It's time for the yearly rumor: 'Idol' is fixed!

The New York Daily News has a source who's saying the fix is in on "American Idol." It's a juicy headline, but it's also one of those stories that comes up every single year, and that some people will always believe, while others will never buy into unless the judges are caught red-handed crossing out the vote totals or something.

Fox
Adam Lambert in the final four? That's hardly an unsafe bet.

The story itself is kind of awesome in its bravado. Not the bravado of the paper, but of the unnamed female "American Idol" staffer who's supposedly "running around telling anyone who'll listen that the team of producers and judges has already picked the final four contestants." (Now every female staffer on "Idol" looks like a big blabbermouth, hey, thanks, NY Daily News!)

The woman is supposedly claiming that the final four are -- wait for it -- Lil Rounds, Danny Gokey, Adam Lambert and Alexis Grace. Wow, shocking. Three of those four would have been on just about anyone's list for the final four. (Alexis Grace is the only one who's iffy.)

Every single year, it seems, there's a list that circulates claiming to have the "Idol" winners. People love the idea that the show is fixed, especially when their favorite singer doesn't make it as far as he or she should. Because how else could My Favorite Singer get dumped? Surely I am correct in my musical judgment! THE FIX IS IN!

I think it's pretty well established that "Idol" has its favorites. Danny Gokey is a real person, who quite tragically lost his young wife, but to "Idol" this horrible loss is a plot hook, something they can hang a story on. So Gokey, and his past, get a lot of air time.

Adam Lambert resembles vampire Edward Cullen in the "Twilight" movie. Girls love Edward (have you seen the "Twilight" themed conversation hearts that say things like BITE ME and I (heart) E.C.?). Thus, Lambert also gets a ton of attention on the show.

Lil Rounds is a young mom of three who lost her home in a tornado. There are entire shows built up around people like this ("Extreme Home Makeover," anyone?). So she, too, has her perfect Hollywood story, and she too gets lots of airtime.

Yes, the three mentioned are also great singers. But it's the combination of voice + story that is making them such "Idol" airtime favorites. It's very likely one of them will win "Idol" without any manipulation whatsoever from the producers, other than the continued harping on their stories.

So why would "Idol" risk having their whole show exposed as a fraud by fixing it this early, when one of the people the show obviously likes best is likely to take home the crown anyway? The Daily News article quotes someone who says "there'd have to be so many people lying for them to pull something like this off."

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying "Idol" is pure as the driven snow. Some weird things have gone on behind the scenes of this show (Corey Clark, anyone?). But in this case, even if those four singers end up in the final four, I don't think it's because the judges manipulated things. They don't need to. Not this year.

Hello Gael,
Interesting choice for a story...about a rumor. I liked it very much. But there is one thing you wrote that I disagree with. You wrote "So why would "Idol" risk having their whole show exposed as a fraud by fixing it this early, when one of the people the show obviously likes best is likely to take home the crown anyway?"
IF that were true then why would Idol bother changing the rules? (Judge's Save Rule)
It doesn't surprise me that MSNBC is advertising the yearly rumor. MSNBC has always disliked American Idol, and I think it's because the shows on Fox are much more popular than anything on NBC. What popular show is on NBC? There isn't one. Poor station.
Lambert has it all, but will not win, It's in the bag for Lil, the fix is in.
So what?  Who cares?  It's Idol for cryin' out loud, a boring remake of Starsearch, or something, pushing the lowest common denominator of music, that dreadfully bland and so easy to forget Pop nonsense.

Did you realize there might be something new out there? Maybe there's even even something you'll like that isn't exactly the same as all the other stuff you've ever heard over and over again.

So why am I commenting on this if I don't like watching a reality show that's already past it's prime?  My mom watches it and I make fun of it when I inevitably have to hear about it again.  I think that my mom watches it, pretty much says it all though.  Enjoy!
If the show were fixed, David Archuleta would have won and Taylor Hicks would have not won.
Please, don't believe this story. Fox would never let millions of ad dollars and 19 Entertainment production costs be flushed down the media drain over something so ridiculous. Can an episode not air without someone, somewhere droning on about how this show is wasting our time because "they're gonna choose who they want, anyway?" If the "fix" is in, how long has it been in? Was it in for Ruben? He got dropped from his label. As did Taylor. Nice "fix." So, did the "fix" get it right with Carrie, Kelly and David?

Lemme ask you this.. Even if there were a "fix", would it really matter? All the network has to do is invest a years time in the winner. Throw them in the deep end and see if they sell, er! I mean, swim.

Fix it, don't fix it. We need more human, natural, non-machine artists like David Cook and Carrie Underwood to stem the tide of Britney wanna-bees (Taylor Swift), did I write that? Oops!
This is a bit like the Final Four in the NCAA. As a former executive in the music biz, I'd say Adam comes in third and will go on to have his own quirky but successful career, but I'm not sure who will be #1. Lil Rounds, too, seems destined for a successful R&B career and will place 4th. I think #1 will go to either Gokey or Grace, both vulnerable and powerful singers with more range than the other two. For what it's worth, I think that Allison I. has an amazing talent for rock and I hope she continues in the biz.
Adam Lambert resembles Edward Cullen??  Who says that?  I don't see it at all.  Adam isn't a bad looking, dark, dude, but he certainly doesn't look like Robert Pattinson.

