Which dead characters should return to TV?

Dr. Mark Greene is making a well-publicized return visit to NBC's "ER" this week. Yes, it's only in flashback, but I've seen the episode, and it's jolting to see Greene's character again. I stopped watching "ER" shortly after his character was killed off -- not specifically because of his death, but because the show was feeling dreary and uber-depressing to me, and I hated the "very special episode" sense to the plots. (Every other week, it seemed, the whole ER was quarantined, or taken hostage.)

But the flashback is intriguing.

NBC
Dr. Mark Greene is coming back to "ER," but only in flashback.

It started me thinking: Plenty of TV shows have killed off characters, with varying degrees of success. Some characters were beloved, some were hated, some just didn't work. Some were offed because the actor didn't want to be on the show any more, others for plot purposes. And still others, of course, weren't killed off, but just moved to Seattle (Dr. Ross on "ER"), went to prison (Paul Young on "Desperate Housewives") or transferred to the Utica branch (Karen on "The Office").

Let's talk about the long-gone characters we'd like to see visit their old shows once again.

I already let slip three of my suggestions above. Who wouldn't want to see Dr. Doug Ross (played, of course, by George Clooney) walking around those County General halls again? Yes, he's a giant superstar now and it's unlikely to happen, but rumors keep flying. I'd want Nurse Hathaway to come back with him, of course.

"Desperate Housewives" kills off characters nearly every season. Paul Young, who raised son Zach/Dana after his wife Mary Alice killed the boy's mother, isn't dead, but he's in jail, last we heard. I'm sure he'll eventually make a return appearance -- that plot line doesn't feel finished to me. (Remember how Felicia Tillman CUT OFF two of her own fingers to try and frame Paul? There is such a thing as taking your revenge too far.) Oddly, I don't care if Paul's son, Zach, ever comes back. That kid bugged me.

But really, the most missed "Housewives" character for me is Rex Van De Kamp, Bree's first husband. Killed off by bad medicine given him by lovesick pharmacist George, Rex brought some sanity to Bree's household, and his death was a shock. New husband Orson's growing on me, though that doesn't mean I wouldn't love to find that Rex wasn't really dead. (I know, I know, we saw him in the coffin...) He occasionally shows up in flashbacks, but I wish there was a way for him to know Bree didn't really kill him.

This week's "Grey's Anatomy" reminded me: I miss Denny Duquette. I'd easily trade whiny Izzie off the show to get Denny back as a regular. I also liked "the bomb-squad guy," as Meredith so tactfully referred to Kyle Chandler's Dylan Young (he was nominated for an Emmy for that role). Unfortunately, despite Izzie still talking to him occasionally, Denny is dead, dead, dead, and Dylan was blown into a million zillion pieces, some of which ended up on Meredith. Plus Kyle Chandler has a show of his own in "Friday Night Lights," so that Humpty Dumpty isn't getting put together again.

On "The Office," I'm delighted that Andy Bernard came back from anger-management training and is once again a permanent employee at the Scranton branch. But I wouldn't mind seeing his former Stamford colleague, Karen Filippelli, make a return visit or two. She did appear in the episode where Michael, Dwight and an unwilling Jim went to prank her branch for trying to recruit Stanley. Possible spoiler: According to Wikipedia, I'll get my wish this season.

All these shows suck.  Maybe they should kill off all the characters.
How about almost every character they've ever killed on Lost? Does anyone remember Boone and Shannon? Mr. Eko? and CHARLIE (I still can't believe they killed him). Forget Ana Lucia though...her character was annoying.
Bring Back Keamy on Lost, the hot guy I just loved to hate.  Mr. Eko would be another one to somehow bring back.  They could be brought back in flashbacks, dream sequences, visions, whatever.  Anything goes when it comes to Lost.
Uhh, Amanda, you're never really killed off on Lost becuase of the flashbacks.  Do you really think we aren't going to see Charlie this season?

