HEYYYYY YOOOOU GUUUUUYS! "Electric Company' to return

I mentioned the lovely and talented Rita Moreno (she's won an Emmy, an Oscar, a Grammy AND a Tony) in my post about her show, "Cane," being canceled.

But one of her old shows has found new life. I grew up in the 1970s, and I think I loved "Electric Company" even more than "Sesame Street," "Mister Rogers," "Captain Kangaroo" and "ZOOM" all put together. (At last summer's TV Critics' summer press tour, one of my colleagues went up to Moreno and simply said "Thank you for teaching me to read.")

Anyway, this week, the New York Times is reporting that "The Electric Company" is returning to PBS and has already started shooting in New York. Moreno has apparently been offered a cameo.

The show is reportedly a mix of the old show and new elements. It will debut in January.

"Electric Company" fans, join me in the comments: What sketches and recurring characters do you recall most fondly? Should they be resurrected for the new show?

Off the top of my head:

  • The Short Circus. What little girl didn't want to be Julie?
  • Letterman. Ripping a G from his varsity sweater..."
  • Easy Reader, although Morgan Freeman's pay has gone up quite a bit since those days
  • Spider-Man. "Where are you coming from, Spider-Man? Nobody knows who you are!" As a kid, though, it bugged me that he did not talk.
  • Jennifer of the Jungle. How fun did vine-swinging look?
  • Love Of Chair. To this day I cannot hear the name "Naomi" without wanting to ask, "But what about Naomi?"

I've purchased the DVD set and can relive the old show until the new one comes along (as can my daughter, when she's old enough). But the one sketch that always gave me creeps and still does? The Monolith sketches, nodding to "2001." Sailed over this little kid's head.

The nearly clueless Fargo North, Decoder (the wonderful Skip Hinnant).
Bill Cosby's Supperman sketch.
Fargo North, Decoder!
I loved the Monolith. And the Director (oh, poor Morgan Freeman holding that cue card, before he got his God voice). And the Blue Beetle! "I would if I could, but I can't, so I won't."
Cool! I can't wait. PS Welcome back Gael!

Just aaaaaadd siiilent EEeeeeee!

Ah, the brilliant Lehrer! I still use this song to teach our homeschool group a very important, sometimes confusing, rule. They get to make up their own verses. You should see them scrambling around looking for rhyming silent e words!
What about those wonderful Tom Leher(sp) songs.  Now you have me singing "Silent E."
I liked Morgan Freeman in his easy reader role. Too bad he won't do a cameo on the show. He has such a kind and reassuring presence. My children certainly like him and my second child like Electric Company best of all the childrens shows.
The Bloodhound Gang!!!  "Whenever there's trouble, we're there on the double...we're the bloodhound gang!"
Was the Bloodhound Gang on The Elctric Company (Whenever there's trouble, we're there on the Double. We're the Bloodhoung Gang!)? I loved that and thought it was on TEC - maybe not though
I had the Fargo North Decoder boardgame!  I wonder how much that would be worth today... It was a fun game too.
I believe The Bloodhound Gang was on the show "3-2-1 Contact".
I believe The Bloodhound Gang was on '321 Contact.'
Oh, I wish we'd get more 'Love of Chair' but I guess they'd have to call it something else?
What about 'Vegetable Soup'???  I am eating some right now as I read this article... Bette Midler as the spoon, talking about healthy food?!?!  They should take elements from 321 Contact, Zoom and Vegetable Soup and incorporate them all... I was such a public TV kid!!!
How about the verb to adverb song?
/You enter a really dark room/
/And standing there in the gloom/
/Is Draaaaccuuuulaaaaaaaa How do you say 'bye-bye'?/
Immediately
Immediately
Immediate...L-Y
When I knock on a door and someone on the other side asks "Who is it?" I still have to say, "It's the plumber...I've come to fix the sink!" My husband still laughs everytime! Our kids think we're nuts! Spiderman was always great too!
Oh right... 3-2-1 Contact! Another great show from my childhood. Thanks :-)
That scene in the movie was so violent. It reminded me of Jim Crow days when white men would kill black men in the dark alley
I learned English with the Electric Company...I'm so happy to hear it's coming back.  Hope my kids enjoy it as much as I did...
I am so excited for my four-year-old (not to mention myself)! We own the four-disc "best of" DVD set, and I can't tear her away from it. If I let her, she would watch it for two or three hours a day.

She absolutely *LOVES* the plumber joke, not to mention the door-to-door salesman selling brooms: "Do you want to buy a broom?" Woman: "No. I do not want to buy a broom." Salesman: "Do you want to buy TWO brooms?"

We can hardly wait for this wonderful show to return. Now, if they would only create another show about math skills like "Square One" (featuring Yeardley Smith, voice of Lisa Simpson).
Anyone remember Dangerous Dan?
All I remember was a guy with a scratchy voice singing "Dangerous Dan" over and over while they were showing a guy (I think his name was Chip) holding handlebars up high and wearing sunglasses and a leather jacket like he was Peter Fonda in Easy Rider.  When the camera moves back he's riding around in circles on a giant tricycle.  It was hilarious!
I remember the songs "We Are the Kids Known as Whimper and Whine" and "Today is My Favorite Day".  I loved that show!
