Why can't Mark Wahlberg take a joke?

"Saturday Night Live" has been making plenty of news in recent weeks, thanks mainly to the high interest in the show's political sketches -- namely Tina Fey's spot-on impersonation of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

But a seemingly random sketch ("Barky Bark and the Donkey Bunch" -- ha!) by cast member Andy Samberg that consisted of the comic impersonating actor Mark Wahlberg talking to an assortment of real animals is generating some buzz of its own. This isn't because the Oct. 4 sketch is particularly relevant or comically brilliant. The buzz is coming from Wahlberg's apparent inability to accept being the butt of a joke.

Mark Wahlberg: No joy in Max Payne.

In a recent interview with the New York Post, the "Max Payne" star says he wasn't amused by Samberg's skit.

"'Saturday Night Live' hasn't been funny for a long time," Wahlberg said. "They've asked me to do the show a ton of times. I used to watch it when Eddie Murphy was there and Joe Piscopo and Bill Murray. I don't even know who's on the show now."

Fair enough. He's got a new movie coming out and he's a little tweaked at being mocked on a national TV show that has recently seen a huge uptick in viewers. But Thursday night Wahlberg was on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" and the host brought up the animal sketch again. The two watched a clip, the audience laughed and then Wahlberg launched into a expletive-filled rant about how he was seriously going to fly to New York and punch Samberg in the face.

How many years has "Saturday Night Live" been making fun of ... everyone? It would seem to me that at this point if you're a public figure and haven't been the subject of a sketch on "SNL," that should be your concern. Wahlberg acts like he's playing a character in one of his action movies and he takes the lamest possible approach to dealing with the diss -- he doesn't laugh it off. Now he's undoubtedly drawing more attention to Internet clips of the sketch itself and to his own silly reaction on talk shows.

So what do you think? Was the original "Mark Wahlberg Talks to Animals" sketch even funny? Have you lost a little respect for Mark Wahlberg -- or did you ever have any anyway? How should celebs deal with being parodied -- is there any choice but to laugh it off?

Oh, and by the way, if Wahlberg's entire reaction turns out to be a farce and is his way of generating his own buzz for his new movie, it'll have been his best work in years.

UPDATE: Hey, maybe Wahlberg does indeed have a sense of humor! Access Hollywood is reporting that he'll make an appearnace on "SNL" this weekend.

thats hilarious. say hi to your mom for me...
I watched Walberg's appearance on Jimmy Kimmel and, expletives aside, it was clear to me that he was joking about "punching Samberg in the nose". I'm surprised anyone thinks he is taking this so seriously.
I watched the skit when it first ran and it wasn't funny.  Mark Whalberg is obviously taking himself too seriously and by doing what he's doing is actually making the skit funny now.
Not many people seem to understand that MARK WAHLBERG has been trying for a long time now to get away from his Marky Mark persona.  I think he is angry because during a time when he should be known for being MAX PAYNE people still see him as Marky Mark.
It's too bad because he has a lot of talent and should be utilized more in the industry.
Hey Walberg...shut up.  It's an honor to be mocked on SNL.  Your a big strong boy, so man up and have a laugh at yourself.  Are you really that angry at Samberg or are you compensating for something else?  Hmm....
I think Mark needs a stool softner !!! Relax dude !!
I saw the sketch, and it was funny in its randomness. Andy Samberg has a way of making people laugh over the dumbest things. I think Mark Wahlberg needs to lighten up and get over it.
Mark Walberg might not like talking to animals but he sure loves acting like a jacka**.
Watch the clip, people!  Mark was half-smiling the entire time he was speaking.  It in no way could be considered a "rant".  I smell "publicity stunt"
oh, how the beautiful, wealthy & famous suffer...
marky mark is just pissed that he made a fool of himself when he was younger and now wants to be all serious actor guy. So he wants no one to bring it up ever again.  Dream on Marky.  I personally think all his movies are the same.  Its the same character in every flick. What a douche. oh no! should i be expecting a knock on my door next.
I was so high and thought it was great on the show. He does a great impression dog.
I agree that SNL hasn't been funny in a long time as well, and that the sketch in question didn't even get a smile from me or my co-workers. Honestly, if I was being parodied in that sketch I would be insulted by how stupid the parody was.
personally i think mark walberg is a joke anyways.... so go SNL!  lol
It was a good impersonation... If Wahlberg does not like it then..

a) He cannot take a joke
b) Look in the mirror.  That's how you talk and act, you doofus.

