Mike Myers: The antifunny?

Editor's note: It's finally happening! The Entertainment staff is turning Test Pattern into a group Weblog, meaning editors Paige Newman, Kurt Schlosser, Anna Chan and Denise Hazlick will be popping in and posting entries along with longtime Test Pattern blogger Gael Fashingbauer Cooper. A line under the headline of each post will tell you who wrote what. We're also planning to change the blog's name to indicate that television issues aren't the only topic of discussion, but that may take a while. Thanks for reading, and we hope you enjoy our group effort.

Mike Myers’ latest comedy, “The Love Guru,” was a train wreck with both critics and fans. It came in fourth at the box office, earning a mere $14 million. Deadline Hollywood Daily’s Nikki Finke reported that an unnamed studio executive summed up the situation with the one-syllable, “Ugh.”

Not everyone's ready to love "The Love Guru."

"Guru" also scored a paltry 15 percent "fresh" rating with critics on RottenTomatoes.com, and a 23 on MetaCritic.com. New York Times critic A.O. Scott wrote, “The ‘Love Guru’ is downright antifunny, an experience that makes you wonder if you’ll ever laugh again.” And Slate.com’s Dana Stevens called it “the most joy-draining 88 minutes I've ever spent outside a hospital waiting room.”

When I see reviews this scathing, my first reaction is to laugh. Positive reviews can be so dull to read, but a really awful one can be downright gleeful.

And it’s honestly a bit hard to like Mike Myers. A recent Entertainment Weekly interview painted him as a control freak who, the magazine alleges, was jealous of Dana Carvey during the “Wayne’s World” era (Carvey denies the claim). EW quoted one unnamed executive who said, “I honestly root against him.”

When Myers appeared on “The Daily Show,” the comedian seemed genuinely upset that Jon Stewart didn’t let him set up the unfunny clip of his film. There’s something so cloying about Myers these days — it’s as if he thinks if he repeats a joke often enough, he will wear down the audience into laughing. And his kind of movie — the silly, based-on-a-skit type — seems slightly archaic in the post-“Superbad,” “Knocked Up” world, which feature characters who feel real.

But maybe I’m being unfair. I’m not the projected audience for a Myers movie. I did not run out and see “The Love Guru.” Though I’ve seen both “Wayne’s World” films and two of the “Austin Powers” movies, for me he belongs in the same tries-too-hard, grating camp that Robin Williams and Will Ferrell inhabit. But, I do wonder, do his fans even still love Myers?

Did you see the “The Love Guru”? Did you like it? Were you ever a Myers fan? And if so, are you still? Would you want another “Austin Powers” film or another “Wayne’s World” (which Myers is reportedly in talks to do)? Am I totally off base about Myers? Convince me I’m wrong and, heck, I may even sentence myself to watch “Guru.”

Mike Meyers is the new Eddie Murphy.  Peaked early with success from SNL and now his ego won't allow him to consider being anything less than the top billed name in a movie.  I doubt either have ever  considered being a supporting character in a movie.

It's all about having their name above the title.

Truly great actors take any parts, big or small and make them memorable.

There's no reason he can't be a supporting character in a good movie... except for maybe his ego.

Mike, relax and let others carry the weight of a film for a while.  You're too tense (why are comedians so damn serious anyway)
Myers is such a creative genius!  I mean, how did he come up with the novel idea of making fun of an East Indian accent?  Brilliant.......NOT!
I can't get enough of those Shrek movies. Poop jokes, and uh  poop jokes and uh...yeah stuff like that. Do more of those.
I have to admit he has lost some of his charm. The old Mike Meyers was definitely funnier with what I feel was more original humor. I still think he can be funny though. He has provided me with many laughs over the years so, I wish him well and hope he bounces back.
Comedy is hard.  Making movies is hard.  Though some of the best art is done when the artist is struggling and passionate about showing the world what they can do.  Once an artist becomes successful that desperate need to succeed squelches some of the creativity.  There isn't a need to pay rent or eat.  In Mike Meyers case, he doesn't have to work, so it's like he's just playing around in his yard - which happens to be a major motion picture set that costs tens of thousands of dollars a day to run.  He's a funny guy but perhaps his time could be better used coming up with an alternative energy source.  Where's Dr. Evil when you need him?
Hey Give Mike Myers a break. He is still a good actor. I found the movie funny...at times. He's a star. I like him...and I did spend $10.50 at the movies only because it was Mike Myers ohh and Verne Troyer.
let's stop for a moment and end this Mike Myers bashing, all talents  miss once in a while and this may be Mike's turn.He may just have to regroup.so enjoy the movies.

