Manly shows women love

Posted: Thursday, July 24, 2008 6:00 AM by Anna Chan

When the topic of girly-girl TV shows comes up, the same series are often mentioned: “Sex and the City,” “Desperate Housewives,” “Ugly Betty” and the like. They all tend to feature a strong female cast, drama-rific plotlines, modern-day knights in shining armor and often, excellent wardrobes and shoes to die for.

But there are also a slew of “manlier” shows, both currently on-air and retired, that can really appeal to women, me included:

“Queer as Folk”
OK, this former Showtime series isn’t such a stretch. After all, it’s basically “Sex and the City” for gay men, starring hot guys and loaded with drama and humor. (I’m not sure all girls would be able to stomach the scene in which Peter Paige’s Emmett is “interviewing” potential roommates in his kitchen.) Adding to the girly-girl argument, resident heartthrob Gale Harold has joined the cast of “Housewives.”

“Nip/Tuck”
Two rich male doctors, fancy cars, hot women with giant breasts and plenty of blood in the O.R. … Doesn’t sound too girly, does it? But oh, it is. The FX series is chock-full of sexy (and shocking) drama of the family and best-friend variety. And the presence of Dr. Christian Troy’s abs alone can certainly draw the female demographic, though his Michael Jackson-lookalike son, Matt, is a bit creepy. You can be sure I’ll be crying into my scrubs when the show ends after next season.

“Rome”
Honestly, had I not managed – barely – to stomach the bloodbath of the opening battle in the pilot episode of this genius HBO series, I would’ve missed out. (Sadly, it lasted only two seasons.) It’s a tale of duty and friendship between two soliders, set in the politically violent days of the Roman Republic. Yet, the female characters who schemed behind their men helped make this show a can’t miss for me. The perfectly chiseled bodies didn’t hurt, either.

“Law & Order: SVU”
When I’m looking for something girly to watch, crime dramas don’t usually make the list. But Det. Olivia Benson (played by Mariska Hargitay) is an inspiration. Not only does she always look gorgeous, she can more than hold her own in a male-dominated profession and is smart to boot. Unfortunately, A.D.A. Casey Novak is too whiny for me, so the show isn’t on my “must watch” list anymore. But if I’m flipping channels and catch a glimpse of Det. Elliot Stabler (played by Christopher Meloni), helloooooo! I’m glued again.

“Oz”
This violent-as-all-hell prison drama is probably the biggest stretch on my list. The HBO series chronicles the daily life of Aryans, mobsters, corrupt corrections officers and other sketchy inhabitants of Oswald Maximum Security Correctional Facility. If you have trouble stomaching the gory operations of “Nip/Tuck,” good luck sitting through a bloody AND violent fight on “Oz.” But again, gripping plotlines are the hook, as is a totally nude and very buff Chris Meloni.

Hmmm. Looking over my list, it seems that perhaps hot men and well-written plots will get me and my friends to tune in, regardless of whether the show is geared toward men or women.

My 'manly' show that I watch as a woman is Deadliest Catch. I have the utmost respect for the men that risk their lives every year to bring us our food. Stay safe guys!
Hmm...well I'm the one that watches CSI, Deadliest Catch, and the crazy Japanese game shows with a high personal injury rate (Unbeatable Banzuke and Ninja Warrior specifically).
My husband is the one that religiously watched Sex in the City when it was on as well as Grey's Anatomy. (urp)
Somehow I don't think gender dynamics apply to our tv watching.
It's Prison Break for me!!
I have always loved Entourage; HBO has a good track record on making shows that appeal to large demographics, though.
I'm not a regular viewer of Deadliest Catch, but I do like it when I watch it.  I also love SVU and CSI.   HBO's entourage is another must see for me, even though it is often about boys behaving badly. I also used to love MTV's Jackass -- although I am female and older than the target demographic (which must have been 12-20 y.o. boys)!
umm... what about Entourage?  And along with Dirtiest Catch, I love Dirty Jobs... Mike Rowe is a hottie.
I was psyched to find out after two seasons of staying up late to watch Top Gear on the BBC that my wife enjoys it just about as much as I do. Getting her to sit through an hours long show about cars each weekend makes for a nice break after our chores and gets me out of insufferable cooking channel Jello mold bake-offs!
I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who watches "manly" shows!  My guilty secret pleasures are watching Ice Road Truckers (this season driving on frozen ocean); Dirty Jobs (with Mike "Cutiepie" Rowe); and Dog, the Bounty Hunter (yeah, even with his bleached hair and dangly earrings).
I've always enjoyed Star Trek (cable means it's on several times a week)... as for shows that are actually being made now, I love those prison documentaries on MSNBC and Deadliest Catch! I've never liked soap operas or chick movies at all. It just doesn't do it for me.
I love to watch the UFC on Spike TV!

