I'll suffer through bad films for these actors

OK, I admit that I no longer see movies in the theater as often as I used to  (bills -- and a cute-shoe addiction -- eat up a lot of what used to be my "fun" money). I go to the movies maybe two or three times a year. But there are a few actors who can usually compel me to shell out $10 a ticket -- or at least time my Netflix returns to make sure I get their latest DVD right on its release date.

First, it was Eddie Furlong. After I saw him play John Connor in "Terminator 2" (he was sooooo dreamy!) his face stared down at me from every inch of my bedroom walls. If my friends couldn't (or wouldn't) go see his latest, I'd drag my dad and my brother with me and pay their way. I watched the good along with the bad -- especially the bad. "American History X" was amazing, but I still question my fondness for "Pet Semetary 2." All right, so I haven't seen "The Crow: Wicked Prayer" yet. But that's because I've grown up and he's no longer on my list.

Nowadays, the stars who can usually get me to fill a theater seat are Edward Norton (hmm ... this may explain why "American History X" is my all-time favorite movie), Christian Bale (he's set to play John Connor in the upcoming "Terminator" film; am I sensing a theme here?) and Anne Hathaway, whom I've loved since her days on the ill-fated but incredibly good Fox show "Get Real" (no ties to Furlong, as far as I know).

Yes, I "suffered" through (but secretly enjoyed) Bale's "Newsies" and Hathaway's "Princess Diaries." Come to think of it, I even sat through Woody Allen's "Everyone Says I Love You" just to see Norton. Painful. Ben Stiller's on my must-see list too, though I'm more likely to rent his DVDs than shell out hard-earned cash.

So why these actors and not other accomplished thespians? Bale and Norton can swing from charming good guys to deliciously evil in the blink of an eye. And when they star in the rare, tragically bad film, it's forgiveable simply because their performances are often the most enjoyable thing about those movies. Oh, and did I mention that they're pretty easy on the eyes, too? (Please refer to "American History X"-- again -- and "American Psycho.")

As for Hathaway, she's darn cute, but she has a very endearing quality that I find sweet, honest and relatable. Besides, a girl needs a good chick flick now and then, and Hathaway always delivers.

Stiller I can't really explain because he's been in a number of panned films. He just makes me laugh. Every. Single. Time. Well, maybe except in "Duplex" and "Envy." Those were just bad.

There are plenty of actors who have a solid roster of good films. Which stars can always put you in line for their next movie? Who's a guilty pleasure?

Must-see actors?  There just aren't that many any more, unfortunately.  Through good films and bad, though, I'll always give Tom Hanks, George Clooney, John Cusack and Cate Blanchett a shot.  I guess I've found more good films, and some great films, than I have bad ones with those four.

But Ben Stiller?  I have exactly the opposite reaction to his films than the columnist.  I avoid seeing his movies at all costs.  One would think that would be easy, but my husband wants to see all his films.
There's only one must see actor for me: Morgan Freeman. All the rest are merely vessels for characters.
I LOVED Get Real! Actually, that show started my semi-obsession with TV criticism, because I wrote a paper about it for a media criticism class. I think Anne Hathaway is adorable, too.
My must-see actors:  #1 Johnny Depp, no matter what the movie or theme, I am definately right to the theatre to see him.  Ever since Edward Scissorhands I have loved him.  #2 Ben Stiller, although I was not not a fan of him in the beginning, I am now.  And after seeing his latest, The Heartbreak Kid, I love him even more.  And I cannot tell you how many times I can watch Zoolander, Meet the Fockers, Dodgeball, etc. and laugh every single time.  #3 Tie between Will Farrell & Vince Vaughn (although I HATED The Break Up), both of these guys remind me of Frat Boys.  They always seem up to the party.  Old School has got to be one of my All-Time Favorite moives (You My Boy Blu).  Even Farrell's latest comedy, Semi-Pro Unrated, had me and husband on the floor laughing.  And Vaughn's Wild West Comedy Tour was Amazing.  Others that make the top are Adam Sandler, Owen Wilson, Ben Affleck, Matt Dillon, Jack Black, and Mike Meyers (although seeing the reviews for "Guru" I don't even know that I will go see it, even though I am the biggest Austin Powers freak).

