'CSI' without Gil Grissom? I'll pass

“Well, there goes that show,” my pal, co-worker and fellow “CSI” devotee, Gerrie said after hearing the news that William Petersen is leaving “CSI.”

The show’s executive producer, Carol Mendelsohn, was quick to try to put a positive spin on it, telling Entertainment Weekly’s Michael Ausiello, “There’s never going to be another William Petersen, and there will never be another Jorja Fox. But we are not out to just replace those actors. We’re out to add new characters to the show, and the show will change as a result. But that’s a good thing.”

CBS

Um, no, it’s not. Petersen’s Gil Grissom is the heart of “CSI” – he creates the show’s offbeat personality that keeps it more than a few steps above “CSI: Miami” and “CSI: New York.” And despite what “Law & Order” creator Dick Wolf thinks, actors aren’t light bulbs; you can’t just replace one when it goes out and expect it to shine as brightly.

Yeah, “Law & Order” has gone on, but has it really been the same or as good as it was during Jerry Orbach’s Lennie Briscoe era? I know, he wasn’t with that show when it began, but when he joined the show, he gave it a center, and he gave it soul. Was “Homicide: Life on the Street” the same without Andre Braugher’s Frank Pembleton?

It’s frustrating when TV producers assume we care so little about the characters they create. Do they really think that “CSI” fans are just tuning in for the camera work or to find out who the latest murder victim is? And no, I don’t begrudge Petersen (or Jorja Fox or Gary Dourdan) the right to move on to other projects, but I also don’t think this top-notch show is going to be half as good.

Some of the changes that Ausiello pointed out are positive. He noted that Wendy, Super Dave and Hodges are all being promoted to main characters.  And at least last year, the producers seem to quickly realize that no one enjoyed Ronnie Lake (Jessica Lucas) – as she was yanked pretty quickly from the cast. Nick and Greg can probably be guaranteed more screen time, but it’s pretty hard to get excited about a Grissom-less “CSI.” I don’t even really care about “The L Word’s” Lauren Lee Smith joining the cast.

Ausiello did point out that another male cast member is joining late in the season, and that producers are looking at Kurt Russell, Laurence Fishburne or John Malkovich to possibly play him. They must be kicking themselves that they killed off Liev Schreiber’s character last year. But honestly, again, who cares? Russell, Malkovich or any other actor they add just won’t be able to replace Grissom.

Yep, I’ll be watching this fall (Grissom is rumored to be leaving sometime mid-season), but don’t be surprised if I don’t stay with it after Grissom’s exit. He’s the reason I started watching the show, so I guess it makes sense that he’ll be the reason I stop.

I will be very sad to see Grissom go.  I definitely don't think that the show will be even close to as good.  That said...Laurence Fischburne could be VERY interesting.  I am a big fan of ol' Morpheus. I think that John Malkovich would be almost to quirky for the show.  And how hysterical would it be if Kurt Russel could make a big trouble in little china reference "and you remember what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like that: "Have ya paid your dues, Jack?" "Yessir, the check is in the mail." LOL!!
Honestly, CSI without Gil Grissom?? Can you say suicide for CSI??
I agree with this statement 100%! Grissom is who we want to see and it will be on the bottom of my list once he is gone and join the other CSI shows on my "what not to watch" list.
AT
You're right Grissiom is the heart of the show.........and yes I will be watching too.....I have heard that Sara will be in the first episode in the fall....that will be interesting and I wonder how Grissiom will leave???
I am still in shock over Warrick and the end of last season..........the whole show will be different....
I don't know if I will continue to watch after Grissom leaves...........

