Why are holiday commercials so annoying?

What is up with the holiday commercials this year? Why are they all either a) completely forgettable and boring, or b) really, really annoying?

There have been some classic holiday ads in the past. Who can forget Santa sledding on a Norelco razor? (You Tube has both a more recent and the 1960s version.)

I also admit I get a little choked up when I watch this oldie, where college student Peter comes home and surprises his family by making Folgers coffee. (I suppose today, he'd just pick up some Starbucks on the road.)

And I hope that whoever came up with the famous 1971 Coca-Cola "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing" ad got a giant Christmas bonus (in this 1980s update, the singers form the shape of a Christmas tree).

What are we watching these days? Can you even name a good Christmas commercial this year?

Kids in pageants for Target? Dressed like stuff you can buy at Target? Uh-uh.

People hyperventilating as they receive luxury cars with those enormous bows tied on the hoods? In this era of layoffs and bailouts, do you know anyone who can afford to buy a car as a Christmas present?

And my vote for the absolute most annoying ads -- all the worse because they are in CONSTANT rotation -- say it with me, now, "He went to Jared!" Not sure these are technically holiday ads, but those are possibly the four most irritating words I hear on TV these days. I especially hate the ad where the women are texting their pal who's on a date, find out that the date bought her jewelry, and then text back to ask if he has brothers. UGH. Find your own dates, get a life that doesn't involve hovering over someone else's evening, and stop equating your personal worth with jewelry.

Share your thoughts about holiday commercials. Are there any good ones? (My co-worker Allison Linn likes this ad, for Wal-Mart.) What are your favorite classics? And don't be shy about sharing the seasonal commercials you just can't stand.

Caveat: Yes, I know about TiVo, use it often. I still like to discuss commercials. No, I don't think that the fact that I remember the word "Jared" means that commercial did its job...I'm never going to shop there. I know people will post about both of these things, and there's no real way to cut that discussion off at the pass, but just so it's been said.

I miss the Norelco ad and the Folgers commercial too.  I remember an add about Chex mix and it had Vera from Alice (I think) narrating a poem (the night before christmas-type poem) and a bowl of chex mix going empty.  That was a nice, simple one.  At least the Campbell's Soup ad with the snowman coming in from the cold still plays.  Plus the Hershey's kisses playing We Wish You a Merry Christmas is another favorite.
My favorite is the Hershey's kisses ringing out "We Wish You a Merry Christmas". Gets me in the Christmas mood every time. The rest of them are just horrible.
I agree wholeheartedly.  I hate most coomercials but the ones that are rolled out during the holidays are the worst.  that's why I love my Tivo,  I don't have to sit through the insipid comercials that insult my inteligence.
Maybe I'm just not as easily swayed as others, but a comercial has never, I repeat never, made me want to go out and buy a product.
When I was little I loved the commercial with Peter sneaking in to make the coffee - and as I got older I realized what a wonderful fallacy it was.  There's NO WAY I could sneak into our house like that.  My mother has radar when it comes to doors opening.  Probably from my teenage years. *cough*
I also love the Norelco Santa although I had a slightly different version in my head...was there another one around the early 80's that was popular?  This is going to bug me all day.
Oh and I HATE the Jared commercials (how come we always forget them before your summer commercial contest Gael?)  The very insinuation that all women want diamonds and the only worthwhile man is one that will get you expensive jewelry just drives me NUTS.  (then again we've also got a local jewelry store with a sign that says "Guaranteed Monogamy for only $300something" to sell one of their diamonds so apparently this is a common and insulting trend)
I agree with Allison: the Walmart/Coke ad is far-and-away the best of the season.
I've always loved since I was a kid the commercials for Budweiser with the sled, snow and the gigantic horses and the bells ringing in the background.  I knew it was beer, but it wasn't as much about the beer as it was the celebration of the season.  That will always be the best in my mind.
One of my favorite holiday commercials is the Coke commercials with the Polar Bears. I must agree, the " big bow on a car" commercial is a bit much, and very unrealistic. I've been wishing for that to happen to me, and you know what, I'm wishing to this day and will be forever cause its never going to happen LOL
I will never shop at Jared simply because I hate the commercials sooooo much.  I mean really? Women do not sit around worrying about where the jewelry came from or how much it cost.  (And if you do, you may need to re-think what's important to you.)
Agreed. I HATE the Jared ads. The ones I like though, is the campaign that shows a child's memory of the best present ever. "How can you mess with the Big Wheel memory?" There is one with a little girl getting a real pony, and a boy's first Atari system. Fade to adulthood and the grown-up kids are saying "The best gift ever..." and it's a new car.
Publix always has great Christmas commercials; this year I have seen a repeat of the young doctor in a new city who is missing his family at Christmas.  He comes off a long shift and calls his mom to wish her a Merry Christmas and while he talks to her, you see her buzzing around the kitchen preparing a holiday feast. (With Publix food, of course)  You also see other family members milling around.  When he gets to his apartment, he calls her back and asks her to say Merry Christmas to everyone....lo and behold, he opens his door, phone still to his ear and there stands his whole family...It tugs at my heart everytime!  I also love the commercial with the young guy shopping for his mom, debating on what to get her...he is thinking about a little crystal turtle, but decides what she would really like is to see him in a suit.  He walks into the house and she hugs him and pulls off the tag in the back.  That one is great!
I, too, HATE those Jared ads!
My favorite perennial holiday commercial is the Hershey Kisses acting as handbells ringing "We Wish You a Merry Christmas". It is timeless and always brings a smile to my face.

