Give "Life on Mars" a whirl

Last week, Gael Cooper wrote about TV shows that belong in the TV dead pool. This week, I want to focus on three that have pleasantly surprised me and become part of my TV watching ritual:  ABC’s “Life on Mars,” HBO’s “True Blood” and the CW’s “Privileged.”

ABC
Jason O'Mara in "Life on Mars."

“Life on Mars”
I came into this show a skeptic. I had thoroughly enjoyed the BBC version and was positive that ABC’s spin would be more “Coupling” than “The Office.” But I’ve been happily surprised. As someone who loves crime procedurals, it’s incredibly fun to see how cops solve crimes without the help of modern technology (crime scenes are contaminated, fibers aren’t analyzed, blood splatter isn’t measured).  Add to that solid work from Jason O’Mara (last seen on “Men in Trees”) as Sam Tyler and a completely over-the-top (in the best way) performance from Harvey Keitel as Lieutenant Gene Hunt and you have a fun night of TV. I also like that ABC has added hippy neighbor Windy, who believes a meal isn’t complete without a little marijuana.  And in a time when every TV show seems to share the same indie rock soundtrack, “Life on Mars’” ‘70s tunes, such as Mott the Hoople’s “All the Way to Memphis” and Sweet’s “Little Willie” are pretty refreshing.

HBO
Stephen Moyer in "True Blood."

“True Blood”
OK, now this one is tawdry. And that’s what’s so great about it. This story about vampires as the minority in a small Louisiana town has sex, drugs (in the form of vampire blood) and more sex. Anna Paquin combines savviness and innocence in her portrayal of Sookie Stackhouse, the virginal (depending on how many episodes you’ve watched) waitress who can hear what everyone is thinking. This show was criticized early on because creator Alan Ball leaned too hard on the vampires-equal-homosexuals metaphor, but frankly, this show is more about fun than preaching. You find yourself rooting for Sookie’s romance with vampire Bill Compton (the easy-on-the-eyes Stephen Moyer). But you get just as easily drawn into the other characters' storylines, whether it be Jason Stackhouse’s (Ryan “check out those abs” Kwanten) addiction to easy sex and vampire blood or Sookie’s best friend Tara Thorton’s (Rutina Wesley) on-and-off romance with Sam Merlotte (and what’s going on with him, anyway?). Yes, basically this is a soap opera with vampires, but it’s much naughtier than anything you’ll find on regular TV.

“Privileged”
I have an admitted yen for shows about teenagers, but I really thought this one was going to be on the must-skip, too-good-to-be-true “7th Heaven” side of the equation. Instead with the charming Joana Garcia (who’s a dead ringer for Amy Adams in looks and manner) as Megan Smith, the aspiring journalist-turned-tutor of two spoiled girls, the show is actually a “Gilmore Girls”-esque charmer. And, yes, it’s a bit humorous that the nastier of the twins Sage (Ashley Newbrough) looks like Rumor Willis. Hey, it gives a bit of authenticity to the show. And, OK, it does seem odd that not one but three handsome men are after Megan, but this show takes place in fantasy land, where a job as a tutor includes a convertible, a bedroom the size of a hotel suite and a lot of time to yourself. Yes, this one is definitely a guilty pleasure, but, hey, at least it’s a pleasure.

Are there new shows that have you hooked? Which ones are they and why?

