Who should go 'Dancing'? Come on, Cher!

The "Dancing With the Stars" producers must be hitting the headache medicines something fierce these days. With less than a week before their show's premiere, ABC announced that not one, but TWO contestants, Nancy O'Dell and Jewel, were dropping out.

Cher's used to the outlandish, fringe-filled costumes favored by 'Dancing With the Stars.'

The Jewel news was expected, as her injury had been known for some time. I'm sure the show was looking forward to playing off some marital competition fun, as both Jewel and her husband, rodeo champ Ty Murray, had been planning to dance. (Murray still is, as far as we know.)

There's a rumor that Holly Madison, best known as one of Hugh Hefner's girlfriends on "Girls Next Door," might fill in for Jewel. And now we're hearing that jilted "Bachelor" fiancee Melissa Rycroft could fill O'Dell's shoes.

But pretend we never heard those rumors. Who would you like to see step into O'Dell's and Jewel's dancing shoes? I'm assuming they have to be women to pair up with stranded partners Tony Dovolani and Dmitry Chaplin (of "So You Think You Can Dance," which has kind of become the training ground for "Dancing's" pros.).

Limiting the choices to women means that the two most infamous dancers on the show, Tucker "I'll just sit here on this chair" Carlson, and Master "I don't really have to move my feet, do I?" P are unlikely to get the call.

Here are a few names I'll throw out to get the ideas flowing.

Hey, if 82-year-old Cloris Leachman could do it (meaning Jewel and Nancy apparently do not have the endurance of an octogenarian between them), why not her "Facts of Life" predecessor Charlotte Rae, also 82? Come on, Mrs. G!

Put the "Stars" back into the title by casting a graceful woman who began her career as the Hotpoint dancing elf, the legendary Mary Tyler Moore!

If the show wants a single-named singer to replace Jewel, no one can wear fringe better than Cher. And if her days with Sonny are any indication, she can toss back insults at the judges with the best of them.

Athletes always do well on the show, and gymnast Shawn Johnson will likely shine this season. But remember volleyballer Misty May-Treanor, who had to drop out last fall? It's been five months  -- maybe her Olympian training has healed that Achilles tendon by now.

And finally, if she can dance at the Grammys with a nine-month pregnant belly swinging freely, surely rapper M.I.A. can get out there and shimmy even though her baby (who is NOT named Ickitt)  is just a  month old.

OK, I'm having fun. Kind of. Suggest your own "Dancing" replacements in the comments, and we'll see on tonight's show how close we all are.

Not as a female replacement, but would sure love to see Taylor Hicks on the show next time!
Kelly Bishop

