Manly shows women love

Posted: Thursday, July 24, 2008 6:00 AM by Anna Chan

When the topic of girly-girl TV shows comes up, the same series are often mentioned: “Sex and the City,” “Desperate Housewives,” “Ugly Betty” and the like. They all tend to feature a strong female cast, drama-rific plotlines, modern-day knights in shining armor and often, excellent wardrobes and shoes to die for.

But there are also a slew of “manlier” shows, both currently on-air and retired, that can really appeal to women, me included:

“Queer as Folk”
OK, this former Showtime series isn’t such a stretch. After all, it’s basically “Sex and the City” for gay men, starring hot guys and loaded with drama and humor. (I’m not sure all girls would be able to stomach the scene in which Peter Paige’s Emmett is “interviewing” potential roommates in his kitchen.) Adding to the girly-girl argument, resident heartthrob Gale Harold has joined the cast of “Housewives.”

“Nip/Tuck”
Two rich male doctors, fancy cars, hot women with giant breasts and plenty of blood in the O.R. … Doesn’t sound too girly, does it? But oh, it is. The FX series is chock-full of sexy (and shocking) drama of the family and best-friend variety. And the presence of Dr. Christian Troy’s abs alone can certainly draw the female demographic, though his Michael Jackson-lookalike son, Matt, is a bit creepy. You can be sure I’ll be crying into my scrubs when the show ends after next season.

“Rome”
Honestly, had I not managed – barely – to stomach the bloodbath of the opening battle in the pilot episode of this genius HBO series, I would’ve missed out. (Sadly, it lasted only two seasons.) It’s a tale of duty and friendship between two soliders, set in the politically violent days of the Roman Republic. Yet, the female characters who schemed behind their men helped make this show a can’t miss for me. The perfectly chiseled bodies didn’t hurt, either.

“Law & Order: SVU”
When I’m looking for something girly to watch, crime dramas don’t usually make the list. But Det. Olivia Benson (played by Mariska Hargitay) is an inspiration. Not only does she always look gorgeous, she can more than hold her own in a male-dominated profession and is smart to boot. Unfortunately, A.D.A. Casey Novak is too whiny for me, so the show isn’t on my “must watch” list anymore. But if I’m flipping channels and catch a glimpse of Det. Elliot Stabler (played by Christopher Meloni), helloooooo! I’m glued again.

“Oz”
This violent-as-all-hell prison drama is probably the biggest stretch on my list. The HBO series chronicles the daily life of Aryans, mobsters, corrupt corrections officers and other sketchy inhabitants of Oswald Maximum Security Correctional Facility. If you have trouble stomaching the gory operations of “Nip/Tuck,” good luck sitting through a bloody AND violent fight on “Oz.” But again, gripping plotlines are the hook, as is a totally nude and very buff Chris Meloni.

Hmmm. Looking over my list, it seems that perhaps hot men and well-written plots will get me and my friends to tune in, regardless of whether the show is geared toward men or women.

My favorite all time shows are Deadliest Catch and Dr. G. Medical Examiner. I have seen every episode of Deadliest Catch and will watch them over and over! Dirtiest Jobs too. And have to agree with the other person that said American Chopper for Rick! Why else would we watch???
I love Dexter.  My husband and I can not get enough.  Also Deadliest Catch and Dirty Jobs are great.
The Shield ladies and gentlemen....fantastic manly show.

Also, Battlestar Galactica and Star Trek TNG
I love Mythbusters, although I agree with Marla that just because shows have lead male characters or are crime shows does not make them "manly".  I wouldn't call The Closer (focused on crime but with a female lead) a girly show or a manly show, just a good one!
Never could warm up to SEX, DESPERATE or BETTY but oh that Mike Rowe and his dirty jobs (let's hook him up on CLEAN HOUSE as a guest?) and Dog's clan. Love Mrs. Dog (Beth) because she's def a woman and holds her own around these bad boys.
These are all great choices but you forgot to mention Deadliest Catch.  Those are real men truly risking their lives so I can enjoy my delicious Alaskan crab. Yum!  Deadliest Catch is currently my favorite "manly" show.
Mike "YUMMY" Rowe, the hottie from Cash Cab, Dexter, The Tudors, and of course Christopher Meloni from OZ (I sooo wanted to go to prison if men there were like this!!)....all of them make me VERY happy to be a woman!
The Unit and 24 all the way!!!!