Honorable Mentions to the Coca-Cola Santa and Coca-Cola Polar Bears.
I hate the Best Buy commercials that try and make the sales associates out to be caring friends for the customers.  The ipod one drives me (and my sons) crazy; the clerk helps an inept mother pick out ipod accessories for Hanukkah gifts.  The whole commercial is extremely annoying.
It's not truly Christmas until I see Peter the Folgers College Kid. I can't think of one recent Christmas commercial that doesn't suck, either. Sigh.
ANY commercial that is so loud that it rattles my windows immediately gets muted or if it on a DVR gets skipped.  If these companies cannot show a little respect for the viewing public, then I refuse to view their add or buy their products.

I hate the ones that change the words to songs such as "Happy Honda Days" and there is one out that is messing around with the Hallelujah Chorus from the Messiah (technically an Easter song not a Christmas song).

There are a couple of cute ones with Santa Claus out now. One is for car insurance (I think) and has him with a dog with reindeer antlers.  Another has Santa on the beach.  I wish the beer company would put out their annual Clydsdale commercial for Christmas.  Those are usually very beautiful.
Just how old is the Campbell's soup commercial where the boy comes inside as a snowman and slowly melts into a precious freckle-faced kid as he starts to east Campbell's tomato soup??? The kid must have graudtaed from college by now (...and Campbell's surely helped him through as the commercial is STILL ON!!)

I truly dislike the commercial where the lady is making gingerbread cookies and her friends come over and ask about the scent...a candle that's on the table. The gingerbread man starts to say that it's a Glade candle..and then she bites his head off?!?! What??...and then they cut to a shot of a plate full of decapitated gingerbread men? That's jacked up as far as I can tell.
My daughter and I are missing the commerical where the man puts the necklace on his wife while she is sleeping, don't remember the retailer, but love the little song. My little girl and I would sing it to each other.
I was just thinking about this last week when we talked about Christmas shows, and was hoping you'd do one for holiday commercials.  Peter making the coffee is one of my favorites, and I competely agree with the Jared and Target spots.  There was a commercial several years ago that I loved.  It was to the tune of Bing Crosby and the Andrew Sisters "Jingle Bells", and it featured dancers.  Was it for the Gap??  I also liked the Hershey's kisses ringing bells.
I do enjoy Walgreens' holiday comercials.  Nothing too over to top, but indeed memorable.
My absolute favorite commercial ever, when I was a child in the seventies, was the old Budweiser commercial with the sleigh being pulled by Clydesdale horses. I don't know why, maybe it was the music or images of the sleigh going throught the snow, but I loved it. As for what I don't like, it's ANY Jared commercial, because everyone overacts and is so fake in them.
I LOATHE the Jared commercials.  And Couldn't they name the store something different?

I always watched for the Folger's commercial with Peter coming home, and haven't seen it this year.  It was cheesy but sort of a Christmas tradition though.

I hate the Target/JC Penney Commercials where they have to rhyme the gifts...give caps, give naps, etc.

I do love the M&M's commercial where they are wondering if Santa exists, then they each faint when discovering each other...He DOES exist...They DO exist.  That one is cute.
Agreed - the jewelry ads are some of the most annoying at this time of the year. The prospects of guilt and debt do not inspire me to go on a shopping spree.
My favorite classic Christmas commercial is the Budwieser one with the Clydesdale-drawn sleigh being decorated and then pulled through the snow-covered small town. I always liked it because the message is simple (no words).
Give a, Give a, Give a Garmin.  I will NEVER buy their product simply for this commercial alone.  This is by far the worst ad I have ever heard.  I cannot hit the "mute" button fast enough!
I believe a few years ago Budweiser did a Christmas commercial with the Clydesdales, I'm not sure there was even any words, but they make the best commercials.
I must 100% agree with the "He went to Jared". I find those ads so completely obnoxious.  As a female, I am kind of offended that women are painted the way they are in the ads, but I can't help but wonder if that is actually reality.