Wow, one bad movie and it's time to jump on him eh?

Can any of you folks do any better?

Anyone ever written a script and acted in a feature length movie?

Oh you haven't? Hmmmm! Interesting.

What famous actor hasn't made a bomb of a movie in their career? Lighten up!
My wife and I left before it was half over.  Enough said.
Why is it that everyone thinks that "Knocked Up" and "Superbad" are funny as well?  These are the most ridiculous pieces of garbage to hit the screen in a long time, yet people eat them up.  Teens throwing a bunch of F-bombs is the whole premise of Superbad...does that mean every high school in the country is hilarious?

We have a ton of high school girls getting knocked up because "Juno" did it and that movie was pushed as "cool" by critics with an agenda.  Doesn't that movie teach us that every high school girl can accomplish everything as long as she's mouthy and full of trivial knowledge?  Mike Myers isn't funny but at least he isn't pushing anything other than poor attempts at humor.
I wouldn't call doing The Poochie movie proactive as much as confronting a valid new paridgm of synergy.
Hey Elsa, Mike Meyers is NOT an artist, he is an entertainer. Art is displyed in a museum, movies are shown in a theater. If Meyers wants me to shell out $10 for a ticket, another $10 for popcorn and wash it down with a $10 Coke, he better bring something better than this! Artists make peanuts, Meyers has made MILLIONS! If they can't continue to make a quality product, then I, as a consumer can and will voice my displeasure over it. Are you listening Eddie "hasn't made a funny movie in over a decade" Murphy. You know, you guys can turn a script down you know, you don't have to make every piece of crap film that lands on your desk!
i never liked the Wayne's World sketches or the movies & the first Austin Powers movie was barely funny (then after a second viewing--totally un-funny).  but here's the weird thing:  i like Mike Meyers when he does sketches (funny ones, that is).  actually, when i think about it, the only funny sketch he did was "Sprockets"--the german, minimalism, black clad, Dieter.  hilarious!  otherwise, he tries way to hard & i agree with the comentator who says he blames Jim Carey.

Meyers, Adam Sandler, Jim Carey & Rob Schneider should stop making crappy movies.  hell, stop making movies altogether.  the money would be better spent on AIDS/Cancer research, alternative fuel, etc., etc.  oh, & stop David Spade too, before he makes JOE DIRT 2!  ugh!  watching their movies is time you'll NEVER get back!  it's why i no longer watch Robin Williams movies.

it's time for a new voice in comedy.  going back to these guys (especially meyers & sandler) is like going back to an ex-girlfriend who cheated on you & treated you like garbage.
a lot a pans from people who haven't seen the movie.  Even the writer of the article.  couldn't MSNBC spring for a ticket?
Personally, I have nothing against Myers and wish him well, but I agree that he needs to pick his projects more carefully. A film co-starring a chimp as his main rival would be a great start towards rehabilitating his trashed reputation.
The funniest thing Mike Myers ever did was panic onstage when Kanye West said that George Bush doesn't like black people.
Not unfair at all. I root against him too. I worked at Paramount Studios in the 90's and out of all the celebrities that I had to deal with he exuded the most aloofness. He didn't even try to mask his contempt for other lesser mortals. We had our share of established heavyweights and rising stars, but Mike, he apparently was in another league. But this was in the 90's. I bet he's not getting any appointments now.
Ouch. I'm glad I'm not putting myself out there for criticism as do entertainers. Mercy, please! The movie should only be critiqued by those who actually saw it. And then, according to the spirit of the genre. It's meant to be stupid. I wonder how much of the humor is lost on an American public that doesn't understand what he's lampooning, much like the fun he poked at Europeans in the Austin Powers series. I needed some explanations...
Look, enough nonsense already. I've read everybody's posts here and I think clearly his next project should be Poochie The Movie, co-starring a chimp as his proactive totally new paradigmatic buddy.
Mike Meyers was funny, hilarious even. Unfortunately, he's also become lazy. Different movie, with the same schtick. I believe Mike Meyers can be funny again, but right now I feel bad for him because after a long hiatus, I was expecting some new material. Instead all we got was the same string of fart-jokes and short-jokes we saw in Austin Powers...Waynes World...SNL.
Honestly, I love Mike Myers!!! I haven't seen The Love guru yet but if it isn't funny, Oh well!!! The man is allowed a bad idea every now and then!! Maybe whats wrong with this world these days is that everyone is so negative and unwilling to let loose and laugh. I hope I never get that way!! Hey Mike thanks for all the laughs and keep up the funny stuff!!!!
The problem with Myers is the same with all these multi-millionaire hollywood tycoons (I intentionally used a lowercase h)which is they love what they do too much and get greedy. It's like when you go to your friends house to play video games and he hogs the controller, not letting you play... These greedy, self centered A-holes need to see the bigger picture and pass the baton... They think their poop smells like roses and expect everyone to love their recycled, tired old crap becuase they're surrounded by bobble heads who play ass kiss rodeo... I live in L.A and want it to fall into the ocean... What ever happened to love, compassion and humanity?
I am a Mike Myers fan (So I married an Axe murderer, all 3 austin powers, shrek and good ol SNL) so I dutifully saw "The Love Guru".  Hey, "White Chicks" is my fav movie of all time, so I like the dumbed down, go for the gut type of comedies.  Although the Love Guru got a couple of chuckles out of me, I was disappointed overall.  I still think Mike Myers has it in him....he needs a good straight up comedy...he needs to be HIMSELF.  I think he is good on his own merits but just tries too hard with the over the top characters and raunchy, just plain out gross humor (Fat Bastard's stool sample anyone???).
To whoever wrote:
A great abyss in comedy was created when we lost John Candy.
He never had to try too hard like Myers,Williams or Ferrell.  I only had to look at Candy's face and a smile would form before he spoke a word.