I love Priviledged as well. It's a smart, fun show, and I'm glad I decided to take a chance on it when it premiered.
Of the three, the only one I watch is True Blood - it is pretty good - a little campy - but the theme song ("I wanna do bad things with you") and opening title sequence is very cool... but don't forget about returning shows like Life and Dexter that deserve to be watched...
One word -- "Fringe".
Sons of Anarchy has me hooked.  Katie Segal is beyond great as the head old lady. She rocks drama as well as she does comedy.
I LOVE True Blood.  My theory of what's going on with Sam Merlotte is that he is a werewolf.  I've suspected it since I heard him barking in his sleep and then saw him writhing around in Dawn's bed after her death.  Then this week when he was seen running through the woods naked has solidified my suspicions.  I could be wrong, but that's my theory.
I loved the first season of the original BBC version of Life on Mars, but by the end, the series was so dissapointing I wanted to know how I could get those hours of my life back. Sorry, but that soured me completely. It was the one new series I knew I wouldn't even give a shot. Whenever I comment on a new show that seems intriguing, my husband jokes, "Yeah, that's what you said about Life on Mars."
I set my DVR to record season openings of True Blood and Life on Mars. Watched both and thought they were equally good. Started watching the second show of Life on Mars but stopped after 10 minutes - just didn't hold up for me. Deleted the show on my DVR and went on to True Blood. All I can say is "wow!" It's a fantastic ride and I've become a loyal fan - can't wait for next week,
True Blood is my guilty pleasure. The pilot episode was campy but now it's so much better. I know *STUFF* so I won't drop any spoilers. Bill is quite the bomb!
I'm already hooked on "My Own Worst Enemy" with Christian Slater.
It's a shame that they have moved "Life" to Friday nights because its so easy to get hooked into - Damian Lewis is really fabulous!
I think that the best new show this season is Raising the Bar. Life on Mars is good, so far, but I did watch the BBC version first.
I love True Blood!  My hubby and I are totally hooked! I hope it doesn't get cancelled anythime soon!
Nope, Sam's not a werewolf. He's a werecollie. Remember the dog that is constantly hanging around Sookie.
The best, but most under-rated show on tv is Pushing Daisies.  It is clever and unique and the actors are all amazingly well cast.  This is such a fun and original show. It has such a great heart and leaves you feeling wonderful after watching it.  (And yes, I am also addicted to True Blood.)
I love True Blood. Great acting, and sets. Stephen Moyer is perfect as Bill. Sexiest man on tv.
My Own Worst Enemy already has me hooked as well!  I love watching him play 2 completely different personalities.
"Fringe!" It's the best show I've seen on TV in years.
What about "Sons of Anarchy"??? That has to be the best show on tv now!
Fringe - love it!!
Too funny!  I can't STAND Raising the Bar - gave it two episodes and all I kept thinking was, "shampoo and cut that stringy hair!" :-)  I love Life On Mars, My Own Worst Enemy and Fringe, though...  :-)
True Blood - Sam is a werewolf... or I think so anyway, just based on a few clues from the most recent episode. I love this show.
Life on Mars is fantastic. Really enjoying it. A great big sci-fi, police, comedy blender of goodness with writing that makes you think Tarantino is somehow involved.
My husband and I are completely hooked on True Blood and Sons of Anarchy!  This is one of the best new TV seasons in quite a while!!!!  Don't care if Sam is a werewolf, just along for the ride!  Bill is very handsome!  And Jax from SAMCRO, all I can say is WOW!
Being a huge fan of Charlaine Harris (she wrote the Sookie Stackhouse/southern vampires series "True Blood" is based on), I am really pleased and have loved watching "True Blood!"  The writers are staying almost true to the book (the first in the series) and while I won't give away Sam, all I can say is WATCH and READ the series!!!  Can't wait to see what they do with Eric and Pam....
My favorite new show is True Blood.   I like Kathleen's theory about Sam being a werewolf and even if he is not I had a feeling that a werewolf would be involved after the death of one of the characters.   I love a good vampire/human love story.  That is why I am also addicted to Twilight too.
Right now is the best time to have movie channels because True Blood, Entourage, Dexter and Californication are all great shows!
True Blood is an absolute thrill ride! It offers drama, humor, various guilty pleasures and for fans of the Charlaine Harris Southern Vampire series of books, it offers a new twist with the side stories of the other characters. Alan Ball has done a terrific job providing a visual world for Harris' characters which is rich and multi-layered.  Being from the south, I can tell you this is spot on! The actors/actresses in the show should be commended for their portrayals. Stephen Moyer and Anna Pauquin (and all the others, are awesome.  True Blood has been signed for a second season - woohoo!  I'll be there every step of the way!
True Blood...by far...hands down...the best new show I've seen in a long while! I know HBO has signed on for another season, but hope that it will have as long of a run as some of the "greats".
Privileged is the best new show this season.  All the others are pretty blah.  Instead, focus on the several great shows that debuted last season but were shortchanged due to the writers strike--Pushing Daisies, Private Practice and Dirty Sexy Money.
Sons of Anarchy is where its at this fall.  That show is intense from start to finish.
Why doesn't anyone talk about Sons of Anarchy on FX? It's a great show that doesn't get the attention it deserves. Well written and sometimes really funny, it's a great look inside the life of an actual biker club.  I'll admit I've not watched any of these because they couldn't hold my attention.
The Big Bang on CBS is the funniest show on T.V. I laugh from beginning to end and have yet to get bored with it. It's not often that a true comedy comes around and this one is at the top of my list. Take the time and watch it....you'll be as hooked as I am!
Sons of Anarchy! That has to be the best show on tv now!
True Blood is the ONLY show that I watch faithfully. I LOVE IT!  ps. I'm thinkin Sam is a werewolf too. He can walk in day, so he's not a vamp. He's too weird to be human and what's with the dog that's always following Sookie?
Well, I grew up on Hammer Films movies with Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. Really loved Buffy and Angel.