I am more likely to go with those three rather than the "older" crowd.  Although I may get a beating for the next comment, I will go with it.  I cannot think of a single Tom Hanks movie that I enjoyed watching ever.  Not Forrest Gump.  Not Cast Away.  None.  He's just not my type of actor.  The only Tom Cruise movie that I enjoy is Jerry Maguire.  That's it.

So needless to say, I will only spend the money to see the comedies (good or bad) of the "frat boys" anyday.
I love Julia Roberts films, I'll watch anything she is in, George Clooney ranks there for me too, along with Will Smith. Although I dont get the Ben Stiller thing, yes he is amusing but he gets on my nerves sometimes.  I did love him in the dodgeball movie though. I think Anne Hathaway is terrific also.
Kevin Spacey, without a doubt.
The only actor on this globe that I will watch, regardless of whether the movie itself is good or bad, is Al Pacino.  No matter what, he always gives an unblieveably outstanding performance, even if the film's story isn't so great.  I LOVE to just see him act---he is amazing to watch.
My must see Actors/Actress (no matter how bad the film):
Ryan Gosling
Emma Thompson
Clint Eastwood
Meryl Streep
Jeff Bridges
Cate Blanchett
Robert Downey Jr
Anne Hathaway
Johnny Depp
Natalie Portman
Adam Sandler
Ellen Page
Matt Dillon
Julianne Moore
Christopher Walken
Leslie Mann
Gary Oldman
Joan Cusack
Gerard Butler
Amy Poehler
Jason Bateman
Joanne Woodward
Will Arnett
Liv Tyler
Robert Redford
Paul Newman
John Cusack
I completely agree with you.  Norton and Bale are two of my favorites and who I will follow to the theater.  The other for me would be Kate Winslet.  She is amazing.
Shia LeBeouf is quickly moving up my list.

I completely agree with Christian Bale and Johnny Depp.  I want to enjoy Natalie Portman, but she's made some...interesting...films.  And John Cusack and Kevin Spacey will always have a place on my movie list!
I am always wary of Ben Stiller, but I will always watch Ed Norton, Johnny Depp, and Meg Ryan...those are my favs.
I would say Christian Bale and Johnny Depp.
Johnny Depp and George Clooney...every time.
Anna Chan is right...that shower scene in Am. Hist. X was pretty hot!!
They just don't make 'em like they used to.  I hope that John Cusack, Kate Winslet and Joaquin Phoenix continue to do quality work for many years to come. The one who can take a break is Mike Myers.  I have only enjoyed him in the Shrek movies.
Male(s) - Tim Robbins or Morgan Freeman
Female(s) - Meryl Streep (enough said)
two words.......BEN FOSTER!!!!!!!!!!
Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington, Paul Newman, Russell Crowe. Everyone else had better be in a decent movie.

Anne Hathaway is cute, but have you ever seen her on a talk show? She is the female version of Jon Lovit's actor character.... "ACTING! THANK YOU VERY MUCH." it's just acting. She makes it sound like she's saving people from burning buildings.
I am soooo happy to hear that someone else shares my passion for Christian Bale.  I am 32 years old and watched "Newsies" just a couple of weeks ago just to see Christian Bale.  I have been a huge fan since his "Empire of the Sun."  (For those of you who haven't seen it, rent it, it is a wonderful movie).