And I'd love to help Mike Rowe scrub up after a dirty job any day....hubba hubba
I don't watch any of the shows you mention in your article, but I do watch "Deadliest Catch".
My god the things those men go through. They have all my respect and prayers everytime they go out on their boats.
Stay Safe guys.
Deadliest Catch!!!!  My favorite!!!!!  I watch them over and over.  I have no idea what the attraction is but it facinates me.  Love Mike Rowe's Dirty Jobs, too!  I love the Enterprise reruns, too.
I've never watched any of the shows on your list.
Best shows:
Dirty Jobs
MythBusters (Jamie and Adam ROCK!)
Deadliest Catch is great!
Criminal Minds
Nip/Tuck (although it has gotten too crazy over the few 2 seasons)
Rome was excellent.
Miami Ink

I can't believe you guys are sucked into Man Vs. Wild!  I would be able to do all that stuff too if I had a camera crew following me around!  If you want to see how it is really done, watch SurvivorMan with Les.  He does everything on the show from the filming, narrating, and carrying the equipment!  Now, that is a real man!
I have to add a funny aside to this story--my husband is completely hooked on Project Runway and the movie Legally Blonde. He started watching these with my daughter, and now he's done for. He also enjoys America's Next Top Model. So now I get no complaints when I watch old Star Trek reruns. I have DIRT on him!
Cold Case shows America's Top Model solving the problem of history.  Numbers shows menshes packing heat.  Flashpoint shows, after all, you'll come for the fascism and stay for the bromance.
Deadliest Catch for me too, and never mind Mike Rowe i'll take that Hot Norwegian Sig Hanssen, thankyaverymuch!!!

can't stand the girly shows - and Nip/Tuck IS a girly show with all its phony boobs and phony drama. Couldn't even manage one episode w/o gagging.

OK OK i admit it. really i'm just a Discovery junkie all the way too.....
glad to see i am not the only girl into sci-fi (ghost hunters etc) and shows like man vs wild XMC or deadlist catch!!! i love the girlie shows too like greys and despeate housewives. I think i have a good mix of both! :)
I agree with Tiffiney from Memphis.  I watch Family Guy all the time with my husband.  It's totally offensive to women but I laugh every time.  Is that wrong??!!
My favorite "manly" show was HBO's "Deadwood"; also the late, great "Firefly".  Currently my fav is "Law & Order CI" ...love Vincent D'Onofrio!!
SVU (I agree, very empowering for women), NCIS, TSCC (The Sarah Connors Chronicles) WMC (Women's Murder Club) before they cancelled it, Stargate SG1 and Atlantis, The Family Guy, Futurama, Without a Trace, Dexter and Cold Case.
Ok, we left out The Sheild, I love that show!!  Of course SVU and CSI are in the top 5...
Deadliest Catch and OZ - oh yeah great shows.   I also like the Survivor Man and Man vs Wild, then again, I used to love THE MAN SHOW and hooked my hubby into watching it!

ziggy, zoggy, ziggy zoggy - hoi, hoi, hoi!
I LOVE Manswers on Spike! Finally the burning questions I have longed to hear the answers to but have been deemed socially unacceptable to voice aloud! No more will I wonder if I could survive on beer alone or what animal farts the most.  I'm totally addicted to Ghost Hunters and the Family Guy as well.
Top Gear, UFO Hunters, and Family Guy.  Yes, Kate, it is perfectly ok to like Family Guy, men aren't given a break either, it's equal lampoon for all!  I actually got my hubby started on Top Gear, it's brilliant!  I hate chick shows, except Bones.  That is a chick show, right?
What you got really right on this list was that 2 of your top 5 shows involve Chris Meloni, and let's face it - he's a very. very manly thing that women can't help but be drawn to.

And you can tune back in to SVU, Casey's gone as of the season finale, and they're bringing in some new chick. The new tart better keep her hands off my Meloni too though, because in the midst of Benson's crimefighting, the woman's waiting for some Stabler love, don't you think?
