The secrets behind Oscar fashion

Considering that some of our Oscar contenders could be Kate Winslet (for “Revolutionary Road”), Penelope Cruz (for “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”), Anne Hathaway (for “Rachel Getting Married”) and Brad Pitt (for “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”), we’re sure to see some stylish fashions on this year’s red carpet. But what are the secrets behind the fashions?

Last year, our Scoop columnist Courtney Hazlett decided to dress up for Oscar, and we let you help her decide what would be best to wear. This year, we’re curious if you have questions about what happens behind the scenes?

How on earth did Penelope Cruz sit in this dress?

I definitely have some. First of all, how do they sit for three hours (or longer -- let’s face it the Oscars always run long) in those dresses without completely crushing them (see the Penelope Cruz dress to the right)? Even in February, the L.A. sun may be shining, so how do the ladies keep from sweating, and if it rains, how do they keep their hair from frizzing?

What do they keep in those tiny purses? What happens if their shoes are uncomfortable? What if you lose a piece of that pricey borrowed jewelry or rip one of those haute couture borrowed dresses? And how do the ladies keep their spray tans from accidentally rubbing off on those dresses?

Are there dresses that have stuck in your head as favorites? I still love the yellow dress Michelle Williams wore the year Heath Ledger was nominated for best actor for “Brokeback Mountain.”

We are looking for your questions for Courtney to answer with help from Glamour.com columnist Suze Yalof Schwartz. So send them along and Courtney and Suze will talk about them in a new video segment for this year’s Oscars.

On average, how many dresses would a best actress nominee have to choose from?  I know every designer wants to dress the leading lady of the night, but seriously how many are we talking?
"I still love the yellow dress Michelle Williams wore the year Heath Ledger was nominated for best actor for 'Brokeback Mountain.'"

Um, Michelle wasn't just Heath's date for the Oscars. She was a nominee herself... for best supporting actress in "Brokeback Mountain." You should give her some credit.
I still say that the pink dress worn by Penelope Cruz looks like she is wearing a Muppet.
The dress that always sticks out for me is the lovely black & white dress that Julia Roberts wore when she picked up the Oscar for Erin Brockovich.  Classic!
Yes to both Michelle Williams and Julia Roberts' gowns.  Another two that instantly come to mind are Hillary Swank's gown the year she won for Boys Don't Cry.  And, of course, without a doubt, Halle Berry's stunning dress from her Monster's Ball win.  Only she could have pulled that off, very figure hugging!
I know they are loaned to the actors.  What happens to most of the dresses after the Oscars?
Cate Blanchett ruled all in a black dress with multicolored flower vines spiraling downward toward the hem.  Beautiful woman, gorgeous dress.  Can't remember the year, but that dress is my all-time Oscar favorite.
What happens if a gown is accidentally torn or something on it falls off? Is there some kind of insurance policy? What happens to the gowns afterwards, when they go back to the designer?

And yes, what would happen if you lost an earring or necklace worth millions?
re: Cate Blanchett dress

The John Galliano dress that she wore in 1999 looked like she had flowers and butterflies tattooed to her back...it looked like a work of art.  So fresh and perfect for her style.
True, every year some actresses look stunning, but some also look ridiculous.  Do these people wear anything just because their stylist tells them to?  Don't they own mirrors?  Halle Berry's is my all time favorite, drop dead gorgeous!
Do they say the name of the designer so they can keep the dress? and how is it that no two attendees wear the same dress on the same night?
Remember the pink dress Gwyneth Paltrow wore - I think the year she won for Shakespeare in Love - IT DIDN"T FIT!  How did that happen?  (the bust part was about 5 cup sizes too big)
Which Oscar dresses are custom designed for the actress? How do the fittings work? Does the designer have a custom dress form of the actress' body to work from?
The soft pink dress of Nicole Kidman is an all time winne
Halle Berry's dress the year she won the Oscar was stunning.