Look out for Matt Giraud after tonight...that performance was smoking.
the only 'fix' was when taylor hicks 'won'...
spamming the phone lines does not make him the winner...
funny how 'so many' voted for him..but those same voters have yet to buy his stuff as rapidly. Hmmm, several thousand people autodialing to vote hundreds of thousands of times...but those same thousands only buy ONE CD of his...which is a truer number of 'fans'. He was not the most popular...his 'fix' was a joke.
hahaha. So stupid! He looks nothing like EC. Ridiculous. The shoutout was just BS a way of jumping on the Twilight bandwagon.
resembles?!?!?!
this guy is just some weird little dude with black hair ...
and he has emo bangs
edward has like, that swoop
get it straight
stupids
After watching the second elimination show last night, if one of these four is NOT voted off, I might tend to believe the fix is in. I didn't particularly care for any of their performances. I guess we will know tonight when the results are in, won't we?
This is always going to happen with Idol.  The conspiracy theory lives on.  I believe the judges and producers know who is the MOST commercial (simon and Randy are producers, Kara is a writer), but I would hate to think that this show is rigged.  Manipulated yes!  Notice how the favorites get the glowing lighting and the un-faves get the stage lights.
If it were fixed would Taylor Hicks have won?
There is a disclaimer on the screen that reserves the right to alter and change votes... so what?
With Idol's (and American voters') history regarding contestants with ambiguous sexual preferences, I'll eat my proverbial hat if Adam Lambert makes it into the finals. Not to say I wouldn't love it -- I just doubt it. I had my hopes pinned on Danny Noriega last year, and he didn't even make it to the top 12... and we all know why, too.
Adam Lambert's version of "Ring of Fire" gave me chills- SOOO good! Paula and Randy were right it sounded like a combo of Nine Inch Nails, Led Zeppelin. Who cares if they have 'favorites'- those are the best singers anyway- Adam, Danny, Lil.
Adam's song choice was horrible. He was actually scary to watch and I had to change the channel because he was do disturbing. Am I the only one who thought that?
For crying out loud!  How many years do we have to hear this same nonsense?  And when are people going to realize its just a show?  We had a fixed presidential election and nobody cared as much as they do about the possibility that AI is fixed.  As a country, we need to get our priorities in order.

Just for the record... I am a devoted watcher.  My friends and I watch together and chat online during the show every single week.  Some of us even vote.  We love the show and have a good time being entertained by it.  Our average age?  About 40.
Heck yeah the show is fixed. Look at their Top 32. OMG--over half of those contestants were SOOO awful and awful for a reason--the producers had to make sure their Top 10 or 12 made it. They do manipulate the votes.
Adam Lambert's voice is like nails on a chalk board.  He should be ashamed for butchering Ring of Fire like that.
Last night was Country Night,Adam should be ashamed how he butchered Ring of Fire, that was humiliating. I watch the show every week, I feel the contestants should sing the songs to the best of their ability. That was disgusting, I sure hope none of the Cash family was watching.
Ok..so Adam's song choice was not the best choice in the world.  He still showed a range in his voice that tops all the rest.  His song was hypnotic.  He will be in the top 4 and so will Danny.  I don't believe for a second that it is fixed to be that way.  They will be there because they belong there. Because they are the best singers.  I'm not so sure that Lil and Alexis will make it that far anyway.  If everyone continues to sing like they did lastnite, it is going to be a tough call in the end.  Everyone is going to have their "off nites" and lastnite, in my opinion, the only 2 who were "off" was Megan and Scott.  The problem with them is they haven't really had that "wow nite" yet and one of them should be heading on the home train tonite.
Oh come on... this writer has got to be kidding! Adam Lambert doesn't look ANYTHING like fictional Edward or Rob Pattinson's Edward.

This MSNBC reporter must just be looking for a way to tie in to the all the Twilight hoopla... knowing that anything with Twilight in the body of the article will get her more hits.

I didn't see Adam sing but I saw the review. It was atrocious. You've forgotten one thing, the new rule! This year is very interesting because of the new rule. If he gets kicked off, will the judges bring him back?
I agree, Adam was just awful last night!! Personally, I'd like to see him go home tonight. He is NOT one of my favs at all!!
Ring of Fire - I thought Lambert was channeling Tim Buckley (except post mortem). This time Simon called him out on the self indulgent nonsense...last week Simon must have had his tin ear on. Too much hype and praise for such mediocrity. Tivo skip almost makes this watchable.
I loved Adam's rendition of Ring of Fire.  It reminded me of Daughtry's version of Walk the Line.  Adam has a fantastic voice and I, at 57 and still rockin', look forward to buying his records when he gets a recording contract.  He probably won't win Idol, but someone will certainly snatch him up.
Fixed?  Maybe?  But then again maybe not.  Are you voting every week for your favorite?  Does the vote really count?  Questions that make you think and American Idol love to hear you thinking about!

