Bad-idea cinema: 'Indiana Jones 5'?

Sometimes Hollywood can seem like a bad-idea factory, endlessly pumping out retreads, remakes and generally lame concepts. And when I happen across one of these bad ideas, my only recourse is the deep sigh. Here are a few items that have made me sigh lately:

(Spoiler alert! Beware of Batman item below if you haven't seen "The Dark Knight yet)

George Lucas wants to make ‘Indiana Jones 5’

AP
Raise your hand if you don't want another "Indiana Jones" sequel.

It’s really time for Lucas to move on. The man just can’t leave his films or their legacies alone. I’m shocked we haven’t been inflicted with a CGI-update of “American Graffiti” in which the cars can fly. It’s not that “Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” was a bad film, but it just felt completely unnecessary. Luckily, Spielberg is voicing some reluctance about getting involved in yet another sequel. And speaking of unnecessary Lucas projects – does the world really need the animated “Clone Wars” movie or TV series that are headed our way? Move on, George. You’ll never find a new idea to have a relationship with, unless you let the old ones go.

Howard Stern gets into the film biz
Why, oh, why can’t Hollywood leave ‘Rock N Roll High School alone? Howard Stern has decided to produce a new version of this film with Alex Winter of “Bill & Ted” fame directing. What current band could actually stand in for the Ramones? And what are the chances of the film retaining its druggy, surreal tone? Stern has more in store for unsuspecting theater-goers: A remake of “Porky’s.” What’s next  --a remake of the Tom Cruise classic “Losin’ It”? Talk about unnecessary.

Baffling Batman sequel rumors

Not only is there talk that Philip Seymour Hoffman and Johnny Depp are being considered for the Penguin and Riddler, respectively -- now, there’s the crazy rumor that Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Rachel didn’t die, and she will be back as Catwoman. Whaaaaa? Yes, Heath Ledger did an amazing job as the Joker, but that doesn’t mean Hoffman or Depp should try to follow in his footsteps.  And why would the uber-serious Nolan go for a character as comical as the Penguin? Depp could have an even more dicey time — he can either try to top Ledger in gravitas or do a camp version of the Riddler (somewhat like his Willy Wonka) that would have no place in Nolan’s bat-universe. As for Gyllenhaal being alive and turning into Catwoman — it just seems like a cheat that Nolan wouldn’t stoop to.

Oh, there are many more items that have made me sigh: Darren Aronofsky’s update on “Robocop” that’s in the works, the potential remake of the awful-to-begin with “Red Dawn,” Mike Myers in “Austin Powers 4,” Tim Burton’s big-screen version of “Alice and Wonderland” (with Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter), Martin Campbell’s remake of Hitchcock’s “The Birds,”  the remake of the ‘80s teen classic “Valley Girl” (with Nic Cage’s triangle of chest hair),  and many, many more. Think any of these are great ideas? Or maybe you’ve heard a rumor that’s made you sigh? Share your thoughts.

Can we keep Speilberg's hands off of any adult science fiction masterpiece?  He ruined War of the Worlds, Jurrasic Park, and the latest Indiana Jones was downright stupid.  The cheesy scene in the quicksand has to go down as one of the dumbest scenes ever filmed.
I'm from Johnstown, PA and a producer was out here last fall looking into making a remake of the 1977 movie Slap Shot.  The original was made here and was great comedy.   I think Johnstown would benefit from a new movie, but I just don't think a remake is needed.  Slap Shot 2 was so bad it only was released to DVD and it was filmed in Canada.
Regarding Batman sequels - Christopher Nolan has already stated that he doesn't feel that Penguin is a good villan and would not be using that character as it's too cartoony.  Bale has stated that he doesn't want the Robin character in the film series.  This was stated a while ago.  Since both of these people have a large say in the future direction of the series, I'm confident that the previously mentioned characters will not appear.
Did he say "Red Dawn" was awful?  Did he?  What 30-something guy still doesn't daydream of taking off with some friends and a couple .22's up into the hills to fend off the Ruskies?  Come on, who's with me?
I completely disagree with the Catwoman statement. It makes perfect sense. In the Tim Burton series these characters were created too "comically". Selena falls out of a window and is chewed on by cats - and then she's Catwoman!? Lame (although Pfeifer as Catwoman rocked). In the movie (don't read on if you haven't seen it) - Batman must choose between 2 people to save. He makes his choice and leaves Rachel to die. The character of Catwoman is a woman gilted by men - so what a perfect concept to introduct her character. Much more sophisticated then having her eat lots of catfood like Popeye!! And btw: The Batman series is all about the villians - what is Nolan suppose to do - not introduce new characters?? Duh.
All of the remake ideas, I agree, shouldn't be done except one.  I would actually like to see a remake of "Red Dawn."  The big problem with remakes is that they take great movies and poorly try to improve on them.  However, with "Red Dawn," you can take a crappy movie with an interesting idea and actually make it... good.
Catwoman would be great but I'm holding out for Scarlett Johannson to get that part (she's already worked with Nolan before in The Prestige)...on completely superficial reasons, bring back Two-Face.  Half of Aaron Eckhart is better than all of most actors :D
Why on earth do people keep trying to one up on Hitchcock.  You can't remake those.   The lighting and technology were perfect for those films.  And no one can recreate the atmosphere of Hitchcock.   As for the rest of the groan inducing films my solution is to just not watch them.  But don't we get curious about a new Indian Jones...if they were to do another film, wouldn't we go just to see what they had done.

I blame everyone who went to see the last Indiana Jones. They only made it to so that you would go and see it. And you did go see it, didn't you!? That's why there are so many bad ideas floating around; because you went to see them. Sometimes you should just wait to see it on DVD. If only to send George Lucas a message.
Will from Los Angeles - Actually, Batman didn't choose to let Rachel die.  Right after he stormed out of the interrogation room, Gordon asked him who he's going after, and Batman growls Rachel.  But the Joker switched the locations on him, meaning Batman went to the location the Joker said Rachel was, but it was where Harvey was instead.  That might tweak your Catwoman theory a bit.
More from the annals of bad remakes of bad movies: Death Race (2000) and Rollerball.
