Just talkin' about Isaac Hayes

It's been a bad weekend. They say celebrity deaths come in threes, but we've had two in two days and both were so unexpected, so early, that their load feels unbearably heavy. We don't need a third loss, thank you very much. First, genial and wickedly funny comic Bernie Mac, dead at 50. And now, legendary singer, songwriter, actor, and owner of many other entertainment job titles, the one, the only, Isaac Hayes, just 65.

Isaac Hayes will be missed.

Hayes had multiple careers, and was loved by multiple generations. My nieces and nephews know him mostly as the soulful rumbling voice of Chef on "South Park" -- at least until that dispute about Scientology led Hayes to leave the show. Before that dispute, he played Chef perfectly, and his gentle rumble of "Hello there, children" and his sex-filled songs will forever be a hilarious part of "South Park" lore.

But those of us who knew Hayes first and foremost as a musician, as a songwriter, as a singer, as the owner of that sweet voice that just rolled out of your radio in purring waves, we have a whole world of musical memories, too. Rappers, love-song singers, soul divas, they all owe much to Hayes and his brilliance.

A few years ago, I toured Stax Records in Memphis -- Soulsville, USA. The record label's amazing and rich history is displayed in albums, photos, memorabilia and other exhibits throughout its long and winding building. But my favorite exhibit, and the one I remember most clearly, came near the end. It was Hayes' peacock-blue 1972 Cadillac Eldorado, given to the singer by Stax for his chart-topping success. Stax's Web site calls it "the symbol of the style and cutting edge fashion that answered the question 'What's Soul?' in a way that only Stax and Isaac Hayes could." (Hayes' own Web site notes the car was liquidated by the IRS in 1977 before being restored and put on display at Stax in 2003.)

It's a sight to see, even today. Remember, these were the days before every soccer mom and dad installed a DVD player in their minivan. Hayes' gleaming car had its own bar, a clunky TV set ("clunky" being the only way TV sets came back then), and glinted everywhere with 24-karat gold. It was glorious and eye-popping and so exuberant you couldn't even call it over-the-top. You couldn't look at it and not smile.

And speaking of smiling, Hayes' 1969 album, "Hot Buttered Soul," labeled his voice perfectly. Can a voice be buttery? Yes, if it's Hayes' voice, and no one who ever heard it could deny that fact.

The car, the voice, the man -- they all came together in some perfect embodiment of cool that we are unlikely to see again very many times in our lifetime.

Share your memories of Hayes in the comments.

I first saw Isaac Hayes perform at the Soul Bowl in Tulane Stadium (New Orleans LA) in 1970.  I had actually come to see someone else, and wasn't familiar with Mr Hayes. But after that night....wow. I became a disciple of the Black Moses, and have been so ever since. I have seen him perform live 3 times in New Orleans and live by his music. I was so influenced by him that when I pledged my fraternity in 1977 we wore a robe designed from the Black Moses album cover. My favorite songs include "Never Can Say Goodbye", "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" and "Your Love is so Doggone Good". (yes, he did make other songs besides Shaft) I'm gonna miss Ike. Really miss him.  I had hoped to meet him in person one day and tell him how much his music has meant to me.  Feeling a litte empty now. "I just don't know what to do with myself".  Miss him already.
I met Isaac Hayes in 1990 in Atlanta Ga. I was a personal trainer for the Sporting Club at Windy Hill in Marietta, Ga. He asked me for some fitness advice and we soon became friends. He was a great guy with a wonderful sense of humor and he loved the ladies. He talked about his early years in song writing and had great stories about Marvin Gaye and Cutis Mayfield.I will never forget his red reboks that he worked out in. I didn't know him long but i will miss him and my prayers are with him and his family