I couldn't agree with you more. John Candy never relied on cude humor, insults, or poop jokes to get laughs. I don't quite know why he was as funny as he was. He clearly must have been a comedic genius. I think he knew true comedy was a catalyst to deep, true emotion. He was able to make you laugh and touch your heart at the same time. One of a kind, and greatly missed.
I saw the film, it had some very funny moments and Mike Myers accent of Depok was dead on! It was not as good as Austin Powers but that was unique and excellent!

Lighten Up! or Light up and go see the movie.

Justin Timberlake was great in the movie ,very funny character.

Alba was fine!
This article is right--Myers' brand of "look at me!!!!!!!" comedies is dated.  The Shrek movies are funny, though--he should stick with those.
Meyers and Sandler need to fade into black, along with Courtney Love too...

Enough of the CRAP, already...
It has long been common knowledge in the industry that Meyers is eogtistical maniac that fellow actors, producers and crew loath working with.  There enough bad karma in Hollywood without a putz like Meyers making even worse (if at all possible)  Dana Carvey never says a bad word about anyone and is a nice as Meyers is nasty... he is also as hugely funny as Meyers is NOT.
Please, no more Mike Meyers.  I just don't find him funny anymore... it feels like he's lost touch with what is funny, and does bits based on what he thinks that people will want.  And that's the worst way to make a movie (i.e. the George Lucas method).
Mike Myers is almost as unfunny as Adam Sandler. They both seem to make the same movie over and over again. Hollywood and the public continue to throw money at them for this garbage.
I actually liked the movie quite a bit! Perhaps, I have the mind and heart of a 14 year old (I'm 27 now), but I think the major problem is that Mike Myers was out of public view for so long, that people have just forgotten about him, and that TLG was not as good as the AP movies.

It wasn't so un-funny, as it's being made out to be! But then, I guess I'm more loyal than many people are to their fav actors/actresses!
"Sheesh, people. If you're not into the type of comedy that Mike Meyers and others like him do, DON'T GO AND SEE THE MOVIES."

i think that is the point- we didn't. thus, $ 14 million opening wkend.
I actually fell asleep in the 3rd Powers movie in the theater. You'd think the laughter of the audience would have kept me awake but it was as quiet as a church. Waynes World, Powers, even Shrek all use the same tired jokes over and over yet He keeps making sequels...please somebody stop him!!!
Tia Carrera was the only reason WW was any good
You are all so way off base.  There are only a few comments here that love Mike.  HE is a genius.  His comedy is so above most of your intelligences that you just don't get it. I find Americans in general, have a different sense of humor.  They just don't get being silly and goofy.  Mike Myers is a very intelligent and genuine person.  Give him a break.  All three Powers movies were incredibly witty and fresh.  HE is one of the great ones.
For what its worth, The Love Guru was absolutely hilarious, Although apparently not to the majority who were expecting something different. Honestly, what did you all expect? a mindblowing epic comedy that has every humor facet in your brain pulsating? I've seen a majority of Myers films, and I found them all enjoyable, especially Austin Powers, and his role as Shrek. If you don't enjoy satirical and childish humor, why would you see this movie in the first place? I enjoy all kinds of humor, whether it be dark, dry, or totally slapstickish. Just enjoy the movie for its face value, a childlike satire that will have high replay value on DVD.