All those buff guys oiled up & wrestling around on the floor...tee hee
Man vs. Wild is great.  Bear is hot and brilliant and usually gets down to his birthday suit within the first 15 minutes of the show....gotta love it.
Uh...how is Queer as Folk considered a "manly" show?
In Canada: Holmes on Homes.
My husband and I both love Supernatural and Ghost Hunters - and I'm a total sci fi geek (love Star Trek, Stargate etc.).
I concur with Dirty Jobs, Deadliest Catch, Ice Road Truckers and I will add American Chopper (I love Rick) and Mythbusters! I wasn't one who watch Sex in the City, Ugly Betty, Ally McBeal or even Boston Legal.
I live up where the Ice Road Truckers show was filmed. Noone up here really understands why people enjoy watching it so much haha. Oh, and the making of the roads is WAY more dangerous than actually trucking on them.

I'm a sucker for good crime shows, Law and Order, CSI, anything like that. I also love action movies. Give me Gladiator or Die Hard instead of Sex and the City any day.
Deadliest Catch and anything UFC will stop me in my tracks every time. It doesn't even matter how many times I have seen the reruns, I'll still watch.
Kudos for putting "Oz" on this list.  I, a female, LOVED that show.  It took me a long time before I could accept Christopher Meloni and J.K. Simmons in nice-guy roles because they made such an indelible impression in their "Oz" roles.
I love Dirty Jobs.  Mike Rowe is a hottie.  I also love Deadliest Catch (Mike Rowe also does voice over for this show!) And Man vs. Wild is exceptional!
I am surprised that you did not included HBO's "The Wire", Showtimes "Dexter", and Sci-Fi's "Stargate franchise" on the list of manlier shows women love.  I am addicted to all of them.  My boyfriend and I are so sad that "The Wire" is no longer on TV.  I must admit I will miss the character Omar.
I watch the First 48. I do watch a lot of the original L&O, L&O SVU, L&O CI. I use to watch Homicide Life on the Streets too. I don't know why I love these shows, but I just do. I find them very fascinating.
CSI, all the L&Os, but my favorite is CI.  But my secret vice is the lumberjack competitions.
I'd add Ninja Warrior and Most Extreme Elimination Challenge to that list.  Good clean fun!
I'm with Bear Fan - I have a crush on Bear Grylls too.  Will watch it every week, even when he is eating a llama's eyeball.  Oh and Star Trek TNG and Voyager.  Love it love it love it.
What about Rescue Me? Bad boy humor that still makes me laugh out loud.
Queer and Rome-LOVE IT!
And for those who asked, Queer is a Manly Show because as in every relationship someone always has to 'play' the "Man" part and in Queer the ones playing the "man" are as manly as you can get them.
Love, love, love the crazy Japanese game shows!!  Favorites: Unbeatable Banzuke, Ninja Warrior and Most Extreme Challenge (MXC).  Very entertaining!  I agree with the person who said that gender doesn't really have anything to do with what TV shows we watch.  Of course, my husband and I don't each always want to watch the same shows that the other does.  But the majority of shows that we watch, we both enjoy, regardless of who the target audience is.
I love The Unit and 24.  And my husband loves them, too!  They have great characters, great plot twists, and strong, smart, handsome men.
Anything WWE is my manly pleasure - yes it is fake (kayfab for you wrestling nerds) - but it is like a soap opera and no more phony then any sitcom or drama on television!! Not to mention the men...GOOD GOD THE MEN!!!
the BEST: deadliest catch, man vs. wild, dirty jobs, law & order svu.  the worst -- crap i've never watched: sex and the city, desperate housewives. get a life and get real, whiny women don't interest me.
What could possibly be the point of making a list of "manly" shows women like if the first show on the list is Queer as Folk?  Seriously, Sex and the City is manlier (and no, that's not a SJP-looks-like-a-drag-queen-joke... even if she does).
24 and Dexter are two of the best shows on TV and I NEVER miss them.  They're both violent (especially 24) so I guess this qualifies them as "Manly Shows".
Another vote for Ice Road Truckers. Alex is my fav. Hugh (the Polar Bear) may be an SOB, but you always know where he stands on things. And he doesn't whine about garbage runs the way Rick does.
I watch very few girlie girl shows.  I love Stargate, Battlestar Galactica, All three CSIs, Nip/Tuck, The Shield.
How did Deadliest Catch not make that list?

