Last chance to vote in commercial contest

Next Monday I'll announce the best and worst commercials in our annual summer contest. You've still got time to weigh in -- if you've spotted an ad lately that should contend for either title, post about it in the comments.

Before we get to that final commercial post, though, there are a few topics left to touch on.

Humor in ads
Humor is so subjective. What makes me crack up may be incredibly unfunny to you. I like the concept of the cell-phone ads where families throw away their extra minutes, even though I hate the lecturey, witchy tone of the mom who yells at them for it. Remember the Geico cavemen ads? They started out pretty funny, but got old quickly (don't even mention that horrible sitcom they spawned). Lots of readers think the unibrow woman who uses Planters cashews as perfume  is funny, but I just roll my eyes at that one. One ad series I am enjoying is the one where you see someone's phone talking about how their alter ego isn't going to get the phone call to go do something fun (Motorhead tickets!) because he or she can't get a signal wherever they are. Which ads make you laugh, and which supposedly funny ads just leave you cold?

Regional ads
I don't think it's fair to have an ad that can only be seen in one state contend for the title. But if I did, I'd have to nominate the Washington State Lottery ad from my own state. The video seems to have been yanked offline, but it shows people hang-gliding with flightless birds. At first I was horrified, because I imagined the birds were as scared as I would be if someone forced me to go hang-gliding. But then I watched it again, understood the concept (these birds are finally being allowed to fly), and noted that the birds actually looked pretty happy to be soaring. I'm really not sure why the Lottery has been so diligent about yanking the ad offline, but that's not my call. Tell us about your favorite -- and least favorite -- regional ads in the comments (describe them well if no links are available).

People I hate in ads
Sometimes I see an ad and just take an instant dislike to it because I can't stand the main actor. I guess that's not really fair, and I can't explain it, but personality is everything in these spots and some commercial actors just lack it. Examples:

--The gorgeous woman in the eyeglass ad (apparently it's South African model Tanit Phoenix) who brags about how she depends on her eyes to "capture the wonder of this planet." There's just something so pompous and fake about describing your job in that way, and I don't buy her as a working photographer for one minute.

--I'm also annoyed by Kitty, the woman who details how many cigarettes she smokes each day and exactly when she smokes each one, and ends the ad by going to her doctor because it's "my time to quit." I'd bet Kitty never succeeds.

--The chirpy model who blathers that "you've got to put Mercury on your list" bugs me too, because no, I don't.

--Sally Field. Look, I loved her in "The Flying Nun" and even now on "Brothers & Sisters," but those ads where she talks about how onerous it is to take one pill a week  get on my last nerve. Can it, Gidget.

--I'm also annoyed by the gray-haired dad who talks about how he and his wife had to postpone their lovin' because their college-age daughter surprised them with a visit. TOO MUCH INFORMATION, Daddy-O! Other erectile dysfunction ads bug me, but this one, with the daughter breaking up mom and dad's planned mattress meeting, is just weirder than the rest.

Tell me I'm not the only one with irrational dislikes of commercial spokespeople, and discuss anything else about TV ads in the comments.

I love the "alter-ego" cell phone ads.  My fave of those right now are the ones about some beaches being more naked than others in Spain.  "Mommy, why are those people naked?"  Makes me chuckle every time...
The camera ad with Ashton Kutchner just cracks me up.  He is just so sweet and goofy!  I had an uncle who was a photographer and he acted pretty much the same way at every family gathering. This ad always makes me smile.
No you're not the only one with an irrational dislike of a commercial spokesperson.  I've honestly never met a single person that likes Billy Mays...or whatever his name is...the Oxyclean guy that yells everything.  My fondest tv land wish is to grab him by the ear and say, "Shh...use your *inside* voice".
And on a different note I love the ad series with the Motorhead tickets but my husband and I are trying to figure out the new one about Spain's beaches and how some are "More naked than others."  Why does the dad's alter ego keep looking down at the end there...is he chagrined at what his family saw or is he a little too "happy" about not getting the message about those beaches?  Kinda weird...
The girl in the deodorant commerical who yells for a taxi then says to the driver "No thanks, I'll walk". She also lifts her arms and smells her pits...what an idiotic ad...
One more candidate for best and worst ads.  I saw a new commercial the other night with Neil Patrick Harris, where he was telling us to buy some form of deodorant, and we could trust him because he used to be a fake doctor, or something like that.  It's one of the funnier ads I've seen in a long time, and NPH's fake pomposity helps to make it well worth watching.