I totally agree.  Grissom is the reason I watch the show
and no matter who they get the show won't be the same without him.  I will probably stop watching too when Grissom is gone.
Perfectly said and I agree wholeheartedly. I too watch CSI because of Grissom (and William Petersen's brilliant portrayal of him) and will have no reason to continue to watch CSI after he leaves. I understand his reasons for leaving and wish him the very best (as I do Jorja Fox and Gary Dourdan). I do think Petersen is happier in the theater and we as fans can look forward to more varied and brilliant performances by him on the stage. Unfortunately, CSI: LV will no longer be the best and most unique of the CSI franchise and will become just another procedural. It may continue (ala Law & Order and ER) but it will just be another show you might tune into when you have nothing else to do versus 'must see' TV that you make a point of never missing each week. Personally, I think the executives at CBS should have been less greedy about keeping the show going and should have promoted a final season and written a finale episode to give CSI and its ENTIRE ORIGINAL ensemble a really grand exit with some closure instead of limping off into the night.
Paige, while I am in agreement with you about the general thrust of your article, I think you have shortchanged the producers of CSI.  Did you first watch the show because of "ohh they cast William Peterson factor" or was it because it was a really cool show to watch and then you came to love ALL of the characters. I myself will give the new version of the show plenty of time to re-engage me the way it initially did because I think the producers of the show are smart enough to not "jump the shark" with any bizarre casting.
I agree with Grissom gone, the show won't be the same, but in all honesty, the same writers and producers are still on the show, so the content will not change that dramatically. Besides, seeing Malkovich on CSI, that makes me drool!
I too only watch the show because of Grissom.  I thought Jorja Fox and Grissom had some chemistry going. I thought about not watching after she left the show but stayed because of Grissom.  Even with Brown leaving I thought I would stay but now????  Why is it that the best charactors are leaving.  I enjoyed Brown getting into all kinds of scrapes.  It made the show real.  The chemistry between Grissom and Sarah made the show believable.  It only showed that the characters were capable of human emotions.
I'm willing to see where it goes. I'm with Carol Mendelsohn on this one: Don't try to replace Grissom with version 2.0.  You mentioned Law & Order as an example: as much as I normally like Dennis Farina, it felt like they tried too hard to stick to the junior partner/senior partner thing, and it felt like a cheap replacement for Jerry Orbach.  In the last few years, however, they've made a few changes, relaxed their "formula", and I think the show's as good now as it's ever been.  And I liked Liev Schrieber on CSI, I thought he fit in well.  He can't come back, but if they keep the stories good and don't try to make a "New Grissom", I'm willing to give it a go.
I'm going with you. CSI will never be the same without Grissom. When he's gone, I'm gone.
While I have always loved all of the characters, Grissom in particular, it's the stories that keep me coming back.  As long as the stories are compelling I'll give the new characters a chance. I'll really miss Grissom and Warrick but I'm hopefull that the show can continue it's great story telling and remain Must See TV.
I've always been struck by the sort of family-type dynamic on this show: Grissom's been looked up to as a father figure, and there's been talks about how Warrick might step up should Grissom ever be gone.  So with Grissom gone, and Warrick likely dead, it would be interesting to see if Nick would sort of step up to the plate.  I think there's room for the other characters to do more, and while I'll miss Grissom, I'm looking forward to see what effect it has on the stories.
Frankly, I'm more sad that Grissom's departure likely means no more Lady Heather appearances :(...at least there's been word that she'll be around again before Grissom leaves...
i agree 100 percent and i think CSI is about to jump the shark. :/ thats too bad but it was one of the better shows on tv these days. but then again one guy cannot go around playing the same character year after year . change might be good, but not for the show that's for sure
Killing Brown was really bad, but Grissom isn't dead.  I'll give the new cast a chance to hook me, but this change isn't necessarily good for the show.  The producers my have already "jumped the shark"by announcing this exit.
Kurt Russell, Laurence Fishburne or John Malkovich are all interesting ideas, though I can't really see any of them pulling it off.  Grissom occupied a unique position as a character -- part cold-fish scientist, part interestingly quirky guy (e.g., as someone who could interact with Lady Heather).  That balance will be tough to replace.  My idea would be to knock on Ed Harris's door to see if he would be interested in some TV work.
When I started seing CSI i loved all the characters, but I fell in love with Gil Grissom. Obviously, he is the star of the show. The cast complemented each other and it was a success because of all of them When Jorja left, it was weird for me to watch the show, because I thought their realtionship was key to the dynamic of the show.It didn't feel the same. Now, William Petersen is leaving the show. I don't think it will survive.I certainly won't watch it without Gil Grissom.
No Grissom - no show. His character was so much better than the lead men in the other two CSI's. I think I will stop watching CBS because they took off Moonlight which was my very favorite show on TV, period but closely followed by CSI:LV. And Grissom was the reason for that. TV has not been the same since the strike & all they want to show is reality shows & game shows anymore & I'm sick of that. I think I may stop watching TV period if something doesn't change & soon.
TO THE PRODUCERS: Make that man an offer he can't refuse. When he goes so will most of the viewers! The other actors are important too but as a unit, together with Peterson although he is the main man. Think about a house. You have a board fall off here and there .The house still stands. You knock the main beam out and the whole thing falls apart.
No William Petersen (Grissom) no fan base.  It will surely fail.  I tried getting into CSI-Miami and CSI-NY, but they both pale in comparison.  The top actors are totally blah!  Can't see Marg H carrying this show either, let alone Eads.  Oh well, since I watch very little TV anyway, I'll just find more good books to read.  Better activity for my brain anyway!
Let's see- no grissam, no sara, no warrick, to me, equals not much of a show. This show, unlike law and orde (which I loved after Brisco came aboard), has developed an intricate relationship between the characters, all of them, that can't be duplicated by putting in new characters. Can't picture Kurt Russell (my maiden name, no relation, I know of), coming even close to the perfect timing and reactionary presence Petersen has. The rest of the cast is great but without their go-to guy, grissam,(Petersen), the show will surely suffer. With 3 of the main characters gone, the others will be flundering to make a meaningful connection storywise, to anyone new, that will hold viewers attention.  When pieces of a puzzle go missing, it ruins the whole puzzle. Good luck to Petersen, Fox and Dourdan! Been a nice ride! I will continue to watch and hope for the best!
CSI won't be the same without Gil. I was a little sad to see Sarah go, and I really don't get why people were so upset by Gil and Sara's relationship. It took up very little screen time and was set up from the first season. Unfortunately Gil aged faster than Sara so by the time they finally hooked up it looked a little strange. Anyway, I despise Horatio and am ok with Mac, but no one holds a candle to Gil.
