What to expect when 'Jericho' returns

One of the most-anticipated panels at summer press tour, at least for me, was Thursday's "Jericho" discussion, featuring stars Skeet Ulrich, Lennie James, and Ashley Scott, and executive producer Carol Barbee. These are four people who, not that long ago, didn't expect to be here, and certainly didn't expect to be working together again. Yet thanks to persistent, dedicated fans who flooded CBS with e-mails and nuts, the show has been given a second life -- just seven episodes starting in January, but a second life nonetheless.

Barbee and the three stars were obviously very grateful to fans, perhaps a little shell-shocked (!), and willing to discuss the upcoming seven episodes, where the show plans to go, and what's next.

MAC WON'T BE BACK
Many fans were saddened by the death of Gerald McRaney's character, Mayor Johnston Green. But Barbee said McRaney's death had always been planned, in order that his son, Jake, could complete a sort of Prodigal Son arc and end up taking over for his father. Many fans had hoped against hope that the show would find a way to bring McRaney back, but it doesn't look good. His character is in fact dead, and he won't be appearing in any of the seven episodes coming up. (Should CBS dole out more than seven episodes, Barbee wouldn't rule out the chance of seeing McRaney's character, but in flashback only.)

THREE STORIES DOWN TO ONE
When Barbee hoped for a full season renewal, she and her writers had planned to combine three stories into one. They'd tell the story of Jericho, of course, but interweave them with scenes of the new Cheyenne, Wyoming government that's trying to start up, and also scenes in New York City, one of the few large cities that survived the bombings. (Viewers will remember that it was revealed early on that, thanks to New Yorkers' raised awareness of terrorism due to the Sept. 11 attacks, the city had managed to stop the bombers.)

But while the New York plot may not be seen, nor happenings in Cheyenne, the Cheyenne government will play a vital role in "Jericho." Barbee revealed that the season will begin with the Jericho-New Bern battle, and the Cheyenne government will show up to stop the fighting. The season will continue with the Cheyenners trying to help Jericho rebuild, and the town will "get back on the grid," Barbee said. Lights, power and communication will be restored. "And laundry!" chimed in Skeet Ulrich, noting that by the end of the season, the jeans his character wore could practically stand up by themselves. "We were a really smelly cast," added Lennie James.

The Cheyenne government will be "the good guys," said Barbee, but they'll also be an occupying force, and Jericho will have to deal with that issue, as well as revenge killings against and from New Bern.

Titus Welliver's character, Col. Robert Hoffman won't be back, but look for a similar character to be introduced. Sprague Grayden's Heather, however, will be returning for a few episodes.

I mentioned in my earlier post that Stanley and Mimi will get engaged, but Barbee warned that while that will happen, expect it to still have surprising elements. And she also said that much of the plot of the new episodes will revolve around "the mission that Hawkins and Jake have to do to save the world."

SOME GUY NAMED SKEET'S AT THE DOOR FOR YOU
Skeet Ulrich and cast were asked how they would thank the fans who saved the show. After a joke about Ulrich going door to door, DVDs of the first season in hand, they settled on a much more prosaic option: The cast may take out thank-you ads. (Those DVDs come out Oct. 2, by the way.)

ANOTHER RENEWAL?
The seven episodes will be shot by the end of September, so the cast and crew won't know by then if they'll get another chance after the new shows air. Barbee and her writers, then, have to write the seven shows as if they were both a stand-alone arc that could be the show's farewell, but also leave enough plotlines open and intriguing in case the network later calls for more. She says "What we're doing is we're arcing out an actual story that will have resolution, and there are personal arcs that will have resolution, but at the end of that, it will open you up to the next level so that you can see what that future would be if there's a season three, and hopefully there will be. So we hope to give you resolution, but then show you the future."

NEXT TIME, SEND STRIPPERS
One critic asked the panel if they'd have preferred something other than nuts as the fan item of choice. "Snakes," said Ulrich. "Strippers," said Lennie James. The Web site NutsOnline provided many of the nuts that were sent, and that made some of the cast think of a new money-making venture. James said cast members had joked  about starting a Web site that could mail a certain foodstuff and then slipping a reference to that food into an episode to rake in the profits. Barbee's line/foodstuff suggestion? "That's bananas!"

I am so happy that its coming back...I loved the show and I do not understand how they could of taken it off the air and keep some of these stupid reality shows on.
You know, I watched Jericho and like Jericho but that it is coming back and Veronica Mars is not is just wrong.
Jericho ROCKS!
When I heard about CBS changing it's mind my wife thought I was the one that was "Nuts".  She likes the show but was overwhelmed by my excitement.  It's like Christmas again...when your 5yrs old!  I know tonight is a rerun but that same old anticipation is already welling up inside!  Thanks CBS and everyone else who helped to bring Jericho back from the dead!!
Jericho is a great show. I am glad the "NUTS" campaign brought CBS to their senses.  I have to agree with Lynn.  I could not understand how such a good show could get taken off the air and yet stupid reality shows like Pirate Master or whatever it is called was allowed on the air at all.  Hopefully they will order a complete season after these seven episodes.
They said they will finish shooting by the end of September, but they didn't say when the new shows will air.

