Why are holiday commercials so annoying?

What is up with the holiday commercials this year? Why are they all either a) completely forgettable and boring, or b) really, really annoying?

There have been some classic holiday ads in the past. Who can forget Santa sledding on a Norelco razor? (You Tube has both a more recent and the 1960s version.)

I also admit I get a little choked up when I watch this oldie, where college student Peter comes home and surprises his family by making Folgers coffee. (I suppose today, he'd just pick up some Starbucks on the road.)

And I hope that whoever came up with the famous 1971 Coca-Cola "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing" ad got a giant Christmas bonus (in this 1980s update, the singers form the shape of a Christmas tree).

What are we watching these days? Can you even name a good Christmas commercial this year?

Kids in pageants for Target? Dressed like stuff you can buy at Target? Uh-uh.

People hyperventilating as they receive luxury cars with those enormous bows tied on the hoods? In this era of layoffs and bailouts, do you know anyone who can afford to buy a car as a Christmas present?

And my vote for the absolute most annoying ads -- all the worse because they are in CONSTANT rotation -- say it with me, now, "He went to Jared!" Not sure these are technically holiday ads, but those are possibly the four most irritating words I hear on TV these days. I especially hate the ad where the women are texting their pal who's on a date, find out that the date bought her jewelry, and then text back to ask if he has brothers. UGH. Find your own dates, get a life that doesn't involve hovering over someone else's evening, and stop equating your personal worth with jewelry.

Share your thoughts about holiday commercials. Are there any good ones? (My co-worker Allison Linn likes this ad, for Wal-Mart.) What are your favorite classics? And don't be shy about sharing the seasonal commercials you just can't stand.

Caveat: Yes, I know about TiVo, use it often. I still like to discuss commercials. No, I don't think that the fact that I remember the word "Jared" means that commercial did its job...I'm never going to shop there. I know people will post about both of these things, and there's no real way to cut that discussion off at the pass, but just so it's been said.

I love the M&M's "He does exist!" "They DO exist" commercial. It's been i rotation for 6 or 7 years and I smile every time.
I feel holiday commercials are so annoying due to the fact that they try to convince you materials items are the focus.  This is a time that should be about teaching the world to sing and rejoining family.  Yeah they were selling something but with a positive message.  The commercials of old reminded us for the most part of all that should be right with the holiday season.  I don't want to be constantly reminded of how ridiculously commercialized we are with the wrong focus at an important time of year.  I am with you - I don't need Jared to make my holidays.
Macy's has an awesome Christmas ad this year.  I love all the clips from the old time TV shows talking about going to Macy's.
P.S.
Just thought of one holiday ad I like. It is a Macy's ad, and shows some actors, etc., from the past and currently, referencing Macy's. One shot features a 1950ish looking woman saying, "You can find me most any day at Macy's." I like the mingling of Macy's moments of  past times and present. One of the better ones that are currently offered.
Maybe I'm out of touch since I've been married for a while, but who texts their friends during a date anyway? The Jared commercials are really annoying. The car commercials (all of them) are strange to see since "In this era of layoffs and bailouts, do you know anyone who can afford to buy a car as a Christmas present?"  I like the car commercials that show the kids with the Big Wheels and the Atari(?). I kind of like the commercial for Macy's where all the "brand names" recite the "Yes Virginia there is a Santa Claus" letter.
I like the wal-mart light ad, it always makes me smile.
Regarding "Jared": you remember the name, but in a very negative way.  For me, I like the AT&T uVerse technology, and would probably switch except that the ads are SO DUMB they insult my intelligence.  So, I do not want to encourage AT&T by switching.
I hate, hate, HATE the Hallmark commercial with the girl who can't remember the names of Santa's reindeer.
They are almost all annoying, start way too early, and make it sound like the holidays are ONLY about the gifts and the getting! I especially hate the car ads, jewelry ads. So many people this year are out of work, taking pay cuts etc., it makes me sick that the media has raised expectations through advertising that everyone should expect huge, expensive gifts. The really important part no matter what holiday you celebrate, is the time spent with family and friends, not the gifts.
It's a shame you don't live in Cincinnati. There is a cute Cincinnati Bell Wireless series of commercials with Nick Lachey (98 Degrees and Jessica Simpson's ex). He wears a green Santa suit and has people sit on "Saint Nick's" lap while he tells them what phones to get for their family. He tells one mother she's a little naughty but that's ok with him. Adorably cute.
I can't stand commercials any other time of the year and happily zip right past them while watching a recorded program on our DVR.  But during the holidays my wife and I like to watch them, since sometimes there are a few gems.  I think it is true as you've observed that the really good ones are becoming scarce.