Myers needs to give up trying to be funny because he just isn't anymore.  He should do what Jim Carey did and do some drama films to give his true acting skills a chance to come back.  Either that or do a film that is actually funny and not stupid or so darn slap stick.
I thought it was funny.  You guys all want some PC crap to watch....watch Dora the Explorer or Sesame Street.

Sheesh.
i think most of america is over mike myers.  he had his great run in the 1990's and the early 2000's but we want something fresh and new.

besides, the only reason I went to see the love guru was for stephen colbert and jim gaffigan as hockey announcers.
Something needs to be said here. Those people who are bashing Mike Myers and Love Guru without having seen the movie need to SHUT UP. Right now. Doesn't it get tiring criticizing you know nothing about. Even if the movie is stupid and tired, at least see it before passing judgement. I agree with Richard; sometimes we need a brainless comedy. This time Myers didn't do so well, but maybe next time he'll blow us away. Just give him a chance.
Thought the Guru was amusing enough to justify having gone to see it. My standard for the worst movie ever is calibrated around the dreadful The Crying Game. The entire cast, crew and everyone who had anything to do with it should be drowned.
The Love Guru was actually pretty funny. I didn't even want to see it, but was dragged there and really enjoyed it. Honestly, how is anyone suppose to decided on their own if they like it, with articles like this out there? It seems to me, YOU don't like Mike Myers, therefore, you write shit like this. Jealous much?????
I genuinely enjoyed this article. Thank you for writing it. Mike Myers was funny during Waynes World; funny during Austin Powers 1. But after the second and third Austin Powers sequels and, of course, The Love Guru, his time has definetly ended.

Get this guy a vest and some running shoes cuz his next movie is surely gonna be The Valet Guru.
ELSA,
You big dope! That's the point...he has become a vending machine! We don't go to the movies for vending machine material, we go to be entertained. He has been putting out the same stale bear claw for about 5 years now. If he is going to have any chance, he needs to get really drunk and do something politically incorrect like going out with no underwear and let the paparazzi snap away...he can go to rehab a couple of times and apologize, suggest he was abused as a child and that he has been saved. We will see him on the cover of People magazine and all will be well...until his next movie about a flatulence laced cross dressing gay midget that bombs at the box office. Then it will be time for Wayne's World 14 and the apocalypse will surely be upon us!
Mike Myers has never been funny, and falls into the same cliche' as that unfunny Will ferrett ...or is it ferrell..Anybody adult that shells out the money for their kids is a moron...film clips from Austin powers fat bastard, then listening him play the same fat bastard voice in shrek,,what a joke no talent idiot. HOPEFULLY, hopefully the studios will get the hint and stop paying this hack...
Mike is sort of the opposite of Will Ferrel in my opinion. The more you let Mike loose to do things his way, the worse the result. But controlled by writers and directors he can be really good.

Will Ferrel on the other hand is at his best when he is totally doing it his way. He comes up with the most incredibly original material, doesn't repeat himself and shows he is pretty smart and makes his costars have fun. There's certain things you can't fake. Will is at his worst when he has to do a lousy script that somebody else wrote.

I called "The Love Guru" before it came out. It was obvious it was going to bomb. For those who are genuine Hindus with a real and respectable guru, it is simply horribly insulting. For those who went through the Rajneesh misery, or a host of others, like Da Free John and got out, it's something they just don't want to be reminded of. It misses the core reality of people who went through that experience too. To everyone else who is neither, it's just bizarre, weird and totally stupid.
There are no funny movie actors these days. Mike Myers isn't funny, Steve Carrell isn't funny, Will Ferrell isn't funny. The dumb, horny male movies are not funny either.
Too many lousy SNL people making movies that are just not funny. How do these people sleep at night making lousy movies, why do the movies stuidos keep letting them make movies that stink. As for Mike Meyers he does the same jokes over and over from movie after movie. Trying to use the same accent in each movie is not funny its like watching Chevy Chase's Talk show. That bad!
Do you people laugh at anything or do you just spend all of your days waiting for people to fail to make your lives seem less depressing and more meaningful?  If you would actually go out and watch the movie, you would learn that it's actually hilarious and Mike Myers is a comic genius... When each of you make a movie, send me an email so I can NOT go see it and still slam you for how bad it is!