Isaac Hayes was a well known artist in my home as I was growing up. My mom played his music like there was no other music around. He was a beautiful and gifted soul. You will be truly missed by your fans.
Isaac Hayes was a legend and is irreplacable. His musical genius will will on forever. Rest In Peace.
I learned tonight that our world had lost Isaac Hayes. Of all people in this world to tell us was the one and only BB King in concert at Wolftrap in Vienna, VA. Heaven is rockin tonight ! I just hope he doesn't tell anybody there to "shut your mouth". I also had the pleasure of assisting him in Memphis, Tennessee in 1971 at a department store (Lowensteins) I worked in while at Memphis State University. He had a young woman with him and she shopped in the junior department for two hours. When time came to pay the bill, Mr. Hayes approached the register and paid for her selections. He was kind, generous to a fault and very nice to do business with. A special part for me was I shook his hand and he said thank you for your time. He will be missed.
I can't ask why,but I grew up with his Music and he will be forever remembered in my heart, as the one of the icons of the music industry.
Actually, the FIRST celebrity to pass away was Estelle Getty (Sophia) from the Golden Girls, then Bernie Mac and then Issac Hayes. Any celebrity that dies now would start another "three"
i am a working bass player and i am saddend by the loss of issac hayes had the chance to play his club in chicago a few years back  it was a great experence  he will be missed
I will miss you Isaac.  I love what you have done with all of your music and films.  I salute you for bringing the World Literacy Crusade to the entire world.  You have left stellar examples for mankind to follow.  Blessings and love to your family and fans.

Regardless of my feelings about his leaving South Park, there is no doubt Mr. Hayes had great talent and drive.

About that "Soul Men" movie, given the recent course of events, I guess Samuel Jackson should just spend next week in bed -_-;
Issac Hayes delivered the commenement address at University of Memphis when my Doctorate Degree was confired.  He spoke eloquently of the importance of education and how his grandmother had influenced his work ethic. How wonderful to have seen this side of him!
" Something " in the way he delivered his music was more attractive than any other, and now that he's gone, " We're just one big unhappy family. " Ike,we heard you when you said, " What ever you do; You got to do your thing. " 'but now I just don't know what to do with myself' Thank you for your gift of music and songs. Sleep on Brother Sleep-on
To have known these two famous men was a great honor. They brought joy to the afican-american way of life. This lets us know that heaven is a rich place because it holds some of earths smoothest black men. Sympathy to the families, such a great loss.
Stay off those treadmills....
To Judy Bea in Schenectady, Issac did not sing 'Peace Train' at Woodstock.  He didn't even appear there, although he was the headliner of the WattStax concert in L.A. around the same time. You're thinking about Ritchie Havens, who was also bald headed.
Both Bernie Mac and Issac Hayes will be sorely missed by all. Many gerations will mourn the loss of these two Icons.... R.I.P. Our prayers go out to both families.  What tremendous losses.

I can't believe he's gone... I was so looking forward to hearing some more new material from Issac, who was enjoying a bit of an uptick in his career lately, with appearances on Conan O'Brian, playing with the Max Weinberg Seven, which was an phenomenol performance in every way.  When I was around 18, I dated an older, and white divorced woman, and she turned me onto Issac's 'Hot Buttered Soul' album, I became an instant fan for life, and played it for all my dates, and true loves thereafter.  I noticed everyone else here talks about playing it at parties they atteneded, or threw at home.  But, Issac was strictly reserved for my femal conquests, and he said the things I couldn't, and didn't know how to say, (except to mouth along with the record), because I was too shy and backwards.  I'm proud to say that never once did his musci ever fail to bring me the desired results that I was looking for when I went parking, or invited one over to my crib for a night of incense, red wine, and whatever else would soon follow.  I also used Isssac for my personal crash and burn in all matters of the heart counselor.  No one could speak to a guy's hurt and loneliness like Issac Hayes.  I feel sorry for young black people today, because they don't have any positive role models who teach love and understanding to their race like Black Moses did in in his entire career.  At least not from what I've seen in the last 20 years or so.  So, here's a toast to the man who started rap before it was even called rap, gave me comfort and pleasure for 38 years, and was responsible for more babies being conceived than probably any other artist in recording history.
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I have every recording that was ever released in America from Issac, of which there were amny over the years.  And, I hope and pray that there will be some unreleased things that make their way out to the public in the coming months ahead.  Surely someone who was as prolific and experimental as he had more stuff sitting in the vaults.
This is really sad news. Isaac Hayes was due to headline one of two stages of live entertainment in two weeks (Aug 24/25) at this year's Sunset Junction Street Fair in Los Angeles and alot of people (including me) were really looking forward to hearing him perform live.  His music lives on!  What a loss.  He was an amazingly talented man.
it's now soulsville. do your thang.
What a great loss,it just doesn't seem right but it's part of life. We were still hoping to see him in South Africa a few months ago, but the concert was cancelled. RIP, Black Moses,  I love all of your songs, especially "Believe in Me". You'll be missed dearly. Now...what is this about Bernie as well...Anyway God also loves those that are like flowers to us. REST IN PEACE BIG BROTHERS!!!!!We'll miss you both.