The oldies are usually the goodies, and companies seem to still be capitalizing on that.  One of my favorites for M&Ms (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Knidq8QClHw) is still being shown on TV during the holidays and I know that thing is several years old.

There's another one I still see on TV and love it everytime and it almost mists me up sometimes; the ad is so old that I remember seeing it as a child, so it always reminds me of the happy holidays of my youth.  It's the Hershey's Kisses ad with the kisses ringing like bells (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-lxFDVvmUk) while in the shape of a Christmas tree.

So in an attempt to recover the man points I just lost by admitting to almost misting up at a commercial, my final submission is one that never fails to make me laugh out loud.  It was quickly yanked off the air due to the fact that it's pretty classless, but that didn't stop it from becoming an underground classic.  I present to you the Bud Light Horse Carriage (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhDZIMMHCVQ).

Merry Christmas!
COMPLETELY agree about the Target ad.  It makes me want to hurl something at the TV!!!
M&Ms always have good holiday commercials.  As does Budweiser.
I really, really like the Hallmark ad with the little kid practicing his "merry christmas" until he records it to send to Grandma and Grandpa.  When Grandma opens the card, she's delighted, and Grandpa's not sure he heard the kid say "merry christmas" and he has this priceless look on his face.  Too cute.
Commercials I like:

The ready-to-bake cookie commercial where the little boy catches his father eating the cookies for Santa. Perfect set up for this product.

The NFL commercial where the guy gets a paper cut opening his Christmas present and a close up reveals he bleeds green and gold.  As a Packer fan I can totally relate.

My favorites from the past include the one of Santa sledding on the head of a Norelco shaver, the Folgers coffee commercial, the Campbell's soup commercial where the snowman melts into a little boy, and any tacky (good tacky) Chia pet commercial.

Commercials I dislike:

"He went to Jared" If I were to get engaged I wouldn't go to Jared even if they were giving out rings.  The women in this commercial are obnoxious, texting each other while the other women is at the dinner while her boyfriend's proposing.  Tacky (bad tacky)!

The Jane Seymour commercial when she is hawking her open heart necklace.  Is it me or does she seem extremely full of herself in this commercial.  "I want this symbol to become a worldwide symbol of blah, blah, blah."  Get over yourself.  It's just a peice of jewelry.

The phone commercial with Santa as the hip new "call me Klaus" guy.  Santa looks rather creepy with his makeover.

I get all choked up by the toys for tots ad. The little kid goes up to the marine and asks if he's santa. then he tries to give him his list. Finally, the marine opens his hand just enough to get the list. we plan on hitting KB toys (who are going out of business) and buying lots of stuff for toys for tots.
I really HATE the Alltell commercials that are animated. They are bad enough during a non hliday but they are even worse during Christmas.
I agree!!  Where are all of the Coca-Cola and Kodak commercials?  Its like the year the Super Bowl was taken over with .com commercials...boring!
The Jared ad with the psycho GPS unit is way creepier than the gal-pals.  But what's really annoying about this season's jewelry ads is the phrase "Like her, only gold is treasured."  Who thought that one up?  And it's turned up in ads for both Jared and Kay so unless they have common ownership there's something else at work here.

Always annoying: ads for lame games you don't see any other time of the year.  Adults playing Pictionary by drawing on a doughboy? Give me a break!

