Movies to watch for in 2009

New Year’s Eve is the perfect time to hope that last year studio executives made resolutions to bring us some high quality, fun films for 2009. Fingers crossed.

Yes, there are some familiar names, such as “Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince,” “Star Trek,” “Terminator: Salvation,” “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” “Transformers:  Revenge of the Fallen,” “Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian,” “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs,” “Angels & Demons,” “The Watchmen” (if it happens) and “The Hannah Montana Movie.” But what else is buried among the 2009 offerings? Here are a few offerings to perk up film fans out there:

“Inglourious Basterds” (Aug. 16)
Quentin Tarantino’s latest (the title of which should drive copy editors everywhere slightly insane) tells the story of a group of Jewish-American soldiers who get off on brutally killing Nazis (there’s scalping involved…). This is Tarantino, so expect some serious violence (after all, this is the director who created a classic scene that involved slicing a man’s ear off). The film’s eclectic cast is irresistible and features Brad Pitt, Mike Myers, Samuel L. Jackson, director Eli Roth (in an acting role), Cloris Leachman, “The Office’s” B.J. Novak and former “Freaks and Geeks” actor Sam Levine.

“Public Enemies” (July 1)
We all know Christian Bale is starring in “Terminator: Salvation,” directed by the dreaded, not-quite-a-full-name director McG . And if you’ve seen the trailer for that film, you know that Bale uses that same gravelly whisper voice he used in “The Dark Knight” (could someone get Bale a lozenge, stat?). But Bale also stars opposite Johnny Depp in this Michael Mann-helmed thriller about how the Feds tried to take down John Dillinger, Pretty Boy Floyd and Baby Face Nelson.

Warner Bros.
Spike Jones brings Maurice Sendak's "Where the Wild Things Are" to life.

“Where the Wild Things Are” (Oct. 16)
Spike Jonze directs this Dave Eggers-penned adaptation of Maurice Sendak’s classic children’s book about a boy who is sent to bed without dinner and ends up creating his own imaginary world of monsters. Tales of how Jonze clashed with the studio have circulated, but it sounds like ultimately the director got to realize his vision. “It’s sort of like (the studio was) expecting a boy and I gave birth to a girl (laughs),” Jonze told Ain’t It Cool News. “So they just needed their time to sort that out and figure out how they were going to learn to love their new daughter.”

“Shutter Island” (Oct. 2)
Martin Scorsese brings another Dennis Lehane (“Gone Baby Gone,” “Mystic River”) novel to the big screen. Scorsese-favorite Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo star as two U.S. marshals who go to a remote island off the coast of Massachusetts to investigate a woman’s disappearance from the island’s hospital for the criminally insane. And, yes, she’s also a killer.

Other films that look interesting include Pixar’s latest, “Up;” the Robert Downey Jr.-starring “Sherlock Holmes”;  Diablo Cody’s “Juno” follow-up, “Jennifer’s Body”; James Cameron’s return to the big screen, “Avatar”; Daniel Day-Lewis in the musical “Nine”;  Denzel Washington in the remake of “The Taking of Pelham 123”; Peter Jackson’s “The Lovely Bones”; and Matt Damon in Steven Soderbergh’s “The Informant.

And finally one more I can’t resist: Nicolas Cage in Werner Herzog’s remake of "The Bad Lieutenant,"  -- a combination so bananas, you’ll probably find me in the theater opening weekend.

Are there any films you’re looking forward to in 2009? Share them in the comments space below.

