'Bionic Woman': Producer defends Washington casting

Filed Under:

I've already posted about Isaiah Washington joining the cast of "Bionic Woman" for five episodes, and that post brought out the Washington fans and the Washington detractors in full force. Many of you say you won't watch the show after Washington's anti-gay slur, but others say he's a talented actor who should be given a second chance.

Washington's addition to the cast was, naturally a hot topic during Tuesday's "Bionic Woman" panel. (Note for title sticklers: The original 1970s show was indeed "The Bionic Woman," but the remake has dropped the "The." It's only one of many differences between the two series, which I'll get to in a second.)

First, let's talk about Washington. My former co-worker, Neal Justin of the Star Tribune, asked the producers why take the risk of casting the controversial actor. Exec producer Jason Smilovic said that he thought Washington was right for the role, and went on to say "Also, we believe in second chances. We are not here to make judgments.  ... when somebody does something wrong and you have a systematic problem, the best way to change that problem is not by casting them outside the system. It's by allowing them to make amends, allowing them to make reparations and do the right thing. So rather than excommunicate someone, we felt it was better to give him a second chance."

Smilovic was later asked a question many of you had been voicing in the Weblog comments: If Washington had been a white actor who used the N-word, would he have been forgiven? Smilovic said he couldn't answer that without being in that situation.

Later, when asked if Washington's casting was disrespectful to the gay community, Smilovic said "absolutely not." He went on to say "We are in no way making any judgments or statements or assignations about what was said or what was done. This is about making a television series."

IN NON-ISAIAH WASHINGTON NEWS...

CASTING
Washington's not the only change on "Bionic Woman." On the pilot I saw, Mae Whitman played Jaime's teenage sister, who was deaf. I liked how the two sisters related and how the character's deafness was merely taken in stride in the plot. However, Whitman is not deaf, and some objected to her casting, saying a deaf actress should have played the role. Whitman has now been replaced by Lucy Hale, her character rewritten (to be a computer hacker), and she now can hear. That's one way around a controversy, I guess. (In fairness, Smilovic says the rewrite was for plot reasons...that Jaime had originally worked in a lab, talking to chimps in sign language, and her having a deaf sister explained how she knew the language. Now her job has changed, he says, and they no longer felt the need to have that plot.)

Katee Sackoff, Starbuck on "Battlestar Galactica," plays an evil bionic woman who goes up against Jaime. Sackoff was scheduled to appear Tuesday, but didn't attend. A critic asked if this was because she didn't have a contract with the show, but Smilovic would only say (three times), that "Katee is on the show, and (she) had a scheduling conflict (today)." Hmm. OK.

NOSTALGIA-METER
Why do "Bionic Woman" when, in the 1970s, "Six Million Dollar Man" came first? Producer David Eick mentioned that Universal has plans to make Col. Steve Austin's exploits into a movie, but went on to say that Jaime's story interested them more.

Don't look for the original show's classic slo-mo running and "duh-duh-duh" sound effects. "I suppose if the tone of the show was campy or retro or somehow satirical, it would make sense to do that," said Eick. (Does this mean no Bionic Dog?)

Oscar Goldman, Jaime and Steve Austin's OSI boss, won't be around, either. Eick said the show didn't have rights to the name, but Smilovic said "The show in the '70s was the right show for that time period. The show that we are making we are hoping is going to be the right show for the 21st century."

