Rating the Oscar's best-picture winners

For me, getting ready for Oscar night means one thing: Indulging in Turner Classic Movies annual 31 Days of Oscar. It’s a chance to discover movies I’ve never seen before, such as the fantastic 1945 film, “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn,” which was Elia Kazan’s first feature film. TCM is also a chance to discover a great performance, such as Jack Lemmon’s Harry Stoner in a movie that feels just right for our economic climate, 1973’s “Save the Tiger.”

I also get a chance to revisit old favorites, such as Billy Wilder’s “Double Indemnity,” which features the classic pairing of Fred MacMurray and Barbara Stanwyck. Does dialogue really get better than this?

Phyllis: Mr. Neff, why don't you drop by tomorrow evening about 8:30. He'll be in then.
Walter Neff: Who?
Phyllis: My husband. You were anxious to talk to him weren't you?
Walter Neff: Yeah, I was, but I'm sort of getting over the idea, if you know what I mean.
Phyllis: There's a speed limit in this state, Mr. Neff. Forty-five miles an hour.
Walter Neff: How fast was I going, officer?
Phyllis: I'd say around 90.
Walter Neff: Suppose you get down off your motorcycle and give me a ticket.
Phyllis: Suppose I let you off with a warning this time.
Walter Neff: Suppose it doesn't take.
Phyllis: Suppose I have to whack you over the knuckles.
Walter Neff: Suppose I bust out crying and put my head on your shoulder.
Phyllis: Suppose you try putting it on my husband's shoulder.
Walter Neff: That tears it.

This year, I've started thinking about my favorite best-picture winning films. The top 10 goes something like this:

1. “The Apartment”
2. “Lawrence of Arabia”
3. “Bridge on the River Kwai”
4. “The Godfather, Part II”
5. “All About Eve”
6. “It Happened One Night”
7. “The Godfather”
8. “The Deer Hunter”
9. “Midnight Cowboy”
10. “A Man For All Seasons”

I have to admit that “Amadeus,” “Annie Hall,” “In the Heat of The Night,” “On the Waterfront” and “Platoon” are all very close to making that list as well.

Note: I can’t believe I left off “Casablanca,” which is one of my all-time favorite movies and will hereby be squeezed in at 1 ½.

What are your favorite Oscar-winning films and why? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

THE WIZARD OF OZ
CASBLANCA
THE APPLE HOUSE RULES
ALL ABOUT EVE
CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF
GONE WITH THE WIND
GHOST with Demi Moore & Patrick Swayze
Crash and The Departed were the worst winners. The Departed was a remake that was incredibly inferior to the original (Infernal Affairs) and Crash was an outright inaccurate portrayal of racism.

Let’s hope this year the Academy picks a movie that is more deserving.
1)Gone with the Wind
2)Both Godfather's tied at #2
3)Schindler's List
4)Silence of the Lambs
5)LOTR: The Return of the King
6)Forrest Gump
7)Out of Africa
In order by date, not preference, these are the 10 I like to watch over and over again.

It Happened One Night
Gone with the Wind
Casablanca
An American in Paris
West Side Story
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Annie Hall
Dances With Wolves
Forrest Gump
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

As you can tell, I'm not a big fan of really depressing but excellent films.  The closest to depressing I have here is "Cuckoo's Nest," and it had a pretty depressing ending.  But on the whole, I like to feel half-way happy when I come out of a theater.
1) Amadeus

5. DEER HUNTER
6. MIDNIGHT COWBOY
7. ANNIE HALL
8. ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST
9. A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS
10.NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN
I think West Side Story is totally over-rated.The lead character of Natalie Wood as Maria is completely miscast, and Richard Tamblin as Tony has no charisma as Tony. The music and dance numbers are great, as is the incomparable Rita Moreno as Anita, but I don't think this film deserved an Oscar.
Can't believe "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "Bridge Over the River Kwai" isn't on anyone's list.

Let's do this:
Most overrated films of all time, in no particular order.

Lawrence of Arabia
Titanic
Shakespeare in Love
Ben Hur (except for the chariot race)
Lost in Translation
Top Gun
WALL-E
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Forrest Gump
King Kong (the most recent one)

I realize some of these films won the special FX category, but some of them didn't.

Food for thought.

