Get out of my head! Annoyingly addictive ads

Filed Under:

I'm hearing a rumor that it's summer, though you couldn't tell it from the temperatures where I am (while people in other parts of the nation are melting, we here in Seattle are putting on sweaters). But let's go with the rumor for now and kick off our annual summer TV Commercial Contest, now in its fifth year.

You may know the drill, but here are the rules, same as last year.  I bring up topics and mention certain ads, but you're just as much a part of the game as I am.  Post about your favorite and least favorite ads in the blog comments, and suggest topics that we can riff on.

Eventually, I'll name the best and the worst ad of the year, as determined by your emails, your blog comments, and other feedback. I may or may not utilize online polls, but this has backfired -- I've received some nasty mail from people who believe the winner of an online poll should also win the overall contest. I take polls into consideration of course, but they can be tampered with, so it's not automatic that poll winner=contest winner. Readers who can't deal with that should repeat to themselves, it's just a show, I should really just relax.

The basic ground rules are here. I won't repeat them, but will add that the 2007 winners are ineligible this year. The Skittles milking man commercial (featuring the late David Groh) won (!) for worst, and the PetSmart puppy passing down his favorite toy won for best. Watch video of both ads here.

And now, on with the show.

GET THIS AD OUT OF MY HEAD!
First topic: Earworm ads, those commercials that annoy the heck out of you, but manage to stick in your head anyway. (Readers will argue that this means the ad is doing its job. I argue back that isn't the case if the company is perceived in a negative way. We argue on. It is an argument that never ends.)

APPLY DIRECTLY TO YOUR...OH, FORGET IT
The classic earworm ad is probably the one for Head On! It won for Worst Ad in 2006, so it can't win again, but that doesn't mean we can't discuss it, and its legion of spin-offs and parodies. The sheer repetitiveness of the ad earned it a place in ad history, if on the negative side.

WHEN 'FREE' COSTS $15 A MONTH
But the earworm ad series that's been running through my head in 2008 is the one from FreeCreditReport.com. You know the series. There's a likable young goof playing with his band in a crowded apartment, or driving a junky car, or serving in a restaurant dressed as a pirate. In each one, the kid sings about how he wouldn't be in this predicament if he'd only known what his credit report said about him.

This ad series annoys me on so many levels. First off, as our consumer expert, Bob Sullivan, points out: Credit reports can indeed be had for free, but not from these folks. They'll charge you $14.95 a month if you sign up and don't cancel within seven days. How is that "free"?

It really bothers me that companies can represent themselves this way, fooling people who perhaps don't have a lot of money to begin with. As you see from the hundreds of comments on Bob's post, many people were indeed fooled, and they're irate about it.

That said, I'm also bothered by the fact that the ad is so darn catchy. You are probably humming it right now..."they say a man should always dress for the job he wants...then why I am dressed up like a pirate, in this restaurant?" In that particular ad, it was apparently due to the balladeer's identity being stolen. Or, you know, maybe that $15 a month from NOT FreeCreditReport.com put him over the edge.

I LOVE THE WHOLE WORLD/AND ALL ITS CRAZINESS
I have to close with one earworm ad that I actually like. I've mentioned it already this year, but it's kind of a palate-cleanser after some of the negative earworm ads. It's this sweet ad for the Discovery Channel that features stars from the network's various shows singing about things they love, from Egyptian kings to real dirty things. Boom-di-ada, Boom-di-ada, boom-di-ada, boom-di-ada.

What other ads are sticking in your head, and why? Start sharing them in the comments.

UPDATE: Check out Allison Linn's Ads of the Weird blog for another annoyingly addictive ad, this one with dancing cartoons of underweight babies. Yikes!

The impersonator guy who's doing the spots for Direct TV.  I don't know who he is but enough is enough!!!
There ain't no bugs on me.
There ain't no bugs on me.
There may be bugs on some of you mugs,
But there ain't no bugs on me.

My husband and I love this K9 Advantix Flea/Tick commercial. We rewind the Tivo to watch it and sing our pup's name instead of "me."