Thanks for giving Mr. Washington another chance.
I don't agree with half the actors on TV anyway - between Charlie Sheen & his sordid past or the militant liberals - so I have no problem with Washington finding a new gig.  I always enjoyed the way he portrayed the smart Dr. Burke on Grey's, and I look forward to seeing him on Bionic Woman.
Grey's who?  I love a good second chance story.  Imagine if most of us did not get one.
I won't be watching Gray's after they let Washington go, the last few episodes were lame and having Burke leave was a huge mistake.  Wish him well on his new show, everyone should get a second chance.
Mr. Washington is a talented actor, his personal views are not relevent.  I watch TV and movies to be entertained by the characters.  If I cared about the person views of anyone in the industry, I would never watch anything made by "Hanoi Jane!"
Very happy to see that Washington has been given a second chance, he is an extremely taleneted actor, true to his craft and in a place like Hollywood where people live for 2nd, 3rd, and 15th chances for worst things and half of them people don't even own up to...it is nice to see that someone acknowledges his effort to make things right and not hold it against him from pursuing his art.  I will watch because he is now on the show...Grey's will not be the same without him!
Give the man a break. If all the stars were made everlastingly accountable for what they say or do no one would be working. He made a mistake and apologized for it. Please let his life go on and I can go on enjoying him in whatever he does because he is an excellent actor.
Bionic Woman will tank miserably with or without Mw. Washington's services. There won't be any of the fun of the original series, just another dark sci-fi series where you don't know who the good guy is and who is the bad guy. And to the execs who keep tearing my childhood memories apart by trying to "update" the old series, PLEASE STOP!!!!!!!!! Get an original idea for once.
I agree.  I am glad that they gave him a second chance.  Shame on Grey's for not doing the same.  I was very surprised when they let him go, he was a big part of the show and he will be missed.  Isaiah Washington will be a great asset to "Bionic Woman", I will definitely be watching.
Very Very Happy for Washington!!!!!!I will watch the show because of him, no more watching Grey's for me.
Oh my god, people need to get a life. It's pretend after all, so why does a character HAVE to be deaf to play one? These manufactured "controversies" just detract from everything. Sure, have your opinion, but why necessarily bow to it?
The firing of Washington was hypocritical to say the least.  They must have had other significant problems on Grey's that are not getting out.  Will be interesting to hear what the real story is.  Isiah Washington should be hired for any part he is right for.  Plenty of the "players" in Hollywood have pasts that they do not want reveled.  If they don't want to be judged, then don't do any judging!!!
I agree with and disagree with the producers statements. We are all here to make judgements on most everything in our lives. That is how we live our lives every day and those judgements/decisions are a direct reflection of our morals and education or, more tritely, our values. Secondly, do we judge Washington incapable of redemption, and if we do, based on what? Of course if someone is contrite shouldn't they get another chance? I judge Washington to be a fairly typical human, bad tempered, occasionally hair triggered and judgemental himself. I further judge him to have had some of the scales knocked from his eyes and I think that he may be on the path to doing far more than just walking the straight and narrow to stay out of trouble. An investment now in folks like him will, hopefully be an investment in us all.
Isiah needs to go back from where he came from. Wherever that is. Never to be heard from again.
"...the right show for the 21st century"?  Glad to know we have come so far as to accept the hiring of a homophobe who now, by the way, denies that he used the derogatory term towards anyone in particular.  21st century, indeed.  This show already sounds like a car wreck.  Do you think it occurred to the makers of the show that one of the biggest potential fanbases might be the lesbian community?  Not anymore.  Genius at work.
Mr. Washington seems to be a good actor, even though he may have the same paranoid homophobic attitude as the neo-Nazi Republicans.
He's not a brain surgeon...just an actor. There is no need to hire him in particular. Give the job to someone who's not bigot.
Well this has certainly brought out the intolerant personal views of many here today.
It's one thing when facts are disorted by the fans for thier own particular reasons, but when the media  after doing thier own in-depth investigation, continue to perpetrate fradulent information i.e. (T.R. Knight was not present to be called out of his name). Now if I'm wrong someone please correct me. If he didn't do the deed (face to face, Face to Over the shoulder, Face to Across the Hall) then how can so many corperations get this wrong unless there is money to be made via conflict (true or False). I even saw several individuals who stated I.W. was physical by grabbing T.R. Knight around the neck. What's up.
who cares what he said?!  Look at the goofy crap that has literally poured out of Tom Cruises yap, and people still watch his sorry attempts at movies.  Bottom line: people don't care what the actor does/says off the screen, only what they do and say on the screen.
Interesting question asked: If Washington had been a white actor who used the N-word, would he have been forgiven?
I feel this is an unfair question. Isaiah Washington likely has faced more racism all his life as a black man, than his white former co-star who hadn't even officially come out of the closet.  While no doubt there are plenty of gay and lesbians out there that are of different race. I feel that Isaiah has been treated badly in this situation. This story should have died quite some time ago. Imagine if everytime you had an arguement with a co-worker or spouse, your every word was scrutinized for any possible offensive word and then plastered all over your local newspaper. I think that the Gay Rights activists picked the wrong story to ride so hard in the press. They were and still are out to ruin a man who likely has had a harder time facing discrimination than they ever have. No one has a right to know what your sexual preference is behind closed doors, but it's pretty hard to hide that you are a person of color. Now that I have written this, I am worried that I may have not used the proper or "politically correct" terms. I am a married white mother of 2. This is my opinion and it is without prejudice.
I am very happy to see that Washington is going to be on Bionic Woman! That alone is enough for me to tune in. I admit I was not happy to see that they were trying to re-create a show that defined a generation, but with Washington involved I will be watching it! Washington is a great actor and Grays Anatomy made a huge mistake! Good luck Isaiah! You deserve a great career!
Grey's will suffer with his absense.  Dr. Burke and Cristina were my favorite story line since season 1.  Not only did they have a great story line, they are IMO, the 2 best actors on the series.