For new worst ad, the KY commerciela for "his and her" KY's where they talk about how each one gives them a different feeling, as they are taking their clothes off and hopping into bed.  Just a little too much information, there.
i really really dislike the new Secret Deodorant ads w/ the girl walking around showing her pits to any & everyone. Hailing a taxi - no I'd rather walk. Passing a cop car, sticking her arms out & squeeling "I'm Innocent." Saluting the doorman. Just shut up already.  Aren't Secrets supposed to be kept quiet?????????????????????
LOL Gael, I hate the pretentious nature photojournalist too!  I also hate (though I believe this one's no longer airing) the smug woman who sneaks out of her apartment in the middle of the night and sits in her car.
Whilst I distrust the company concerned the new add for Verison, where the kids send their parents off to work with new phones is amusing (and would be funnier if it wasn't so true!)
I'll put my vote in for the Discovery Channel "Boom De Ya Da" commercial.  Gives me the warm fuzzies every time I watch it!
My favorite commercials are the Mac-PC commercials, but of those, my favorite is the one with the cheerleaders, first cheering "Mac is #1! Mac is #1!" and then PC reminds the cheerleaders that they are supposed to be cheering for him. They continue with "PC is #2!  PC is #2!"

Least favorite are the Taco Bell commercials where the woman carries tacos with bacon in her purse while out at a club to attract men. Yuck! Also, any ads with the Burger King plastic-headed guy are low in my book...
Chad and the rest of the cell phone company dorks have worn out their welcome. I am also over the State Farm girl who can't figure out what deductible she can afford.  Seriously, if you can't choose a deductible for your own car insurance maybe you shouldn't be driving? Love the Heineken commercial with people passing along the beer, sharing the "love" so to speak. Also, love the Valspar paint commercials with the squares cut out of nature becuase they are beautiful and timeless.  They do inspire me to buy paint!
Nominating/voting for:
Discovery Channel for their "Boom Dee Ah Dah" series of ads. It not only works the song seamlessly into the commercial, it also showcases the channels shows, all the while showing how great Earth really is!
Sometimes I think if I see the caveman dancing one more time I'll throw somethng at the TV.  And those ED ads that wind up with the couple in old fashioned bathtubs holding hands. Frankly, I can't think of any of those "talk to your doctor about....(name the drug of choice)" that aren't extremely annoying.
I don't drink, but I must admit I like most of the Bud ads, especially with the Clydsdales. And I still like the Gecko ads.
And how about the car ads cutting down on their speed demon driving.  It's criminal and stupid in this day and age to sublimily promote such reckless behavior, not to mention the cost in gas.
Enough.
one of my favorites is the "active gas pump nozzle" with the tag line "gas pumps hate us" - i think the ad is for honda and their 30 mpg vehicles.  i expecially like the one where the nozzle lets the air out of a tire while the driver is getting a sandwich (or paying for gas?) and the new one i saw today when the nozzle went behind the vehicle and unhitched the owner's boat.  destructive?  yes.  but so funny lol.
I love the Ron is a dillweed commercial. That one just cracks me up. Those alter ego ones are among some of the best recently
Favorite Ad:  Baby E-Trade ad with the clown he rented with his extra 'coin'...Hilarious!

Favorite Campaign:  The ATT ads with the phone/alter egos talking are great and original, but they still won't make me switch to ATT.  The one that cracks me up every time is the dad looking for his daughter up at make-out point.

Least Favorite ad:  The Saab ad that repeats the same line over and over.

Least Favorite campaign:  All of the Erectile Dysfuction ads bug me, but particularly the 'Viva Viagra' ad.  I thought they retired it, but then they brought it back.  Who ever thought that up should lose their job.
Here are three to hate: Freecreditreport.com.  Leaving aside for a moment the fact that you have to pay to enroll in a pricey plan in order to get their "free" service, the whole use-us-or-lose premise is false and just plain offensive.

Enjoy: the Swiffer ads with the old mop or duster getting dumped, fired, convicted etc.  The new one with the tearful mop trying to be taken back isn't as funny - this campaign may have run its course.
I cannot stand the Mike's Hard Lemonade commercials where the young dopey guy tries to come up with new ideas and gets bullied by the other two guys.  It just seems like it would be something you would see in a school yard, where it is also not appropriate.  And then they messily pour the beverage in a pint glass and slam it down on the counter like its a big macho drink.
The commercial I absolutely hate is the Progressive insurance ones with that annoying clerk with dark eyeliner and red lips. I could just jump through the screen. I change it as soon as I see her. I think they should come up with something that doesn't turn people off the minute it comes on.
Does anyone know why the Cialis ads have people sitting outdoors, in bathtubs watching the sunset?  I don't get it. A hottub maybe but bathtubs?
While many are tired of the erectile dysfunction commercial (don't get me wrong I am too) I am even more so tired of any sanItary product commerical. I remember one for Always and the girl jump up and held  apd up in the air to stop a water tower leak. These commerical are just stupid. Woman already had that certain time of the month. It isn't anything that we want to talk about any other time.
I'm sure they have both been mentioned many times, but I currently have three faves:

1.  The cingular ad with the minutes that were from September.  The kids voice when he says he doesn't want to use them just makes that whole commercial!

