I'll suffer through bad films for these actors

OK, I admit that I no longer see movies in the theater as often as I used to  (bills -- and a cute-shoe addiction -- eat up a lot of what used to be my "fun" money). I go to the movies maybe two or three times a year. But there are a few actors who can usually compel me to shell out $10 a ticket -- or at least time my Netflix returns to make sure I get their latest DVD right on its release date.

First, it was Eddie Furlong. After I saw him play John Connor in "Terminator 2" (he was sooooo dreamy!) his face stared down at me from every inch of my bedroom walls. If my friends couldn't (or wouldn't) go see his latest, I'd drag my dad and my brother with me and pay their way. I watched the good along with the bad -- especially the bad. "American History X" was amazing, but I still question my fondness for "Pet Semetary 2." All right, so I haven't seen "The Crow: Wicked Prayer" yet. But that's because I've grown up and he's no longer on my list.

Nowadays, the stars who can usually get me to fill a theater seat are Edward Norton (hmm ... this may explain why "American History X" is my all-time favorite movie), Christian Bale (he's set to play John Connor in the upcoming "Terminator" film; am I sensing a theme here?) and Anne Hathaway, whom I've loved since her days on the ill-fated but incredibly good Fox show "Get Real" (no ties to Furlong, as far as I know).

Yes, I "suffered" through (but secretly enjoyed) Bale's "Newsies" and Hathaway's "Princess Diaries." Come to think of it, I even sat through Woody Allen's "Everyone Says I Love You" just to see Norton. Painful. Ben Stiller's on my must-see list too, though I'm more likely to rent his DVDs than shell out hard-earned cash.

So why these actors and not other accomplished thespians? Bale and Norton can swing from charming good guys to deliciously evil in the blink of an eye. And when they star in the rare, tragically bad film, it's forgiveable simply because their performances are often the most enjoyable thing about those movies. Oh, and did I mention that they're pretty easy on the eyes, too? (Please refer to "American History X"-- again -- and "American Psycho.")

As for Hathaway, she's darn cute, but she has a very endearing quality that I find sweet, honest and relatable. Besides, a girl needs a good chick flick now and then, and Hathaway always delivers.

Stiller I can't really explain because he's been in a number of panned films. He just makes me laugh. Every. Single. Time. Well, maybe except in "Duplex" and "Envy." Those were just bad.

There are plenty of actors who have a solid roster of good films. Which stars can always put you in line for their next movie? Who's a guilty pleasure?

For me:
Men: Morgan Freeman, William H. Macy, Hugh Grant, Harrison Ford, Johm Cusack, Johnny Depp, Colin Firth and Lana Rickman

Women: Cate Blanchett, Emma Thompson, Rene Zellweger (to  some  extent), Kate Winslett
Viggo Mortensen (only 2 of us here? c'mon!)
Will Smith
Johnny Depp

and my true guilty pleasure-the "frat pack" guys. their movies aren't anything but a good time (although Owen Wilson in The Minus Man was astonishing!)...
Ed Harris, Forrest Whitaker, Ed Norton, William H. Macy, Kevin Spacey, Cate Blanchett, Emma Thompson, Uma Thurman are the only ones I'd pay a movie ticket.  Everyone else, well, depending on the ensemble, will wait for the DVD.  There aren't that many great actors out there.

But, I'd pay a mint to see Brad Pitt and Angelia Jolie remake "The Thin Man" movies.

Heck, they could re-release the originals and I'd still pay a mint.
There are a lot of actors/actresses that I have a lot of respect for and though I can't remember all of them right now, I am listing a few that I can think of off the top of my head. In random order:

Dustin Hoffman
Will Smith
Christian Bale
Tom Hanks
Kevin Spacey
John Cusak
Liv Tyler
Gary Oldman
Johnny Depp
Kate Winslet
Joan Cusak
Drew Barrymore
Keira Knightley (she's rapidly growning on my list)
And I must admit that I love the Frat pack :)

If this article were about those whom are no longer with us but were talented and admired, this list would include a lot of other names.
Richard Gere, Mark Ruffalo, Drew Barrymore (the only woman who could make me love a movie with Adam Sandler in it), Harrison Ford, Sandra Bullock
i'm with heather on the morgan freeman addiction.  he is truly a great actor.
Norton, Bale and Joaquin Phoenix.  I would watch each read the phonebook.
I think Don Cheadle and Joaquin Phoenix are both brilliant... I do not miss a movie with either of them in it!!
I have to agree with Chris in Philly - Bruce Willis is great even in terrible movies, and a stand-out even in bit parts.

