Dude, these male celebs are OK by me

Last week, msnbc.com's Anna Chan wrote in Test Pattern about female celebrities who she thinks have got it all going on. She only named two women before asking readers to name more. I would have written that post, but the Internet couldn't hold my list and our servers couldn't handle your responses.

So instead this week I get to respond with male celebrities who I think have it "all." By "all" we'll stick to Anna's definition of looks and talent and apparent smarts. I watch enough movies and television and read enough magazines and Web sites that I think I can cobble something together. And my wife and I have always had a fun back-and-forth regarding celebrities and who each of us would be allowed to hook up with if we were alone in New York or Paris and the stars just happened to align. Perhaps you're in a relationship that can handle such make-believe.

Clive Owen: Playing the hand he's been dealt.

So let's start with Clive Owen. You'll find that I'm going to reference mostly men who leave little doubt that they are in fact men. Meaning, they probably look great in a tux, they might have an accent and they can likely beat up your boyfriend if provoked. Owen fits all of these criteria. Rent "Croupier" or "Children of Men" or watch one of these extended BMW ads because a hot male film star should know how to drive, too (Steve McQueen! Paul Newman!).

It's not difficult to transition from Clive Owen to James Bond and these days 007 means Daniel Craig ... again, the accent and the tux. When Craig walked out of the water in "Casino Royale" wearing those little swim trunks all he needed to do was kick sand in Matthew McConaughey's face to seal his status as king of the beach. Watch him here on Charlie Rose because, well, you should watch a little less of "The View."

How about another tough guy to complete the trifecta? "300" star Gerard Butler brings the accent and the abs necessary to make the list. And if I had a dollar for every time I've heard a guy in my office say, "This is Sparta!" I wouldn't be sweating the economic crisis. Not to mention that my boss is practically stalking Butler online and not putting him on the list wasn't an option for me.

I could go on and on with the hunky action stars who don't speak "American," but that wouldn't leave me time to name Robert Downey Jr. (beyond talented), Dominic West (best cop on TV -- ever), that model guy Gabriel Aubry (I have no idea if he's talented or smart, but when's the last time you got the sexiest woman alive pregnant?), and, oh yeah, what's his face ... George Clooney (when I grow up, I want to be him).

Alright, ladies (and gentlemen), let 'er rip. Which male celebrities are worth the price of a ticket, worth setting the DVR for, worth thumbing through a magazine in the checkout line or worth that one night in Paris for you?

Clive for sure, and Dominic West too (How I loved The Wire - shout out also for Idris Elba) -- also Philip Glenister (Life on Mars, Ashes to Ashes) Kevin Bacon -- and Bill Nighy.

My main man -- Russell Crowe, thin or heavy!!!
It's Patrick Wilson for me.  No accent, but he scores in all your other categories plus he can sing and dance.  Love, love, love him and my lovely husband knows it!
What about Kevin McKidd?  Again, the accent!  Something about that Scottish burr...

David Tennant on the BBC "Doctor Who" is a cutie, too!
Oh, Gosh, Gerry Butler of course is at the top of the list, definitely.
David Boreanaz is the only reason to watch Bones.
Dane Cook, yea, I love him, that's all.
George Eads, He's just beautiful
and Christian Bale is nearly flawless.
and James McAvoy, God, He's a young Gerry. He's perfect =)
Italian Actor- Raoul Bova. No man is more beautiful or more perfect them him.... **sigh***....
Gael Garcia Bernal! He is a Mexican actor....so talented... so beautiful!
Sean Connery, please! The man is IMMORTAL and the only James Bond I'd ever happily fall for!
Okay, I agree with most of these, and will add my addition.. does anyone else melt when Colin Farrel talks? I also watch the Holiday just to see Jude Law.. and my all time favorite man with an accent is Sean Bean...now there is a man who has it all.. then we have our home grown hotties, George Clooney, Richard Gere, John Cusack, Mark Harmon (has the greatest freaking eyes in the world and if you ever saw the juvenile Summer School, and watch him on NCIS, you know he can do it all...
Gerard Butler...I've been in lust OOPS! in love with him since Attila and then Phantom of the Opera sealed the deal! Plus he's the sexiest man alive... No other can compare!
How could you leave off Johnny Depp??? He oozes sexy!!
Johnny Depp, George Clooney, Orlando Bloom, Christian Bale, and Sean Connery are my all time favorites. You can't forget the newcomers to the movie scene though. I think that Zac Efron, Dan Radcliffe, and Tom Felton and a few cuties coming up as well. I can't say they are hot necessarily, I am old enough to be their mom but they are definitely cuties.
I agree with those before who said Christian Bale and Ralph Fiennes, but for me, for always and forever, I'd have to go with Paul Rudd.