2.  Also for a wireless service (Cingular maybe?) the one where the dad takes his little girls sock monkey and sends the little girls pictures of it actually chokes me up.

3.  The ad for Liberty Mutual in their series about taking care of your fellow man featuring the young lady in the wheelchair.  She struggles through getting down the steps, the pouring rain, and a gate that is closed.  It's revealed at the end she went through all the hassle to vote.  Kinda makes you think we all need to have a little more civic pride.

I also love the boom di yada commercials for discovery!
Football commercials are back - while I'm happy to be able to watch the NFL again, I'd rather not be subjected to the Manning Brothers' commercials.  I saw one last night where the two are bored not playing football so they are doing everything from thumb war to Hungry, Hungry Hippos.  The commercial ends with Peyton whining "I miss football" and Eli responding "Me too".

My husband & I both hate that new Secret Deodorant commercial where the girl is walking down the street high-fiving a guy she doesn't know, hailing a cab & then saying "I'd rather walk" and jumping in front of a cop car with her hands up; all so she can show the world she has fresh armpits. It makes you wish the cops would just shoot her. That's the only thing that would redeem the ad & make it worth watching!
I hate the Lipozene ad with the scary woman in the purple suit. I hate ALL ads done by Burger King since they got the stupid suit. It is creepy how he keeps ending up on men's beds offering them food.
I haven't been to Burger King since.  There's the Bob commercials and all the ED commercials.
I'm not sure if I have seen it listed but I absolutely love the diaper commercial that shows the dad changing the baby boy and as soon as the diaper comes off the little baby sprays the room, but everytime the diaper covers the baby it stops, and the dad goes back and forth like that for a while until he finally picks up the baby and is amazed about how much the diaper holds.  Any one who has every changed a baby boys diaper can surely relate to that humor a little bit.  I just can't remember who the diaper commerical is for I am thinking Huggies.
The creepy ad for Orkin with the bug delivering the pizza.  It gives me the chills listening to that voice.
The Discovery channel 'I love the whole world' commercial. It doesn't matter how many times it is on, my family stops to watch it again.
WORST COMMERCIALS WITH CREEPIEST GUY!  "Hotels.com."  No women or families in the ads. Just the creepy guy stroking a fur coat [?!]; getting his leather jacket polished; having two guys bubbling up his hot tub.  Not if they were the last hotels on earth.  Slimy.
The shaving cream ad (Ax?) where the miniature women go up a guy's nose while he shaves.  They're supposed to represent the scent or something - I was so grossed out I didn't quite catch any much more after that.
I do love the phone commercials where the person has no signal and is missing out on something (#1 Phelps Fan!). They are really funny and cute. However, I think I love the Discovery Channel commercial even more. After all, the world is just awesome!! I can't get the boom di ada song out of my head which I think is a good sign for a commercial, it stays with you!
This is one I haven't seen before and I found it rather appalling. It's for one of those companies that offer cash for your old jewelrey/gold. Seling old jewelrey doesn't seem like a bad thing, but this commercial takes it too far. It starts badly with a husband keeling over at the kitchen table and his wife calling the company to sell the gold off his not-even-cold body and then veers into downright creepy with a caretaker lady coming after her elderly charge for her gold teeth. I'm sure it's supposed to be humerous, but I think it's WAY too much!

I am tormented to no end by the girl in the pediasure commercials that is sitting in the cart and chirping to her mom that she "doesnt like waffles" or she "doesnt like chicken". First, who doesnt like waffles, and second NO ONE CARES!
Hands down, the most annoying commercial to me is the Sleep Number ad featuring the girl band SheDaisy. Yes, the girls are attractive, and their song is a catchy little tune, but what drives me crazy is the utterly incomprehensible lyric that opens the ad:

"23 days gone by, why can't eagles fly?"

I just want to pull my hair out every time it's on...I can't seem to hit the mute button fast enough to avoid that part.