Others on my list include Robert Downey Jr., Ewan MacGregor, Will Smith, John Cusack, Steve Carrell, Luke Wilson.  I don't have a particular favorite female, but I was just thinking the other day that Anne Hathaway is becoming a standout.
I have not missed a single Mel Gibson film, and would go anywhere to see him.  Also think that Danny Glover and Ed Norton are the best.

Angela, New York
Can't believe no has mentioned Don Cheadle, Derek Luke, or Jeffery Wright.
I agree with most of the rest, but wanted to put those names up first!!!!
My must see actor is Keanu Reeves.  I have loved him since Bill and Ted.  He has really grown as an actor and he's not to bad to look at either.
Nathan Fillion could stand there reading a phone book and I would pay to see it.

It seems, the older one becomes, the longer the list grows. Perhaps it's because there are more to pick from. With that said, my list...

Robert Redford (any age, any genre)
Johnny Depp
George Clooney
Robert Downey Jr
Will Farrell
Jude Law
Kevin Spacey
John Malkovich
Jack Nichelson
Clive Owen
With the exception of Will Farrell (who is my admitted guilty pleasure) the one thing all these actors have in common is the ability to make me forget that I'm watching an actor. Meaning their public personae hasn't eclipsed whatever role they choose to assume. Tom Cruise used to possess that ability, but has become so adept at being Tom Cruise, that whenever I see him on screen of late all I see is Tom Cruise and not the character he is trying to portray. I don't know if he'll ever be more than just a personality to me anymore.
I find it fascinating, looking at the list of men, that no one has mentioned Brad Pitt.  I have to wonder what has knocked him off of his onetime pedastal as "the favorite."
Yes!! - someone else mentioned Owen Wilson in Minus Man. I love him in all of his movies.  Others? Will Smith, Robert Downey Jr, Kate Winslow.  For amazing eye-candy Johnny Depp of course.
My favorites?  Johnny Depp, Robert Downey Jr., Leo DiCaprio, Will Ferrell, Will Smith, and Gerard Butler (who looks good, and sings like a hot, sexy angel of music, pun intended).. I've loved Christian Bale since Newsies and Swingkids (amazing movie even if he wasn't in it).  As far as females, They all seem so similar in movies today, but the ones I love are the ones that aren't blonde and perky all the time,  like Kate Winslet, Anne Hathaway, Kathryn Heigl, Hilary Swank, Sandra Bullock and Toni Collette (especially in Muriel's Wedding).  Now don't get me wrong, i like perky people, but sometimes i get tired of them being the same character with diff't names in every single movie.  I am especially sick of Cameron Diaz, and Angelina Jolie.  Even when they are in good movies (and Cameron is in two of my recent favorites, but I'm usually rooting for whoever is her oppostion)
I love Morgan Freeman - I will watch just about anything he's in; also Jack Nicholson, Meryl Streep, Sandra Bullock, Drew Barrymore, Hugh Grant and Kate Winslet.

I used to love Meg Ryan but she's had so much bad work done to her face that I can't stand to look at her anymore.
There are quite a few out there, but I HAVE TO SEE any movie with Al Pacino, Robert De Niro or Dustin Hoffman, be it good or bad.  They have become known for eating through some scenes in certain movies, but they're good at it no matter what!  My up-and-comers are Will Smith, Denzel Washington, Russell Crowe, Morgan Freeman, Cate Blanchett, Harrison Ford and even indie queeens Lili Taylor and Parker Posey (although she was HORRID in "Blade: Trinity").  Christian Bale and Ed Norton make my list too, but I'm a little hot and cold for Ben Stiller, but he goes get me every now and again.  But don't forget about Tommy Lee Jones - he's a scene chewer at times too, but great at his craft.
I can't believe no one has said Patrick Stewart! What about the great British accent?
Simon Baker, Simon Baker, Simon Baker.  Yummy!!!!!!
Johnny Depp is certainly top of my list, but I can't believe no one has mentioned Antonio Banderas!  I have sat through a few stinkers just to watch him move and talk!
Must see actors:

Alan Rickman, LOVE to hear him speak (so many people have listed him)
Tom Hanks, Just love him
Johnny Depp, Always protrays interesting characters
Will Smith, charming
Denzel Washington, so talented
Anthony Hopkins, ditto
Robert Duvall, he's an actor that, no matter who's on screen, I watch him
Emma Thompson, LOVE HER!
What's the matter with you people? HEATH LEDGER!!!!!!
They don't make them like they used to - they're better!  I am glad the studio system is dead and we can see actors choose work that will showcase their talent and might have personal meaning to them.