My #2 favorite commercial is the Washington State Lottery commercial where they attach penguins, a rooster, and what looks like an emu to hanggliders. The motto is something like "All birds should fly." I swear this commercial brings tears to my eyes.
It was just mentioned above, but ANY of the FreeCreditReport.com ads.  I've had, "F-R-E-E, that spells "free," Credit Report dot com, baby" going through my head since my first cup of coffee this morning.  Someone please make it stop!
the ads that are sticking in my head besides the free credit .com one is the one with the glade plug ins and the cartoon animals doing housework and the fiber one commericals.
"there ain't no bugs on me" might be another one, sincerely bugging me and really sticking in my head all day long. And speaking of sticking, this really annoying commercial for "plasters" that stick on with nice antibiotics within them, at first annoying because the kids promoting the strips are not enunciating, then just simply annoying because it just sticks to my brain.
I agree with you about the NOT Free-Credit-Report-dot-com commercials.  Irritating as hell.  And, thanks a lot for putting the tune in my head!!!

Also, I cannot stand to watch / listen to any ad featuring Billy Mays (or however you spell his last name).  He's the one who sells Ka-Boom! and a number of other household cleaning products (and, I think, some sort of glue product).  His voice is extremely irritating - mostly because he screams!  I immediately hit the MUTE button when a commercial of his comes on.  His voice is actually the earworm.  I can hear him screaming now, right along with Free Credit Report ...  AAGGHHH!!!  My ears!! My ears!!

I LOVE the Discovery channel commercial!! I have it set as my phones ringtone.  It never gets old.  I vote it #1 already.
I can't stand the freecreditreport.com ads. my 8 year sings them constantly. i finally get it out of my head and then he starts singing it again. swear that song has been in my head for weeks now. out of the three, the car one is the best. but still annoying.
There's a beautiful spot running for the Washington State Lottery.  It involves hang gliding, flightless birds, and a soulful soundtrack that makes this commercial spot one of the most enjoyable I've ever seen.  I'm actually disappointed every time it ends.
Favorite commercial: Dairy Queen's new waffle cone commercial in which the dad asks the son to say a specific word if he wants a bite of his ice cream - the son says it, dad is shocked, mom jabs dad for not being able to spell it, and the kid laughs such a great laugh.  So cute!!  Worst commercial: Whatever company has the pregnancy test commercial showing a stream of pee hitting the testing stick.  So classy!  NOT!!!
Worst? No doubt, the PedEgg. Makes me never want to eat grated cheese again.
Love the Geico one with Joan Rivers.  "I CAN'T FEEL MY FACE!!!"  The fellow almost cracking up makes the commercial.
HATE - Sally Field's friend "who has to set aside time each month" to take her pill. Good lord, what does she do with the rest of the month?
LOVE - The Oreo cookie eating father and son on laptops in different time zones. I'll stop what I'm doing for that one.
Free Credit Report.com is the best even my 2 year old grandson can sing it, false advertising? not really- nothing in life is free but hey they sure are cute guys!
Best commercials:  The Advantix from a couple of years ago with the dog sent to camp & writing home:  "hello mother, hello father, fleas, ticks mosquitos, really bother; thanks for the package ..."
Worst:  The stupid 5, 5 dollar, 5 dollar footlong Subway commercial.  What the heck!
Free Credit Report is pretty darn good; and I do happen to like the insurance with the gal & Mrs. Butterworth:  "Oh dear!  Someone's put a logo across my face ... !"  Pretty good!
I love the Discovery Channel ads because I remember having to sing that song in elementary school. "I love the mountains, I love the rolling hills...etc."  My husband and kids looked at me funny when I heard it the first time and started singing along.  It was one of those, "What...you never learned that song in school?" moments.

