'Law & Order' shows get new blood

Dick Wolf, creator of the "Law & Order" franchise, talked to critics Tuesday, and he brought along a fairly new star from each of his three "L&O" shows. Wolf and crew discussed everything from a rivalry with "Gunsmoke" to the future of episodes starring possible presidential candidate Fred Thompson.

I've sorted interesting tidbits from the panel by show, so if you only care about one series, you can quickly find info on your favorite.

'LAW & ORDER' (original recipe)
Lots of changes in store for the main game. Jeremy Sisto, who was on Tuesday's panel, is joining the show, replacing Milena Govich. English actor Linus Roache (like Sisto, he was on the canceled "Kidnapped") will play the new lead prosecutor, and Sam Waterston will take over the lead DA job from Fred Dalton Thompson.

Thompson's possible presidential run makes for a sticky situation: Because of the equal-time rule, reruns of episodes he appeared in would have to be pulled from NBC, but not from TNT, since cable networks don't have to follow the same rules as broadcast. Alan Sepinwall, who asked Wolf the question, has more on that here.

Jesse L. Martin, Sisto's partner, is currently signed for only 13 of the next season's 22 episodes, and Wolf was vague about what will happen there. "Jessie could stay for the entire season...we could cast another new detective...it's all up in the air," he said.

The show will return in January, not in the fall, which suits Wolf fine. "I'm very happy to be on Sunday night after football," he said. "I think you will get a run of 22 (episodes) with basically no pre-emptions, no repeats."

Wolf was also asked about his show's shot at surpassing "Gunsmoke," which is currently the second-longest-running prime-time show in US history (the Disney series is #1, but it's not a drama). L&O is the longest-running show of those currently on the air. "I sure hope (we'll surpass them)," Wolf said, later adding that he'd met "Gunsmoke" star James Arness once years ago, adding "it's nothing personal."

'CRIMINAL INTENT'
One critic asked about the upcoming "Sex and the City" movie, wondering if that would affect Chris "Mr. Big" Noth's role as Det. Mike Logan. Noth wasn't on the panel, and Wolf was brusque, saying he didn't know if Noth had signed on to the film, and that it wouldn't change the TV show's shooting schedule.

Alicia Witt will be appearing on "CI" for six episodes, playing Noth's partner, Det. Nola Falacci, while Julianne Nicholson is out on maternity leave. (Nicholson is due in September.) Witt describes Falacci as a young married mother of two, who loves the intellectualism of her job, yet can't wait to get home to her family and "just be mom." Says Witt "I know she's...not necessarily the most tactful girl in the world."

'SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT'
Adam Beach is joining the "SVU" cast full-time as Detective Chester Lake, a member of the Mohawk nation. Beach said that something happened to his character as a child that brought him into contact with the SVU, and after a childhood spent in and out of foster homes, he eventually joined the unit. Asked about the Mohawks, Beach said "From what we say about the Mohawks is that they are the toughest cats as a nation of people...just who the heck is going to climb a hundred feet in the air and build buildings?"

Beach later talked about how "SVU" is his first major network show, comparing the experience to making films. "It's like a big-budget movie, but it's cut down in 10 days, and they put in the best parts," he said.

Good breakdowns, all the Law and Order's are good shows and it's great to see what going to be coming up
What happend to Goren and Emes on Law & Order Criminal Intent.
Are the two original characters of Criminal Intent
returning also?
what happened to goren and eames and also, why did their captain end up with the eye patch. are the earlier seasons out on dvd?
Teresa: I believe the eyepatch was due to Bell's Palsy.