There was a great Gilmore Girls episode in which Emily Gilmore forced Rory to watch Ballroom Dancing Competitions and she was the mother of "Baby" in Dirty Dancing, so she has acted that she knows something about ballroom dancing...
I'd like to see Cher and Tina Turner on dancing with the stars.
Heather Locklear and Derrick Hough
Since Project Runway isn't on TV and Top Chef is over... I'd like to see Heidi Klum or Padhma Lakshi.  But if we're looking for a star who's days have passed, how about Jane Curtain or Lorraine Newman from the original SNL?
Cher recently signed a deal to appear at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas for 2 years for 60 million dollars so I doubt she would be interested.  Dancing with The Stars is for desperate has beens and Cher is not a has been (like Marie Osmond)
Many Americans hold unflattering pre-conceived notions about the capabilities of the so-called "elderly"  Therefore, we need to see more dancers like Cloris.  Assuming that they are all in good health, my recommendations are:  Ann B. Davis (Alice from the Brady Bunch), 82 years; Florence Henderson (Carol Brady and sassy as ever), 75 years; Diane Cannon (movie star & a knockout), 72 years; Barbara Eden (Jeannie from I Dream of), 75 years; Joan Rivers, 75 years; Racquel Welch, 69 years.  Or, how about Dr. Joyce Brothers, 81 years, or Joanne Worley (from Laugh-in), 72 years, or Shirley Jones (from Partridge Family), 75 years?  My #1 choice would be Florence Henderson because: 1) She is very physically fit (due to Pilates), 2) She is beloved by TV viewers of all ages, and 3) She would hold up her end of the banter with the judges.
I would like to see Mariska Hargitay, Stephen Colbert, and Campbell Brown.
It would be great to see someone from American Idol - my choice is Taylor Hicks!  Campbell Brown would be a fun choice.  How about Diedre Hall from Days of Our Lives?  Let's get Kelly Ripka!
Actually, I'd enojy seeing celebs with some dance experience, like Vanessa Williams, Mya, Jennifer Grey. Yeah, the athletes usually look pretty decent, but the rest...it's like they have no body sense at all and can't follow music or count.
sports figure. Brett and Deanna Favre, Comic...Steve Martin,  Older woman...Annie Lenox (from eurythmics) One who needs $$$ and exposure is Taylor Hicks.  Singer...barry manilow,, Tv personality  Kelly Rippa, young kid  Dakota Flemming. .
How about John Travolta or Patrick Swayze?
How about George W. Bush? We all saw him dance a few steps waiting for John McCain to arrive at the WHite House a few months ago.
Kelly Osbourne, Neil Diamond, maybe even Sean Connery!
I agree someone from Idol--what about Kelly Pickler for this season?  And for future seasons, what about Justin Guarini or Clay Aiken?  And hasn't Paula Abdul said she was interested?  She could do it in the fall when Idol is not on.  Other fun choices--Scott Hamilton, one of the Cosby Show kids, Selena Gomez
How about Richard Gere - he's got the moves
I agree Charlotte Rae would be great to see.  I remember she had some dancing feet back then.  I would also love to see Kelly Rippa, she would make the show fun to watch.
Goldie Hawn!
Queen Latifah with Max. That would be a great match.  Sandra Bulluck with Derek Hough.  William Shatner with Edeta or Lacy.  I wish they would let the audience choose who they would ask to be the next Dancing With the Stars.
I would love to see Cher participate. I think she would be exceptional and perhaps Michael Jackson. I would like to see if he still has the moves.
I'd love to see Bett Midler, or Barbara Stristand...
GOLDIE HAWN WOULD BE GREAT TO SEE ON DANCING AS
WELL AS HER PARTNER
I'd love to see Bett Midler, or Barbara Stristand...
Lynda Carter (Wonder Woman); Julie Andrews (Mary Poppins); Tom Wopat (Luke Duke); John Schneider (Bo Duke); Catherine Bach (Dasiy Duke); George Strait
How about Brittany Spears?  or Dolly Parton?
CHER AND TINA they have the leggs for that tina is insured for one million-each leg- I LOVE TO SEE TWO LIVING LEGEND DO THIS- TINA IS 68- CHER- 50-
Jan, I think you've got a few missing years for Cher, I'm 44 and unless she married Sonny at 10 she's got to be 60-ish.  As for who'd be a fun watch, how about some of the old MASH crowd - Loretta Swit and Jamie Farr!  And I think Brendan Fraser's got some moves too.
How about Ann Margret or Sopia Loren!
how 'bout Ellen DeGeneres, Bonnie Hunt, Margaret Cho, Diana Ross, Michelle Pfieffer just to name a few!!!
RuPaul...or do you think he/she would be too much of a drag? pun intended.
Christopher Walken always works a little dancing in everyone of his films.  I'd like to see him in competition.  I would also like to see Antonio Banderas.  Now that he has taken a break from CSI, how about William Peterson. From Sports, Joe Montana and Michael Jordan would be interesting.  They haven't had a baseball player, yet.  How about Curt Schilling.  Others: Condaleeza Rice, Paris Hilton, Jeff Foxworthy, Jim Cramer, Bill Clinton.
Lynda Carter, Kim Fields, Scott Baio, Olivia Newton-John, Donna Summer, Jeff Goldblum, Irene Cara, Luke Perry.
I agree with the Cher and Tina idea. Both have become more beautiful and graceful with age!
Oh heck! Let's really dream big... how about Liz Tayor? (Does wheelchair dancing count?)
Linda Thompson, Barbi Benton, Courtney Thorne-Smith, David Hyde-Pierce, Josh Groban, oooh-Tom Arnold.
Former CNN Headline anchor Rudi Bakhtiar.
Motocross announcer Leeann Tweeden.
Cher, Ivanka Trump or her dad Donald, Rachel Ray, Goldie Hawn, Kurt Russell, Richard Gere, Gene Simmons or Shannon Tweed, David Cassidy, Bobby Sherman.  I just could go on & on.  My best friend and I have thought a lot about who we'd like to see on the show. It should be like the 1st season where they really had no background in dance.
Warren Sapp provided entertainment and stole the show.
Cher is 62! and looking hot...and the chops to deal
with the judges! Both Cher and Tina are ...kinda
busy but they would be great. It would be tough to
get some of those hi-profilers but as long as we are
dreaming...Travolta, H. Jackman,Gere, or a hottie like Shamar Moore. Comic...Martin (fun),Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock...Ladies(legends)-Bette Midler, Carley Simon,Betty White (a good laugh) so many...wish we could choose too!
How about Jennifer Beals? Flashdance 25 years later, and she needs to prove she CAN dance...
Michael Jordan should come on!  I'm not just rooting for him because I'm from Chicagoland, but the show would be an excellent opportunity to show off other skills.  With the track record for athletes and his popularity, he'd be a shoo-in.
How about Jennifer Beals? Flashdance 25 years later, and she needs to prove she CAN dance...
Tony Danza, a winner hands down!
How about Sharon Osborn? Tom Selleck would be good! What about Shirley Mclean?
The heck with Cher.  Tina Turner is "the bomb."
Barbara Eden & Raquel Welch would be great on DWTS
Cher and Tina would be fantastic.
Bring on Joan Rivers and Sharon Ozbourne! If Jewel and her man were going to be on together (with separate partners), why not Sharon and the Prince of Darkness?
How about Me..!!! I would love to do it...so what no one knows who I am...having a nobody would be a great twist...
Jimmy Smits, Chris Isaak