And I have to say my kids' and my favorite Ear-Worm ads are the Truth.org ones.  Mostly the "It must've been a typo, a typo, a typo" ones.  The underweight baby ones are a little freaky but still catchy.
I hate the commercials that feature "Bob" who used a certain pill to treat his "man problem." There is whistling in the background and lots of innuendos about how much better his sex life is. I don't remember the name of the product, but the song being whistled sticks in my head. The Santa one is the worst- and it's still playing in June. Bob's got a sackful of pride! It's awful!!!
The Pediasure commercial with the very particular child. "I don't think I like Waffles." I say this often during daily conversation.
Have you seen the ad for the pregnacy test, where it starts with a close up of the pregnancy test and you hear the announcer say, "and now introducing, the last stick, you'll ever pee on," then proceeds to show a stream of water landing on the test. Its hilarious.
BEST... yeah, there may be bugs on some of you mugs, but there ain't no bugs on me... (imagine four 40-something siblings singing this in kiddie voices at the table on mother's day!)
WORST... that Hispanic-themed cable commercial - those stereotyped images deseve major flaming... also, the sinus medicine commercial that shows people's heads blowing up like balloons - freaks me out...
The very worst insult to my intelligence if I have any are Sonic ads-they are sooooo stupid.
the best commerical has to be the McDonald McNuggets with the 2 guys out front rapping.. i swear i say "Ketchup and mayo.. mcnuggets mcnuggets yo..." everyday... too friggin funny
I love the ad with Shaq on the race horse for Vitamin Water.  Love the look on his face in the "photo finish".
I DON'T VOTE, I MUTE !
I know this is an old one so it is not elligible for this year but I loved the commercials with Tiger Woods and his club head cover for Nike golf clubs.  The funniest one I saw I could only find on the internet when Tiger was trying to put "Frank" on the newest driver with a big head.  "Get me an epidural!!"
I love the Micheal Bay commercial "Awesome" for Fios, umm I think, well I guess it isn't that great if I don't remember what he is selling, it is still Awesome!  I like the Meatloaf Go phone as well.  Freecreditreport.com is nice and catchy.  Still hate the Charmin bears.
One of the better ones (until I get tired of it) is Flo for progressive insurance, Worst Geico with the celebrities. The lizzard is cute
Any ad for the ED products are simply disgusting, not to mention embarrassing. Men who need such prodcuts certainly can speak to their Dr.s for information. They have NO place being on TV. (Not to mention, that those "of a certain age" who may want these products, are proabaly not making love in bath tubs on beaches or in their kitchens.
The Subway "Five Dollar Footlongs" jingle should be classified as torture! It runs about 10 times each morning during my local news broadcast, which guarantees that it will be stuck in my head ALL day. On the other hand, I love the Discovery Channel "Boom-di-yada" ads. And not just because Mike Rowe sings part of the song...I think we all need to be reminded of the good things about our world every so often.
AAARRRGGGHHH!!! That OXY clean screamer guy!
SHUT UP! already.
The Fiber-Mialgia Woman MUST BE SILENCED!
Just listened to the Discovery Channel ad for the first time and I really like it.  I think the song "boom di ata" might become a new word in our slang vocabulary like "bling". Great song.  In the free credit report ad in the restaurant, the gray-haired lady in the booth is someone from another ad.  Which one?
One of the funniest ones I've ever seen was the FedEx superbowl ad from 2006, where this caveman is using a bird to mail his package but it keeps getting eaten by a dinosaur. He goes to his "boss" who wanted the package delivered, and the boss asks him (in hysterical caveman language with subtitles) if he used FedEx. When he says "No", the boss fires him, and as the depressed caveman walks outside, he's stomped on by a huge dinosaur foot.

I also love the freecreditreport.com ads. They should do a movie or a show with those guys: they're hysterical! Or maybe they could have a "parody" band, ala Jack Black's Tenacious D.
My absolute least favorite ads are from Hardee's for their burgers.  You can hear the people eating... loudly.  If I wanted to hear someone chewing with their mouth open, I'd turn the volume down and listen to my kids.

My favorite ads are the "I love the whole world" ads on Discovery.  My kids know all the words and we're big enough dorks that we went to YouTube to find them so we could watch them whenever we wanted.  I also like that Discovery is scaling them back.  They've shortened and re-edited them so they don't really have a chance to wear thin on the viewer.
Aye, I cant believe no one has mentioned the VW add for the pre-owned certified cars where the wife confronts the dealer. That woman is FRIGHTENING looking. I know I am no model, but everytime I see her on my TV I smile knowing that I am a beauty queen compared to that woman. And her "Look at it Tom, it's a new car" and her condescending look add to my hatred of that ad.

On the other hand I love the "Rock Me Gently" sing along with the guy driving with all the forest animals. I love the WTF? look on his face when the wolf eats the bird.
My favorite commercial this year was the Farmer's Insurance commercial where the guy discovers his car has been stolen in a bizarre dream-like sequence that includes a barking cat, among other oddities.