*swoon!*
DANIEL RADCLIFFE,absolutely, although I am way too old to even say that. He is just too hot/smart/cute/funny regardless of age. Jude Law, Clive Owen, Gerard Butler, David Duchovny, George Clooney, Hugh Jackman, Elijah Wood, the usual suspects. None of them would be kicked out of bed for eating crackers. They can have all the crackers they want.
Gerard Butler should be at the top of this list! He has the looks, talent and the smarts!  Gorgeous green eyes, tall and handsome Scot. He sang in Phantom of the Opera, and P.S. I Love You and has shown his acting talents in a range of movie roles from hero Beowulf to RocknRolla gangster. And was a lawyer in his early career. That fills the bill of having it "all".
Gerard Butler is the PERFECT PACKAGE.  He has it all,
talent, intelligence, perfect body, best looking, and he can sing.  What more could any woman want?
For me, Gerard Butler is the only one.  He's "pairfect" as far as I can see and I all I see is him!  He's just like I love my coffee, strong but very sweet!
George Clooney, Vince Vaughn (love a man with a sense of humor), John Cusack, Adrien Brody, and yes I too melt whenever Colin Farrell opens his mouth and the Irish accent comes out :)
Hello?  Jude Law, how gorgeous is he in Cold Mountain and of course, Leo and my personal fav, Mark Ruffalo!!
I love Rufus Sewell, he is in the new series, Eleventh Hour.  Ladies you will know him if you see his picture, he was gorgeous in the movie Dangerous Beauty.  He is beautiful, sexy and English!
Oops sorry, I forgot - Hugh Laurie! House. He rocks.
Dude, Trent Reznor! Not only is he a musical genius, he's hot. Also Gale Harold, John Corbett and Edward Norton. Yum!
All of these men are quite nice but sorry I have to say that Johnny Depp surpasses them all!
GERARD BUTLER! Holy moly--he's the epitome of the perfect male. Thoses eyes and accent, whew!
Also, I have to include Clive Owen, Nathan Fillion, Lee Pace, Eric Bana (sexiest Henry VIII ever), Henry Cavill (On The Tudors--much sexier than Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and of course, Johnny Depp (as Captain Jack Sparrow--sigh)
I love hearing that others have a "list" - a la "Friends"!  Mine is full of accents!  Of course, Ewan McGregor could stand on the list all by himself.  He's SOOO sexy with those eyes, that smile, that voice.  And he's such a caring, considerate husband and father, and those things just bring him to the top for me. But since I'm given the option of 5 to a list, here are the rest:  Clive Owen (that accent), Eric Bana (those eyes), Christian Bale (mmm, just about everything there!) and Gavin Rossdale (a little odd on my list, but he's easy on the eyes!)
Gerard Butler you can't get any better than him!!
Paul Newman, may be rest in peace, was and will always be "IT" in my book - ridiculously beautiful, cool, witty and a man of true character. I can't think of another actor who even comes close!
I need to agree with David Tennant! Yay! And also Louis Garrel, anyone? I mean, he speaks french AND Italian and is not afraid to go...umm...all the way for a role.
WOW I couldn't disagree more with all the names thrown here. I like exotic looks so no white men for me.

I like Benicio del Toro, Denzel Washington, Djimon Hounsou, Taye Diggs, Adam Rodriguez (Delko from CSI Miami) he is hot!!!!, Benjamin Bratt, Andy Garcia, Will Smith.

The only one I kind of agree with is Christian Bale... and the rest zzzzzzzzzz
as I have no way of knowing exactly how "smart" any actor or actress may be, I'm going with looks and acting ability alone - with that in mind -

Keifer Sutherland
Josh Dumal
the guy on Fringe - don't know his name
George Clooney - only for his looks
Brad Pitt - only for his looks
Hugh Jackman
Hugh Laurie
Sean Connery
Mark Wahlberg
Matt Damon
Johnny Depp
many more, but these are who my mind sees first when answering this question!!

