Are you still 'Lost'? Readers have questions

Filed Under:

After yesterday's two-hour "Lost" finale, are you feeling satisfied that viewers were finally given some answers? Or are you still raging against the creators for inventing more new questions than they answer?

Those readers who wrote in to comment on the finale were fairly evenly split. Some of you loved the finale and are looking forward to a new season in which the Oceanic Six will presumably grapple with whether they need to re-find the now-lost-again island...and whether anyone else can be saved.

Others feel that the show has started to live up to its title, as in, the fans are "Lost." One reader said that the minute viewers were shown life off the island, some of the show's magic died. And reader Sandy was even more blunt, saying "Are the writers on drugs? Show has become annoying rather than entertainment. Season after season, it goes nowhere, but into 'captions', and 'flashbacks'. I seriously doubt I will tune in next season."

Msnbc.com contributor Ree Hines, who's covered "Lost" for us all season, makes many good points in her analysis of the show. But she can't possibly answer all of your questions, and neither can I.

I'm going to pull some of the most interesting questions you raised and print them here. "Lost" viewers are smart folks (they have to be...) and I'm hoping some of you can jump in, via the comments, and provide answers -- or at least speculation. I'll number the questions so you can offer answers more easily

It's going to be a looooong summer...

YOUR QUESTIONS

1) OCTAGON COMMERCIAL
"Did anyone follow up on the Octagon thing? [Editor's Note: ad recruiting employees for the Octagon Corporation...Dharma of course has an octagonal logo.]"    --Bells

2) SAWYER-KATE
"What did Sawyer whisper to Kate? Did it have anything to do with returning to the island?"    --Julie

3) SAYID-HURLEY
"What was Sayid doing before he found Hurley? How did he know where Hurley was? Where is Sayid taking Hurley?"    --Julie

4) SMOKE MONSTER
What about the Black Cloud by the way?  --Mike

5) JIN-MICHAEL
"Did Jin and Michael survive? How will they treat the Island and the O6?"    --John

6) DHARMA VIDEOS
"Why do the VHS tapes from the Dharma stations still work when they've been exposed to electromagnetic energy?"    --Chris

7) JEREMY BENTHAM-LOCKE
"C
ouldn't figure out who Jeremy Bentham is. He supposedly died, and we are (I think) led to believe that Bentham is the one laid out in the coffin that Jack opens toward the end of the finale. But we see John Locke's body inside the coffin? Is Locke Bentham or is this another mystery for next season?"    --Margaret

8) MOVING THE ISLAND
"Where did the island go? Did it go into the future or into the past? We assume that when Ben "moved" the island, it didn't really move except that it moved in time. How many times has the island been moved in this manner?"    --Gary

9) CLAIRE
"Where is Claire? Are Claire, Jack and Locke siblings? No one knows who (Locke's) dad is, but I think that it is Christian."    --Anonymous

10) RAFT
"I seem to remember that, when the island disappeared, there was a raft full of people halfway between the it and the freighter, which had, of course, blown up. What do you suppose happened to them?"    --Rageed

In order to make Christian Sheperd daddy to Locke one has to really look at the ages of these two men. I can see Christian being daddy to Claire and Jack, not Locke, however one never knows.  As far as Jin and Michael, I believe they will end up alive, one may be burned a little, but they will survive.  Also, Sun and an expedition is going back to the island.
And let's not forget the creature that killed the pilot by dragging him out of the cockpit in the first? second? episode. What happened to the "creature" that was russling through the forest a la Jurassic Park when they first started setting up camp?
Sawyer wants Kate to find Cassidy, more than likely to apologize.

Sayid is the one that killed John Locke (aka Jeremy Bentham) ... who, more than likely, was the "Economist" trying to have Ben killed, while Ben was trying to have the "Economist" killed, so he can return to the island.

"Smokey" has been there a long, long time.  Ben only knows how to summon, not control.

Jin survives.  Michael does not.  Michael had tried to kill himself several times following his departure from the island, all unsuccessful.  Christian finally tells him he can "go" - as the boat explodes around him.

The island moves 3 years into the future, yet another location.
#3 question-Hurley's arrest was shown on tv and with the "fame" of the Oceanic 6, it's probably something that was followed (Walt and Jack also knew where he was)
#9 Wasn't Locke's dad the guy who pushed him out the window after taking his kidney? The guy he had Sawyer kill on the island.
The island moved not in distance but in time. Remember the conversation between Ben and Locke underground about the bunny appearing to disappear but was still there but in another time. I think the island is where it always was but it exists at a different time. Also, remember earlier how a body washed up on shore but the same person was still on the boat.

