'Dancing' stars I'm rooting for

"Dancing With the Stars" starts tonight, but really, haven't we all known who we're rooting for since the cast was announced?

If you've watched the show, you know that it helps to be a pro or Olympic athlete (Apolo Anton Ohno, Emmitt Smith, Helio Castroneves), a singer who's danced on stage (Drew Lachey), or, even better, an Olympian whose sport was closely tied to dancing (Kristi Yamaguchi).

If that's going to hold true again this year, the smart money is on Olympic volleyball gold medalist Misty May-Treanor, gold-medal sprinter Maurice Greene, or NFL vet Warren Sapp. But that doesn't mean they'll have the biggest fan base.

May-Treanor might do well -- her Olympic victory is still fresh in viewers' minds. And I admit I'll be rooting for her -- she has her late mom's initials tattooed on her shoulder, and she created one of the most excruciatingly embarrassing moments of the Beijing Games when she invited President George Bush to whack her backside (he smartly declined and patted her back instead).

But I admit it, I'm mostly cheering for the older folks. (I was a John O'Hurley fan, too.) Cloris Leachman is 82, and yet she's in there kicking on a show that has melted actors and athletes one-quarter of her age. You go, Clo!

ABC
Susan Lucci is one of the dancers I'm rooting for.

At 61, Susan Lucci is 21 years younger than Leachman, but I'm cheering her on, too. She's been Erica Kane on "All My Children" since before most of the pros on "Dancing" were born, and at least from what the public sees, she's always been a class act.

I confess, I have a secret crush on Ted McGinley. Yes, the 50-year-old actor is the unofficial mascot of JumpTheShark.com for a reason -- he wrecks every show he joins -- but I even forgive him for killing "The Love Boat." As long as he doesn't kill "Dancing," I'll be rooting him on.

You just know Lance Bass will be a great dancer -- those 'N Syncers were nothing if not choreography whizzes. He's also paired with Lacey Schwimmer from "So You Think You Can Dance," and yes, I think they can both dance.

I hate to admit it, but I can't root against Chef Rocco DiSpirito. His reality show, "The Restaurant," fascinated me (although I made Mama's famous meatballs out of his cookbook and they were disappointingly bland).

I'm reserving judgment on most of the rest of the cast. This season is taking the term "Stars" pretty loosely...Brooke Burke? Jeffrey Ross? Cody Linley?)

But I'll tell you who I'm rooting against, fairly or unfairly: Kim Kardashian. She's an egregious example of someone who's famous for being famous, and why she has a reality show, or why anyone would ever watch it, is one of the world's great mysteries to me.

Who are you rooting for -- or against -- on "Dancing With the Stars"? You can also vote here for your favorites, and here for your least faves.

After watching last night's show it's clear who the top performers were:  Toni Braxton, Brooke Burke, Misty May Treanor & Warren Sap.  What a great start with great talent!  It's ironic to read all of the comments re: Susan Lucci's 'class & grace' after she exclaimed dramatically after her dance that she could be a slut!  I was embarrassed that my daughter was watching the show.  Let's keep it family-friendly, please!
THey should really rename this show to Dancing with Almost Sorta stars. Kim Kardashian???? Who the hell is she? And I love Edyta, she's my FAVORITE professional but she's teamed with who???? I don't live in a cave but I've never heard of Jeffrey Ross. Unfortunately he won't be around for too long. I like Ted McGinley and Lance Bass.

As for Kim K; hope she goes soon. I find her extremely annoying. And she can take the Miley Cyrus kid with her.
Susan Lucci is a over acheiver and my favorite to win.
She maintains her beauty, grace and physical appearance the way all woman should.  She has always been a winner.
susan is great but she would look better with some weight on her.
I like Susan Lucci.  I think she was just a bit nervous in her first dance, but has what it takes to overcome that. I'd like to she her have a fare chance.
I Love Warren Sapp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Warren Sapp is going to show them all!!  Susan Lucchi looks like a stick mannequin with a big head!  The flabby flesh on her legs quivers when she moves, the boob job, the long hair on a 62 yr. old -- give us a break!  Warren Sapp is going to do it!  Class, style, movement, he's got it all.
Misty and Maks all the way.
I was not overjoyed by anyone the first night.  I think the professionals "dummied down" some of the routines because the stars had to learn two of them for the first week.  Does anyone else think this is unfair since the premise of the show is to make ballroom dancers out of non-dancers?  I think learning two dances the first week is unfair to the stars and the professionals.
okay I know I watched last night and have to say, although Lance Bass annoys me (always has) he was very good last night, and so was Warren Sapp... that one surprised me but that man looked like he was having and fun and he can move...
Kim is gorgeous from the neck up everything else has been surgically enhanced (her nose too) and if she was truthful about then maybe I would like her more. I've known her family for a long time - but this is a DANCE competition and she was mediocre. Toni, Brooke and Lance were the best but Misty and Warren were surprisingly good considering they both obviously haven't had any dance training before this.
Oh come on. Being "Completely Hot" is the only that could possibly keep Kardashian on the show. She had zero connection with her partner and with her audience. Ya'll better enjoy her behind while you can cause it's going bye bye!
I'll be voting for the best DANCER each week...not who's the most famous or the least annoying!
I love Susan Lucci, and I really hope she and Cloris goes all the way.  Classy and entertaining... that's what we need.  If it was a real contest for who is the best dancer then they would not put an 82 year old and 61 year old up against 20 year olds... it's about entertainment.
Misty May and Maks were absolutely wonderful.  I missed him last year.  I thought that Brooke Burke was really good, I wasn't sure how she was going to do, but she is really good.  I think that she and Derek Hough make a good pair dancing.
I'm relatively new to watching DWTS but really wanted to see Cloris Leachman -- I was so impressed that she'd attempt this at her age. Now I only hope she is voted off quickly before she makes a total fool of herself. She's got incredible spirit but, frankly, can't compete in the dancing area -- and the rolling eyes and faces her partner makes behind her back are embarrassing.
WARREN SAPP, WARREN SAPP, WARREN SAPP.  You can see that he's enjoying this and he is doing very well. All the way Mr. Sapp!!!!
I wish some of you oh so negative people would leave Kim Kardashian alone! What has she done to cause such a bitter response to her? Because her family has money? Because her attention-grabbing, disgusting ex published would should have been a private sex tape? She isn't trampsing around every minute, she owns a business and has for years and works for a living, and many of us have done private things that we would be ashamed of if made public. I don't think people should automatically root for her, but being so nasty about someone you don't know seems so immature to me. If she can dance, she has my vote, just to counter all the haters with nothing better to do but diss this young girl who is just living the life she's been given!!