First Sara leaves, then Gary Dourdan, and now Grissom?  I don't think so - not interested in this show anymore.
OMG OMG ... NO GRISSOM?!  He centered and provided the interaction between characters in the show to actually make it entertaining. He is the Yoda and the Shaolin Priest of CSI. At least they wont be trying to replace the character.  I do love the remaining cast but I just hope they don't try to copy the Grissom character. I will be watching with a critical eye on what they will be sending us. I'm sure everyone will.
I once had the pleasure of meeting William Peteresen in 2001 and he couldn't have been more nice in person and left a lasting impression on my wife and 14 year old daughter. He was standing in line in front of us to by Ice Cream when my daughter said, "Oh my god, look dad its Gil Grissom" he turned around and laughed and made small conversation with us. He even went so far as to buy our three sundaes. Watching him on TV these past 10 years was like watching a personal friend. I love the show but feel like everyone else. Without him, I hope this is the seasons last. Thank you W.P. for playing such a great character that everyone could admire.
No, say it isn't so!! I can't imagine CSI without Grissom.  Finding someone to move into his spot might just work but Wm. Petersen will be sorely missed.  I am a big fan of both CSI-Miami (and yes, I love David Carruso) and CSI-NY but can't imagine them without the leads (Carruso & Sinise).  Writing out the Sara character was a-ok with me.  She was a drag to the story line.  Please keep George Eads - he is absolute eye-candy.
There is no question that this show has seen its best days. The magic will depart for me when Grissom leaves for good. I didn't enjoy the shows when he was AWOL last season. Wherever William Peterson goes I will follow...
It definitely won't be the same.  Grissom and Catherine bounce off each other very well.  They are the only two characters that really make the show work.  Please, please, please don't replace him with another David Caruso!  YUCK!
Leave it to the powers that be in television to "destroy!" one of the few TV shows that make it worth turning the thing on for.  This is one of the three television shows I watch with any regularity because as a science teacher and person with some intelligence--there just isn't much to choose from. That's probably why they are taking Grissom off- he has a brain.   All the more reason to read a good book.
CBS finally came up with good winning combination shows which made them a top network again and for some reason cannot help themselves from trying to fix things that aren't broken. They are changing the dynamics of not only CSI but Criminal Minds, NCIS etc. We become loyal viewers because of the cast chemistry and the specific dynamics of the show and then they change evrything and the show no longer provides the same feelings and reasons we watched. I doubt seriously we will be watching any of the above shows this seasonand are much less apt to invest in any of the new offerings as they will only change them as well as soon as we commit to them. Anyone read a good book lately???????
William Petersen is charismatic as Grissom and that's what makes CSI work. Grissom keeps the team focused on the forensics, not all the glitz of Las Vegas crime scenes, etc. that gets in the way of the investigations. A word to the producers - PAY THE MAN MORE MONEY TO STAY!
All shows make major changes at some point in their running. CSI; Las Vegas has run for many years, outlasting most prime time shows. I can only imagine the major "burnout" after so many years of day to day performing. There will always be a new and upcoming audience that just may love the new changes. And, don't forget that Wlliam Peterson will be behind the scenes helping write and produce each show. That alone, sounds like a winner to me! He is so talented. As a great fan of his, on broadway, in movies, and on television, I wish him all the best, and thank him for entertaining us all these years.
Each character has a special place in my heart.. they all have their moments.. but Grissom's quirky intellectualism is the draw for the fans. Sure we all love Greg's goofieness and Nick is the boytoy.. personally Ive never liked Katherine much but she was never supposed to be off-beat. Warrick was a MUCH underappreciated favorite. Doc rocks period. Sara was is and always will be my favorite female on the show. Bringing in Malkovich or Fishburne or Russell is too much.. I think the producers are over-reaching. They need a lesser known but equally talented actor. Liev Schreiber wouldve rocked. CSI Vegas is the only CSI worth watching.. all the others try but dont even come close to being as good. I will like hundreds of thousands of others probably stop watching faithfully when Griss leaves. I friggin cried when Sara left and I probably will when Grissom leaves.. but Im a self admitted GIANT nerd so its all good. I will however give whomever they choose a chance..
Grissom IS the show.  The writing is great, but without Grissom to deliver, it won't be the same.  I'll be passing on it.   It would be like taking Gilligan off Gilligan's Island, Lucy off I love Lucy, Andy off of Andy Griffith or Laverne off of Laverne and Shirley.  It may as well be called CSI:Grissom.   You got nothin' if he aint there.
It's like when the LOCI rumors started that Vincent Donofrio would be leaving. He IS LOCI (no offense to the other actors). I'd never watch if he left.
NO,NO,NO!!!!  It was bad enough when they killed off the romance between Grissom and Sara.  NOW they want to take away the best part of CSI---the heart of CSI??  Please! I have watched the show since day one, and know it will not be as enjoyable without Grissom.  I tolerate the spin-offs which, though somewhat entertaining, do not have the chemistry the characters on the original have. SAY IT AIN'T SO???!!!
Jeff Goldblum would have been a great replacement, but one of those cop shows got him already.
No Grissom! I'm gone. Like it wasn't bad enough that they hooked him up with that whining Sara (how could they pick the most annoying woman to pair him with, this is Gil Grissom for pitys sake! If they had to, pick Lady Heather, Katherine, frankly ANYONE else but Sara!) And I too was hoping she was killed under the car by the miniture killer.  By God if they do have Grissom and Sara go off in the sunset together, well then there is no justice in CSI Las Vegas.  Mr. Peterson (Gil) you'll be missed.
The quirky yet highly intellectual Grisson was the only reason i was so glued to this show. No doubt we all learnt a lot and i agree with the writer - i'll stick around till he is there and then just watch Grey's, guilt free.
I too will miss Grissiom, but lets be fair, all of the CSI shows are for entertainment and compaired to the rest of TV thier all GOOD. Losing Grissiom will be a blow to the series, but if another strong character comes on then maybe it can survive. I was glad they got rid of Jorja Fox, she brought down the show, and they could do without Super Dave too. I'll keep watching and hoping CSI can make it.
I too am done with CSI. I loved Dourdan and Peterson. The rest of the cast were just pieces I tolerated to see my 2 favorite stars. But I have to disagree about CSI NY. I love Gary Sinise. Barbara
As a producer and creator who built the entire show around his character, you'd think William Peterson would recognize that the show just doesn't work without him. I like most of the other characters a lot, too, but Grisson is the intellectual, moral, and even comic center of the entire setup. It was a completely different show when he was gone for the short term a few years back, and it'll be different once again after he leaves. It might be a good show, but it won't be AS good, and certainly not the same.