In no order are my fave actors:
Phillip Seymour Hoffman
Edward Norton
Michael Morse
RobertDowney, Jr.
Cate Blanchett
Ralph Fiennes
Joaquin Phoenix
Alan Rickman
Reese Witherspoon
Clint Eastwood
Ed Harris
Joan Cusack
Nicole Kidman
Honestly, I cannot turn down a chance to see anything Brad Pitt's in.  I know he gets a lot of flack for being such a pretty boy, but I appreciate how versatile he is.  I became a fan of his as a young girl watching 'Interview with the Vampire'.  And whether he's playing a cop ('7even'), a psychopath (12 Monkeys), an assassin (Mr. And Mrs. Smith) or a sly criminal (Ocean's Eleven)... he's definitely got my attention!!!!
Alan Rickman, he has the most amazing voice.  Johnny Depp, because I'm convinced there is no role he can't make his own. And Will Smith, just 'cause he's cool!
Must see actor - my evil older twin (you figure it out) Sean Connery and I'm a sucker for superhero flicks.
Nathan Fillion anyone?
Daniel Day Lewis and Viggo Mortenson.  Mortensen?  Viggo.

Every.  Single.  Movie.
Jack Lemon, Clint Eastwood, John Wayne.
Sean Bean--the greatest actor ever!  Seriously.  Edward Norton is good.  So is George Clooney.  And Charlize Theron. And John Malkovich--even when the movies aren't that great, his performance is.
Alan Rickman (He's so dreamy, even as Snape)
Michael Gambon
Will Smith (I love just about every single thing he has ever done. Even Fresh Prince)
Eddie Izzard
Christian Bale (The Best Batman EVER!! He was fantastic in Little Women too. That was the first time I ever saw him)
Heath Ledger (God I miss him already)
Morgan Freeman (There is something sexy about him to me. He's confident in everything he's in. He knows what he's doing. When I think about God now I think of Morgan Freeman)
Dame Maggie Smith (I love love LOVE her)
Cate Blanchett
Gweneth Paltrow
Johnathon Rhys Meyers (I could look at him forever and would pay $1 million to nibble on his lips. He's also a great actor)
I can't think of any others although I know I have them.
My must-sees are Johnny Depp, Eric Bana (extremely underrated), Ewan McGregor, David Wenham, Hugo Weaving, and Orlando Bloom.

Even "bad" movies with these actors are almost always entertaining.
For me it is Viggo Mortenson. He was hot before he stared in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.  He is a great actor who can do any type of role.  Plus, he is gorgeous.
Val Kilmer, One of the Best an under rated actors around. I've watched his career my whole life. As for Actors & Actresses that I'd shill out for a full price ticket no matter what with Examples: Christopher Walken (Balls of Fury), Jessica Alba (Love GuRu), Mark Walberg (San Diego, Ca "Good Vibrations Tour", Sean Connery (Voice of the dragon in Dragon Heart) Yes even these bad films they have done. I still love'em all and pay my full price to see them on the big screen.
Keanu Reeves. Some say his acting style is a bit wooden and stiff - I consider him dependable. Point Break, Constantine, Johnny Mnemomnic, Chain Reaction even Bill and Ted - not quite in the same league as The Matrix but I'd watch them all over and over again just to watch Keanu in action.
If Clint E was involved in a film in any way, shape or form (actor, director, music), I'm in the theater.  He has the creative juices to reel me in.  Even his bad stuff is better than just about everything else.    Philip Seymour Hoffman is brilliant.  And then there's wildly intense Ed Harris and Tommy Lee Jones' controlled intensity.  The guys really bring it to the table.  I really like Laura Linney, too.  She's very adept at keeping her characters real, but the gals have a way to go in making me fork over the bucks for a first-run seat.
I guess the majority of us like to see actors/actresses that look good.  Whether they have skills or not is not important.  Gosh.  We are Mega-superficial!!!!!
Most of the actors on these lists are not only very good at their craft, but most of them pick interesting projects.  My understanding is that the director, editors, and producers, have final say in how the story gets told, but these actors seem to make their characters work despite the poor decisions of the movie makers.  Most of them don't play the same thing twice, unless it is a sequal and most of them make the sequals worth watching.  They keep and demand your attention and that is what makes them so great.

