TV ads that creep us out: Man as milking machine

Filed Under:

Creepy can be good ... when you're talking about "The Addams Family," or watching a zombie movie. But is "creepy" really the sentiment major corporations want associated with their precious products? No? So why do so many of them spend millions on ads that make viewers shudder and change the channel?

You know the Creepy Commercial o' the Moment: It's been mentioned multiple times in Test Pattern's comments so far this summer. It's the Sour Skittles ad, with the older man (update: It's David Groh, who played Joe on "Rhoda") hooked up to a milking machine like a cow. It's just nasty all the way around, but if you must see it, you can watch it here.

I guess I get what Skittles was thinking. They're not going for the audience who will be grossed out by the ad. They're apparently aiming for their target audience, kids, mostly boys, who like sour candy and are entertained by gross ads. (And if you read some of the comments on that YouTube link, their target audience seems to think the ad is "awesome.") But regardless, this ad is still right in the front of the pack as a possible Worst Ad of the Year candidate, at least in our contest.

There's at least one ad I know of that's even creepier than Milking Man. You know it: It's Digger the Dermatophyte (I always want to type "Digger the Hermaphrodite"), the hideous toenail monster who opens up a cartoon toenail as if it's a door and jumps in and...aaugh, I can't even describe it anymore, and I'm sure not linking to a video of it. I'm just glad it can't win again this year due to the one-time-only rule.

Who else makes the Creepy List? The plastic-headed Burger King, for sure. Pretty much anything involving him qualifies as creepy in my book, but there was an older one where he ends up in bed with some poor person that really sticks out in my memory. What's worse, waking up with "The Godfather" horse head, or with the Burger King? The jury is still out. Fast food ads often reach for the "creepy" button instead of the "clever," it seems.

Also creepy? Plastic-smiled Bob with his erectile problems. Advertising this product is going to be difficult on the best day, but smarmy Bob and his stupid wife and friends don't make it any more tolerable.

"Creepy" is defined as "producing a nervous shivery apprehension," and also as "annoyingly unpleasant." Not all bad commercials are creepy...some are just stupid, or annoying, or dumb. But if you've got other creepy commercials in mind, please, share them in the not-so-creepy comments.

I don't know what's being advertised but the commerical with the ADULT 'child' in the kitchen sink being bathed by his parents is just wrong! I don't watch it long enough to see what they're pitching!
No one mentioned the gum commerial where the person eats dirt first and then chews the gum and smiles with sparkling teeth.  I can not stand to watch that commercial.
The "milking machine" guy is the actor who played Joe on the Rhoda show.  The commercial is repulsive and makes me wonder "What were they thinking".  The rabbit one is strange but not repulsive.  The Burger King "king" is just not right.
The creepiest ads to me besides the toenail and mucus ones already mentioned are the car ads (Toyota or Honda) where the car runs over a 'mechanical bug' and then slurps it into the gas tank. Very weird!
I love the Jack O Links commercials with the sasquach. For some reason they tickle me...........I guess that I am lacking in good entertainment.
I really hate the mucinex commercials - who thought that little green mucus mascots would be a good idea? I also hate the maltesers commercial with the guy on the girl on the couch where she says "come on, give me a malteser". Something about her laugh at the end and his creepy smile makes me change the channel whenever it comes on.
I saw a commercial for a StayFree pad roller coster. I still don't get where they were going with it.  I guess they are supposed to be fun for girls?
I'm glad someone else found the Orville Redenbacher commercial creepy.  His face just doesn't work right...
I'm freaked out by creepy commercials as much as anyone - the aforementioned Skittles "milking" ad as well as others - but I can't help but roll my eyes at the philistines who post here attempting to turn this board into a soapbox to moralize the depravity they see on TV today. You're entitled to your opinion - but it has nothing to do with a discussion about creepy commercials. "Creepy" and "morally offensive" are not the same thing, you know.
I agree with all of those. The other day, I saw a new creepy commercial from Maytag. It featured teddy bears whose faces had been put on their stomachs rather than their heads.
I have yet to see the skittles add, but the others are too familiar.  They do prove two things.  We have too much time in front of our televisions and they certainly do get our attention even if it is negative.  By the way, as creepy as the Burger King is it won't stop me from eating there instead of McDoom.  What about this thought;is Ronald McDonald NOT creepy?
I hate those damn animated Red Bull commercials. I think they're supposed to be funny in some other country. But like Jerry Lewis, 100% of the laughs are lost in translation. It just leaves me feeling icky and annoyed.
I've read all of the above comments and agree with all of you!  Commercials are getting disgusting these days?  How is watching an old man be milked make me hungry for Skittles.  UGH!  The Burger King man has always made me think of a Pedophile..ewwww!  The Sonic commercials are about stupid and the feminine hygiene commericals...good grief!  We all know we need to buy for "that time of the month."  We don't need a demonstration or to see how absorbent a maxi pad is.  Jeez!  GET A LIFE!  Are they not selling the stuff or what?  And, I don't know about you, but who cares if my tampon looks like a friggin' pearl?
Years and years ago, there was a creepy orange juice ad where the woman stared at the man with this indescribable look on her face ... like she was just about to pick up a knife and slam it into his throat ... while she intoned, "It tastes the way juice USED to taste." That expression was just on her face for a split second, but it creeped out the whole commercial.
I agree that the man in the Sour Skittles ad looks like Joe from the Rhoda show.  I thought the ad was horrible, then when I recognized him, I felt really sorry for him.  How desperate was he to get work?
The top 3 ads that creep me out are (least to worst):  The Mucinex ads that feature the snot family being vacuumed out of your chest cavity, the new Trojan ads where buying a condom makes the pig turn into a man and makes the woman suddenly want to throw herself at him, and ads for something called "Maxoderm" which is some tube of stuff that I'm guessing is an ED product.  The Maxoderm ads feature some really old-looking man staring at some 20-something girl in a club, with said 20-something girl looking like she is working an invisible strip pole, and then the two of them running off to a back room together with the girl stopping to say "He doesn't need a prescription, he uses Maxoderm!!" - it's like an ad for how to hook up with a prostitute.  Creepy AND gross!!!  I'm just glad they did not give any details for how to use that tube of Maxoderm.  That way I can imagine that Maxoderm is a toothpaste and not something more gross.
After reading several people's "wish I hadn't watched it" comments, I decided to look at the Skittles commercial.  My jaw is still on the floor.  That's an image I won't be able to get out of my head for a long time.  And BTW, Vikki from Princeton, NJ, your mom is right:  The guy being milked IS David Groh, who played Rhoda's husband Joe.  Ugh.
The dancing guy in the Berries & Cream Skittles ad really creeps me out...looks like an overgrown leprechaun on crack! I always have to change the channel when that ad comes on.
But the one that really gets to me is the one where Sen. Bob Dole tells the world that he has "ED" and uses Viagra.  Talk about TMI........
I agree with the Geico, Burger King ads, and Skittles ads.  However, the one new one is definitely the (I think) Domino's pizza ad where the father and son are getting cookie crumble all over their face due to the dessert pizza.  I swear they haunt my dreams!