George Clooney and Daniel Craig...yes...they make my heart a flutter....but two men that I know are not going to appear on any other list is William Fitchner (who played Sully in the Perfect Storm and is the blonde on Prison Break now) and Vincent D'Onofrio from Law and Order CI....they are not traditional...but they are HOT!!!!!!!
Barack Obama!
Not a bad list, I definately laud you for includng Gerry Butler (as would any red blooded female at this point and time, I'm sure!).  I would beg to include Ralph Fiennes, Gary Oldman, and Liam Neeson, though.  Three of the best actors of our generation, and very good looking, too.  Any movie with any of the above mentioned four is one I would pay to see (and probably more than once!).
Yes...I forgot Hugh Laurie of House fame....what blue eyes!!!!!  And then there is Mike Rowe from Dirty Jobs on Discovery....what a voice!
Sadly, Heath Ledger and River Phoenix ranked at the top for me.  Of course I never mind seeing Hugh Jackman, Jude Law, Clive Owen, and Johnny Depp on the silver screen!
ummmm Gerard Butler tops my list for sure. That Scottish brouge, all of them muscles, and that killer smile and what mirrors in his eyes. What that man can claim in the name of sparta;) Jason Statham, Clive Owen, Sean Connery, Daniel Craig, William Peterson, and the late Brandon Lee. Most of us women love a strong man, with a basket full of brains who can also make us laugh, while sounding sexy doing it all ahhhhhhhhhh........
I can't believe no one mentioned Russell Crowe - he can beat up all these guys and make most ladies swoon.  I've been looking for all of his movies since The Quick and the Dead
Jason Statham, Johnny Depp, Ryan Reynolds, Christian Bale, boy this one's hard to pick just a few...
This is just the topic for me :-)
Can I break it up into two categories -- Television and Movies?

Television:  HUGH LAURIE!  The man just melts me.  After that, I choose Mark Harmon, William Petersen, and Christopher Meloni.

Movies:  The entire "Oceans" movie cast.  Ok, maybe not the ENTIRE cast, but certainly, Brad Pitt, George Clooney, and Matt Damon.

There are other guys out there who are handsome, but for me, these six...they have it ALL!
Johnny Depp & Hugh Jackman!!!!!
John Corbett for me, all the way!!!!   And Russell Crowe, too.
Anna, I'm with you on Gale Harold. Did you see him in "Rhinoceros Eyes"? And I thought I couldn't love him more than I did when he was the gorgeous Brian Kinney!
Laugh if you must...but my answer is firm.  PRINCE!!!
Handsome: Pierce Brosnan, Jon Hamm, Orlando Bloom, Keith Olbermann (love those glasses!)
Puppy dog cute: Zach Levi ("Chuck"), John Krasinski
It's not the looks that are so important, give us a man who knows who he really is, not just the HOLLYWOOD FACE. Any man who can be a faithful husband and loving father, not just an act for the cameras, now that is a man who is SEXY!!!!
Clive Owen at the top , no doubt. Gerard Butler, James McAvoy , Jason Stathom , Javier Bardem , Edgar Ramirez, Shemar Moore...............
I do agree with the inclusion of Clive Owen and Gerard Butler (major hotties!), but I do have to add for the accents Hugh Jackman and Jack Davenport.  Other guys on my list are Matthew McConaughey, Patrick Dempsey, Johnny Depp, and Jeffery Dean Morgan.

Oh, and I have begun to like James Marsden...
Oops!  Did I mention that, when I start thinking about my guys, I forget how to count?  I meant, "These SEVEN...they have it all!"
Oh, how about Viggo Mortensen? A guy who only acts because he wants to and brains to go with it!  Speaks 7 languages, sings, author/photographer/artists, started a publishing company...quite a Renaissance man.
Craig Ferguson does it for me.  He's intelligent,self-depricating, great Scottish accent, funny, and I love the way he teases about his possibly flexible sexual orientation.
Big difference between "really hot" vs. "has it
ALL". For me having it all is more...Clooney, Cusack, Newman and for just really hot, there are dozen's more..Wahlberg, Reeves, McConoghey, Gere, Damon and for my daughter, Johnny Depp, ok.