I also can't stand the smarmy self-immportant lady in the Jewelry Channel spot who preaches that women may not NEED jewelry, oh, but they WANT it...
I hate those Travelocity ads with the British gnome... First of all, I don't get gnomes.  They're ugly.  Are they supposed to be funny?  This gnome falls screaming off a cliff where he smashes into the rocky shore below.  What's the point of this?  Is it funny?
Can't STAND the Travelocity ad where the guy is trying to talk over the noise of a jackhammer. Were they a real married couple, I'd really feel sorry for the wife!
The ExtenZe commercial with Frank and Brigitte has got to be the creepiest thing I have ever seen. Everything about the guy reminds me of a child molester right down to his creepy, smirky laugh. And Brigitte looks like she has some kind of problem with her eyes...an attempt to be flirty gone WAY wrong.

Of course, Head On commercials have to be somewhere on the worst list. They even acknowledge that they suck by apologizing for how annoying they are. What a waste of advertising budget. I can just imagine that meeting, "Guys we need to buy more airtime to apologize for how horrible our commercial is about to be"

I haven't been to impressed with commercials this year, but E*Trade's Mobile Baby 2008 is my current favorite. I love the voice actor they used, and "Hey girl, can I hit you back?" has got to be the funniest line out of all their E*Trade baby commercials.

I like the free-credit-report-dot-com ads with the catchy litte tunes sung by the guy who manages to sound chipper and forlorn at the same time.
I LOVE the Huggies commercial.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXnRuyJZkUw   HILARIOUS!  Yes, I do have a 7 month old baby, but I think even non-parents would find it funny.

I hate all commercials.  They take up to much time in our daily viewing schedule.  I would rather have more time to watch Survivor or Big Brother or The Simple Life.  Programs that have social values that this country needs. Jackass, Fear Factor, WWF wrestling and so on.  In heaven I will get to watch these programs 24/7/365.  If, by some unfortunate likely hood I should end up in Hell,  I will be forced to watch unending reruns of Feminine Deoderant Spray commercials during dinner.
Hi Gael, how's it going?  Thanks for another entertaining post.  By the way, I miss Multi-Link Mondays.  Any chance they'll be coming back more regularly?  Anyway, I really loathe that guy who yells about cleaning products (Billy something).  Every time his commercials come on, I immediately change the channel.  Talk about bad advertising!
What about the Orkin commercials with the lifesize cockroach trying to get unsuspecting people to let him into their house?  It's subtle, funny and very well done
The ads which cause me to use the mute button as soon I recognize the fellow hawking anything at antime is Billy "I can scream loud enough to annoy people for 16 miles" Mays.

I cannot stand the shaving cream ad with all the gorgeous women squirting foam. C'mon, the imagery is just too much. Now that my hubby has seen it a few times, he laughes now but when first hit the airwaves, he was as horrifed as I was. The Neil Patrick Harris ad is hysterical.
The commercial that gets my vote is the one where the mom is picking up her kid from school.  He is sitting all alone in the back seat, eating mac and cheese.  It's pouring down rain, and one of her son's friends asks for a ride home.  She looks around the nearly empty car and says, "I'm sorry, there's no room," implying that the product's taste is so big that it leaves room for nothing else.  She smiles apologetically and drives off, leaving the kid standing soaked in the rain.  Just gets to me on every maternal instinct I have left.  The other ad I've seen for the same product is nearly as bad.  A young man is eating lunch (mac and cheese) at an otherwise empty table.  An attractive young woman approaches and asks if she can eat with him.  His response is, "Sure, but where would you sit?" and she walks away.  Is this sad, or what?
I LOVE the commercial with the talking baby at the computer buying stocks.  I think they started airing during last year's Super Bowl.  I saw the one last night where he spits up and goes "whoa" in the middle of a sentence. Hysterical.  He's so cute and the lip movements are right on.

I also love the "dude" commericals where "dude" is the only word they use for the entire commercial.  VERY funny!
My current favorite is the JC Penney ad that is an homage to the Breakfast Club. Great movie, and great re-make of the song.
I hate the new commercial for Hertz (or is it Avis) where the yellow car is cutting in and out of traffic.  I think it is a very irresponsible commercial.  Sets a bad example
I have a new absolute favorite ad, but I'm afraid not everyone will have seen it, as it is only aired on MTV and Comedy Central. The first political commercial to be played during "The Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report," the pro-Obama "It Could Happen to You" commercial made my entire family burst out laughing.
You can see it on youtube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BncNpB6IZ9I .

On an additional note, the "Jack Sandwich" Jack-in-the-Box makes me shudder.