Eli Roth is an amazing talent, both in front of and behind the camera. He will be sure to add some serious flare to any movie he is in. And he is super hott (yes, with two t's) to boot!
And no mention of the next movie in the Twilight Series, New Moon? Guaranteed to be HUGE, this movie will appeal to all ages. Anyone that has read the books and seen the first movie will scrap all others besides Transformers to go see this one. It is a definite DO NOT MISS
The teaser trailer for Shane Acker's '9', produced by Tim Burton looks to be an outstanding vision and a serious contender against Pixar. Then again, '9' does not seem like it caters to the same demographic (Pixar = G; '9' = PG or PG-13). For those interested, please check out the trailer at Apple's website or go googling for Shane Acker's short film (YouTube or otherwise) that gave birth to the full length film. It can only be described as a touch of Pan's Labyrinth, with heavy parts LittleBigPlanet and Fallout 3 to finish. Sounds crazy, but it looks like it works... in spades.
Don't forget G.I Joe
Sounds like a lot of the usual garbage Hollywood loves to make.
Save your money.  Stay home.
I'm looking forward to taking the kids to see Where The Wild Things Are. I didn't know Pixar had a new movie coming out. Usually I want to see Pixar movies but I am nervous about that one...I'm afraid Disney is going to mess up every movie Pixar makes now.
I would like less sequels. While some I drool over (talkin' to you, Wolverine!) others I want to run from (Night at the Museum, Transformers). Ice Age again? I got news for all you dinosaur tyoe movies---you're all doomed no matter how many times you come back on screen. While a sequel (of sorts), I eagerly await Salvation just because of Bale! All's Bale that ends Bale!
Inkheart... that one might be good.  The book is a favorite among young adults.  Brenden Frasier is an interesting choice for the role of the father, but it looks promising.
Quenten Tarantino is my favorite director so I will PAY money to see his next movie Inglorious Bastards at the movie theater. What a crazy cast, not the norm!

Can't wait
I'm most looking forward to "Dorian Gray." Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray is one of my very favorite novels, and, from what I've heard in a few interviews, they're going in a direction with the film adaptation that really excites me.
Um, where the heck is Watchmen? The only film that matters in 2009.
The Road. It was scheduled to come out this year but was pushed back to 09.
I am looking forward to Meryl Streep's portrayl of Julia Child in "Julie and Julia".
I know its foolish to assume anything Terry Gilliam's attached to will make it to the theaters as planned ... but ... what about The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus? Heath Ledger's final role, Johnny Depp, Jude Law, Colin Farrell? And TOM WAITS as the Devil?

It'll be a nice layover in waiting for The Man Who Killed Don Quixote to come out in 2067.
I'm looking forward to Transformers 2,New Moon, and Inkheart.
Shutter Island.  Scorsese. DiCaprio.

'Nuff said.
Funny how they left out 'Fast and the Furious' with Vin Diesel coming back to star in it.
The 2009 movie I'm most excited about is The Princess and the Frog. It's Disney's first traditionally animated fairy tale since the 90s. It will star Princess Tiana, the first ever black Disney Princess. The movie is supposed to come out late 2009. I can't wait!
I'm looking forward to "The Road', loved the book and was really disappointed when it got pushed back from Fall '08.

Oh well, if its as half as good as the book, it'll be on quite a few Top Ten list at the end of 2009.
And what of the next movie in the Twilight series, New Moon? Guaranteed it's going to be as big if not bigger than the first installment, Twilight. If I had to pick just one movie out of the year, it would be this one.
We Minnesotan's are (reluctantly) looking forward to "New In Town" with Renee Zellweger suddenly being relocated from Miami to New Ulm, Minnesota ... a real town "affectionatly" referred to by the marketers the "middle of nowhere", though it's 1 hour from Minneapolis.

Although the writers apparently missed the 80+ degree summers and think we all live in 24x7 winters and dress like a redneck Michelin Man with some bizarre accent, Renee's sight gags do look pretty entertaining....
Hey....aren't they making another "Sex and the City" movie? It was my understanding that it would come out in '09. I can only hope and pray!!!
Personally, I'm looking forward to "Night at the Museum 2" and "Harry Potter 6".  NATM was really unfairly trounced by critics.  It was a fun fantasy, very funny, and made me like Ben Stiller for the first time ever (I've always been a big fan of Robin Williams, and Owen Wilson was awesome).  It's one of the few movies less than two years old that I own on DVD (along with Mummy 3 and Across the Universe).
Of the movies listed above I'm most interested in seeing The Lovely Bones (loved the book), Star Trek (mostly to see Simon Pegg as Scotty and Zachary Quinto as Spock) and the Tarantino flick (I didn't know he had a new one coming out and now I'm really intrigued).