I am glad he is given a second chance and I wish him much sucess.
I am happy to hear that Washington has been casted for another show. He is a huge talent. Grey should have never let him go.  Big mistake, Big mistake, I hope they don't work on commission. I will look out for the Bionic Woman and Isiah Washington.
I disagree 100%. His personal views are very relevant... if he expresses them publicly. I believe the biggest problem facing celebrities is they are always in the public eye. Talent or not, your public actions dictate who you are to the masses. Michael Jackson, Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, Nick Nolte, Jan Michael Vincent, Britney Spears - to name a few. Are these people nice in person and just regular people, probably. But their actions in public become known hundredfold because of their celebrity. Any everyday joe would not be hung-out to dry for saying racist slurs par-se by the masses, but a TV star... you bet your life your lifestyle is relevant as is your open public opinion.
When I heard about on the Grey's set I was upset as a africian american, beacause for centuries there have been so may words that people have used in speech and written word to put the race down as a people, so I was really suprised that a educated black male would do this to us.  However listen to Mr. Washington it gave me much better insight to what his state of mind and how he was using the word. I also believe that TR Knight should have have gotten a 125K raise and profits from the show , because the comments were never directed towards him .  Also for outing himself as a gay man Perez Hilton was going to do it anyway so.
The last time I looked, we still had that pesky freedom of speech thing in the US. If everyone used politically correct speech, we would not need the constitution to protect those who don't. I hear things that offend me all the time and no one loses his or her job because of it. I think if people searched their souls, they would find that they have almost all said something in the heat of the moment that hurt or offended someone. I know that I would not like to be held accountable publicly for every single word I have ever uttered, and I promise that I do not use curse, racial, sexual-orientation, religious or slang body size/part words as a daily course of conversation. So while I feel the whole situation is unfortunate, I think there are more important things than slang words to worry about in 2007 when discussing diversity.
First of all , who cares what actors or actresses say or do in their personal lives . We are not here to get personal with these people we are here to be entertained !Secondly , Washington is a very good actor and i will not watch Greys again they spent half the season trying to prove TR Knights manhood and lost focus of what made the show successful in the first place ! Hollywood is is made up of racist, sexist , homophobic , drug abusing , greedy money hungry people! If we take it all personal we would never watch TV and or movies !
The entertainment industry is just that ENTERTAINMENT! Mr. Washington did everything they asked him to do and he still lost his job. He is an excellent actor and I pray that his life isn't affected in a negative way because of this incident.
I was very excited about the new Bionic Woman television show.  But, now after hearing that Isiah Washington was hired, I will not be watching.  My decision has nothing to do with race, it has to do with the prejudice and disregard for others that Washington showed with his comments.  As a gay male, I find his comments to be very disrespectful and shows an ignorance in him.  He should have been fired from Gray's Anatomy sooner, in the first place.
I think Washington was good on Grey's and it's unfortunate he was fired. I spoke with a very good friend of mine who is gay and he said he doesn't feel it was fair to fire Washington either. He understands that most of us have used a derogatory term to hurt or upset someone in a moment of anger. However, there seems to be more attention placed on race and sexuality. Had Mr. Washington called a fellow cast mate "fat" I doubt we would have heard much about it. If the court of public opinion wants to punish actors for discriminatory terms then it should be for ALL terms across the board. Not just a few specific ones. I wish Mr. Washington luck in his future endeavors and I'm sure this situation has taught him to think before he's speaks when upset.
Generally, an actor's personal life is of no concern to fans of their movies, films or shows.  However, when they display racist, bigoted or intolerant remarks, fans are going to be alienated.  In this case, Grey's Anatomy made the decision to let Isaiah Washington go after he said the same shameful remarks about gays for the 2nd time at an awards show later in the year.  Isaiah then said he was sorry and made the public service announcements denouncing bigotry.  It was a little too late.  When you are in a public official, or an actor -- you are subject to a higher standard because of your job.  Your job depends on public opinion.  He created the situation and got fired.  He should be forgiven and allowed to find another job as he has done, however, I am not watching another show with him in it.
Pleeeeeese.Let's get over it.If someone calls another person an idiot, they have an argument then it's over.So what if he used an anti-gay slur. How many people can honestly say they have never used a slur, whether it's gay, racist, fat, skinny, religious or whatever.  Get over it. It's just a way to bring attention to the gay movement. I'm a white, catholic, irish, redhead.  Do you know how many times I've had to listen to jokes or comments about all of what I am.  Isaiah Washington made a slip. I love George of Grey's and I'm truly sorry he's gay because I think "what a waste of good human flesh" for us females. But that's his business and what Isaiah said was wrong but I'm sure he's sorry it came out in public. Now that I've made my point. Bring Isaiah back to Grey's and George, forgiveness is a true virtue.  Let's make nice.