I remember a Radio Shack ad that nobody else does. A car broke down on a snowy road and a wife was yelling at her husband for getting her a waffle iron instead of a cell phone. So, she pretended to call for help on her waffle iron. That was great!
I always like the Budweiser ads (the ones with the animals, anyway), so I'm glad they recycle these.  Honestly, nothing else comes to mind this year as a standout, which is really sad, since competition is pretty high for everyone's bucks.  Maybe the ad men decided it was just as easy to "phone it in" from Aruba and they'll get a bonus regardless.  Can't say I blame 'em. :(
I especially dislike the "follow the bouncing ball" -- Deck The Halls -- Ferrero Roche commercial. Not only is it annoying to listen to 50 times a day but the confection itself is less than delicious.
Since remember the word "Jared", that means that commercial did its job.
MY two all time favorite commercials are beer commercials of all things.  Michelob beer - back from the 70's where the one horse sleigh tromps through the snow with the "I'll be home for Christmas' tune playing in the backround.  Then there is the Budwiser commercial with the horses all hooked up.  Course it could be that I grew up in the midwest but there were no words except for happy holidays at the end and it never fails to bring a choked up feeling everytime I see or hear it.
My favorite holiday ad is the one where the mom is leaned over doing something under the tree and the daughter comes down the stares and says "Santa" and it is actually the mom's butt she is looking at. I think it is a Special K commericial.
To me, it isn't Christmas until I see the Fruity Pepples commercial, with Barney on the roof dressed as Santa singing "Ho-ho-ho I'm hu-hu-hungry". My fiance and I will sing or text that to each other constantly throughout the season. It's been in the rotation since at least the eraly 90's, so chances are a lot of people have seen it.

Speaking of my fiance, it's funny you mention the Jared ads, as we got engaged this year, and take a wild stab at what the first question everyone asked us was. (I didn't by the way) So while you and I might not shop there, the advertising is affective in selling the brand.
The coca-cola one with Art Carny & the little boy at Rockerfella Square. A classic, I will never forget it!
He Went to Jared ads are by far the WORST commercials this season and why are they running somewhere around 1000 times an hour??  Even my twelve year old talks about how annoying they are.  Our personal least favorite is "crossword lady" (What's a thirteen letter word for marriage proposal? HEWENTTOJARED").  And I'm with you, NO, this commercial didn't "do its job" because I'm talking about it...unless its job was to irritate me to no end.
best x-mas commercial, Miller, single horse pulling sled in snow, tied with the budweiser clydes dales pulling the wagon with tree.
I don't like the K Jewelers ads that end with 'Every kiss begins with K'--sappy and annoying.
I think one of the all-time best holiday commercials is the Hershey's Kisses as bells - I never mind seeing that commercial air.
I still love the Hershey Kisses commercial to the tune of "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" and I probably always will.
I don't even know the precide product this one is advertising, but the one with the office workers singing "Deck the Halls" to the weird guy who joins in at the end with his over-the-top "fa-la-las" and scares away the original carolers just bugs the hell out of me.
I agree 100% about the "Jared" commercials. So annoying! I always think that that woman's date must not be going that well if she's spending all her time texting her friends instead of talking to her date.  The Target commercials aren't terrible, but they aren't great either. I don't really care too much about commercials in general; there are a few that I enjoy. I am very disappointed in the holiday ones this year, though.

As long as Quiznos doesn't bring back that rat thing wearing a Santa hat or Subway doesn't have Jared asking you to leave Santa a 6" sub, I don't mind the current ads so much.  My all-time favorite is Grandma showing the little guy in the high chair how far away everyone is traveling from, using Cheerios as props.
I don't mind the commercials as much as I find it annoying when the song gets stuck in my mind all day.  I finally manage to let it go, and bugger me if the bloody song is on t.v. again.
I love the one for Betty Crocker sugar cookie mix with the dad and son making cookies together at the last minute in order to make sure Santa stops by after dad eats Santa's cookies. It's just sweet to see them working together to fix the problem and the dad is cute as he's fumbling for a response that won't out the truth about Santa. I don't even find the kid annoying which is rare these days. He's insistent about his truth without being overly obnoxious.
my name is Jared and i absolutely HATE that commercial.  that stupid company has soiled my good name!

oh, and i can't remember what company it is for, but i hate the commercial with the guy singing "deck the office with smart technology."  I can't reach the mute button fast enough when that one comes on.
Excellent...I so enjoyed this piece, and could not agree with you more. When that ad comes on "He went to Jared" I either turn the channel or else,as last night, find myself repeating, in an admittedly nasty tone, "He went to Jared!!!" There are a lot of very unappealing ads on these days, but that one surpasses all the others in annoyablity (a word?!!), ugliness, and offensiveness. ENOUGH ALREADY! Jewelry ads tend to not be my favorites anyway, and get beyond tiresome with the endless repetition. Trying to think of an ad I enjoy these days, but am not having much luck.....guess that says it.....
Most annoying holiday commercial EVER is this year's Overstock.com commercial featuring the out-of-tune country crooning couple Rory and Joey.  They are cheesy beyond belief and the woman's voice is like nails on a chalkboard.  Also, being that I am from Tennessee myself, I especially dislike the fact that the commercial perpetuates the annoying stereotype of Tennesseans all being yodeling, cornpone rednecks.
Coca-Cola ads are definitely the standouts in holiday commercials. I like their sappy penguin and polar bear ads. As for this year, I've not seen any good holiday ads yet. (Oh and not everyone in the world has or wants TiVo.)

I was also recently lamenting the fact I've not heard a good new Christmas song in years.