I've only seen a brief trailer for Coraline but it looks like it might be worth my hard-earned money.
Watchmen is probably the only movie I´m looking forward to in 2009.  I just got done reading the comic book and it blew my mind away.  Can the makers of the movie match what Alan Moore put down on paper?
Also Avatar, James Cameron´s return to the big screen.  I always loved everything that Cameron put on film!  From The Abyss to Terminator 2, he´s out of this world!
What about Angels and Demons?  Great book, should be a great movie.  It comes out in May.  I'm only planning on going to the theaters for a few movies: Angels & Demons,  Harry Potter, Terminator, and New Moon.  There are a few other movies coming out with Robert Pattinson that I may go see
You failed to mention New Moon, and also Inkheart.

Harry Potter, New Moon, Star Trek, Transformers & Where The Wild Things Are are being anticipated by this family!  I found the original Dorian Gray movie with a then 18yr old Angela Lansbury riveting when I was a teenager (40yrs now). I look forward to seeing if the new one will measure up to that classic.
you also left out the new Star Trek movie, which looks very promising.
I grew up with horror fliks like the Howling, My Bloody Valentine, Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, (Loved Rob Zombies remake of Halloween,) and Friday the 13th so i can't wait for the release of the new Friday the 13th. Also cannot wait for My Bloody Valentine 3D. Then in 2010 the new Nightmare on Elm Street. This is going to be a good year. HELL YEAH!!!
I'm looking forward to 'New Moon', the next movie in the Twilight saga. With a bigger budget and awesome storyline I think it will be the one to wait for. November can't come soon enough!
I also was looking forward to The Road. Can anyone confirm what the actual release date is to be?
Fanboys!

at long last the movie is coming out 02/06/09
No mention of Monsters vs. Aliens coming in March from Dreamworks Animation???  Whoever compiled this isn't paying close attention. ;)
Anything BUT Twilight would be great!
I'm looking forward to seeing Transformers
Shutter Island was a great book, I hope they stay to the story.
What a lot of crap!! These movies sound like they were developed in a nut-house. Does the phrase 'a romantic love story' mean nothing these days?
ummmm..where is Wolverine?

You can't get more "eagerly anticipated" then a Comics based movie starring People's Sexiest Man Alive!
Most of the movies coming out look good to me but for those not into transformers it your loss not the rest of us!!!!!!11
Dr. Parnassus brings imagination and Terry Gilliam back to the screen. No one else can put so many elements together through such strife and continue with a vision. The premise of the film seems perfect for Gilliam's interpretation.
As a member of the generation who grew up watching the television series, I'm waiting to see what happens with the "A-Team" project.

Now all we need is an "Air Wolf" movie and a "MacGyver" remake for television and we should be set with our retro experience.
Not to be all fortune-teller or anything, but nothing will top AVATAR this year.  That's why it's coming out last.  Just wait... 12/19/09 - James Cameron rules the world.  (Again.)
I'm interested in seeing where they take the new Transformers, Star Trek, Terminator, and Sherlock Holmes movies.  I couldn't care less about anything else (especially Harry Potter).
Shutter Island, The Brothers Bloom - anything with Leonardo DiCaprio or Adrien Brody in it (ironically both movies have Mark Ruffalo in them) - and of course HP&THBP since I've finally read the book.
Also looking for Coraline and I Love You, Man.  But I'll be seeing one of them Midnight screenings of Watchmen for sure.
I am looking forward to 'The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus'. This truly is the last film that Heath Ledger starred in and I wouldn't miss it for anything! Thanks to the three actors who stepped up and filled in the 'alter' roles that Heath would've done so the movie could be saved.
how about "hes just not that into you?" The book has become a staple of so many women, I bet the movie will too!!
Looking forward to The Lovely Bones, and Shutter Island.  Two of my favorite books!  Shutter Island is one creepy book.  Dennis Lehane is a genius, and who can go wrong with Scorsese & DiCaprio!
I am most looking forward to seeing New Moon and HBP for 2009.I can't wait!!