I always thought that Isaiah's character on Grey's was annoying and boring...I'm glad he is gone, regardless of his bigotry.  However, I do think he is pathetic as a person.  If someone would have used an ethnic slur against him...it would have been a much bigger issue.  I actually thought he should have been fired as soon as this happened.  I am not sure which is worse, the fact that he did what he did or the fact the he denied it.

I do believe in second chances, however to me a liar will always be a liar.  Maybe he is sorry for what he said, but the fact remains that he lied about it on more than one occasion.

For all you Isaiah fans...I'm glad that you will get to see him in another series (that I will not be watching).  I am even more glad that he will not be tainting Grey's any longer.
Seriously, with all that is going on in this troubled world of ours, I am disappointed that, although inappropriate, comments made by an actor can take up so much of our media time.  Believe me when I say that I do not consider myself a part of the "mass" (as indicated in a post below) so his "open mouth, insert foot" comment did not influence my opinion of gay people in the least.  The only thing his commment did was make me think how much farther we have to go as a species. His job is to entertain me, not be my morals coach.  I had great moral coaches, my parents.
Glad to see that Washington will be back in the Fall on "Bionic Woman".   I will be especially sure to watch it in the Fall.  As for Grey's Anatomy - I have no intest in watching it anymore with Burke gone.  I oppose their handling of this matter and feel that Washington's firing was totally unjustified.  Shame on you George!
isaiah washington is a great actor and deserves another chance.  i will no longer watch grey's
TR Knight, you should be ashamed of yourself for writing such a stupid comment.  If you really read into your comment, it breathes ANGER.  You should ask yourself "why am I so angry"?  Why would anyone want to wish for someone to never come back again?  You need anger managment classes in my opinion or a good therapy session.  I will think twice about watching Grey's in the Fall. Burke was the best character on the show.
I am glad that he was hired on "Bionic Woman". I think it was a HUGE mistake on the part of ABC to fire him. BTW-homosexuality is not a race, therefore a person who says or does something to ffend gays is not a racist. A bigot maybe but not a racist. People toss the "racist" word around so much they have started lumping in homosexuality in with race and ethnicity. I am a heterosexual African-American Woman. I can't ever hide, disguise or change the fact that I am African-American. My skin color could never be "in the closet".  Even if I tried to bleach my skin, got blonde extensions, blue contacts and had plastic surgery I'll still be black (Michael Jackson being the obvious exception to the rule).I could however hide, disguise or change my sexual orientation.
It's interesting that a show known, mainly, for adultery...fired him for making a slur.  That he publicly apologized for.  I like the comment that someone above made...where would most of us be in life without second...third....several chances?  Good luck to him, I'll definitely watch if it's entertaining.
This is yet another disappointment.  This is America.  What happened to freedom of speech.  I don't agree with Washington, but I can agree to disagree.  That does not mean that he is not a talented actor. Shame on the people with let him go for it and thank god for the people who have hired him.
Give me a break, if you said that in any other business environment you would be fired. Just like if you called someone fat or if you used a racial slur. Don Imus was fired as he should have been, and this man was fired as well, as he should have been. I know as a gay man that this is something that should not be tolerated as I would not expect to be given a get out of jail free card if I used any inappropriate language towards co-workers at my job. I would not expect a second chance nor would I receive one where I work. Its not about whether or not it was a gay/anti-gay remark, its about maintaining a work environment that allows everyone to feel comfortable not just those who are in a protected class.