I have really enjoyed watching him as an actor--he was so great in The Departed, and I'm sure will continue to do more great work. I do think he was joking on Jimmy's show, but he does seem to take himself a bit too seriously. Being able to really laugh at yourself is one of life's great pleasures.
Hey, you don't want to be parodied, go crawl into a cave like Bin Laden. I'm not an actor OR famous, but my co-workers, friends, relatives, the mailman all parody me---why?---'cuz I'm so unique. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, so get over it, Barky Bark! Learn to laugh at life!
This is a publicity stunt.  Mark was not angry you can clearly see that he said it in a joking manner.  I don't see him as Marky Mark anymore he truly is talented his movies speak for themselves.  Does anyone ever watch SNL anymore?  I have to agree with Mark in saying that SNL was at it's best when Eddie Murphy, Bill Murray, Rosanna Danna, Gene Wilder, Jim Belushi etc... Those were the days to watch SNL!!!
I loved the sketch, and I like Mark Wahlberg. I thought it was great I think he's taking it to hard.
Ok-he really needs to give this a break.  Andy Samberg is a really funny guy, and any laughs we can get right now will help us all.  It will be intersting to see if this weeks SNL will take it further because of his reaction to it.
I haven't seen the sketch, or Wahlberg's interview - nor have I seen SNL since 1980.  I've seen bits and pieces of the over the years, but I stopped watching it long ago.  To that point, I do agree with Wahlberg, in that the show stopped being funny decades ago.
oh please. grow some thick skin if you expect to have a career in entertainment. if you regret your 'funky bunch' days, FINE. but people don't forget - especially when that was your START!
Much ado about nothing!  On both your part and Wahlberg's.  SNL isn't that funny anymore and although the TF skits have kicked it up a notch, it can't compare to 1975 and the Prime Time Players at all.  The macho idiocy MW is prtraying comes from his success at the Box Office playing roles that America, by its attendance at these films, says it wants.  BTW, did anyone see worry cross anyone else's face after MW's remarks?  I think not.  I mean Florida Tire Tool across the bridge of his nose would shut him up in a hurry.
As goofy as it was, the sketch was a brilliant impersonation.  If you close you eyes, it is pretty darn close.  They were not making fun of his "Marky Mark" persona.  But even if they were, embrace it.  More than likely, he would not be where he is today without that start.  As for the threats and expletives on JK, I am pretty sure he was joking.  But it is so hard to tell.  He always has such an intense look on his face.  All in all, I think it is great publicity for him right now.  "Max Payne" is not getting the best reviews and "Entourage" is hurting.  However, he is still hot and I still love him, even though he is being somewhat of a baby about it. :)
Give me a break!

Clearly Mark was joking when he made those comments. Go watch it again, he's grinning half the time as he says them.

Why is it whenever SNL parodies someone, it's (supposedly) funny, but when the subject of the joke starts goofing on SNL, everyone gets whiny?
Mark Wahlberg is a fine actor and I consider his anger to be misdirected into something else.  Once he relaxes and doesn't take things too seriously, he will see that life is all about unfair.  All seriously aside, I enjoyed his Calvin Klein commercials -- he has a body and should have thought twice about bare all of that if he wanted to have himself considered seriously.  Time will tell....
Wahlburg SUCKED in The Departed, he seems incapable of any subtleness in his acting.  I liked him best in his earlier roles, such as The Basketball Diaries and Boogie Nights, but since he became a "star" he seems more wooden and lame than ever.  I don't expect I will have any desire to see "Max Payne", I just don't think Wahlberg is a person who can carry a movie, he's better suited as a role player like he was in The Perfect Storm.

