Which dead characters should return to TV?

Dr. Mark Greene is making a well-publicized return visit to NBC's "ER" this week. Yes, it's only in flashback, but I've seen the episode, and it's jolting to see Greene's character again. I stopped watching "ER" shortly after his character was killed off -- not specifically because of his death, but because the show was feeling dreary and uber-depressing to me, and I hated the "very special episode" sense to the plots. (Every other week, it seemed, the whole ER was quarantined, or taken hostage.)

But the flashback is intriguing.

NBC
Dr. Mark Greene is coming back to "ER," but only in flashback.

It started me thinking: Plenty of TV shows have killed off characters, with varying degrees of success. Some characters were beloved, some were hated, some just didn't work. Some were offed because the actor didn't want to be on the show any more, others for plot purposes. And still others, of course, weren't killed off, but just moved to Seattle (Dr. Ross on "ER"), went to prison (Paul Young on "Desperate Housewives") or transferred to the Utica branch (Karen on "The Office").

Let's talk about the long-gone characters we'd like to see visit their old shows once again.

I already let slip three of my suggestions above. Who wouldn't want to see Dr. Doug Ross (played, of course, by George Clooney) walking around those County General halls again? Yes, he's a giant superstar now and it's unlikely to happen, but rumors keep flying. I'd want Nurse Hathaway to come back with him, of course.

"Desperate Housewives" kills off characters nearly every season. Paul Young, who raised son Zach/Dana after his wife Mary Alice killed the boy's mother, isn't dead, but he's in jail, last we heard. I'm sure he'll eventually make a return appearance -- that plot line doesn't feel finished to me. (Remember how Felicia Tillman CUT OFF two of her own fingers to try and frame Paul? There is such a thing as taking your revenge too far.) Oddly, I don't care if Paul's son, Zach, ever comes back. That kid bugged me.

But really, the most missed "Housewives" character for me is Rex Van De Kamp, Bree's first husband. Killed off by bad medicine given him by lovesick pharmacist George, Rex brought some sanity to Bree's household, and his death was a shock. New husband Orson's growing on me, though that doesn't mean I wouldn't love to find that Rex wasn't really dead. (I know, I know, we saw him in the coffin...) He occasionally shows up in flashbacks, but I wish there was a way for him to know Bree didn't really kill him.

This week's "Grey's Anatomy" reminded me: I miss Denny Duquette. I'd easily trade whiny Izzie off the show to get Denny back as a regular. I also liked "the bomb-squad guy," as Meredith so tactfully referred to Kyle Chandler's Dylan Young (he was nominated for an Emmy for that role). Unfortunately, despite Izzie still talking to him occasionally, Denny is dead, dead, dead, and Dylan was blown into a million zillion pieces, some of which ended up on Meredith. Plus Kyle Chandler has a show of his own in "Friday Night Lights," so that Humpty Dumpty isn't getting put together again.

On "The Office," I'm delighted that Andy Bernard came back from anger-management training and is once again a permanent employee at the Scranton branch. But I wouldn't mind seeing his former Stamford colleague, Karen Filippelli, make a return visit or two. She did appear in the episode where Michael, Dwight and an unwilling Jim went to prank her branch for trying to recruit Stanley. Possible spoiler: According to Wikipedia, I'll get my wish this season.

I have no clue who any of these people are.  I quit watching network TV shows when I found out who shot J.R.   Just a big waste of time
Agree with Owhole1 - the second Wash said that line (you know the one) I said "Joss, you.... jerk" I knew he was a goner. Book, I never saw coming & he didn't have to die. Resurrect Firefly, with the complete cast -- yeah, some have other jobs, but that show was just too shiny to die.
I'd like to see the Mick, Roger Maris & Joe Dimaggio return to the Yankees.
The best thing about "Lost" is that they kill off characters before you see it coming and leave you wanting more.  The next best thing is that they can still show back up!
From 24 - Nina - the most evil/sexy/trecherous/conflicted character on 24 - and perhaps one of the best characters ever done.  No one was able to get to Jack in quite the same way - and we love to hate her so much.  She was every man;'s sexy yet angry ex-girlfriend that you hate...but really want.  Even though he killed her point blank, they should either bring her back, or her twin.  In addition, President Palmer - and the Evil President of a few years ago were both great roles that should not have been killed off.
With modern technology it is possible to bring back just about ANYbody living or dead (ala some of the commercials with overdubbing of old-time characters).
I would love to see Hopalong Cassidy (William Boyd) and his side-kick California (Andy Clyde) riding in to save the day - maybe on CIS or Boston Legal.  Or how about Reginald Van Gleason III (Jackie Gleason) doign a cameo on Two and a Half Men - just to show how a classy man-about-town really used to operate?

Louis Petrozza in Hell's Kitchen
Laura Palmer from Twin Peaks.
Marissa Cooper (Mischa Barton) from the OC!
Nevermind characters, just bring back "Lost." They pushed it back to January (or is it February?). I thought ABC learned their lesson a couple years back when they delayed it and then saw the show's viewership plummet when it finally returned.
Even though he isn't dead yet, (or might not even die) CSI will NEVER be the same without Gil Grissom
I Love Ghost Whispherer Why must they always kill off the ones that work, Jim belongs with Melinda and the professor was great also. I really miss Warrick on CSI why couldn't they just transfer him for a while then bring him back. I watch all the CSI's and Law and Order all the main caracters are great together. If it isn't broke don't fix it.
Greg Pratt on ER.  LOVED HIM
I'd like to see Maude Flanders come back.
Jimmy Smits is on Dexter.
And I do agree w/Lady Hawkeye....
Dexter zombies LOL
We do watch too much TV, but I'd love to see all the characters played by Phil Hartman (i.e. Troy McClure) in the Simpsons come back.
Maybe this doesn't count because A) the series is no longer on television, and 2) I wouldn't have wanted the character brought back anyway.

