Ads we like: War kittens and Mr. Bill

Can it be? Are there enough TV commercials out there that we actually like to merit a discussion? It's so easy to slam the bad ads, but harder to remember the few good ones.

We've already praised the Discovery Channel ad (but I keep mentioning it, because it gives me an excuse to go watch it again). It epitomizes so much of what we like about any good ad. Some ads are funny, some beautiful, some educational, some make you say "aww." But rarely will a good ad gross you out, or make you feel worse about the world, or make you feel smug or cynical.

Many of the best ads are almost mini-movies. They tell a story, but somehow manage to work the product being sold in to the plot -- in an almost unobtrusive way. Last year's winner, in which a big dog passed down his favorite toy to a new puppy (and then was taken to PetSmart to replace it), is a perfect example.

One new ad that hasn't yet been mentioned in the comments is the Mr. Bill for MasterCard commercial. Maybe I'm just a sucker for the old "SNL" skits featuring Mr. Bill, the clay figure who gets smashed around while yelling "Ohhh nooooo," but I think the ad is a smart resurrection of an old favorite character. In the end, Mr. Bill ends up flat on a bus windshield, is thrilled to find the bus is on time, and then gets wiped out by the windshield wiper. I can't help it, I laugh. As the ad says, "priceless."

Keep on sharing your favorite, and least favorite ads, in the comments. Coming up next: Ads that split the audience. Some of you love them, but for others, they're like fingernails on a chalkboard.

More ads you like:

KELLY! KELLY MOORE!
"I really love the AT&T spots where the people don't have enough bars and their alter egos are talking to us about them not receiving their calls. My favorite is the dad knocking on cars trying to find his daughter."  --Cindy
[Editor's Note: I love the one where the guy isn't going to find out about Motorhead tickets because he doesn't get a cell signal in his favorite bar, where he's playing pool.]

ROCK ME GENTLY
"The other one that we loved this year was the Jeep commercial where the guy is singing in the car ("Ain't it good, ain't it right...") and a squirrel falls in and joins along. Then come the birds, and the wolf. The wolf eats a bird and the guy driving the car just gives him 'the look.' The wolf spits the bird back out and everyone keeps singing. It gets us laughing and singing along every time. In fact, my 7-year-old has it on DVR and has to watch it every so often. Something about that commercial just works for us!"    --Amy

ANTIDISESTABLISHMENTARIANISM AND SOFT SERVE
"Anyone seen the Dairy Queen ad with the mother, father and baby?  The father agrees to give the baby the rest of his sundae if the baby can say 'antidisestablishmentarianism.'  The baby says it and the dad remarks that he should have made the baby spell it.  The mother says to the dad, 'You can't even spell it!' and the baby laughs at him!  Really funny!"  --D

DIRTY WORDS ARE IN THE MOUTH OF THE BEHOLDER
"I don't know if this commercial counts, but I LOVE the Orbitz gum commercial where the lady busts into the guy's office with the box full of convertible bits and they're all yelling at each other but not swearing; 'What the French toast?' 'Who are you calling a cootie queen you lint licker?' 'Pickle you kumquat.'    --Katie

WAR KITTENS
"I love the ad for personalized credit cards that is set in a 'Star Wars'-like hangar where the guy in the long cloak says he wants kittens on his card and his sidekick utters my favorite line: 'WAR kittens?' Just cracks me up every time."  --Lenora

THE SLOWSKYS
"The Slowskys --  those turtles who prefer DSL over cable Internet because they like things to be slow. The guy turtle has a real attitude about everything and it's pretty entertaining, especially when he yells at his wife."    --Dave

PAY IT FORWARD
"I love those (Liberty Mutual) insurance commercials where people are doing good things for strangers Pay it forward."    --Jessica