I'm 34 and I grew up listening to Issac, Teddy Pendergrass and Marvin Gaye in my Mom's house in NYC.  It was the most difficult call to make yesterday to tell her that Isaac was gone.  We were still coming to grips about Bernie's passing and now this.  This is depressing. And I just saw 'Escape from New York' earlier in the week where Isaac played the 'Duke of New York' holding the Prez for ransom.  He was a badass in that movie who held his own against fellow badasser Kurt Russell. He also did 'I'm Gonna Git You Sucka' with the Wayans Brothers, which was hilarious as well. We will have his catalog of work as his legacy as well as his work on South Park to make us smile.  R.I.P. Issac
Reading all the comments and some are making me laugh...but some are sad...bringing back so many memories....milk and coooookies! I stand accused. Man, it really makes you wonder when your time will come. When my wife heard Mac passed, she got real sad b/cit made her think about what could happen wneh you don't expect it....me , I just started to remember all I could about Mac. Issac was unexpected...like Luther, Gerald and Sean, George and James....

SOLD-OUT CONCERTS IN HEAVEN!!!!!
By the time I get to phoenix,I hpoe you'll be sitting on top of the mountain. I love you and will miss you Issac.Say hello to Bernie and all of the others. God wanted the Kings of comedy and A bad mother(shut youre mouth)up in heaven. I'll forever keep you in my prayers and on my CD player.
Ike,Ike,Ike! "By the time I get to Phoenix, she'll be rising ...." We grew up loving the music of the "Black Moses". It seems like just yesterday seeing Issac Hayes "whip'n" that organ and blow'n the Sax at a concert in Dallas Texas where so many of us then young cool "Hip Cat's & Chicks" enjoyed the buttery smoothness of his gifted vocals. Yes, he will be missed but his legendary music will forever live on. May God bless his family and consider ourselves blessed to have been part of his life. R.I.P. my Brotha'
Haven't read yet the role Isaac played in the movie "Escape From New York".Remember....?He was the big man in charge of all the action taking place in the jail.Loved his car,Cadillac outfitted with chandeliar mounted on front corner panels.Loved the car and his role. We're gonna miss this man.My brother and I would argue who was better Ike or Barry(Barry White).
He has inspired us all in many ways. I have become in my business would I would like to believe, as a modern day Shaft. I am living my childhood dreams out now. I will never forget Mr. Isaac Hayes (Shaft) He was an inspiration to us all.
Luther, Barry, James, Wilson, and now Isaac. If there's a rock n roll heaven.....
I myself is a big 70"s fan of Bro Isaac, from shaft to pheonix, and stand acuse, But for the first time this past christmas, I heard a chrismas carrol sung by him (oh the night, when christ was born)please if ever you get a chance, listen to it, I'm currently station in iraq in the military, and I sure plan on listening to it this chistmas, may god bless his family and all that is associated with this genious of a man that touch our lives, love you brother, and as the tears roll down my eyes (thanks) for the memories, rest in peace
Does anyone else remember this absolute genius sorta spoofing his "Shaft" theme on Late Night with Conan O'Brien?  Instead of talkin' 'bout Shaft, he flipped it into talkin' about Conan!?  That song was pure magic--- and so was Isaac Hayes!

Make that so IS Isaac Hayes.  That kind of genius is bigger than death, folks.  Same goes for Bernie Mac and George Carlin!
Losing the "Black Moses" is and forever will be the biggest loss in the music industry.  He broke all kinds of records for "Black Americans" during the early sixties and seventies.  I remember waiting in line at the University of Maryland back in the early seventies just to get a good look at what I consider one of the most talented artist around. Not only as a musician but as a writer, composer and actor as well.Once the music started you sat mesmerized and wish that the music would never...............stop.  I still play "all" of his music and I feel as though I have lost a family member and a personal friend. Issac, you will be greatly, greatly missed my friend.