That all being said, the SNL skit was a typical one-joke pony, Samberg's impression was pretty funny, and only Wahlberg's seeming petulance is making that skit live beyond the short shelf life it would have had.
LOVE me some Mark Wahlberg.  Yum!  =)
He was definitely joking on Kimmel -- people who haven't seen the skit or Kimmel should refrain from commenting...
seeing as how entourage is loosely based on his life I'm positive he was joking in this interview otherwise Kimmel would NEVER of shown the clip.  Use you're heads on reporter had a slow day and came up w/ this crap.
HAHA! Donny Wahlberg's little brother.
NICE INFLATED EGO

you suck at life, face it
I think Mark is doing this all for the laugh. I think he does get it, and he thinks it's funnier if he acts like an ass. I bet he'll show up on SNL at some point for the beat down.
The SNL skit wasn't funny itself...(talking to animals?)  But the impression was hilarious!  I don't think of him as Marky Mark anymore, but if I were him, I'd be thanking God for his start out in the biz...and I'm sure he's still getting pretty pennies for his song STILL being played!
I was rolling on the floor during the skit when I saw it live, so if he really in fact hated it, then that's a big problem of his. It's too bad. I thought it was funny.
3 words: Short Man's Disease
My wife and I saw the sketch and figured it had to be some kind of inside joke because it really wasn't funny, and was kind of pointless.
I'm especially curious about what the "Funky Bunch" thought of the sketch, though.
I don't think Wahberg is upset and he was just being funny as well.  I thought the skit was great and it was a fantastic impersonation of Wahberg.  I would not be surprised to see Wahberg on the next SNL confronting Samberg in another skit.
Marky Mark says the show hasn't been funny in a long time, but can't tell you who's on it.  What a moron!
Say hello to ya' mutha fa' me!  It was funny, take a joke MW.
I just now watched the sketch and didn't see the interview. I agree with several of the comments.  SNL hasn't been funny in years.  Oh wait, it's now more like decades.
I am so tired of people saying SNL hasn't been funny since the original cast.  Are you brain dead?  Just because they were the original doesn't mean they were the best at it.  SNL has had it's ups and downs - it's been on the air over 30 years so it's bound to.  But it's ridiculous to say that only one cast was good.  That's just ignorant or you only find yourself amusing.
Firstly the skit wasn't funny in the least.

Secondly, Wahlberg didn't seem too upset on Jimmy Kimmel.  His response was funnier than the "offending" skit.  All this is much ado about nothing.
J Miles - I'm with you.  This is going to culminate in something on SNL.  There's no way Mark is really pissed off - he doesn't have such a good poker face.
I agree; if you haven't seen the skit and Kimmel then you just don't get it.  Wahlberg was just being funny in his own way.
Holy cow, he was so obviously kidding on Jimmy Kimmel.  How could you even suggest he was serious?!?  Also, he is right in his assessment of SNL. It hasn't been funny since Will Ferrel left.
Hilarious.  Had he kept his mouth in check this would have not even got a second look.  Unfortunatly he is not quite smart enough to do something like that...  Do you think he will bring the Funky Bunch and the New Kids to New York with him on Saturday?  Maybe his pal Vanilla Ice can also help him mop the SNL Posse.
Marky Mark? Marky Mark? This has nothing to do with Marky Mark? Have you not viewed his movies. Whether he was a bartender playing football or seeking revenge of a dead mother in Four Brothers his characters always seemed to be able to instantly switch gears and give a "Hi how ya doin? Tell your mother I said Hi" to some innocent bystander he happened to run into. Andy Samberg nailed it. Star on the Walk of Fame? No thanks, I'll take being made fun of by Andy Samberg any day.
I wouldn't have even known about the sketch had Mark not thrown such a fit. Now, it's hilarious. Ease up big guy, no one takes your acting all that seriously so give the kid a break.
I was right.  Access Hollywood just reported that Wahlberg will be on the show tomorrow night.