As for the suggested replacements, I can't imagine why Kurt Russell is even being considered. Who's going to buy him as an egghead? Lawrence Fishburne would be my choice of the three (not that I think it'll matter that much in the end).
It will definitely be a different show without Grissom, but I knew this was coming; and with Sara gone, the show hasn't been the same anyway. I do hope they have a happy send-off planned for Sara and Grissom. And I will continue to watch because I like the format of the show. Hopefully, the new characters will be interesting and both Jorja Fox and Billy Petersen will return to guest star.
I definitely don't think the show will be the same.  How can it?  I loved Grissom's nerdiness and random facts he knew because of his background.  I will also miss Warrick (He was my favorite character).  I like the other characters, but I watched for Warrick and Grissom.  I'm hitting the DVD's!
Petersen's portrayal of Grissom is nuanced -- low key and thoughtful, to counterbalance the glitter and absurd pace in which DNA evidence is available in minutes. The Hodges character can be annoying, but that's his job in the cast, and could morph into a more considerate and responsible character (possibly due to a crisis that awakens these traits in him); so could Greg. We will certainly miss Grissom, and if other characters don't develop into interesting and complementary roles, CSI LV may indeed tank. But there is potential here, if the producers recognize what is needed and don't give us more trivial characters of whom we could care less.