We want to know so we can start the countdown!
Return, that is great news!
Kevin: In the blog post, I do say "starting in January." No specific date was given, and of course that could still change.
I am so excited to hear that Jericho is coming back.  I started watching it as a fluke and eventually got to the point where I was excited for Wednesday night to come around!
I agree that there are some completely stupid shows already on, as well as coming out this fall...Geico cavemen tv show?  Seriously?
Finally a show that doesn't start with "CSI"

Can't wait until January !
Good job everyone for helping to bring back Jericho. I am proud to say I sent letters and e-mails as well. That makes the show that much more important to me, because I know I helped bring it back from the dead.
I was stunned by that discision. I thought this was actually one show that would and SHOULD get the boot.. I watched the very 1st episode and LOVED it, bragging to everyone the next day how interesting it would be, especially the plot of the escaped convicts.. But unlike LOST and any quality show that would leave you guessing for an entire Season who the convicts are, the end that plot the very next episode with a REALLY bad shoot-out ala "the A-team" where only the bad guys die.

Predictable, forgetable acting, characters you just can't get into no matter how hard you try and filmed with a budget probably less then any 70's show. Episode after episode I tried to see the value in it or get into the characters but some shows pull you in and are extremely "Smart" (like Battlestar Galactica of all shows) while other shows simply make you feel less-intellegent for watching it. Jericho was the ladder, and felt like highschool kids were writing it with no knowledge of suspense or compelling plot twists and only had their parents farm to film it on.

You have to care enough about the characters to "Live" for it to be suspenseful.. I honestly didn't care who died next because they'd probably die in a bad-acted, low budget way anyway and who would care? "Oooo did you see them kill that ARMY of 15 poorly dressed film-crew walk-ons that couldn't die more convincingly then Civil War re-enactors?? Masterfully done!" Apparently there's a LOT of fans out there that miss the Mediocrity of those poorly written, planned and low-budget 70's and 80's shows.

For the love of God.. end this show and raise the intelligence level of our National Average!
In the write up, it says the show will air in January.
Fridays are now a big night in my house also!!! When the announcement came down, it was like Christmas and I just got that shiny 2 wheeler I wanted from Santa. It was magical!!!
I'm wondering how the Cheyenne government can be the "good guys" when the finale hinted that the Director of Homeland Security, presumably part of the Cheyenne government, was responsible for the bombs that started the whole thing. Didn't he re-deploy the Cheyenne military to stop the Jericho-New Bern war so he could find Hawkins?
Good job everyone with bring Jericho back I look forward every week too. Now I just hope it's hear to stay.
"while other shows simply make you feel less-intellegent for watching it. Jericho was the ladder,"

I normally don't pick apart errors in internet posts, but if you're going to make fun of somebody's intelligence, please use the right word.
I am so happy that Jericho is coming back.... I just love all the stress they go through.. I certainly shows who you can count on when the going gets tough..
good for you ,mike of vancouver , wa.
jericho is really getting interesting !
While I totally disagree with Adam from Baltimore, his opinion is important. We need to keep this show on the air and he challenges the writers and actors to show him he is wrong about this program. I think that the writing and acting were done very well and I hope to see it become even better if that is possible. I am completely exstatic that Jericho is back in repeats and can hardly wait for the new episodes. Thank you for your article!
Since Cheney is from Wyoming...It is a safe bet to assume that the Cheyenne contingent is bad seed.  I can see Cheney starting a mess like nuking whatever he feels like nuking.  Let's hope he doesn't do it while they are passing gas to the President today :)
Thanks for the great write-up about Jericho.  How can you not connect with this cast and want to save their jobs?  Oh, and I love the show, too! :)
At our house we are celebrating the return of Jericho.  It is a show that our entire family can watch together and have thoughtful discussions about later. We are so tired of police procedurals (what's next CSI: Tuscon?) and mind-numbing reality : America's Next Inventor, Producer, Top Model, Cab Driver,  Who Thinks They Can Dance, Sing, Tell a Joke, Get a Life, et. al.  Some episodes of Jericho are better than others check out Winter's End or A.K.A which are much better than the pilot...bottom line Jericho is Different, intelligent, well-written and acted.  Long Live Jericho!
I was really upset when they cancelled Jericho.  I say "nuts" to everyone who didn't want to bring it back. What a great comeback!!!  I'll be waiting for January, and watching on Friday nights. Welcome back Jericho, you are my favorite show.

Margie
My husband and I are both doctors and I would imagine some people would think we are intelligent. We love everything about Jericho. Some times one has to be patient to see a plot develop and the actors given enough time to display the complexity of their characters. There is no doubt that this is true about Jericho. and it is infinitely more enjoyable than the more indulgant and less intelligent average tv watcher. I couldn't disagree more with the writer from Baltimore. The plot, acting, writing and the filming are all excellent.
Jerico is on my "must see" list  Love it.
Shades of Animal Farm, anyone?

Jericho's ability to entertain, and at the same time challenge the mind, makes it a multi-leveled powerhouse. This kind of show takes time to build an audience (duh!), so kudos to the fans for keeping it alive.