I agree with TJ, the Sponge Bob NO Pants is very creepy and what good is a commercial if you can't even remember what they are advertising?  I cannot remember either what the commercial was for...just the bubbles covering the no pants.
I'm going to have to go with TJ, Sponge Bob No Pants is one of those things that makes you wanna shiver and go, "buhhh!"

Also, the new pregnancy test that's "The most technologically advanced thing you will ever PEE ON!" with the pee coming from the top left of the screen... you have GOT to be KIDDING!!!!
I'm dating myself, but I do believe that guy attached to the milking machine is Joe, Rhoda's husband.  That makes it even creepier, becasue I feel like I know him.
I agree with all of you...all of these are BAD.  I particularly find the "Whiskas" cat food commercial totally gross and creepy...with the wife who is talking to her husband, who is "acting like a cat and using the cat box."  She waves the air for the "bad smell" and he says: "I guess I should cover this up"
and he paws like he's covering up his "mess."  The wife even has a totally discusted look on her face!  This stuff isn't funny, it's just GROSS!
What about that darn Quizno's ads with those totally creepy and annoying singing gerbils? Whatever they were, it was down right disturbing..
I think this commercial was for a pizza company (Dominos?). They were offering fresh baked brownies with a large pizza and this brown mass with legs stood on the doorstep during delivery and got hugs from the mom and child. They ended up smeared with chocolate. It was gross looking and that walking brownie looked like a big pile of **** with legs. Nasty! Every time the kid went to hug it, I was creeped out. Time to turn the channel.
I am sick and tired and definitely creeped out with the tampon and sanitary femimine hygeine products commercials.  Every woman on this earth knows how to use a tampon and or sanitary pad and we don't need a tv commercial to advertise it.  I'ts VERY disgusting and in extremely poor taste. It's much too personal much too private to have it appear on a television in restaurant, office etc. or any where for that matter. Enough is enough!
The Burger King commercials are probably the best i've seen in a long time. The mustache ones are hilarious, and dont get me started on the one's with the king in some of sports biggest moments. Now the subLIMEnal one's are weird. The strawberries and cream leprauchan is funny too
I have seen all the commercials mentioned here and I agree with all of you that they truely suck except  the Geico caveman. But I think what disturbs me most are the movie trailors that are shown.  They are excerpts from the "R" rated movies during time when my children 9 and 6 are watching.  Hostel totally pissed me off when I saw it advertised around 11:00am during a  big sporting event my family was viewing.   The newest ones Room 1408 and Vacancy make me sick.  Using someone elses abbreviation "WTF are these TV stations wanting to show our innocent kids. I've called the cable providers and they have told me they have no control over the advertising. BULL
We saw a new commercial last night for one of those "male enhancement/stamina" products.  I could not believe how blatant it was!  It is filled with messages on an answering machine from an anonymous woman raving about how incredible the guy was the night before.  In one she calls him "Mr. Stamina."  In the final message she informs him that she is coming home NOW and he needs to take some more of whatever the product is.  The thing was one step removed from one sided phone sex, and it's on a cable channel during prime time!