However, this HAS to be the weirdest killing off of a character in TV history.

The series was The West Wing.  There was an obnoxious character, "Mandy Hampton", played by Moira Kelly.  A season cliffhanger (maybe season 2?) had a lot of people being shot.  When the series returned in the fall, not only did Mandy's character not return; but, the character was NEVER AGAIN MENTIONED.  It's like she didn't even exist.

As I said, weird.
Chuckles the Clown from The Mary Tyler Moore Show
I agree with the Ghost Whisperer crowd - I can't believe they killed Jim off.  The show will lose so much now - his support of her and acceptance is what made it so special.  Now she's just another person who sees dead people.  At least bring back Jay Mohr, if Jim must really be dead.
I'm looking forward to the day when computer animation will make it possible for us to resurrect any star from the past for new performances.

How about Judy Garland, Liberace and Elvis doing a concert together....

Charlie and Boone from Lost!
Warrick from CSI.  Mr. Ecko from Lost.  Abruzzi from Prison Break.  I can't wait to see the new ER epi as I loved Dr. Greene!
What about Lem from The Shield? He was my favorite character and they way they took him out was awful, a grenade in the car by his "best friend" and teammate, Shane.
Mr. Eko from LOST.  I heard there was more for his character to do but was written out of the script because of differences with the producers.  He was a great character.  I have a feeling we will all be wanting more characters to come back after this next season. Its going to be a blood bath on that island.
Jim on Ghost Whisperer. I hope it was a dream . They need to bring him back NOW. Cheryl and Haley
President Palmer on 24...As a matter of fact just bring back the show period already!!
How about Ross and Hathaway showing up at Seattle Grace?!
I would like to see a St. Elsewhere episode on Grey's Anatomy--with all of the Dead Denny flashbacks, that wouldn't be too much of a stretch. Howie Mandel does a guest surgeon gig with a mystery patient who turns out to be Mrs. Huffnagel.
Bitty Schram as Sharona on Monk. She was absolutely brilliant playing opposite to Tony Shalhoub. The first year and a half of Monk was by far the best.
I can't believe Jim is dead on Ghost Whisper.  He will never be replaced I am sure.  I love Melinda but it just won't be the same.  I hope they can find a way to bring him back.
I think it would be interesting to bring back Prue on Charmed (and have a special showing of Charmed which is not on any longer). To see how Prue would interact with Paige (the sister who replaced her) and to have "four" charmed ones would be a hoot. Of course since Shanon Dougherty was kicked off because she didn't get along with the other two actresses who played her sisters would mean this would never happen.  Still - it would be interesting.  Also bring back Cole Turner.
Maude Flanders, Bleeding Gums Murphy, Comic Book Guy, Dr. Marvin Monroe, Mona Simpson, and Poochie to The Simpsons.
Lenny Brisco on law and order. Good luck with that one
I wish they could have brought back Fred on Angel for the finale. It is sad that she at last found love with Wesley only to have him lose her. Also it would have been nice since Buffy was going to go off the air if she could have re-united with Angel for just a little while.  I never could see him with Cordelia!
How about cancelling all these shows because they are TERRIBLE?

I miss Stringer Bell, D'Angelo Barksdale and Bodie on The Wire.
Shepherd Book and Wash on Firefly!  PLEASE bring the show back!
I was shocked when they killed Hector on The Unit, just as his character was getting interesting.
I would love to see them bring back teh entire cast of Jericho!
I have to second Abruzzi, the two series I'm disappointed in most when it has come to killing off characters (I don't watch Lost) has been Prison Break and Heroes. Prison Break because deaths are unexpected and sometimes important characters, and always at the beginning of a season. This means you've had a whole year to not care about them, which makes their death mean nothing that early on despite the fact you don't want to see them die, it just feels out of place.

Heroes killing of characters is just stupid because you never know if they're dead, and the writers abuse their power of being able to bring back anyone at anytime way too much to make the show give you that emotional hook. Heroes is like the boy who cried wolf, once you've killed off 12 main characters and brought all of them back, when you actually do kill off a character, it's about 6 episodes later before you realize 'Wait, so that person actually died?' That definitely loses the emotional effect of a main character dying.
How about 95% of the cast of "24"?  It's hard getting to the point of caring about a character on that show, only to have them blown-up, shot, stabbed or infected with some lethal virus a few weeks later.
President David Palmer on 24.  The show has suffered since he left!
Kate on NCIS was the most shocking one I remember in a long time.  And those who are wishing for Charlie to come back on LOST, remember that we never saw him die.  The water was filling up but the cut away before death.  And on an island where death does not seem very final...
Tosh and Owen from "Torchwood", of course that would make it twice for Owen!
They need to bring back Melinda's husband, Jim from Ghost Whisperer. I'm not hanging around if they keep him on as a ghost. I hate it when they ruin a good show with twists like that.
Does anybody remember Spear chucker Jones. on MASH ?
I'd like to know what happened to him. He lived in the swamp with Hawkeye, Trapper John & Frank Burns for about 15 seconds.
Dr. Romano!!  He was one tough son of a ....  While I was happy to see the chopper squish hin, I also enjoyed him taking on the ER staff. Dr. Corday was a looker as well!!