If the network is smart, they'll promote this show with targeted spots for various audiences: its intelligence and social commentary (i.e. "hip") the wild west flavor for post-boomers, and politically provocative for us activists.  And don't forget, above all IT'S FUN to watch the twists and turns.  Good television.

SUPPORT IT you network dunderheads!
Adam in Baltimore, when people complain about the intelligence level of our nation, they should avoid making multiple spelling, punctuation and syntax errors in their posts.
It's great to hear that Jericho is coming back. It would even be better new to hear that the idiots who planned to take it off the air have been fired. At very least I'd like to hear they were reassigned to work in the mail room.
Um, Adam?   Speaking of intelligence, it's LATTER you tard.   Jericho and its fans are pleased that you are not one of us. You represent all that is wrong with tv viewers today, and have proven are point far better than I could have.  Thanks.
Personally I wouldn't mind if Skeet came to my door to thank me! :)
Jericho rules...There is a god, and us the fans should be proud that we convinced a network to leave something that we like to watch.  We should have this power on every show on tv, and i would say good bye to reality tv and hello to more shows like jericho...We have the power to change tv for the better, let us not stop at just one show.......dave
There have been many shows over the years that got the axe too early (Remember "Dark Angel" anyone?) and all the fan support to get the show back on the air went for naught!  So glad it for once finally worked with the TV execs, especially with such a fun and intriguing show like Jericho.
tuned in by fluke...but I'm thankful to those who saved it.
I'm glad that Jericho is returning for another season; however, I really thought the plot was getting too confusing and overwhelming with the many storylines. Also, I did not find the entire fighting another city all that entertaining - I believe there should have been more focus on the stroyline Robert Hawkins was involved with. I was really interested in his secrets, what more he knew, etc.
Jericho is GREAT !!!...Now tell me more about the what's & why's of the nuclear attack ??? WHO dropped in the aid ???
SEVEN episodes is NOT ENOUGH !!!
I'm so glad that Jericho will be back on,I'm so sick of all these reality shows that are all the same. Small town america is missing from the every day lives,to see people working together to survive is incredible. It is the what if question, could we relearn how to survive if we didn't have groceries stores to buy our food.
I ditto Shauna's statement... Watched the first episode on a Friday night a couple of weeks ago and then watched the rest of the episodes on the web.  Thanks to those who fought to keep the show on air.  I'll join in on the next round!
This is the best Show on Television. I love it, the concept, idea, completion. It is wonderful. It is also very scary sometimes, the reality. It also gives useful tips. Anyway, I love Jericho and Skeet isn't bad to look either.
Jericho is a great show.  I was shocked when I heard it was not coming back on.  Now I am so pleased that they have given it a second chance.  It is one of the best shows on TV.  I just hope they will do a full season, not stop with just 7. Great going on bringing it back.
Considering that the scenerio is entirely possible in real life...I find the show very interesting !!!
My husband and I were VERY disappointed when we heard that the network was cancelling the show. Then we saw what Nutsonline was doing and we signed a petetion online to keep the show. We are excited to see the shows return and hope that after the first 7 NEW shows they keep it coming!  Comeon January!!

Go Jerico.   I really enjoyed watching it and looked forward to seeing it each week.   I felt like a part of me died when they took it off the air, and in the middle of a battle, no less!  I am grateful that it will be back for the seven seasons and hope for many more after that
I know this show was geared to the younger crowd, but I am 51 and really love this show.  Thanks to everyone who helped with emails, phone calls, letters, etc. for bringing this show back.
Jericho is awesome!  Down with reality bs shows!

Yeah Jericho! It was so great to be a part of the group that fought to bring this show back. And to those who think the story line wasn't believable....do you not ever pull your head out of the sand and try to figure out what is ACTUALLY possible in our world at this time? If you did, you would realize just how many pieces of this show make perfect sense. I can't wait for it to come back on and I'm loving watching the first season again :-)
Message to all who fought to keep Jerico on the air.  I fought for it also and I still can't believe CBS actually heard us.  I didn't think any one cared what we thougt.  If they truly cared they would get rid of all the reality shows and put more good programming on like Jerico.  Being a loyal fan I and I know you will keep on fighting to keep it on.  Nuts and I'm proud of all of us.
There use to be only one show I watched on a regular basis... that was LOST. Jericho became one of those family shows for me. I cried when it was cancelled and rejoiced when I heard of its return.
I cannot wait to see it - and I am glad to get the other episodes but I wish it was a full season.
Jericho rocks and my fiance and I are glad it is back.  And, yes we don't need another CSI show, but we like those as well.  I am just glad it's not "So You Think You Should Be a Star and Nobody Else Does" reality garbage.  I think I heard it was a caveman movie, but maybe it is a t.v. show.  As long as they aren't trying to be ballroom dancers, it might be okay. And, by the way, it's Tucson not Tuscon, Jackie of Odenton, MD.  And, where is Odenton?  How big is it?  I am sure there would be a CSI: Tucson before there would ever be one from Odenton.  But stanger things have happened.  Does anyone else think the Nielsen ratings should be abolished, along with the electoral vote and they should listen to the people instead?