-Greg ('06 K-State Alum)
Please, please, PLEASE bring back Ross and Hathaway, and let it be a surprise!!
Both Charlie and Boone on Lost.  Boone was HIGHLY underutilized and had great potential to be an interesting member of the cast, especially when they started using him as Locke's little "minion".  And Charlie's death had absolutely no point.
I really did like Shannon on Lost, and she had just started to redeem herself...

I like Adam Monroe on Heroes.  I was shocked when they killed him
Oh I loved Mr. Eko!  And lets not forget Warrick from CSI: Vegas!
Rex was cool. I'd like to see Neela's husband, Dr. Gallant, back on ER. Why does ER kill off the good ones? Except for Romano. They killed him off, bit by bit, haha.
i still wonder what happened to Richie's brother on Happy Days....
Bring back Charlie and Shannon on LOST. Shannon was finally getting comfortable in her own skin, and I felt like both of these deaths were unnecessary.

I kind of hope Toby comes back to the Office after the whole transfer thing with his replacement (can't remember her name). He was just so different from the other characters, it really added a lot, both in his acting but also in their interactions with him.
I think it would a benefit to society if the Comic Book Guy was brought back to the cast of The Simpsons.
I would be willing to watch ER again for a Ross/Hathaway reunion!!!
Paul Lieberstein (Toby from The Office) elected to leave the cast of actors to further concentrate on writing for the show. We may see him in a cut away or quick cameo, but he probably won't be coming back on a permanent basis.
Kind of sad as he was one of my favorite characters as well.
I've never seen any current television shows featuring characters that died, but there are a bunch of shows in the past that killed off characters that I would like to see back.
I agree with Cate.  I miss Warrick. *sniffle*  And I also agree with Gael: I miss Denny too.  They could have done so much more with the character of Izzie with him around.
I understand that actors choose to move on, but why is it necessary to kill off their characters, as with Warrick on CSI? Now Jim has been killed on Ghost Whisperer, for no reason that I can determine. If an actor wants out, why not just have his character relocate? Then he/she could come back for "visits" if he/she were willing. On Ghost Whisperer, if Jim is indeed truly dead, I expect viewship to decline rapidly. That relationship was the mainstay of the series, and, I'm sorry, Melinda and Jim's ghost just won't work out.
I would love to see Denny come back on Grey's. My husband and I were just talking about how every show that we have ever seen him in and liked... He dies. Go figure. (ie. Weeds, Supernatural, and Greys).

I would also like to see Charlie back on Lost. I was hoping that him and Claire could finally get to actually having a romantic relationship.
On LOST--Mr. Eko was such an interesting and moving character, I will never understand why they killed him off. Libby-just cuz Hurley liked her and she liked him. And now the man in the coffin who was on the season finale-I will not spoil it for you who may have missed it.

On Ghost Whisperer-I've known for the past 2 seasons that the husband Jim was a goner, but last season's Jay Mohr would have been a better post-Jim person for Melissa than is the new guy who hears (but can't see) ghosts. He is obviously a last-minute replacement, as Jay Mohr has (had? It is cancelled already?) another show lined up.
Lauren Holley's Director Shepherd on NCIS... the lack of closure between her and Jethro just broke my heart!
I'd like to see them bring back Rex on Desperate Housewives. Orson is definitely no Rex!
I'm still waiting on Col Henry Blake to come back to M*A*S*H.
How about Asumpta (sp?) on Ballykissangel? (BBC)
Monarch henchman #24 on 'Venture Brothers'.
Denny, Denny, Denny, Denny.  Maybe Denny has an identical twin brother with a good heart.
I wish they'd never killed off David Palmer (24), he was one of the best characters
Forget about Lost and Desperate Housewives, yuk, how about N.C.I.S.?  Bring back Kate, Sasha Alexander.  How about Jenny Shepard, Lauren Holley, who played the Director of N.C.I.S.?  Have her come back saying it was all staged to see if Leon could be trusted as Director.
Weeds' Uturn. Just when his character was fully developed and interesting the go and kill me.
I'd like to see Lucy and Ricky again, Jack Benny, or those wonderful Bonanza boys, but I guess that's not what you are talking about.
I'd like to see all of Dexter's victims return -- in whatever state of decomposition is appropriate -- for an all-zombie nightmare episode.
You all watch waaaaayy tooo much TV!!!
I agree with Shirley in Texas.  I just may stop watching Ghost Whisperer if they really do kill Jim.  I am kind of hoping for a "Dallas" like explaination.  Remember when Bobby woke up and found out Pamela wasn't really dead, it was just a bad dream.
Kate on NCIS.
Dr Ross and Nurse Hathaway and their twins!!!! I do also like Denny Duquette from Grey's.  Maybe seeing him more to keep Izzy on her toes
No Boone, no Shannon, no Charlie. I actually enjoyed Ana-Lucia.

