cancellation notice came. Now that it is revived, I can go back to watching it.
Jericho is a tale of an uncertain world. We live in a world of similar uncertainty. Governmental fractiousness and greed and shadowy fringe interests are the reason Jericho draws such interest. If networks don't know what their viewers want, they need to be reminded.
GREAT show with Imagination.....true, it's a scenerio I hope NEVER happens....but what if? That show gives an audience a lot to think about. The acting was great and everything was plausible. Geral McRaney could be brought back, as to "fake" his death....for whatever reason. I know the writers probably thought the show would only last the one season, so they killed him off....but he was the "father" figure for the show. Revive him, like Capt. Kirk was in "Generations".
I hope CBS expands the fictional world Jericho created. I want to see how Mr. Hawkins deals with the new president that was behind the bombs. I want to see how New York fared as the only major city not hit by a bomb and had to get by cut off from the rest of the United States and the world. How did the new government form and is it legitimate? Are there other factions still trying to be the power in charge? Who will survive the battle between Jericho and New Bern? How will these two towns co-exist after the dust settles and bullets are shot? What happened to the rest of the world without the United States? The possibilities are endless for this show to explore.
I am very, very happy CBS decided to change their minds! I was so disappointed when Jericho was cancelled, I swore off network tv. Now I have a reason to watch.
Thank You CBS.... for keeping a show worth watching. I'm afraid there aren't many these days I'd care to watch...It is entertaining and thought provoking.
It is so wonderful to know that someone really is out there listening to THE PEOPLE! My husband just served 29 years in the military, (the rest of our family served the last 20 years of his career) and I can tell you that human nature depicted on "Jericho" is closer to reality than so called reality shows. It's amazing to watch good souls come together to fight against the darknesses of which man is capable. The military becomes a FAMILY when times get tough and Americans are isolated someplace far from home. The worse the conditions, the closer we become. And we all know how seemingly ordinary people become HEROES when they must. We see it in the news often enough. However, on the flip side, who hasn't watched the shelves of the local supermarket clear completely of items when there's an impending natural disaster? People start out polite and very quickly become rude-to-downright dangerous. When demands outweigh supply, the bad sides of human nature show. Survival instincts are all powerful! "Jericho"hasn't shown a lot of the worst that men are capable of, and it hasn't shown too much grey area either. People from the town of "Jericho" generally represent good, with small town evil represented by the actively powerful men of "New Bern". But, it wouldn't be too hard for the tables to turn, would it? We'll miss Gerald McRaney. He was a great alpha male with terrific leadership abilities. We've seen that "Jake" is closer to him than his "good" son. We need the strong male characters of "Jake", "Hawkins", and "Stanley". We simply must find out what's happening with government outside of "Jericho". But our small town in Kansas is the center of the Universe for the duration of the show. May that be a very long time. The writers have done a terrific job so far. Thanks for the ride! There have been so many shows that I never watched twice. "Jericho" had my family hooked from the very beginning and it only got better. The characters have some depth and the storyline caused us to think. Just because something is threatening doesn't mean that we shouldn't face it. Keep writing provocative shows!!!! Challenge us!
This is exceptional news. "Jericho" was the only show I had to make sure and watch each week, whether it be during its "live" time or through online viewings. I can't wait to see how they explain some of the mysteries still left unresolved.
I find it sad that so many people are work up about this show or any show. But no one is worked up about our children dying. We can organize to try and save a show, but we can't organized to get our children home. How sad for all of us. We are at war. But no one seems to care. How can this not be all we talk about until the situation is resolved?
While my son and I enjoyed the show who ever decides on tactics and personel deployment have no idea what they are doing. I hope it becomes some what more logical in the next season.
Of course they thought about canceling this great program - they needed to make room for more so called reality shows.
My husband and I are so glad CBS changed its mind. This is a great show. For those of us who crave more intelligent shows rather than ones who depend solely on sex, violence, and more sex and violence, this is a great move on CBS' part. We look forward to its return!
thank you saving my favorite show.
I also have a copy of the 1959 classic "Alas Babylon" and as a retired USAF officer I have to say the TV show sucked by comparison. All the endless little subplots. They also acted like Radio Shack didn't exist and nobody ever heard of short wave radio. LOL! But the show was better than a lot of the other crap on TV so it deserved to stay. Lock and load, and bring on the beef jerky..