Grand Old Opry Week was interesting. I honestly don't watch what the judges have to say and make my own opinion.  They can like who they want and I will like who I want.

For those of you who commented on Adam Lambert looking like Edward Cullen.......I am right there with those of you who said WHAT?  For Twilight fans....they can clearly see he is nothing like Robert Pattinson or a vampire for that matter!!! Just another gimick to get votes.  I personally couldn't watch his whole performance last night.  It was creepy.  He has an excellent voice but reminded me of Adam Ant!
No one thought that Jordin Sparks was going to win AI. She was not the favorite going into the season and she didn't have a great story.  There is no way AI is fix...guided...maybe, but not fixed.
By fixed you mean that the best performers to date are the favorites?

Are you kidding?  This rumor is crap.  Pure and total crap.  The Veto is a good thing because should Lil get voted off (country week was not good to her) then they can save her.  I'm okay with that.  I want to see what else she can do.

And Danny winning?  That's okay too.  He's a great singer, and he does make you "feel" the song like Randy Travis stated last night.

And Adam looks nothing like Rob.  Has the author ever really looked at the Twilight posters?  Not even close.  Adam's not ugly, but he's not Rob.  Not by a long shot...
I liked Adam's rendition of Ring of Fire, but it also gave me a few freaky memories of the movie "Silence of the Lambs."
I do not believe Idol would take the chance of rigging the show. It would help if when they tell us how many voted that they would also tell how many votes the contestant received. That would show its not rigged and public vote is being counted and accurate.
I loved Adams rendition of Ring of Fire!  He's like David Cook in a way that he makes songs his own and very memorable.  And what a voice on him!  Such control and range.  He really is incredible and original.  He and David Gokey were my favorites for the night.  They will definitely be in the final two.

Can we all agree now that Adam Lambert is totally overrated and has the most disgusting pancake makeup job and icky skin on television?!?  Also, you can tell he thinks he's awesome and it is totally unwarranted.
David Archuletta over David Cook?  NO WAY.   I LOVE ADAM LAMBERT!!  Yes, he's out there ... over the top ... but he's not karaoke!!  Rob?  The guy who forgot how to comb his hair?  PUHLEEZ.   is that s'posed to be sexy?  gross.  Randy Travis looked AFRAID of Adam.
Adam looks like Rob???  Have you ever watch Twilight???  Go get some DVD this weekend.
If it was fixed last year, then Cook would have won since he was more easily marketable and came without the baggage of young age and strict religious values. Oh wait, Cook did win.  But I'm sure that had nothing to do with Simon going on Ellen and Leno days before the finale and saying he thought Cook deserved to win.
Numer 1.......I wish Idol would get rid of Simon Cowell.  Anyone who finds pleasure in being so rude (he can't even get along with the other judges)should be knocked down a peg or two.  How about a little humility, Simon.  You can ask Paula if you don't know what that means.
Number 2.......Do you not have anything more news worthy than Idol to express your views???
Social Distortion already did a rock cover of "Ring of Fire."
"If the show were fixed, David Archuleta would have won and Taylor Hicks would have not won."

No. David Cook would have won. Former Idol producer Nigel Lythgoe admitted he always wanted Cook to win. They worked their best manipulation to achieve that outcome and they succeeded. Nigel even admitted that he voted for Cook. The fact that people still think Archuleta was who the producers wanted to win just shows how manipulated the audience really was. Cook was always shown as the "underdog" and Archuleta the "frontrunner." Hardly the case. Cook never lost a song choice, he was always allowed to re-arrange songs, etc. Archuleta rarely got his first song choice (and not because of clearing rights, either) and was told he couldn't re-arrange certain songs.
If the fix were in, neither Taylor Hicks nor Rueben Studdard would've won.
Alison is the bomb! Of course idol is rigged a bit! The judges always put ringers into the top 24 so some have a chance at getting into the top 12. This year, it's Meagan (sp?) Joy. She was outright hand-picked!While I respect & admire artistic risks, Adam's version of Ring of Fire last night was just terrible.
It's far-fetched to believe that the results are fixed by the producers, since dialidol demonstrates that losers can be picked by sampling how relatively busy each contestant's phone line (from people voting) is.
I believe that Scott McIntyre will be in the top 4. He has a story behind him just like danny and lil. I think that he is inspiring and people will definitely vote for him!!!
And by the way Adam looks NOTHING like Edward Cullen from Twilight!
Look at the winners - girl, boy, girl, boy, etc. That means it will be a girl this year.
Sure idol has some things fixed but for the entertainment parts of the show to keep us coming back and back to see whats going to happen each week. Adam is such a great entertainer week after week he comes up with a different part of who he is... Danny and Adam will be the 2 on the final week and Danny is great BUT ADAM is the better of the 2 and he will  be OUR WINNER because of his range and control and stage presence