My family really likes the one with the flea saying "wow!",

I absolutely can't stand the "Viva Viagra" commercials....  Advantix's "There Ain't no Bugs on Me" needs to go, too. Ugh.
Optimum's Triple Play commercial with the reggaeton song...Not only does it show like 10 latin stereotypes, but its also a terrible song!...I can honestly recite half the song
Optimum Online, So fast so fine
For $29.95, you can sign the label

Eight SevenSeven, ThreeNine Three
Four Four Four Eiiiiiight
I LOVE the ad for Petco where "Rosco" is in his mommy's bed all comfy and cozy. She enters the house and yells his name, he jumps up and runs to his little bed on the floor and curls up in it like he was there all the time.
those cable commercials with 877 393 444-8 it is the worst song ever and it is always on. I love the car commercial with Derek Jeter pretending to be just a car salesman and the little boy can't believe it's not Derek Jeter- and when Derek catches they keys and the boy says are you sure you're not a shortstop?? The kid is so cute!!
I love the Progressive commercial where the man and wife go up to the counter and she is handing him "plolicies" and asking what they need them for.  Then the cashier says "SURPRISE" and the wife is annoyed.  My family and I laugh at that EVERY time.
How about Tahiti Village ads?  The ads promises free stays like a "high roller" but fails to mention that you will have to fight your way through an intense, hard-sell, one-call-close marketing scheme to entice people to buy time-shares with complicated usage and hidden costs.
Worst commercial are the Carl's Juniors commercials. They show people who eat like pigs! Stuff drips out of the hamburgers, people lick their fingers, etc... I wouldn't eat at a Carl's if it were the last place on earth.

Terminix commerical that show the bugs coming out of the George Washington dollar is disgusting.

Love the Freecreditreport.com singing commercials, especially the one with the boys dressed like Pirates.

Love the new State Farm Insurance commerical with the bridegroom with the stinky futon. The bridegroom looks like he's 12 years old.

My absolute favorite commerical, and a tear-jerker, is the Pedigree Dog Food commerical that shows dogs in the pound. Part of the commercial goes "I know I'm a good dog, I just don't know why I'm here." The commercials show these dogs in cages and you just want to cry then run out to the nearest animal shelter and adopt every animal in the place.
I love the Discovery Channel ad too.  Everytime it comes on I will stop what I'm doing to watch.  It's like a "pick-me-up" commercial, a 30 second happy break.

The one I really can't stand is that one with the woman with the bladder control problem that has to make friends with the "ladies room" door plack in order to get the courage up to speak to her doctor  about her problem.  Lameness.
I HATE the ad for Mentos Gum where the woman 'drinks' from the man's mouth! This tops the Skittles 'milking-sour-man' commercial by far. Close second is "Eat Cheetos if you are a jerk" ads.
Hate the six flags commercials with a guy's face popping in to count flags on a flag fun-meter.
I am actually a fan of the Freecreditreport.com ads.  I like the guy who is singing and his "posse" is funny.  The other thing I appreciate is the fact that they came up with ORIGINAL jingles and didn't resurrect some old song (a major pet-peeve of mine). It is annoying how it will stick in your head though.
Also, did they actually make a new "Viva Viagra" commercial or is it just another version of the old one?  It's enough to make me boycott the Golf Channel!
why..Why..WHY??? has no one mentioned the FREAKIN' ANNOYING "HI, WELCOME TO PROGRESSIVE DOT COM" commercials. Between them and the God awful Geico Gecko..It's a wonder I still have a little ("snarf"!) sanity.. And previous poster is right WILFORD MUST DIE!!! To bad some shyster law group can't get a class action suit against the mental and emotiional damage these idiotic commercials have caused.. IF YOU OR A LOVED ONE HAS BEEN BEEN KILLED,KILLED OTHERS,OR HAS BEEN CONFINED TO A MENTAL INSTITUTION BECAUSE OF......etc, etc.. CONTACT THE LAW FIRM OF DEWEY, CHEATUM & HOWE....
Worst: The ad for the Ped Egg Foot File, a product used to "buff" callouses & dead skin off your feet. A graphic (yuck!), low budget, poorly produced and downright disgusting commercial.  Check it out on their website. www.pedegg.com

Best:  Pest control(Orkin?)ad with a giant termite attempting to deliver pizza and to case the target house.  "Can I put it on the table?" The Orkin man as the bug "cop" who keeps the neighborhood safe.
My favorite ad this year is the Planter's ad with the unibrow redheaded ugly "girl" who is turning heads and attracting men due to her beauty regimen which consists of rubbing Planter's nuts (cashews?) on her wrists and behind her ears (and between her, uh, breasts... uggh!).  My favorite part is where the guy is blindly following her across the street, and gets tagged by a bus!  Hilarious!  Seriously, ROTFLOL!!!