I think the island moved back in time to a point before the boat blew up and maybe before Claire disappeared, I think this is how some characters will return to the show.
I believe Sawyer asks Kate to look up his daughter Clementine and her Mom, Cassidy.

John Locke assumed the name Jeremy Bentham when off the island. Just like Ben had false identities when he "traveled".
The island moved before, that explains how the Black Rock appeared in the middle of the island, can you imagine the surprise of the the sailors when an island appeared under their ship out of nowhere?
Get Lost. I gave up on the show after the 1st 2 episodes this year. I'd been an avid fan up till then.
The use of the names "John Locke" and "Jeremy Benthem" (both British philosophers of Utilitarianism) must be some sort of inside joke with the creators of 'Lost.'

Remember, Google is your friend.
If Locke is Jeremy Bentham, then why do Jack, Kate and others refer to him as Jeremy Bentham and not John Locke.  It would be strange for them to use his alias to refer to him when they were completely alone.
they already told us what happened with the island. It's all about the "time travelling bunny."
How did Locke(& ben) get off the island? I assumed Locke wanted to stay forever. The guy with the others
who shot'RAMBO' & welcomed Locke to the Others camp
never ages, he was there when Locke was born, I think he is the devil & everyone is in hell or purgatory.
Jin definitly survives...there was a flash forward in a previous episode showing Jin buying a panda bear for his boss's new born
I can't believe people are so out of sorts with what is now known as a "cliff hanger". Personally I thought it was great. I am glad that they took the time last season to add some dimension into the characters...now they can do so much more with them. But to be so bent out of shape over the fact that there are questions left unanswered and new ones to boot...I think people forget that the show doesn't end for another two season or so (kinda lost count after the writers strike). So plan on a lot more being unanswered and probably more grand "WTF's" thrown at us so that when the SERIES winds up it will have an epic ending. I think they have done a very good job in making it clear that this is a continuous story and not just one detached episode after another.
Regarding question 9... We know exactly who Locke's father is. He went by many names, but he was the person who took Locke's kidney, who threw Locke out the window, who conned Sawyer's parents (Sawyer killed him if you recall) and so forth.
Anyone notice that Locke's "name" Bentham contains the name BEN?
1)OCTAGON commercial has to do with COMICON coming up. The producers, Lindeloff  and Cuse, usually have a panel discussion during the convention in past years.

2) In an episode this season, Jack gets mad at Kate in a flash-forward because she did something, (what? she won't tell him) because Sawyer had  asked her to. I personally think it had something to do with contacting Sawyer's child.

7) During the finale, Jeremy Bentham was refered to as not being the person's real name.  When Hurley started to say Bentham's real name to Sayid, Sayid warned him that someone may be listening-it wasn't safe to reveal his true identity.  Jack and Kate both refer to visits from Bentham in which he tells them they must return to the island. This sounds just like something Locke would be doing in the future if he wasn't living happily-ever-after with his island.

9) Claire and Jack are siblings according to several episodes. Locke seems to be the closer in age to Christian than to be his child. My own speculation is that Richard Alpert is Locke's father.
Why did Locke leave the Island with a different name Jeremy Bentham, who is also a philosopher what is the link with all of the philosphers names????? Locke, Rousso???
1. Didn't notice the commercial. Another online 'experience' perhaps?

2. Sawyer asks Kate to help with his daughter somehow. She admitted to Jack this season she was doing a favor for him. Sawyer really has no other interest off-island (except maybe Kate).

3. It is unclear whether Sayid is still working for Ben or not at this point. We can assume the guy he killed outside the mental institute was a Widmore henchman. Maybe Sayid felt Hugo was in danger by Widmore? Maybe all of the 6 are.

4. The island's defense mechanism. I think it's kind of like a rabid dog that can see into your soul.

5. I think Michael is dead and Jin is alive. Whoever may have lived on the freighter must be picked up by Faraday's raft.

6. Beta?

7. When Locke got off the island he must have taken on an alias to protect the island.

8. Who knows. Not enough information to make a good guess.

9. Claire is with Jacob. Jacob seems to be interested in her, or at least separating her from her baby. Maybe Aaron needed to be off the island for his own safety or something?