I can't remember the last time I went to the movies but the one who seem to get my attention the most are Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Will Ferrell, and Jack Black.  I am also a huge Chris Farley fan and if he were still alive making movies, I know that I would be watching his movies.  Tommy Boy is one of my all time favorite movies.
I don't think there are "Must See Actor/Actresses" anymore.  Far too many hit-n-miss shows with unpredictable players.  When I was growing up, 9 out of 10 movies with Clint Eastwood were shows I'd pay to see.  Now, there are no good solid action heroes worth the price of admission.  Just about the only actor these days I think is almost guaranteed to give you an excellent performance (stupid show or not) is Will Smith.  I won't go see everything he does, but at least the ones I do see I know he'll do a great job.  As for the Actresses; There is a lot of beautiful eye candy out there, but few who stay with the types of shows I like.
My list would include Johnny Depp and Morgan Freeman as others have mentioned. But my all time favorite is Harrison Ford.
Forest Whitaker
Brilliant.
JAMES MCAVOY.  Period.
I would go see Ed Norton,Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, Ralph Fiennes and Paul Bettney. Cate Blanchett, Toni Collette or Emma Thompson.  They have all proved that excellent actors, who make you believe in the part they are playing.  Even if the movie or the other actors are horrible they are always spot on.  Tom Cruise is overrated.  He has not done anything note worthy since probably "Born on the 4th of July".
Classics like Kate Hepburn, Spencer Tracy, Rita Hayworth, Carole Lombard, and Robert Mitchum (the do not make men like that anymore). Julia Roberts, Sandra Bullock, Keanu Reeves (I can hear ya'll groaning), Christian Bale (The Machinist was disturbing, but he was amazing!) and one name that no one has mentioned, Brendan Fraser. This guy is fabulous. Between Journey to the Center of the Earth and the new Mummy movie, I'll be in blue-eyed heaven this summer!
Mine?  Among many...

Christopher Walken, Al Pacino, Michael Caine, Alan Rickman, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Bob Gunton

Wow, I cannot believe no one has mentioned Matt Damon.  He is probably the only actor who will make me see a movie regardless of subject matter.  From when I first saw him in "Good Will Hunting" I thought he was talented even though Ben Affleck was garnering far more attention at that time and few agreed with me.

I think his performances are always interesting and he does not let his own vanity interfere with his portrayal of his characters.
Darn! Knew I forgot at least one... Geoffrey Rush
Johnny Depp and Alan Rickman, without a doubt.
My must-sees (I love a variety of movies, so some offer lighter fare than others):

male: Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington, Hugh Grant, Will Smith, Johnny Depp, James McAvoy
female: Julia Roberts, Reese Witherspoon, Anne Hathaway, Emma Thompson, Queen Latifah
My must see actor is Sean Hayes.  I don't think that there are anymore "must-see" actors because films that are made today lack substance.  There are alot of good actors and it all depends on a generational thing too, the baby boomers love films that Generation X'ers might not be aware of and vise versa.  But, I love Morgan Freeman too.
Most of my favorite actors qualify as such either because of quality movies they have done which seem to outweigh the bad ones, or simply for the fact they're eye candy.
Depp is definitely high on my list, but I do have a love for all things Burton (and since the two are practically synonymous...) Other faves include Keira Knightley, James McAvoy (loved him since Children of Dune), I'm starting to like Shia LaBeouf (although I hated his character in Indiana), Will Smith, Orlando Bloom, Joaquin Phoenix...
Then there are those actors who just produce quality consistently.   Daniel Day-Lewis comes to mind, or Cate Blanchett.
Really, I'm more prone to following directors or producers (Guillermo del Toro, Frank Miller, Robert Rodriguez, M Night Shyamalan, Quentin Tarantino, Coehn bros. occasionally).
In no particular order unless specified as such:
Nicole Kidman (#2 female)
Ellen Barken
Angelina Jolie
Julie Christy (TOP female)
Hallie Berry
Charleze Theron
Kathleen Turner
Robert Redford
Joaquin Phoenix
Ed Harris (TOP male)
Kevin Spacey
Billy Bob Thornton
Nick Cage
Ewan McGreggor (#2 of males)
William H. Macy
Kevin Bacon
Oops! Michael Douglas - especially in 'Wonder Boys'.