I'm not quite willing to give up on it, but I will expect more meaty characters or what will be the point? I admit that the chances of this may seem slim...
The producers should consider Kevin Spacey as the next male lead CSI.
Anytime an actor tries to hold up a show for more money or feels that the show cannot go on without them, he/she should have their heads examined.  Look at Star Trek:TNG, Star Gate, to name a few.  There have been hundreds of series held at bay by actors who thought they were better, indispensible, or tried to "extort" the producers for higher salaries.  Personally, Catherine and Nick are far more enjoyable to watch then Grissom.  Peterson had a gold mine there, why give it up.  I would take the role and keep it forever, if asked (that won't happen).  There used to be a chemistry between the cast, over the past few years that chemistry has dwindled.  NOW CSI: New York has the best cast and the best chemistry.  Rather have Fishburne in the cast, or go for James Earl Jones - even better.  I won't miss Peterson.  Or brig Sinese from New York to Las Vegas.  Peterson ticked me off when he would not guest on CSI: Miami when it premiered. As for Caruso, I hope that was a fatal wound
Noooooooooo!!! They can't get rid of Grissom...like others before me have said, He IS CSI!!  I will probably stop watching the show if he leaves, I can't even watch the other CSI shows, because it's just not the same.  The producers are making a HUGE mistake!!
Huge, Huge mistake!!
My grandaughter is heartbroken.  She didn't care when other s left but Gil is the heart of the show.  She loves him as do I.  It doesn't mean we will necessarily stgop watching but.......if the quality goes down we will lose interest.  It will be interesting to see how they make this come out.  If they can't make it come out right then the show will fail