10. Faraday's raft. Sun says to Widmore in a FF that the 6 were not the only one's who got off the island. Maybe the ppl in Faraday's raft are who she is referring to.
I agree Locke is too old to be the son of Christian.  Both Locke and Ben have moms named Emily, a young Emily giving birth to John in the '50's, an older Emily giving birth to Ben in the '60's Dharma era - I think the Emilys are one and the same, therefore Ben and Locke are (half) brothers.

If you watch season one again, you can't help but notice the actors have aged some in the four real-time years the series has spanned, so next season will probably catch up by jumping to the same time period the Six are in (with flashbacks to the horrible things that happened when the island moved) - and I think the island was physically moved, as different time periods wouldn't effect the physical location.

As for Jin and Michael - well, nobody connected to the island seems to really "die", so John will probably come back to life back on the island, where we all know the Six will end up back on.  I think the raft people moved with the island, so we'll see more of the freighter scientist-geeks, including apparent island native Charlotte, and Dan Faraday, who knew what "the orchid" was, as well as ghost whispering Miles, who cracks me up, especially sparring with Rose.

I think this season has been great and did what the writers said they would do - answered lots of questions, but not all (who and where is Jacob? Where is Claire and what is Christian's connection?) then of course raised new ones to make us want to come back.
Are people paying attention?  Is Christian Locke's father?  Of course not.  Is Jeremy Bentham Locke's alias?  Of course.  Did what Sawyer whisper to Kate have anything to do with returning to the island?  Of course not.
There are several legitimate questions to ask about this show, but if you can't keep up, stop complaining.  No wonder so much of television is dumbed down; it seems half the viewing public isn't able to keep up when we get intelligent fare.
I can absolutely, with total honesty, state I have never watched this show. And for God's sake who cares about it. Just another cultural cowpie.
And what happen to the polar bear that Sawyer killed on the island in the second (?) episode? Noooo explanation.....
I must have missed a couple of things along the way...who is Cassidy?
And I thought that guy Locke gave a kidney to was his father?
1)Not yet-- in my chewing over everything, I forgot. :)

2)My theory is that Sawyer asked Kate to keep an eye on his daughter, Clementine.

9)Yes, we do know who Locke's father is-- Anthony Cooper, kidney-stealer/Locke-pusher/con man extraordinaire.
I agree, once you kept showing the characters off the island the magic was "lost".
Ben tells Locke that those who move the island don't come back....yea right!
uh...anonymous we know who Locke's dad is. He's the one that conned the kindney out of him.Literally. Claire and Jack are related but not to Locke.
ARE YOU PEOPLE FOR REAL WITH THOSE QUESTIONS/COMPLAINTS?

1.  Locke's father has been a recurring character since season 2!  Sawyer killed him late last season because he was the same con man whow caused his father to kill his mother and then himself while Sawyer watched.  He also tricked Locke into giving him his kidney and also pushed out of a 20 storey window, causing him to become paralyzed.

2.  What Sawyer whispered to Kate was whatever he asked her to do for him, which she told Jack about in a flash forward a few episodes back.  What he said exactly is another mystery but it is probably for her to take care of his daughter for him.

3. Before Sayid went to Hurley he was a hitman for Ben, killing Charles Whidmore's people.  We've known this since the second or third episode of the season.  However, three years have passed since they "got off the island" so we will see what happened in that time frame over the next two seasons.

You people obviously do not watch the show enough to call yourself fans!  Some of those questions are absolutely ridiculous and as I've proven, the answers have already been provided to us long ago!  Go back and watch the DVDs and PAY ATTENTION!!!  And for goodness sakes, just enjoy the show and stop complaining about not having every single question answered right away.  If they were to answer all your questions there would be no story left to tell.  It's called LOST and it dramatic mystery, not a sitcom!  It has two seasons left and then your questions will be answered.  If all you can do is complain rather than enjoy the brilliance of this show then just stop watching and certainly stop referring to yourselves as "fans"!
Here is a question that I have been wondering about. When the O6 do get rescued from the island they land on, one of the first things to happen would be to give them all a physical. Wouldn't a doctor know how old the scar on Jack's stomach is and the that the wound  was not from the plane crash but from a surgery?
sayid was killin off ppl involved with widmore. they gotta go back. does that mean desmond has to go back also.claire is probably dead.seeing she came to kate in a dream.  does walt have to back to the island to. why did he only visit hurley.
Locke's dad who pushed him out the window and Sawyer's dad are the same man played by Kevin Tighe. Anthony Cooper is the character name. This man is the one Locke asked Sawyer to kill in that brig on the island. He brought the body to Locke to take to Ben.