I LOVE the car commerical where the couple is looking at the car and the alarm goes off every time they start to step close to it and then in the upper section of the dealership the owner of the car and the sales guy are standing there and the sales guy says "we can show them another car" and the owner says "this is more fun" and keeps doing it.
I love the California Happy Cows commercials - especially the one where they are trying to teach the yoga duck to say "Moo" instead of "Omm" and the one with the rooster when the one cow tells the other to "Hit the snooze" and the rooster comes hurtling out the barn door. My favorite version of the "no bars' commercials is the one in Hong Kong where the business rep calls the client "Mr. Stinky Fish Face" because his boss couldn't get through to him to tell him the proper Japanese pronunciation of the client's name.
I am stunned not to see the FreeCreditReport.com commercials here!!!  Those jingles are so catchy and get stuck in your head.  I can't wait for them to make another one!
One of my favorite commercials is (I think) the E-Trade baby commercial. It debuted during the Super Bowl with a baby throwing up after buying a stock, then he made so much they hired booboo the clown. They just came up with a new one where he has a blackberry and his "girl" is calling him. Just the voice and the laid back manner in which he speaks cracks me up.
It must be my contrary nature but I actually can't stand the Mr. Bill commercial.  I either fast forward or mute it.  It annoys me.  I'm also in the minority as far as the commercial that I like.  I think the "most advanced piece of technology you'll ever pee on" is actually pretty funny.  The one I do have to agree on and really love is the Liberty Mutual.  That one is just lovely.
I don't know if anyone has mentioned the V8 commercials where the person gets popped in the forehead for not eating their vegetables. The new one with the dog under the table is hilarious http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjD3YZ6REpM
AFLAC duck commercials are always great- love the one where the duck is driving the NASCAR and leaving feathers all over the track!
I also disagree with the Mr. Bill ads, maybe it was before my time.  But the new Burgur King steakhouse burger (or whatever its called) ad is hilarious!  I love it!  And there is a new Sonic ad with two girls drinking shakes, one says to the other "You want some fries with that shake?" - "Yeah, fries sound great, order some" - "No, I mean, you want some fries with that shake...".  Maybe a regional commercial, but its great!
The cellphone commercial with Meatloaf and his family singing that rock opera. I wish all my family discussions included wind machines and flash bombs.
The Motorhead ticket guy is definately my favorite right now.  He reminds me of Jack Black playing air guitar on his pool stick!
I love the Illinois Lottery ads featuring a "pro-wrestler" who moves in with a family. Too funny! Sorry but I still like the Horde ads for Capital One. I miss them.
Have you seen the new Huggies commercial where the man is changing the little boy's diaper?  Everytime he tries to remove the diaper, it's like a fire hose shooting everywhere, so he ends up leaving the diaper on.  Hilarious!
Back around tax season, there was an ad where a woman was waiting at a bus stop.  A man comes up behind her and asks if she knows what time it is, and she FREAKS out "yes, I know it's tax time!"  It made me laugh out loud!
One that makes me smile every time is the (I think) Cingular commercial with the rollover minutes.  The Mom finds them in the garbage, then confronts the rest of the family about who threw them away ("they're perfectly good minutes").  The look between the Dad & the kids is priceless.
I don't drink, but I love the Keystone Beeer comercial where this hot girl comes up to a Joe Schmoe and is talking to him.  He feels pretty cool until he finds out she's got one of those blasted bluetooth phones that go in your ear.  Later while waiting in line to buy his beer she apologizes; but he finds out she's still on her phone talking to someone else.  It's always funny when you can laugh at someone else knowing you've been there before.
I agree that the E-Trade ads are very funny.  I like the one with the guy buying a Hong Kong stock and saying "that's China!" and the Baby who rents the clown, but underestimates the creepyness factor.  They make me laugh everytime.
My husband likes the etrade commercials with the baby.  My favorite commercial and I haven't seen it much is for Tide(?) where this guy is at a job interview and the interviewer is trying to listen to him but there's this annoying voice talking over him.  Turns out it's a stain on his shirt that's making the noise and distracting the interviewer.  I also like the "ain't no bugs on me" puppy.  I sing that to my daughter sometimes in the car if she's having a bad day.
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Beer commercials where they take away the "High Life."  "I'm going to go out and smell me a hot dog or something"

What I don't like is the Genuine Draft commercials where they try to find someone "genuine" who admits he got too much change, or helps get a cell phone back to someone who lost it.

The implied reference that only men are genuine grates on me.  Or maybe they think only men like beer.
Washington State Lottery. Hands down winner, no questions asked. Someone emailed it to me and I cried.  How could an ad company come up with something so simple, so brilliant, so real and so magical?  It's the perfect use of lotttery winnings in my opinion, helping birds to fly who don't fly.  There may never be another commercial so cool, so emotional for me ever.
Shayna, I agree with you.  I cannot STAND the stupid Mr. Bill commercials.  That commercial has GOT to go.
I think i mentioned this on another thread, but I just love LOVE the talking stain commerical! Where the guy is in an interview and is describing his impressive qualifications, but each time he opens his mouth to say something, the coffee stain on his shirt starts screaming nonsense really loudly. I love the expression on the bosses face as he stare at the yammering stain! For those who didn't get it the first time...Appearance does matter, you overeducated knucklehead!
I like the one for a tire company that has a car bearing down on some poor squirl that starts to scream, then flashes to other aninmals/wife screaming as the driver yanks the wheel and misses.  The grasshopper gets me every time
Ok, I haven't had time to read through all these so I don't know if this has been mentioned or not, but I LOVE the cereal commercial where the dog brings his owner breakfast in bed just so he'll get up and leave so the dog can get in the bed!  If my dog could figure out how to do that I'm pretty sure she'd do it every day! lol
I like the ad where all of those people are humming. I think it's for Lipton tea.  I Can't stand the slowsky's commercials though. Actually almost any comcast commercial is bad
I love the bud light commercials that have the special abilities that come with drinking the beer. My favorite has to be the one that gives the ability to talk to animals and the dog just keeps saying "sausages, sausages, SAUSAGE!" I laugh so hard when the commercial comes on.
BEST AD - Honda and the gas pump which either locks the doors, flattens the tire or the best, turns on wipers and ups radio volume.