10 in alphabetical order (includes Foreign):
The Bicycle Thief
Casablanca
The Deer Hunter
8 1/2
The Godfather
It Happened One Night
Midnight Cowboy
Nights of Cabiria
Rashomon
West Side Story

For just a moment, in the wake of The Dark Knight's snub in the Best Picture category, take time to mention the Best Picture winners that never were:

Into the Wild
Pulp Fiction
Almost Famous
Touch of Evil
Brokeback Mountain
Citizen Cane
North by Northwest
Moulin Rouge
Requiem for a Dream
The Wizard of Oz
Stand By Me
The Truman Show

... Shocking as it seems, none of the above mentioned movies received that little golden statue. Some weren't even nominated for the honour. Truth be told it looks to me like The Dark Knight joins a more distinguished list.
"The African Queen" was one of the best if not the
best. It had a great love story, wonderful adventure,
excitement, emotion, beautiful scenery and excellent
acting and the greatest, Humphrey Bogart and also
Katherine Hepburn.
The best movie of all time in my opinion is "To Kill a Mockingbird" with Gregory Peck.  I never get tire of watching it and have seen it at least 50 times.
In the order they come to mind:
- Amadeus
- How Green Was My Valley
- The Godfather II
- On the Waterfront
- The Sting
- Unforgiven
- The Silence of the Lambs
- Gladiator (I know, I know...)
- All Quiet on the Western Front
- Best Years of Our Lives

Movies that Should have won:
- Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World
- The Searchers
- Bonnie and Clyde
- There Will Be Blood
- Munich

Incidentally, Munich was the year of the Crash/Brokeback Mountain issue, which I think was misguided to begin with. Crash didn't deserve to win, but neither did Brokeback and of the two the better one won, even though Crash was only the fourth best of the five nominees. There was a powerful movie hidden behind the "art" in Brokeback, and there was a powerful movie hidden behind the sanctimony in Crash. All three of the other nominees were more subtle and deserving of the award than either of those two, in my opinion.
It's easier to name the Worst BPs:
1) Crash
2) Dances With Wolves
3) Gandhi
These were simply very bad and/or boring movies in the first place, and didn't even deserve nominations.

And the Best BP winner ever:
Annie Hall
At almost 60 I have always been a movie addict. BUT the 2 that keep coming back more than anyother are:
1946 BEST Picture "BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES"
1959 BEST Picture "BEN HUR"
These 2 films have the greatest scores of all time and the best script. They always move me to tears!!

All-time best: Lawrence of Arabia.   It had everything, great acting scenery, story, direction, music.  So many good movies, but that's the one I go back to again and again, especially during rainy days.  Godfather, Silence of the Lambs, Casablanca... all great, but El Awrence's (Peter O'Toole's blue eyes and the great cast have me hooked.
A few of the Best Pictures that actually deserved it:

Casablanca
Gigi
Lawrence of Arabia
The Sound of Music
West Side Story
The Godfather
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Annie Hall
Amadeus
Schindler's List
Chicago
The Lord of the Rings

A few nominated Best Pictures that should've taken it:

The Adventures of Robin Hood
The Wizard of Oz
The Grapes of Wrath
Citizen Kane
The Philadelphia Story
It's A Wonderful Life
A Streetcar Named Desire
Sunset Boulevard
Mary Poppins
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
The Lion In Winter
Bonnie and Clyde
MASH
The Exorcist
Chinatown
All The President's Men
Apocalypse Now
The Elephant Man (OR Raging Bull)
Raiders of the Lost Ark
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
The Color Purple
Hannah and Her Sisters
Moonstruck
Born on the Fourth of July
Goodfellas
Beauty and the Beast
The Crying Game
Apollo 13
The Shawshank Redemption (yes, over "Pulp Fiction")
The Full Monty
The Sixth Sense
Traffic
Brokeback Mountain

Some "Best Pictures" that REALLY didn't deserve it:

Crash (worst-rated/reviewed Best Picture in Oscar history)
My Fair Lady
Tom Jones
An American in Paris
Dances With Wolves
The Last Emperor
Out Of Africa
Gandhi
Rain Man (watch "Dominick and Eugene," then we'll talk)
Driving Miss Daisy
Gladiator
The Departed (obviously a career award)
Slumdog Millionaire (don't think it'll age well)

And just a few movies that weren't even nominated for Best Picture:

Psycho
Singin' In the Rain
To Have and Have Not
Some Like It Hot
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
The African Queen
The Empire Strikes Back
Into the Wild
Dead Man Walking
Groundhog Day
Some Like It Hot
2001 A Space Odyssey
Back to the Future
Yentl
Blue Velvet
Aliens
Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
Henry V
Do the Right Thing
Malcolm X
The Ice Storm
Dreamgirls

Go through the AFI list; you'll find plenty more snubs, mistakes, etc.

Am I the only one who remembers and loves 1955's Best Picture winner, "Marty"?  It is moving in its simplicity and humanity.  No need to rely upon special effects, a cast of thousands, or megastars--its appeal is its accessibility and honesty.  Don't overlook this one!