Lostpedia has more on Anthony Cooper and the others.
I think Jeremy is Locke's assumed "name" when he returns from the island, just like Ben uses a fake name (we saw that on HIS return when he checked into the hotel). I don't think Michael survives. He was right there when the bomb went off, but in this show, you never know. He just might have jumped before the bomb went off. Jin may have survived by jumping from the boat. But where does he swim to? He could have made it to the raft (considering Sawyer made it to the island by swimming). I think the raft made it to the island before it disappeared. (If it didn't, it's sad to think that Rose and Bernard are dead...) I'm pretty sure the island moved into another time. We learned about smokey somewhat 2 episodes ago. WHAT it is we don't know, HOW it is summoned we pretty well know (it's was indicated 3 seasons ago to be a "security system" for the barracks as well as Ben's summoning of it after Alex was killed). I don't think Sayid killed Jeremy/Locke... Ben stated they ALL had to return to the island including Locke/Jeremy even though he is dead. I don't think he would kill Locke or have him killed if that were the case. Remember, the ending at the funeral home is three years in the future. Who knows WHAT Locke/Jeremy might have learned and done in that time.
apparently you can volunteer to work for the Dharma Initiative at www.octagonglobalrecruiting.com
OCTAGON COMMERCIAL
1) That was kind of weird about the Octagon corporation that would be a nice twist for sure.

2) We are not going to know what Sawyer said to Kate until next season.  We know that Kate did do something for him when she got off the island but they never said what.

3) Sayid is working with Ben and i'm sure Ben still has a grip of cash somehow to be able to do the things he has been doing.  They've been off the island for what seems to be about 3 years in the flash forward so Sayid and Ben have been working together to stop Whitmore from finding out anything about the island.

4) SMOKE MONSTER?  Who knows, all we know that it is an ancient force that can be unleashed but not controlled.

5) JIN-MICHAEL
I don't think either of them survived the explosion. Maybe JIN did and was picked up by the crew left in the little boat.

6) DHARMA VIDEOS
This was a dumb question.  Don't get that deep.

7) JEREMY BENTHAM-LOCKE
Bentham is Locke.  If Ben was able to come to and from the island before I'm sure Locke can do it now.  It's just an alias he was using so he would not be known from being on the plane.  Thats why they don't say his real name.  side note...  The body in the casket didn't have a scar over his right eye.  I think Locke and Ben are working together to try and get the oceanic 6 back to the island.  The body is a fake...

8) MOVING THE ISLAND
I agree that the island was moved in time not actually moved to another location.  But there was the polar bear bones in the desert so we know it has been moved before.  Unless thats where the island spits you out when you leave it.  Ben tellaported to the desert when he moved the island.  Maybe who ever moved it before had a polar bear near by that got sucked through the portal as well.

9) CLAIRE
Locke's dad is the dude he had Sawyer kill last year.  I don't understand the whole Claire situation.  If she's not dead then maybe she was just chosen to stay like Locke.

10) RAFT
who knows what happened to them.  They either got sucked up in the time warp with the island or they died.  Some of the people on the boat were also people from flight 815.  I think they were pulled in with the island.  If not they would have seen the helicopter crash and went over to help.
Further speculation: I think Kate made the decision to go back, thus the apology to Aaron after the dream. I think Sawyer whispered to Kate a task he made her promise to do... the very thing Kate was caught doing by Jack when they were engaged and broke up. (And by the way, the scene with Jin giving the Panda to his boss' new born was a flashBACK because in the scene he's not even married to Sun yet.)
rachel: jin buying the panda was a flashback, shown at the same time as the flashforward showing sun giving birth. it was a gift ON BEHALF OF his boss, to some other influential person we can assume was chinese because of the symbolism of the panda.