But by far it's Mr Eko and Jin that I miss the most.
I love Ghost Whisperer and was sad to see that Jim (Melinda's husband)was killed off. He was such a cool husband to deal with Melinda's special gift. Hopefully CBS will find a way to bring him back and not as a ghost.
Kenny from South Park...
Wash and Shepherd Book from Firefly.  Of course, to do that, you'd need to resurrect Firefly too.
I stopped watching NYPD Blue after Jimmy Smitts left.  Where is he now anyway?
ugh - I'm glad that Director Shepherd is gone on NCIS - completely unnecessary character - I would love to see Dr. Ross and Nurse Hathaway return, but I doubt it - I was so upset to see Jennifer's husband on Ghost Whisperer go - and I agree with L that Jay Mohr would have been a better partner - and Jim should NEVER have been killed off - bad move - as for Warrick - I don't miss him enough to wish him back - and I absolutely wonder what happened to Ritchie's brother on Happy Days.....
How about Wash, Serinity's pilot, in fact just bring back Firefly altogether! Can't beleive Fox was so stupid to let a show that great get canceled.
Pres. David Palmer back to 24. With Obama in office it would attract views. On 24, someone can be killed off and come back before the season is over.
I know Burke isn't dead, but I'd love it if he came back to Grey's and messed with Christina.
Starbuck from the original Battlestar Galactica get a guess role next to Richard Hatch on the new BG.

Kill off Matthew Fox/Jack Shephard from LOST please!  The guy can't act, and I hate his character.
I want Zach to come back to "Bones".  He's not dead, but in prison for helping a serial killer.
His dry witt was untouchable.
Also Warrick is sorely missed on CSI.  The show is already failing and after William Petersen leaves, it will most likely die.
I'm glad to see the NCIS fans.  I miss Kate, that show has not been the same since she left!!!
The killed-off character I miss the most is John Abruzzi from 'Prison Break' - played brilliantly by Peter Stormare.  While a substantial amount of the cast was killed off after the initial prison break, his death was the most detrimental to the show.  He added a great dimension the show has been missing ever since.
I was disappointed they didn't bring back Prue on Charmed for the series finale. They brought back everyone else. It must have been really bitter on that set for them to ignore the Prue character.
I was really bummed when the HOMICIDE TV reunion movie killed off Yaphet Kotto/Lt. Giardello, thus killing hopes of yet another revival for a great series.  For the first time in ages, I'll watch ER to see Dr. Greene return. Like others, I got bored with the whiney characters and soap-opera plot lines.  One of the best things about ER was seeing the characters grow, and they've all reverted to just whining. (Still hoping for Ross, Hathaway,  Carter and the whole first-year team to turn up unannounced...)
And wouldn't it be a hoot to find out Col. Blake didn't die in that crash on M*A*S*H* after all? What a cool reunion program that would be!
Oh my God, they killed Kenny!

You bastards.