Jericho will unfold with the dramatic superiority the writers brought to it originally. Kudos to the fans for the hard work to turn around the titanic media monolith CBS!! We will continue the fight and engage all of our friends -- and be aware, there are people right now who watched who didn't even know it was cancelled. These many viewers and NEW ones will be drawn to the show through the massive press and creative promotions that the fans will continue to bring!! Thanks so very much, Nina, for coming to your senses! This will improve the quality of the industry by educating the decisionmakers of the power of the fans, and our desire for quality, multi platform entertainment.
My wife and I are fans of the show and have NEVER missed an episode. Wisdom has come to the CBS network. Looking forward to the 2nd season in the hopes that more than 8 episodes will come to pass. Wishing the cast and crew good luck! Keep up the good work. Looking forward to Hawkins encounter with the train. Hmmm...speeding train, unmovable tank on the train tracks...talk about derailing the situation. Long live the Rangers!
I was shocked when i heard they were taking the show off the air. This was actually one show that made you do a reality check. Sorry we lost Gerald McRainey (a wonderful actor.) Power to the peoples voice. Can't wait for the new season to start.

Finally a network that cares about QUALITY! I loathe to watch "reality" shows, I have a brain, after all.... So we have a imaginative AND reality-based show, lots of twists and turns, an AMAZING ensemble cast! Where to go: Heather will come back, the Marines will help (?), Hawkins will use the tank, then abandon it and disappear (for a while), New Bern will get pushed back (for a while?) OR Jake will destroy New Bern (or atleast the Mayor) since they killed his father. Jake will step up to the plate as co-leader with his brother. Someone will discover the bomb in the shed and.... And possibly Hawkins daughter will step into his role as family protector. Someone will try and ransack the spring/summer harvests? And there will be a wedding!!! :) But, I will miss "Mac" as the patriarch of Jericho. I have been a fan of Geralds since "Simon and Simon". Miss you dude! I hope they will re-air the season 1 over the summer???
I am so very excited about the return of Jericho. I love the show and never missed one of them. I am also truly delighted that people came together and made a difference. Just think of the possibilities of that alone. Thank You CBS for listening. And for all of you who participated in the fight for Jericho YOU ROCK
Spoiler alert? I hadn't seen this season but wanted to see it sometime. Hopefully I'll forget what I read here by the time I watch it....
This is the first show in a long time that is original And this along with the really good acting makes it a show to be followed. Maybe if the rest of the country would watch they will be won over, It worked on my wife
Sorry, the show as not that good but I do have to applaud CBS because they actually listened to the shows fans and brought it back from cancellation, if only for 1 more season to see if it gains in the ratings. Unfortunately other networks such as Fox, ABC and my favorite, Sci-Fi Channel (which is owned by NBC) do not bend to the pressures of the people who keep them in business and cancel so many good shows, such as Sci-Fi Channel did with Stargate SG1 after a run of 10 seasons. To bad we can't cancel the execs in charge.
CBS makes me happy. Long live CBS. Let everyone know that Jericho is back and to tell them to watch the show this summer in rebroadcast or all episodes online like I watched the whole first season.
Jericho was the best new show last season. I had to tape it due my busy schedule, but later would watch it and narrate the details of each scene for my blind father, who absolutely loves this show. It sparks discussion about ongoing current events, history, government, sociology, and humanistic basic traits. It shows the potential fragility of our current world. Forget those so called reality shows. If I wanted reality I would go outside. Much like Jericho, try waking up the day after Katrina in MS. for glimpse of reality. It is possibly the Thomas Payne Pamphlet of our age. Thanks CBS for bringing back an awesome show. If possible revive Gerald McRainey's Mayor Green character. Someone has to have the "Jimeny Cricket wisdom". Excellent show!!!
I'm so glad it is back ya for the power of us the fans and by the way this isn't the first time fans have come through for a show. I'm looking forward to season 2 as well as watching season 1 on dvd wonder whats going to show up on the extras :)
Hooray for Jericho!! If you missed critical episodes, you can watch them for free on cbs.com. The full season is available. ... click on the "Full Episodes" link, then "Jericho."
Tickled pink thats all I can say. Next to Lost, this is the most original show on TV. Glad its comming back
OK, here's how Gerald McRaney can come back--> LAST episode: he was in his house badly wounded, laying on the table...He closed his eyes, breathing virtually non-existant, and the camera cuts to the boys breaking down and crying...just then Mom comes in the door! She throws herself over him crying as the camera cuts to the boys going out on the porch to tell the troops the bad news. We never see him again and ASSUME he is dead. Now NEXT episode: Camera opens on Mom (who is a nurse, mind you) still laying over her husband thinking he is dead, when she all of a sudden she sees a tear rolling down his cheek...She immediately jumps into action applying CPR, calling for help, and doing all the home-grown nurse-things one does to bring someone back from the brink! Gerald McRaney of course survives, just like the show...! Now...THANK YOU, CBS, for doing the right thing and bringing back this wonderful show!!!