WORST AD - ANYTHING COMCAST I'm tired of being treated like I'm a moron. Just bad advertising.
War kittens! I love that one, too. It's actually one of the only "What's in your wallet" commercials that doesn't annoy me.
I was just coming here to write about the Mr. Bill ad.  LOVE IT!!!  I also love the rubber ducky ad mentioned above.  I can't believe Petsmart has not given us another cute ad lately.
I love the War Kittens one as well, really funny.  Never saw the one with Alice Cooper and Richard Simmons, wish I had!!   My all time favorite one was a few years ago, and I think it was for a sterio system, can't remember the name now.  But the guy is driving in a car, singing to "Another one bites the dust", there are ladies in another car next to him and he is just cruising and singing and flirting witht he girls, and then the camera pans out and he is the driver of a hearse in a funeral procession.  You just didn't see that coming, that's what made it so funny.  I only saw it a few times and I think they yanked it due to people complaining about it being in bad taste.  Some people just have no sense of humor
I like the one with Meatloaf and Tiffany as the parents singing their cell phone version of "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" -- glad to see Meatloaf step out of retirement for something this crazy!
I love the DVR commercial where I can fast forward through all the *&$$# till i get to where my show left off. its the best!
Discovery ads... brilliant.
The Red Robin ( I think) ad.. guy puts on the headset thingy, thinks he has a hamburger in his hands and suddenly jumps out of the chair yelling: MONKEY!! MONKEY WANTS MY BURGER!!
OMG... I about peed myself!!!
I like the ad where the couple's hotel is undergoing construction and everytime he tried to talk to his wife, the construction sounds block him out.  Too bad I can't remember if its hotels.com, travelocity, priceline...
To Andrea C:
There is also a new Etrade commercial, which is my new fave.
The baby is talking and his cell phone tells him he has a text message and he reads it and says, "Oh you bad girl" or something to that extent then his phone rings and he answers and says, "Hey girl, can I hit ya back" Very funny!
Love the Pepsi "What is Love" commercials. Everytime I see it I start bopping my head

Love the Lincoln Mercury commercials (You've got to put Mercury on your list). There's something about that girl that I never get tired of watching.

Love the War Kittens commercial

I do love the Mac/PC commercials especially the one where PC is doing yoga.

LOVE all the Pedigree dog food commericals. Most are heartbreakingly touching.

Love the commericals for an insurance company that show the dogs with their heads out the car windows. Sarge is my favorite.

Love the KFC commercial where the family and their young guest are sitting down to dinner and the young guest calls the mom by her first name "Nancy" and she corrects him. The look on the young man's face is so funny.

Love the Embarq commercial with Mr Tinkles, the cat. Hate the one with the muttonhead floppy-armed man.

HATE ALL OF THE BILLY MAYS COMMERCIALS.. That man scares me.

Hate the Etrade baby.

Hate all of the Burger King commercials. And especially hate the Carl's Jr/Hardee's commercials. Those people eat like pigs.

I don't like the Quizno commercial that has the young lady eating the $5 bill. She does this really ugly thing with her mouth. AND, what the heck is she saying to the sandwich before she eats it??? This chick is creepy

The Cialis ads are annoying. Why the heck are people sitting in bathtubs in the middle of fields and forests?

I'm not sure if the ads for Sonic are shown all over the U.S. but those are just plain wacky and hilarious. They are like the Seinfeld of ads. Plus, they have a new ad every 2 weeks or so, so I'm always waiting to see what goofy/wacky thing the characters will say next. Also, there's a bran cereal commercial..not sure which brand...but it involves a dog which makes its owner breakfast in bed and gets him out of the house only to get under the covers for a nap...soooo cute :)
We don't have TV so all these are new to me--what fun!
I love the Boom-Di-yada ads and the Free credit report and Subway ads are both incredibly catchy.

