Rename the show 'Desperate Husbands'

I still watch "Desperate Housewives," but I have a confession to make. I dislike most of the housewives. I know, if they didn't get caught up in big schemes, we wouldn't have a show. But it's the men on this show who are so much more likable. I'd rename it "Desperate Husbands."

ABC
The "Housewives" are lucky to have their husbands.

Some viewers adore Susan (Teri Hatcher), but she's klutzy, immature, and wants the world to revolve around her. How daughter Julie turned out normally is mind-boggling -- after all, she was raised by a mom who, when she learned Julie's boyfriend might propose, intentionally spoiled the surprise because she didn't like the guy.

Meanwhile, plumber Mike (they're broken up, but that won't last) and hunky painter Jackson, who seem relatively sane, keep pursuing Susan even when she pulls stupid stunts and even risks her health. (Remember the early episode where she set out to hike a mountain to try and find Mike when he was camping and had to be rescued?) To me, Susan exemplifies the embarrassing stereotype of the dim woman who must be coddled and saved by her menfolk since she's pretty, but just not that bright.

Lynette (Felicity Huffman) horrifies me. It's a wonder she hasn't driven sweet Tom, who is one of the most likable characters on the whole show, away by now. Yes, she wants to protect her children, but her methods are outrageous. Recently, she took her and Tom's life savings and paid off son Porter's girlfriend to get her to leave town -- not telling Tom or Porter, of course. Yes, that ended well.

Bree (Marcia Cross) and Gaby (Eva Longoria) bother me less, but they're still connivers. Bree's first husband, Rex, died believing that his wife poisoned him -- and forgave her on his deathbed. New husband Orson has his own problems, but as almost son-in-law Alex points out, she's quick to deride and emasculate Orson whenever possible. (She apologized for that Sunday night, but we'll see if it lasts.)

Gaby and Carlos have, to me, the strongest marriage. Gaby's schemes are more along the Lucille Ball lines -- dumb sometimes, but usually harmless. Carlos was given a really disgusting plotline early on, when he replaced Gaby's birth-control pills in order to get her pregnant against her will. That really felt untrue to his character, and since then, he's proven to be a loving husband and father. He understands Gaby's flaws and foibles, and he loves her anyway.

They've lost a lot recently -- money, jobs, Gaby fears she's lost her looks, and yet they stay together. Carlos told Gaby, "We have a home, each other, work that supports us, and two beautiful little girls who love us more than ice cream. I've never been happier in my life." Kudos to actor Ricardo Antonio Chavira for making those words absolutely believable.

Share your thoughts about "Desperate Housewives" -- and the "Desperate Husbands" -- in the comments. Who's the best-suited couple? Who's got the best husband? And why are the women all so petty while their menfolk so saintly?

I think Gabby and Carlos could have their own show.
thats the point!  the husbands arent desperate.... the wives are!
The women all have their pluses and minuses (except Susan, who needs to be dropkicked into a volcano), but the one who I enjoy and root for most is Edie.  She's the right mix of sassy and sour with a dash of sweet, but she isn't drowning in the bubble bath of lies and phoniness that plagues the rest.  Granted she's more of a supporting character and suburban fakery is what the show is all about, but her brash and often painful honesty is refreshing.
If they do a "Desperate Housewives" spinoff starring the husbands the perfect name for it would be "Whipped".
Carlos didn't switch the birth control pills- it was his mother. They found out after she had died.

I wholeheartedly agree with you on the Lynette thing. She is a scary human being! I truly don't know how Tom stays with her.
I loved the husbands getting together for that garage band, with the exception of Dave. I sure hope he kills boring Katherine & gets sent away soon!
Can you say "Jumped The Shark"?
Carlos did switch them, he claimed it was his mom so Gabby would stop hating him.  She calls the pharmacy and finds out that the extra pills were ordered when his mom was already in a coma so Juanita couldn't have done it.
The only characters I really like are Tom, Carlos, Orson and Bree and Gabby to some extent.

I used to like Lynette, but they've warped her.  I liked her when she didn't want to be a stay at home mom, and I liked her when she had a career and he was the stay at home dad.  I stopped liking them as a couple when they got the restaraunt and she started being mean.
The show is getting boring, but I have to agree that Susan and Lynette aren't very good for the show.  Gaby needs to learn how to be a mom......liked her better before they had kids. She was sasy and fun to watch and now it's boring.
The whole show is getting boring. But I like Gaby,Carlos and Bree the most. Lynette use to be my girl but she is getting to ruff for me to handle.
i think bree is the most interesting to me... i like lynette's soap box moments and gaby is just adorable and i enjoy her lil antics with carlos and the kids. susan... well i won't even get into her because her neediness pushes all the wrong buttons with me. and edie has some many layers to her character because just when i want to hate her she exposes something that explains her actions, but hands down bree is my favorite... she is the most real to me because she tries to make everything look fine and well put together when at times she is falling apart at the seams and that's the most realistic to me. most housewives try to keep on a public display of functionality when they are actually one offset gear from exploding.
When I've watched Desparate Housewives, it seemed to be a tamer version of the BBC's "Footballer's Wives" - and like so many American versions of British shows, not very good. It also seems to have burnt out, and perhaps should just have a big blowout of an ending. Just my opinion, so don't be mad at me.
Someone likes Orson? Does anyone remember that he ran over Mike? And have we ever learned why? I think jumping ahead five years was jumping the shark.
I think you are forgetting Carlos also faked a vasectomy..... hence the children. I don't find anything Lucille Ball like about Gaby or her schemes. Lucy would never have had sex with the teenage gardener.
Personally I thought the show was getting a bit stale, but I am looking forward to seeing how the whole Dave thing will play out.
I wish they could bring back Rex - he was the best of the husbands
Susan is ok, I want to take Bree out and smack her smug, self righteous ass into the middle of next week, and I really, really hate what they have turned Lynette into.  I like Mrs. McKluskey.
This used to be my favorite show and I still watch it every week, however, the season is moving way way way too slow.....get on with the point already...the  dave/edie/mike?/susan story line is the best but it is just going way to slow...move it on already!
I was hoping Edie had finally found true love with Dave, but alas, 'twas not to be.

I think Gaby went too far hooking Carlos into that horrible job.
By the way, wasn't Parker the oldest Scavo kid 'five years ago'?  How come he's now younger than the twins.
Edie rules!!!  Susan is an idiot, Bree is crazy, Lynette is too controlling, and Gaby is a cariacature(sp?) of the "hot tamale".  But, Edie RULES!!!