Seasons 1-3 of "CI" are out on DVD. I see them on Amazon.com.
Jamey Sheridan (goren and eames captain) was afflicted with the same disease his character was which was bell's palsy. They wrote it into the show for him.
It sucks that they've cut out Vincent D'onofrio and Katherine Erbe (sp?) They were such great characters and their chemistry on the show was amazing. I've always liked Logan but his partner is annoying. I wish they'd just bring back Goren and Eames and have Noth and whatever-her-name-is do like one or two episodes only.
Jesse L. Martin should remain on all the espiosodes. I'm tired of tring to figure out the leads it changes so offten. Additionaly SVU is already a great show don't mess it up with to many changes. the shows chemistry works well as it is with each character.
I prefer Goren and Eames.  I stopped watching CI when Chris Noth came on board.  I don't like the show without the two original actors.  I really like watching D'Onofrio as I feel he is a great actor.
I think I have seen all the Law & Orders over and over and the reason I believe the show has lasted is they keep the romantic crap out of it.
I love CI now that Chris Noth and his partner is on.  I never watched the original CI because I hated Goren and Emes.  I now can watch all three!
I really wished they would bring back Michael Moriarty
back as ben Stone I think he should replace Sam Waterston.
It's not CI without Goren and Eames. Vincent D'Onfrio is an exceptional actor and without him the show isn't worth watching.
I think Sam Waterston is one of our most under-rated actors.  I've admired him forever, going way back to other shows he was in.

^I agree whole-heartedly. I hate it when the shows put a heavy emphasis on romance. If I want that, I'd go watch other crappy shows instead.
I wont watch CI anymore because D'Onfrio isn't on it... its not even going to be worth watching.. its not the same show.. everyone can kiss CI-- goodbye!
wat about L&O CI. det eames and goran are they returning. it would be a shame if they didnt. i only watched CI becoz of Goran.....GREAT ACTOR.
Nothing "happened" to Goren and Eames; they are returning.  L&O:CI alternates every week between a Goren & Eames episode and a Logan & Wheeler/Falacci episode.

Jamey Sheridan left the show bfore last season because he was tired of having to travel so much between NYC (where the bulk of the show is filmed) and California (where his wife and kids are situated).  He was replaced by Eric Bogosian.
When you slap a counterfeit coin on the bar it just doesn't ring true. Neither does D'Onofrio. Chris Noth is much more credible.
I have watched all the Law & Order series since the beginning.  I like Chris Noth, but Goram amd Eames make CI.  I really love to watch SVU.
I am sorry that Goren and Eames are off the show I like the way he gets into the criminals mind.
Great. Just what we need: Someone whose acting ability is equal to a piece of cardboard. I have nothing against Adam Beach personally, but -- bluntly -- the man cannot act. I've seen him in several things and he's the same stiff-necked, painfully slow, cardboard cut-out in everything he does. He was given a six-year, $6M contract by Wolf, when (at the rate things are going) we cannot guarantee the L&O: SVU will continue through 6 more seasons. (Yes, I'm aware they *just* wrapped s9 *and* s10 on the 17th.)

I'd really like to know what they intend to do with the character of John Munch. He already has very little screen time. It's great for Belzer, because his contract is undoubtedly 'pay or play,' but gee...some of us would still *love* to see him on the eps. It's even better when we can see him fitting into an ensemble script, as opposed to merely being used to provide his invaluable quips or quirky ideas.

I maintain that bringing Beach into the show, will mean we'll never see Munch outside the walls of the precinct. Until I hear something direct from Belzer about his involvement in the show, *not* using him is simply unacceptable. (end rant)
The USA Network press release announcing Alicia Witt's casting on CI (www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=104&STORY=/www/story/07-16-2007/0004626193&EDATE=) indicates that Goren and Eames remain active members of the unit.
Hey, CI fans -- wake up!  D'Onofrio and Erbe (Goren and Eames) haven't gone anywhere, they are still on the show, but only on every other episodes (11 episodes out of 22 per season).
Bring back Goren & Eames permanantly, tell Noth to go back to Carrie on Sex and the City. Whoever his partner is, tell her to go some where too.
I finally achieved L&O fatigue last year.  I can't watch them anymore.  I try to watch the occasional rerun on TNT but they seem to keep recycling the same 5 seasons  that I've already seen.
I love L&O:SVU! My husband is a detective and we bought every year from 1-5! We have almost gotten through all of them. I hope SVU doesn't go anywhere for a while or else I will have to go to the DVD's to get my L&O:SVU fix!
I just finished watching SVU 03/18/08. I could not believe how ignorant incorrect and irreponsible that episode was!! Is this the same network that aired "Third Watch"? You have insulted Paramedics worldwide. Whoever wrote the auto accident scene should not write another without a lot of research.