While I'm sorry he's gone, he was a hypocrite. He was perfectly fine poking fun of every other religion on South Park for YEARS (and getting paid good money to do it!), but when they did a Scientology episode he was suddenly against it and quit.
SHENANIGANS!!
I stand accused will be a bigger hit for me than even Shaft.  R.I.P. Mr. Hayes, you will definitely be missed!!  One more addition to the Heavenly choir.  Condolences to his family.
when I was young Isaac was one song I would never forget, because my father was the biggest fan I have ever seen he would even try to be like Isaasc so it was like he was in my house.  those were the days.  We will always love you and will miss you.may GOD be with the family.
    Love The Walker Family
Isaac will always be a Memphis icon. I was raised in that wonderful city and I am so saddened by his passing. If my employer paid bereavement for such grieving, I would be in Memphis today. His voice will be missed on the WRBO radio station in Memphis.
I am in mourning for the talent of Bernie Mac, but (and forgive me please), my heart is really aching for the loss of Isaac Hayes!  I remember when he came out on stage with chains on.  What a spectacular presence he was.  I also have a fond memory of singing with him on "Singing On The Mike with Ike" on 98.7 KISS FM radio station.
All my friends heard me, and Isaac actually complemented me.  Two talents that will be greatly missed.
Rest in peace, both of you, and my your souls spring eternal in the hearts and minds of your loved ones.
Isaac is a giant loss in the music industry. He will be
truly missed. He made the right music that went along with the movies he played in.He is an icon of music!
I worked for a bank in Atlanta in the late 80's and I had the pleasure of calling Mr. Hayes one of my customers.  He would pull up in his black mercedes and come in to do his banking just like everyone else.  He was akways very gracious and friendly. He presented this larger than life persona but his personality downplayed that. I am proud to say I got to meet this wonderful human being, and he will be greatly missed.  Rest in peace, Mr. Hayes!
Its always surprises me to learn that I have connected with someone I have never met to the point that I personally feel the loss of their dying....
So it is for me with both Isaac Hayes and Bernie Mac...Ironically, an episode of "The Bernie Mac Show" was aired last week that featured Isiac Hayes as a guest where Bernie spoke to the audience (breaking the 4th wall of tv).  It was the one in which Bernie discovers that his niece is secretly playing a guitar and singing in the basement.  It was via that segment that I learned that Isaac Hayes and Bernie Mac were friends.  The shock of his friend's passing may have been a factor in Isaac's untimely dying.  New grief sometimes brings on the reoccurance of old grief... The combination can sometimes be too much to bear....For those of us who truly miss these two great talents and human beings, I say, "If you feel like you want cry - and crying is your thing ...CRY ON!"

I, as many memphians are alumni of Manassas High School.  I can recall being treated to his soulfully sounds way before his name went up in lights.  He would be the star of the shool's talent revue and the students would just go wild. It was from this first small step that he went on to put Memphis on the map. I can recall many a romantic evenings that my husband and I spent out in the park listening to his ballads.  He will truly be missed.  God bless his family and give them strength.
Issac Hayes has gone to glory but will forever be remembered for his work. I remember the first time I head Hot Buttered Soul on the radio, I was frankly overjoyed that someone in the recording medium could produce such a great hit.
I will never forget seeing Isaaic and Deion Walwick do a show at the Garden State Art Center in New Jersey.  Their them was "A Man and His Woman".
Heven seems to have all of our great ones.  So many of our great artis have past on in the last decade.
In addition to the cultural contributions Mr. Hayes made to America and the world, what I will take away from my one and only encounter with him is what a genuinely nice person he was.

I ran into him at a COSTCO in East Memphis one afternoon and he was as unpretentious a person as you could ever meet.  Too often, successful artists forget that it's the people who appreciate their music/movies/books etc that make it possible for those artists to live their dreams.  Mr. Hayes stated this fact to me and, while looking me in the eyes, said thank you to me for allowing him to live his dreams.  I will never forget that.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Hayes family.
I was just listening to my Issac Hayes CD in my car
the other day.  I was listening to his version of
they long to be close to you. I loved the way he did
his remakes.  Heaven is the place to be. Luther,
Gerald, Barry, JB, and now Issac.  May you rest
in Peace. You will be missed!!!
A medley for Black Moses
       Isaac Hayes

The color of sweet dark chocolate
You charmed us with your deep sultry voice
You gave us That loving feeling
Every time you took the stage
You’d Do your thing

You always wore The look of love
I cried and smiled every time you sang,
By the time I get to Phoenix
Ain’t that loving you?
You told us Don’t let go
Because when in love, you
Never can say goodbye

I just don’t know what to do with myself
I stand accused
Of loving you,
I love you that’s all
Because you bring me,
Joy

Your music will keep you alive…

Greta F Gardner
New York
My favority Issac Hayes tune is "A Few More Kisses"...which keeps playing in my head.

I loved his deep voice and the way he articulated the words in his song.

Rest in Peace Mr. Hayes!

Gonna miss you.