Questionable annual trend: uptick in booze ads (though they're usually good commercials).

Mostly good car ad: Santa in a welding hood, by Mercedes.  (Though that toy soldier gives even adults the creeps.)

Locally we have ads for Herbergers Department stores that are so annoying. They have a group of carolers singing loudly about "Bringing Joy" with the choice of gifts available. I hit the mute everytime they come on, and I have no desire to shop at their stores. I love watching the old Budweiser commercials when they run them!
I definitely agree.  I too am especially tired of the commericials that claim if you don't buy $5000 worth of jewelry for your wife/girlfriend/etc then you don't love her. I know they are just trying to get some sales, but I refuse to shop at places that equate their items with personal worth.
I'm with you on the "Jared" commercials.  I also hate the cell phone commercial now that depicts an OVER dramatization of a women who trying to find love and unlimited text.  It irritates the heck out of me.
As for the unforgettable Holiday commercial of the year I would have to say the one with the Dr.? calling home to talk to his family while he is stuck at work and then when he gets home he is surprised by all his family in his apartment getting ready to celebrate.  I like that one.  Have no idea what it is advertising.
On another note, there is a commercial on right now for a laptop. I don't know if it is the colors in the commercial or the song "I am green today, I chirp with joy like a crickets song" but no matter what my two year old is doing when it comes on he goes into a trans and stares at the TV until it is over then he goes right back to what he was doing.  It's hilarious.
The only Christmas commercial that I've liked so far is the one for Lowe's, where the mom and kids go out for a while and while they're gone, Dad decorates the whole house.  I think it's cute, mainly because my father would never do that--he feels that hauling home the Christmas tree the extent of his decorating obligations.
One of my favorites was a few years ago when the Cheese ads were out. The father sees all the stuff Santa left and commented that the cookies must have been really good and the little girl says, "I didn't leave him cookies, I left him cheese!!"
i totally agree.  "He went to Jareds!"  ug!  so what!?
OK, I totally agree with the Jared commercial. Whiney yet glib- eh.
Also annoying are the Target commercials.  Primarily, because there are more than one and therefore a lot of money was spent. Better to have 1 annoying commercial and use the money to lower prices.
In the Old Navy commercial, all I see is 'i want, what i want' and it comes off as greedy.
And lastly, do children really think Santa makes Mercedes in his workshop?

On the other hand, I saw the Budweiser horses having a snowball 'fight'.  That was cute.