Sorry to hear that yet another TV icon of the 70's is being "updated" for the newer, more "sophisticated" viewers of today.  The novelty and "campiness" of the original will be lost in this new version.
WOW!  I've watched I.W. on various programs and Grey's Anatomy was not one of them.  He's stepped up to the plate and proven himself time and time again.  He even took his lumps for his outburst on the set by attending rehab something I've never heard of before.  Their are not enough rehab centers to hold the number of individuals who feel what I.W. spoke about!  Koodos to the studio for giving him a second chance!
I am so glad that Isaiah Washington has been cast on this show.  He is extremely talented and I wish him nothing but the best.  We lose sight of the fact that he did not call anyone a slur.  We lose sight of the fact that it was another actor who misrepresented what happened in the October incident that has caused all of this commotion to begin with.  The one who should have been fired is TR Knight for this unconscionable play for media attention and fan support at the expense of his colleague.  Isaiah Washington deserves more than a second chance.  He deserves reparation for lies and inuendo that has cost him millions in income and the respect of the fans and entertainment media.  I will watch with pleasure every episode of the Bionic Woman and am grateful to NBC and Ben Silverman for bringing him back to the small screen.  He has apologized to the gay community and has done more than enough to make up for the entire misrepresentation and subsequent attempt to clear his name at the Golden Globes.  Good luck, Isaiah.  I am solidly in your corner.
I guess the gay community needs its own version of an Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson before there is OUTRAGE!

Seriously, Don Imus (I'm no fan) got ran out of town and he said less.  Can you imagine the OUTRAGE if a gay man had called Washington the N-word on the set?
In response to T.R...The truth will set you free, let him play a serious homosexual Dr., and lets see how well that's accepted.
It seems to be that a bigoted actor brings out the bigots in this country in support of him. This just shows how gays are the "ok" group to discriminate against. Do all of the posters believe Don Imus should have another chance? Doubt it.
Not only did hey say this word twice and physically assault Patrick Dempsey, there are reports from other sets that he has been on that he has created trouble there as well. And the coward is now blaming T.R. for this incident which the bigot himself created. What a good guy.
These producers are stupid. This show, if done properly, would have been a big hit with both gays and lesbians. I will not be watching any show this bigot is in until he becomes a man and truly apologizes and stops trying to drag T.R. into his mess of lies. Does anyone stop to think how this could have affected T.R.'s career? There is obviously still a lot of anti gay bigotry in the US and Hollywood. He could still loose a lot of roles in which he would play a "straight" actor. Bigotry is bigotry. If you are not against all of it, you are the problem.
Some "urban" males use that infamous word that Isaiah used just like they would call a lady a "b1***" and a "h0" when talking disrespectfully. He probably meant nothing too much by it and definitely wasn't thinking in the terms of being homophobic. I am sure few of us here have used that same word before. No? Fair Enough. ...I am an "aspiring" screen-writer and I even wrote a screenplay with him in mind a few years ago after seeing him in "Romeo must Die" on CableTV. He is a fantastic actor who owned up to his mistakes and made amends. Nuff said...