monique: what happened to the polar bear that sawyer shot? it probably started to smell bad, being dead and all, so they avoided it.
Sawyer whispered to Kate something about his daughter Clementine.
I'm sure it has to do with the money he had put in a bank account for her...remember.  That's what Kate was doing in the flash forward where Jack asks her where she'd been and she replies she had to do something for a friend.
Lockes father was killed on the island.  It had to be his biological father because he was a perfect match for a kidney donation.  So Locke is not a sibling to Jack and Claire.  Claire and Jakc have the same father, Christian. Sawyer asked Kate to find his ex-girlfriend and baby she had with him.  He left her earlier when she first found out she was pregnant.  Sayid knew where Hurley was because Ben told him.  Ben knows a lot of things and it working with Sayid.  Everyone on the ship were spirited away by Christian before it blew up.  So Jin and Michael are alive but who knows where.  Remember, right before it blew up Christian told Michael, "It's time to go now".  Bentham is Locke.  He is trying to get them to return to the island. Claire is with Christian.
I think Michaela nd jin are dead- Jin getting the bear for his boss was inthe past or was it? what kind of story will they have to make up? I think it is too far fetchedbut I guess people believe them-I think sawyer tells kate to watch for his daughter- the ending might explain where the polar bear came from!
Most of those questions we don't have answers to.  However everyone should know that Locke took on a new name because no one can find out about what really happened to him and I am sure that Charles Widemore would be after him just as he was after Ben.  Locke is obviously not related to Claire and Jack,  we have seen his father and his mother and we know that was his father because of the kidney transplant episode.
Also a big question is, why do people believe the Oceanic 6 if they said they found the bodies of every single passenger in the "plane wreck"?
Above someone mentioned they thought Locke and Ben have the same mother "Emily".  Remember that when Ben was born, his mother died.  In flashbacks many episodes ago we saw Locke with his Mother (an older women)when he was looking for his father that later took is kidney with false pretenses.

Just becase Claire appeard to Kate in a dream does not mean she is dead.. it was a dream.  My theory is Kate dreamed it to give herslef reason as to why not to return to the island.

I think Jin survied and has amnesia because of the flash forward when he is buying a gift for his boss wife or daughter when she had a baby.  We was ask if he was married and he said no.
What happened to the sickness? Desmond had it. The guy on the boat died from it.
What will happen in the future:

Jack and Ben will get married, with Sayid as the best man.

Kate will realize Aaron is really Sawyer reborn in some sort of time warp wormhole only the island can produce, hence her loyalty to him.

Locke is a frankenstein of DNA from strange people in the past, and was grown in a test tube. He has identity crisis issues, obviously. And he likes collecting knives, for some unknown reason.

Jin was chucked into the air when the boat exploded and was caught mid-air by the weird electromagnetic force of the time-hopping island, transporting him to the Orchid. Sun goes back because he knows he is alive.

The people on the raft? They're writing on this blog RIGHT now. Freaky huh? The magic of wireless...

All the people who died are telling Hurley to just stop it already.

Penny and Desmond go find another island and start a leper colony. The helicopter pilot airlifts them from a secret military base.

Charles Whitmore is the 13th Apostle.

Julianne opens a pre-natal clinic on the island, gently comforting mothers who give birth on the island, that they, too, will die. Sawyer fulfills these dying women their last wishes by emerging from the frothy rhytyhm of the tides in a Brad Pitt-ish sort of way by walking onto sandy beaches with no shirt and a 5 o'clock shadow. (Insert lust here.)

Charlotte discovers she too was grown in a test tube, her genes mutated to produce a perfect British Accent the show was sorely missing.

The Ghost Whisperer? He got cast as a mutant in X-Men 4. (Which is a shame - more could have been done with him.)
well what ever is going on I still want to know about the giant foot with four toes . I could careless about everything else. It IS THE WHOLE SHOW FOR ME!!!!If the answer to this "mystery" is crummy, I will as I have been doing, ween myself off of TV forever;I was born in 1956
What I want to know is, was anybody else checking out Jack's man-boobs during the finale, and were they evidence of an island induced feminization process that we've all overlooked?  Locke was sporting a set as well.  Are the guys becoming chicks?  and vice versa?  Kate's been looking a bit more buffed.  And Ben was definitely wearing rouge in the final scene.  Is this the direction of the next season?
Some of the above viewers are seriously confused if these are the questions that they are asking - you all need to "watch it again".  For the record, Michael is dead.  The actor playing him confirmed this in a recent interview.  Thanks for the unintentionally hilarious comments...
The island is in some way displaced in space/time, so the move isn't too hard to accept.  It's how Penelope's boat was simultaneously both hovering around the island's coordinates without actually being there, and then the boat was there after the island "moved".  When the island space shifted away, it left only the normal space and the people in it.

Great show, great kicker at the season finale!  Will definitely be looking forward to the next season and some DVD's!
My questions: where is Tom Friendly now? He was also off the island and visited Michael (and maybe Walt). Am I forgetting what happened to him in that episode? Wasn't there a hint of his (and Michael's) immortality?

For the record, though there are a bunch of rabbit trails on this show, I LOVE it. It's like life, nothing ever ties up nice and clean.