Okay, here is my list.
Johny Depp (the Brando of my X generation)
George Clooney (like a nice Merloe - does anyone remember the first ER he was in)
Kirston Dunst (eversince her first "bite" in Interview)
Ryan Gosling
Ben Foster
Christian Bale
Edward Norton (must see Primal Fear)
Meryl Streep
Heath Ledger (RIP)
Angelina Jolie
Will Smith
Reese Witherspoon

And let us not forget
Ginger Rogers
Betty Davis
Cary Grant
Jack Lemon
James Stewart
James Cagney
Humphrey Bogart
Katharine Hepburn
Audrey Hepburn
Rex Harrison
Elizabeth Taylor

There are a lot of fine actors in today's listing - Bale, Cusack, Blanchett, Carrey, Mortenson, Reno, Binoche, Bettaney, Macgregor, Roberts, etc.  But, the artists I would watch doing a bathroom tile commercial are Depp, Norton, Gosseling, Jeff Bridges, Rush, Jolie, Streep, Dench. I don't know what people see in Hanks, Cruise, Ford, Anniston.  They are all one-dimensional. If I were to do my all-time list in addition to my bathroom tile actors: Grant, Pacino, DeNiro, Hepburns (2), K. Douglas, Russell.
Heath Ledger was my go-to guy.  STill will be for his final two movies.  Christian Bale is another (yes, I even watched Newsies for him, and, more painfully, LIttle Women).

In the past, I had Kenneth Branaugh (coasting on the good will he created with Henry V and Much Ado About Nothing), and Harrison Ford (until he started doing those stupid action movies in the 1990's.  Mosquito Coast was the last of his that I had to see).

Kate Winslet would be my must-see actress.  Has she ever turned in a bad performance?
Two Words....Javier Bardem.
Since his role in "No Country for Old Men", I have seen many of his other films. What a character actor he is! Also a very attractive man under the ugly makeup & hair for "No Country".
My must-watch actor list includes Christian Bale, too, as well as Jonathan Rhys-Meyers (the combination of the two in "Velvet Goldmine" makes the top of my head blow off every time I watch it). Also on my list, however, are a few guys you wouldn't likely see starring in blockbusters (yet), but whose performances "make" the movies they're in (at least for me):

Michael Pitt ("Rhinoceros Eyes" and "Funny Games" spring to mind immediately, but he's been in a zillion fantastic movies)
James Duval (he's in a ton of indie movies, and always makes me sit up and pay attention; see "The Doom Generation" and "Totally F***ed Up")
Lukas Haas (see him in "Johns" - breathtaking performance)
Jonathon Trent (relative newbie, but "Boy Culture" and, to a lesser degree, "Alone with Her" both cemented him into my consciousness)
Tom Cruise !
He was ripped off by the Hollywood elitist who didn't want him to get the " Best Actor " award for the " Last Sumarai . " He is the most consistant actor in the industry for quality performances on the screen .

That's really a woman thing to watch a movie because a certain actor is in it. But I won't hold it against you Anna.
How on earth is Daniel Day-Lewis not on everyone's list???  Pound for pound, he is the greatest actor alive (mild apologies to Jack Nicholson).  No one has won more Best Actor Oscars than he has, but besides that, he is absolutely electrifying in every performance he gives.
Give me Steve McQueen, Tony Curtis, and 'Cool Hand Luke' Paul Newman on the classic movie channels any time over today's stars ..
I have to say there is also something extremely intense about Jeremy Irons.. he has one heck of a voice loved him in the Man in the Iron Mask, Eragon.
Ben Stiller????  Let's put it this way...  If a Ben Stiller movie comes out, I just saved $10.  Two hours of stupid looks and shameless one-liners get old after a few years.

If a movie has Daniel-Day Lewis, then it's a must see.