I do not see the appeal of the eTrade baby at all. It's gross and creepy. I hate talking babies--I really didn't like the baby Bob ads from a few years back, either.

And the Washington Lottery is cool but why would the birds care about flying if they aren't meant to fly? I would think they'd be freaked out by it. But the little penguin does seem happy.
Speaking of ads we like - How about the Mastercard commercial with the little kids doing the robot to Give Up the Funk by Parliment?  "Backpack - $20, Being with people who understand you - priceless." It aired around back to school time last year so I don't think it was discussed during last year's contest.  I love, love, love this ad and so does everyone else I've shown it to.  And being with people who understand you IS priceless.
My current favorite is the commercial with the little boy throwing a baseball in the air and trying to hit it.  Each time before he tries to hit it, he says "I'm the greatest hitter in the world!" and each time he misses it and he says "Strike one." "Strike two."  After "strike three", he stops and has this lightbulb moment and says "I'm the greatest PITCHER in the world!"  I don't even know what the commercial is advertising, but we rewound it and watched it three times.  Very cute.
The Toyota mini-van ads spoofing the old Calvin Klein ads are a hoot. You know, a sexy couple shot in sepia tones. CK was for Obsession, I think. Just replace the perfume with a Toyota Sienna. You know you want to.
Everybody seems to love that Jeep commercial but I have a little problem with the premise. I don't know about you, but as soon as that squirl lands I'm pullin' over. That squril's got to go!!

I like that bud light commercial with the ability to talk to animals. "Sausages! Sausage! Give me Sausage!"  I know that's what my dogs would be saying.
What about the Huggies commercial?  Where the dad loosens the baby boy's diaper and there is a .. er, flood!  We have three boys - who are all out of diapers now, but that one cracks us up EVERYTIME!!!

ps, Frank from DE - the commercials are the only thing entertaining on TV anymore :)
A casino in MN runs some great ads about your luck being better at their casino than the current situation your in. One ad has a scrawny little guy, playing pool in a bar, challenging the big, biker dude to a "dance-off" because the biker dude keeps hitting his pool cue when he walks by. My fav of the series was the young guy in a Ford Escort wagon, challenging the police car next to him at a stop sign, to a drag race. Sadly, that young actor, Chase Korte, was killed by a drunk driver. That particular ad isn't shown anymore.
I'd missed the Jeep commercial. Thanks for the link. That is now my favorite new commercial.

Another commercial that is running again this year is the Corel dishware ad with the models on the greased runway. I never fail to get a laugh out the blonde squealing and disappearing from the screen, to be seen again rubbing her bottom, while the rest of the models pile up behind her, trying to avoid slipping too.

Hated Mr. Bill spots on SNL, so I'm glad not to have seen the commercial. Yuck.
The best ads recently were the GMC ads during the NBA finals. This guy is a "talker" to the players as they enter the parking garage. You never see who he is talking to but this guy's enthusiasm and "right-on" jive is perfect--"I know you got your game-face on, go on. Remember everybody likes jewelry."
The Pepsi Max ad that does a send-up of "A Night at the Roxbury" or more accurately, SNL's clips of Will Ferrell and Chris Kattan as the two cheesy nightclub guys who bob their heads incessantly to "What is Love". I love that they show different people and celebrities in different places and situations all doing the head-bob funk- the best is at the end where Chris Kattan walks past two girls doing it and yells "Stop it!"
I love the DQ "antidisestablishitarianism" ad!!  It's cute and it doesn't make me immediately want to mute the ads OR stop buying their product (I no longer eat at Sonic or Burger King as a result of their ads).

Can't stand the e-Trade baby ads.
Completely hilarious ad with the Talking Stain by Tide...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgtfC5LBAW4

That and the ETrade baby throw up ad and of course the AT&T Kelly Moore! are among my favorites right now.
I HATE the DQ add where the 10 year-old girl smiles at the dorky boy. He sends her a sundae.  "It's too easy." She tells her mother, who looks horrified.  No, dear, you're too easy.  Your mother needs to stop that kind of behavior or you'll end up a poll dancer before you get out of Jr. High.
You can't say the Discovery Channel commercial is great without seeing the Washington State Lottery commercial--it's simply brilliant. I watch it every day from my desk, and I stop whatever I'm doing when it comes on TV. This isn't even in the same league as the commercials listed in this article. Some talking baby at Dairy Queen?? Not exactly bringing tears to my eyes here...

Here's a higher-quality version of the commercial on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7M1BfHQIST0