And one added comment on the disturbing Skittles commercials:  I was also creeped out by the little man being stuck to the ceiling to stop the Skittle leak.  Are their marketing people all on drugs?
Please note: "But regardless" is redundant.  It frustrates me when writers choose not to use words correctly.  The reason grammatical rules are followed is so that we are all on the same page.  It's not creative, it's just annoying.
I can't believe that this commercial got on the air. I believe the logo was "PSP" which could be play station portable). Two guys on an airliner, one playing the game and the other one looking on. The onlooker keeps urging at the top of his voice to "use the cluster bombs, use the cluster bombs." Screaming "use the cluster bombs" on a packed airliner would put these guys in prison along with the idiots who sponsored and aired the commercial.
Ok,Heather from Atlantic City is right the bearded interviewer is gross and Vickki from Princeton good spot that it is Rhoda's husband. But is anyone else disgusted with the DQ adds for the waffle and the Ice cream lady and the gross sexual context?
OK, I just watched the long beard Skittles commercial and that has to be, by far, the creepiest ad I have ever seen! What it has to do with Skittles is beyond me. I don't know if I can ever eat them again. And I also agree that "feminine product" ads have gone way too far! And I really don't need to know how well ED drugs work! GROSS! I think we need to go back to the old days where you weren't allowed to say what drugs were for.
I hate the breath mints (don't remember the brand) commercials with the blonde girl who says "no matter what". God they are so stupid!
yeah and what about the EVIL looking guy whose face is dancing around on those DITECH animated commercials?  Ughhh--
Very creepy Cold Stone Creamery commercial:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=3Yor58HGClw

And the Sprite sublymonal campaign:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=xrv8-wsf8qo
Quizno's toasted sub ad with the freaky hamster, creapy but captivating!  -"they gotta a pepper bar!"

http://youtube.com/watch?v=cG042nkReBA

The one that grosses me out the most is the one where the moron announces " I have Genital herpes" and the mousey lil girlfriend says "and I don't" and then they proceed to tell us all about the medication so he wont transmit herpes to her. YUCK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree with the ones who say we need to clean up commercials.  I'm just waiting for the day that my kids come up to me and ask me what erectile dysfunction is or what personal lubricant is for.
Vivaxa commercials are really really really annoying..the one where the lady is leaving a message on the guy's machine about how "You wore me out!  That Vivaxa is really good!  Are you ready for more big boy?"
The talking boogers in the Mucinex ads almost make me sick. I can't imagine how anyone could have seen the pitch for that ad and thought, "Talking boogers! That's what America wants!"

I just saw the Sour Skittles milking ad for the first time a couple of days ago and my jaw dropped -- that is a seriously disturbing ad.

I agree that the re-animated Orville Redenbacher is really creepy. His family must feel sick every time they see it.
How about the Vagisil ads that show a fish and a skunk?
Re: they have ratings for our tv viewing, but who is watching out for these commercials that catch the attention of our children if not more than the shows themselves?

I agree with Ginger. Also a mom of 2, I have taken to turning off the golf channel when the kids are around because of the ED commercials. Yes, their primary target market is men, but women and children like to watch TV too. We don't need to go from Tiger Woods as a role model to erectile disfunction conversations with our 8 year old girl.
Anybody see the Want2BSquare commercial? Here's a link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTprLo8W6TE

It's basically a guerrilla marketing ad for the Scion. After seeing that, I'm more likely to puke than buy a car. That coupled with the "Little Deviants" ad just sends the message that only creepy people drive Scions.
Two commercials that have grossed me out. KY Touch is one. The other is the milk commercial, where the guy is taking a bath in milk. All I can think of is body hair floating in a glass of milk.
Oooh, gross!  The anti-smoking commercials where the girl at the movie with her boyfriend is hocking up WHATEVER, and the boys who are hocking up some of the same and it falls from a tree onto the face of a passing girl.
The ads with the couple where he says "I have genital herpes" and she says "and I don't."  Among other things, I'm sure that actor is THRILLED to have that on his resume/highlight tape.  Don't remember exactly what the name of the medicine is, however.  Because I DON'T have genital herpes.
It's not really creepy, but those commericals where the guy yells "VD Dub for under 26thousand" or something like that, very annoying! I actually like the rabbits foot commerical, I thought it was cute. I do have to agree about the freaky back from the dead popcorn commericals though.
Anything with smarmy soccer moms who always have to tell dad what to do. How did men ever make it this far without their brilliant wives?
I would just like to say there are reasons I don't watch TV, and creepy/insulting/annoying/(other)ing commercials are the main one.