It's hard to beat the great commercials Budweiser offers up each holiday season.  The newest one with the horses having a snowball fight is great!  Whoever comes up with their commercial ideas is a genius because they're always non-offensive and memorable.
How about "Every kiss begins with Kay".  A cheesy song for cheesy jewelry.
That's when America used to actually manufacture things. Norelco may have put quality first, but nowadays big business puts profits first, to their own ultimate detriment. If Cadillacs were made in china and sole here for half price because of it, it wouldn't matter if the only jobs remaining in this country were at fast food joints. Face it folks, the greed has culminated in the US becoming a 2nd going on 3rd world country, and the rest of the planet is laughing at us for our folly.
Ugh, what about the poorly thought-out Kay's commerical with the boyfriend & his deaf girlfriend? It's just so bad on several levels.
A - He can't even sign with her
B - If you're spending Christmas together, you're clearly pretty serious, so one would hope the guy would have learned some real sign language by that point
C - Then after all the bumbling nonsense & fake signing, what does he give her? EARRINGS!!! It just seems so inappropriate. Ugh
The Elder Beerman "Give more, Give Joy" commercials really yank my chain!  And they are always presented in pairs!  I just want to stab those awful carolers right in their eyes!
Commercials at Christmas time are insulting to the integrity of what Christmas truly presents! It is an insult to the Christian community world-wide because this is a Christian celebration announcing the ‘Good News’ of our Savior! The business sector has water-down Christmas so badly that Christ literally has been is pushed out! The reason? GREED!
This one has been out for a couple of years, but I still love it.  It's the Pampers commerical showing all the babies sleeping while playing "Silent Night".  I have to stop and watch it everytime it comes on.
I know some people won't like it because of the two companies behind it but Wal-mart and Coke have an ad running movie theaters right now that is really charming. A young kid, 20ish, sings about his friends and family as he navigates his holiday party. It's very hip, time aware (step-family, twitter) and sweet. I may not like those two corps. but it leaves me feeling all warm & fuzzy. As to Jared, if my husband gives my any jewlery, he'd better say "I got it on clearance." It's the only way to buy it.
The over-the-top ones from the 80s. Harvey's Bristol Creme for instance "Your palace or mine?" ecch.. most annoying to me were the ones by Old Navy, featuring lots of has-been actors selling FLEECE. Who WAS the woman with the big black glasses?
Don't forget that stupid commercial from Hergerger's where they are Christmas carolers and sing that damn tune over and over and the commerical comes on twice during a shows commercial break. YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE or something like that. Annoying
I like the new Pampers commercial.  It's a sweet combination of close-ups of sleeping babies with the song "Silent Night" overdubbed.  The commercial doesn't have any diapers in it, and it does a lot to remind us of what Christmas is really about.
HERE HERE!!!
It used to be that commercials exhibited a little class and their own unique character with their advertisement...these days it seems that they are just out to either bore or infuriate you. On a personal note, I couldn't agree more with you about the Jar-head commercials...people need to get over it...if you love someone, lack of money should have no bearing. Why is it that the men don't get anything out of that deal?
It's all in the delivery - the new ad that makes me laugh it the one for Betty Crocker cookies where the little boy catches Dad eating Santa's cookies.  In a frenzy the kid gives an escalating "he's gonna leave, he's gonna leave, he's gonna leave!!"  I'm sure by the time the holidays are through it'll have worn on me, but for now that kid cracks me up.
I think that in order to save money a great many of the holiday commercials have been recycled from Christmases(!) past. They might have been cute five years ago, but now they're just outdated and annoying. I don't pay much attention, so one doesn't come to mind right now, except the one where the guy gets weird gifts, like a man's Christmas sweater and scarf when he really wants an electric shaver.
"Every kiss begins with Kay."

All the ads are sappy and downright terrible. Jane Seymour's "open heart" looks awful. Who would pay $1200 for one of those things?

From Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb creating the Christmas-Valentine corridor and March-April-May forming the Mother's Day corridor, we have about 7 months of that song that should be banished from the earth.
Totally in agreement with the luxury car and Jared ads. Please pour hot oil and acid in my ears and poke my eyes out with cattle prods when they come on....PLEASE!!
Yeah, holiday ads are junk. I also dislike the ones for luxury cars....the people who can afford to give those as gifts don't need an ad to prompt them to do it.

My favorite holiday ad has been Discovery Channel's "Give Turkey The Bird" promo for their "Deadliest Catch" marathon on Thanskgiving. Although that's no surprise, since they created that fabulous "Boom Di Ada" ad that we all love.
The Game Stop "Hint or else" commercial is really funny.  :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbd4Mhaunn8
How about the Huggies commercial with the babies sleeping and Silent Night is being sung.
Even though it is selling cars, I like the "best Christmas Ever!" commercials.  They remind me of what it was like to be a kid and receive that really awesome gift!
Guess the commercials are so very annoying, no one wants to talk about them!! :)

The luxury car commercials are absolute worst - who would/could give a loved one a overpriced vehicle with a great big red bow on top?  And what does this have to do with the spirit of this holiday? :(

One of the kids on the Target Christmas commercial is dressed like a prophylactic.  I had to watch it 5 times before I figured out it was an engagement ring.  Yikes.
Not sure if this is a national commercial or just showing here in Illinois.  There is a commercial where the people are texting and all the thumbs have faces.  I have no idea who the commercial is for because every time I see it I change the channel as quickly as possible.  Creepy.