For me, True Blood is utter trash. None of the characters are worth investing in. And while I'm an Alan Ball fan, he doesn't have a clue about vampires, horror, or how to work them into a weekly series. I killed it from the DVR schedule, along with Heroes, last week. Pointless trash, written by morons with substance abuse issues, apparently.

I do like Fringe and I love Pushing Daisies. Life and Life On Mars are hanging in there. Other than those, Dancing With The Stars, and Survivor, I'm passing on everything else this season.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE TRUEBLOOD,  cant wait for the next episode.  I am soooooo hooked
Kathleen, I agree with you on the werewolf theory except for it was Sookie's brother who was running through the woods naked after snorting some drug laced with V-juice
If you like True Blood (or would like to watch it, but don't have cable), try "Supernatural" on CW (9pm, Thursdays). IMO, one of the best network shows, and one that shows its horror roots on a regular basis.
Jerseygirl,
Hate to tell you, that was Sam in the woods. I'm not going to provide a spoiler here, but Alan Ball has assured the fans of the books that he would be relatively faithful through the first 11 or 12 episodes and so he has been.  It wasn't Jason... promise.
My age is showing, I guess, but I LOVE Mad Men.  It is authentic in every way - yes, I was a teen in the first half of the 60's.  The music and graphics to start the show are beyond belief FABULOUS and I love the rest of the music in the show b/c it is retro and real music.  The sets, the clothes, the actors...I just love, love, LOVE this show! So much so that I watch back-to-back episodes of the same episode.  If you haven't seen it, you must start from the beginning.
If you go the HBO website for True Blood it says Sam is a shapeshifter... he mostly changes into a collie. Like right after Sookie's Gran died you see Bill and a Dog (Sam) watching.  I am addicted to this show.
Let's just say where you have vampires, you have the possibility of all sorts of supernatural beings. There's so many layers here - and while it takes some liberty with traditional vampire lore - True Blood has great imagination!
I like Dexter, Supernatural, and Fringe is okay too. Dexter is my absolute favorite of the 3 though.
I am hooked on SONS OF ANARCHY!!!!!!!!!!!Perlman and Segal rock....
Count me in as another fan of Pushing Daisies.  It's whimsical, quirky and extremely well-cast.  The first couple of episodes this season seemed a bit off compared to season one, but last week's episode put it back on track.

I'm not seeing any love for "Chuck", though, and that's a shame because it is one of the most enjoyable hours on TV.  Adam Baldwin is excellent and if you don't absolutely fall in love with Zachary Levi as Chuck Bartowski there is something wrong with you.
So far just "Life on Mars" and "Privileged".  They're both great.  I'm really hoping they get full season pickups soon and are back for many seasons to come.  I've watched "90210" but haven't completely gotten into it (honestly the only thing that keeps me coming back is Jenni Garth as Kelly) and I've recorded "The Ex List" but I still have to watch it.
Fringe, hands down, is the best new show of the season.  The storylines are good, enough hints of a vast plotline are dropped and there's always at least one good What the Heck?  Moment in each show.

Add to the above some of the best characters I've seen in a while (namely Walter, our resident mad scientist- love this guy and the actor who portrays him) and, of course limited commercial interruptions...

This is one to watch.

Let's hope J.J. Abrams leaves his bad LOST habits behind and lets this show live up to its potential.
I will agree...really love Supernatural (CW Thursdays @ 8) and Fringe (Fox Tuesdays)  I havent seen True Blood yet but would love to watch based on the comments.
True Blood is the best TV show in a decade and I credit Alan Ball and Stephen Moyer for it.  Some of the show is wonderfully campy and some of it is really dramatic and the episode where Gran died really ran the gamut of emotionally charged performances.  The wonderful ensemble cast is sure to come through with a laugh just when you can't take any more tension or drive you crazy with their wacky problems.

But the heart of True Blood is Stephen Moyer's portrayal of Vampire Bill, ironically a man who's heart no longer beats.  Moyer's interpretation of the conflicted vampire is a symphony of nuance and subtlety counterpointed by moments of Vesuvian intensity.  Here is an actor that acts with his whole being: face, voice, body, hands.  Each movement, or stillness, builds layers onto Bill and creates a complex, compelling character who just happens to be Vampire.
True Blood...love it and all of the characters...they are different from the ones in Charlaine Harris' series but in a good way...just makes you want MORE...more Bill, more Sookie, its almost as addictive as V...