I didn't even realize it got cancelled. How dare them! In this brain dead audience world that loves these fake unreality shows or worse yet American Yodal and the sick take offs of that crap this is a unique format with a cool cast!! Besides who doesn't want to know why these "Marines" had the funky looking flag?? I got rid of cable and dish cause it ain't worth it so don't you dare take off one of the few shows I do watch.
As many other stated, this is the ONE show on TV that I make sure to watch each week. I also had not heard it was about to be canceled but I am sure glad that decision was reversed. I don't watch TV anymore because other than Jericho and perhaps CSI, NCIS and Criminal Minds, there is nothing worth watching. I don't know who they are that watch those reality crap shows, but I for one, cannot stand any of them. Something like Jericho is my kind of story. Something based around real people, real life, a REAL possible future reality and how it MIGHT play out were it to occur. What is really scary is the premise for the attack, trucks carrying nukes driving to each city and exploding them is something that could very well happen. I do not think people realize how truly easy it would be to do this - so watching Jericho has given me something to watch that is a feasible future unless we do something about it before it is too late. The only criticism I have, if you can call it one, is where are people like me in the show?? Other than Gerald McRaney who was an ex-marine, where are all the other military veterans, guardsmen and active duty? We Vets are small percentage of the population I know, but every town has veterans of military service. Those people would definitely step forward in scenarios like Jericho and would be able to help set up proper defense measures, training of basic tactics etc etc. I know I would as a Vet.
Why all the celebrating over just 7 episodes ? CBS is calling this a second season ? What a joke. We will not even see these episodes until 2008 at best. CBS doesn't care about the fans - they just don't want any bad press about their network.
original? are you kidding? if you like this sort of premise you could always watch "Survivors" (ca. 1975, BBC) which, frankly, seems to have a somewhat more plausible basis for the destruction of civilization and the ensuing drama, to-wit: mass infection from a pathogen carried via air travel.
All faithful Jericho Rangers, please make it a point to post thankyou's to any newspaper stories run on the net, so we can continue the free advertising for the show that this story is generating. Encourage everyone to watch the Season 1 repeat this summer, so we get more viewers for season 2 ! Great job all you NUTS :)
Characterization is what makes Jericho such an enjoyable show. The premise is realistic enough in light of current world events. Add to that a community having to survive with less and less in a hostile environment. I expect the show's cancellation and resurrection to help build its audience. Welcome back, Jericho!
Thanks, CBS, for bringing back this excellent, original show! Can't wait to see the new episodes!
It's nice to see that the network honcho's finally might be getting it. Good entertainment isn't always ratings driven. It takes time for a good show to develop an audience.
I am an avid fan of Jericho too and nothing makes me happier to have this wonderful dramatic series brought back from cancellation. I have faithfully sumbitted emails and faxes and made numerous phone calls to Nina's office and sent nuts too. I have never been this passionate about anything ever before and there would have been no stopping me and alot of the other fans of ths show until its return. This show is about community and looking out for each other even in the most devastating of events. Its not about who is sleeping with who, or switching wives, or living on an island, or whether or not you can sing or dance. I am sooo sick to death of programs where all you do is sit there and look at the tv screen and wonder- "Why do I pay so much for cable when there's nothing good on to watch even with 400 channels"- and seriously think about having it disconnected because one of the only shows I felt was worth watching has been cancelled. This wonderful Jericho came along and made me and my entire family sit down together and watch and discuss the possiblities of the what ifs. I can't even get my family to sit down together and eat all together at the same time but we watch this show all together every week. This is the only night we actually do eat together. I am not about to lose this quality show and not about to lose this family moment. I don't think CBS thought it would have this effect on the viewers that it does and I want to commend them for having the courage to bring it back. Now we need to step up again and show them just how right they were to do this.
WHAT?!?! CANCEL?!?! PLease do not cancel this wonderful series...and as the person above said, it is a very sombering show and I am thankful it is still on.
Just goes to show you--if we all unite together and make our voices heard we can make a difference Now lets take it one step further and take on Congress!
I love Jericho!! Was very disappointed to hear of the show being cancelled. Sometimes, the acting was king of weak, but the subject matter held my interest. I watch very few shows, and this was one that I did watch every Wednesday evening. I'm glad to hear it is back-on-track.