Now *that* is some of the coolest stuff on TV.
Ice Road Truckers, Dirty Jobs, Deadliest Catch, Family Guy, Weaponology, All the Law & Orders - you name it and I watch it w/my husband.  I have to disagree w/ the above mention - Nip/Tuck is SO God awful - it makes me cringe and I hate all the characters.  I realize it is supposed to be full of satire and irony and is a commentary on today's society, etc. etc. but it still comes across as shallow.  Both of the male doctors are YUCKY not hot.
I think I just like good tv doesn't matter if it is geared toward a man or a woman.  I like The New Life of Old Christine and Sex in the City just as much as Deadliest Catch and Myth Busters.
I watch Prison Break, CSI, SVU, American Gladiators, Queer as Folk (love Gale Harold), Burn Notice, and I'm sure they're a few others. I've also never seen an episode of Sex and the City.
I absolutely love L&O SVU. Chris Meloni is gorgeous! I think another discovery channel favorite is Mythbusters. Not sure if everyone would call it a manly show, but most of the people I know who watch it are guys. Deadliest Catch & Dirty Jobs are great too.
I watched one episode of Sex & the City and I thought it was the stupidest thing I ever saw.  But that's always the case with shows that are geared towards women.  They're always awful.  I'll take a "manly" show over a "women's" show anytime.
Deadliest Catch and Dirty Jobs for sure.  Mike Rowe is hot, hot, hot!

Deadliest Catch and Man vs. Wild!  I'm a Discovery junkie!
I kind of like The Unit. I am totally on board with Deadliest and Mythbusters too!

Gladiator = my favorite movie of all time!
Dirty Jobs (Mike Rowe!!) also loved Deadwood, something about Al Swearegen gets to me!
Dexter too....also Deadliest Catch...
No Family Guy?
I'm actually really surprised at this list. I wouldn't consider any of these shows to really be "manly." Just because they may involve male primary characters, crime/violence, and/or war - does that make them manly? SVU may be a 'cop' show but it's incredibly empowering towards women (female lawyers/cops/protection of victims). As for "manly" shows that I love - Top Gear is on my list. I'm not particularly interested in fast cars or fancy cars, but something about this show is very addictive.
For me it's (and was) The Wire, Law and Order, all of the MSNBC documentaries (most notably the Lockup shows...when these come on, I simply HAVE to watch, and especially now since the new season has started).  I also like Adult Swim on Cartoon Network late night.  Adult Swim is definitely a guy thing (in my opinion), but I just can't get enough of Family Guy and Aqua Teen Hunger Force! (yeah, I'm a bit of a grown-up kid, too).
I get enough drama here in the office so I don't watch "girly" TV. I enjoyed Oz too - there is always the "LOL hey! I've seen that guy naked" comment when the actors appear on other shows!
I love all the Law & Orders and the CSIs, as well as Without a Trace, Cold Case, The Closer, Saving Grace (although I'd like it more if Grace quit smoking), NCIS, Criminal Minds, all the Star Trek series, Ghost Whisperer, and Monk. I hate reality shows of any kind, so Ice Road Truckers doesn't work for me. I enjoy good documentaries, like they had on History channel and Discovery before they went overboard on reality shows.
My favorite "manly" shows would definitely be Man vs. Wild, Dirty Jobs, and of course The Family Guy. As far as Law and Order is concerned, I would say men and women watch equally. Kind of like other mystery shows (Matlock, CSI, Monk, etc.)