I think part of the reason these actors are on my list are because I somehow find them strangely attractive [using that criteria, I could put Sean Penn here for 'Carlito's Way'! ;)]
For me I absolutely will go see my favorites: Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington, Anthony Hopkins, Sean Connery, oldies but goodies! I'm just starting to like Tom Cruise but still picky about his movies. Comedy, Will Farrell, use to be Eddie Murphy but with the whole Scarey Spice thing, he turned me off.
I find myself drawn to Ed Norton and Christian Bale as well.  When these guys are on screen you forget that they are just pretending to be someone.  You only see the character. When people like Tom Cruise or Tom Hanks are on screen it seems as though it's "Tom Cruise playing so-and-so" or "Tom Hanks as.........." Norton and Bale make you love/hate/crave/cry with them instead of FOR them.
Ewan McGregor
Joaquin Phoenix
Johnny Depp

I like many of the actors mentioned in the comments, but I see these three actors, no matter the movie, because I think their work is wonderful.
Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Genius.
Russell Crowe, Johnny Depp, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Val Kilmer
I'd have to say Christian Bale (oh the hotness) and Samuel L. Jackson - he's just the man. "Snakes on a Plane" was pretty lame, but to hear Sammy yell the line "Snakes on a plane mother *bleep*!" was classic!
Unfortunatly, there is a lot of crappy movies with good actors - so it was really hard for me to make a list of must-see people.  I hate going to see a fav actor/actress and the movie stinks.  But still, I submit the following:

John Cusack - I just think he is the 'Every Guy' type of guy.  I think John Cusack is to me what Anne Hathaway is to this column's reporter.

Samuel L. Jackson - Can honestly make a bad film better - case in point: Snakes On A Plane.  Also let me say I think I would have really enjoyed Black Snake Moan had I not watched it with my mother. (UGH)

Approaching the list: Shia LeBouf (sp) and Matt Damon.

As for the columnist's choice of Ben Stiller, I have just two words:
Derek Zoolander!
The only actor I'll really go to see is Jason Isaacs, an underrated British actor.  Also partial to Sam Waterson, Harrison Ford, Meryl Streep and Gene Hackman, though he has retired.  There's plenty I wouldn't pay to see but the list is too long to name.
Ever since my daughters and I saw Edward Norton play his role in Primal Fear, we have loved him.  He lost out to Cuba Gooding Jr. for Jerry Macguire, but that was a BIG mistake.  I've seen every Norton movie - the 25th hour was another good one with his rant in the mirror.  Love, love
Actors I enjoy, even if the movie blows? Hmmm tough, since most of them suck without a good director... Russell Crowe, say what you want about him, he always "brings it" and makes any role his.  Jennifer Garner, Jason Statham, Meryl Streep.  I just don't like most of the "actors" out there, at some point they start phoning it in, and I'm not contributing to their paychecks.
Harrison Ford - always at the top of my list.
Sean Connery (I don't care how old he gets, he's still yummy!)
Edward Norton
Phillip Seymour Hoffman
Alan Rickman
Patrick Stewart
Cate Blanchette
Meryl Streep
Anything by Mel Brooks
Viggo Mortensen (why has no one else mentioned him?)
Gwyneth Paltrow
Angelina Jolie (in spite of all the publicity, she really is a very talented actress)
John Cleese
Robin Williams
Ian McClellan
Judi Dench
Any movie with Johnny Depp, Alan Rickman, Emma Thompson or Will Smith and an honorable mention for Edward Norton and Christian Bale (I LOVED Swing Kids!-even though it is something of a downer).
Oh man, I love a lot of the responses so far

Men: Will Smith, Alan Rickman, Shia LaBeouf, and Christian Bale. I love them in practically anything. As far as I know, aside from the Bad Boys films, I have paid to see every single one of Will Smith's movies in the theatres.

Women: Emma Thompson. I think Kate Hudson is cute. My husband likes Kate Beckinsale. Amy Adams is climbing my list. Honestly, though? I am never consistently impressed by any actress, really. Except for mabe Angelica Houston and Sigourney Weaver. They are fantastic everytime.
My must sees include Cate Blanchette, Daniel Day-Lewis, Juliette Binoche, Sean Penn & William H Macy.
Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Colin Firth and Hugh Grant.  Hmmmm...I guess I love the British!
Not a single Bruce Willis in the whole bunch? If you need some good Bruce check out Ransom (Ben Foster was also amazing in that). The rest of my list goes, Pacino, Walken, Will Smith, Bale, Norton, DiCaprio, Ferrell, and Sandler.
