Introducing the Rod Stewart Rule

You may have heard people joking about their "list," as in "Well, if Brad Pitt calls ... he's on my LIST!" The idea is that they keep a mental list of three (or five, or 10) celebrities they'll likely never meet, and joke to their partner that should Pitt ever call, they get a free pass on cheating, since he's on their list.

Sorry, Rod Stewart, but you were the inspiration for the Rule.

I don't have a celebrity cheating list, but I have something similar. I call it the Rod Stewart Rule. In my head, I keep a list of three musical acts that I just can't stand to hear. If one of those acts comes on the radio, I invoke the Rule. The Rule gives me the right to change the station, instantly, no questions asked, no argument, simply because that act is on my list.

As you may have guessed, Rod Stewart is at the top of my list. Before his fans barrage me with angry comments, I'm not debating the man's talent. Just to become qualified for the Rod Stewart Rule you need to be talented and long-lived in the music industry. It would be ridiculous to put Dexy's Midnight Runners on your list since radio stations only ever play one song by them. Rod Stewart is in constant rotation.

That's part of the Rule. Lists are going to vary by person based on the kind of radio stations you listen to. Since my in-car choices are heavy on '70s and '80s hits, so is my list. If you're a death-metal fan, maybe Cannibal Corpse is on your list. If you love Broadway songs, maybe you race to snap the station off every time an Andrew Lloyd Webber tune makes an appearance. Half the fun of the Rule is how personalized it can be. (My other two? The Eagles and Fleetwood Mac, although I sometimes switch out the Mac for Elton John.)

For me, the problem with Rod Stewart is that legendary rasp. It's made him famous, but for me, it's like fingernails on a chalkboard. People love it, that's their right, but what can I tell you? He's on my list. Maybe I once had a cruel teacher with that kind of scratchy voice, or maybe I just heard "Do You Think I'm Sexy?" one too many times.

The beauty about the Rule is that it automatically silences all argument. I love Prince, but if "I Would Die 4 U" comes on the radio and my pal invokes the Rule, I have to turn him off. That's why you only get three choices -- maybe you hate every song the 1980s ever produced, or all country songs, but too bad. You get three strikes only.

Your list can change with time. Maybe I'll grow to love Rod Stewart, or maybe I'll decide one day that Chris Cornell's rasp is way worse than Rod's, and replace him with Soundgarden. Just don't fake it and pretend every song you hate is from someone on your list. You will get caught.

Want to create your own Rod Stewart Rule list? Rod doesn't have to be on it. Maybe your list is Billy Joel, Taylor Hicks, and Amy Winehouse. Or Celine Dion, The Eagles, and Britney Spears. Or ELO, BTO and CCR. You can even bring out the big guns and invoke such venerated acts as The Beatles, The Stones, and The Doors. It's your list! Share them in the comments.

Tom Petty,Genesis/Phil Collins and Metallica..
AC/DC - i not only want to change the station, i want to rip the radio out and throw it out the window!
I'm not sure it's really a rule, by my automatic radio turn off song is "Kokomo" by the Beach Boys. I was working at radio stations when it made its way up and down the charts, so I heard it way too many times each day.
ok - my list is:
1. The Rolling Stones
2. Bob Seager
3. KC and the Sunshine Band
The 2 top acts on my list - Britney Spears and
Bob Dylan.  Both of them make my ears bleed.
I have had this rule for a very long time... it has been Santana, The Doors, and anything by an Eagle after they weren't The Eagles.
My list has existed for decades. Top of the list: Bob Seger. A close second is Styx (I'm looking at you, "Babe".) Also, for individual songs, Derek & The Dominoes' "Layla" is right up there with "Night Moves" and "Babe". That's my list. Thank you for letting me share it.
Celine Dion, Britney, and Lady Ga Ga's "Pokerface" are on my list. Just "Pokerface" though. I still cannot help but do the driving fanny wiggle whenever "Just Dance" hits the airwaves.
My musical tastes are pretty broad, and I think my list is also influenced by the fact that I usually have my husband and kids in the car with me...so these are the three I'd adhere to to protect my sanity:
1.) Chris Brown (this pretty much cancels out my daughter's entire play list come to think of it)
2.) Prince (never seen the attraction)
3.) Andrew Lloyd Webber (I think Roger Waters said it best about ol' Andrew in "It's a Miracle")
Nickelback. Ugh.
My list:

The Doors
K. C. and the Sunshine Band
The Village People

Any of these come on a radio, I punch out. No matter what.
THE ROLLING STONES

MACIE GRAY

THE ORIGINAL NO-TALENT ASS-CLOWN MICHAEL BOLTON
Mariah Carey
Gloria Estefan
System of a Down
1)Bruce Springsteen
2)The Boss
3)The E Street Band
Lionel Richie, Tears for Fears, and Christine Aguilera.  They literally make me want to throw up.
Led Zepplin, Rush and Metallica.
Guess YOU are on everyone's list.  That's why there are no comments.
I love you.

My list: Rod Stewart, Lionel Ritchie, and Celine Dion.
I can think of only two for my list, so I'm putting Nickleback on there twice, just to make extra sure.  Creed would be the other one.
James Taylor, Barry Manilow, Celine Dion. Without fail.
Dumb idea.  I don't need a rule to change the station.  If something comes on that I don't like, I am changing it...no questions asked.
supertramp, boston & foreigner.
My husband (and sister and brother) and I agree wholeheartedly about one band. It is the only one on our "Rod Stewart List."
Nickelback. (shudder) I don't even like to type their name.
I can't go on about how much we hate them because I don't want to think about them anymore.
My list would be:

1) Anything by Celine Dion

2) Anything by Meatloaf

3) Anything by Bryan Adams

Those three are MY "nails on a chalkboard"
Well I have the same type of "list," but it applies to commericals. Extenz is number 1 on my list. I hit the mute button, way before the sappy wife says "This could be fun"
The Volkswagon Ruton commerical was number 2, where they say women are getting pregnant to get one. Yes, the Ad execs are really reaching new lows with this one. Trying to be cute and actualy being insulting, way to go Brook Shields!
I have a few others, but the sappy wife's "this could be fun", keeps swirling around in my brain, I guess they got their point accross, but I have too, MUTE!
The Stones, The Doors, and Elton John.
LED ZEPPELIN - MAKES MY EARS BLEED. I'LL FORGOE THE OTHER TWO JUST TO MAKE CERTAIN THE ZEP IS A NO GO.
1. U2
2. U2
3. U2
AC/DC (ick), Phil Collins/Genesis (lame), The Who (ew). I was once stuck for five hours at a Phish concert during which they covered THe Who's Quadrophenia in its entirety. I thought I was going to die of boredom.
I second beth in cleveland!  nickelback, ugh!  I couldn't watch my brother and his new wife dance their first song b/c they chose this awful band for their song.
Billy Joel, Britney Spears, Celine Dion
My rule is much more specific and yet flexible

I apply the rule to any individual song that I've heard more than twice in the past 24 hours.
1. Jive Bonnie (Bon Jovie)
2. Journey
3. Styx
4. Bill Bailey (Guns & Roses)
5. Ted Nugent (especially "Cat Scratch Fever"!)
6. Heart's "Baracuda", man that song sucks rhino!
7. Phil Collins (pure, cheap, commercial do-do)
The Bad B's:

Bad Company
Boston
Bachman-Turner Overdrive

XM Radio insists on playing these guys in the same rotation with Traffic, "Bare Trees" era Fleetwood Mac, and Pink Floyd. Whattup with that?!
Unfortunately, the rules of the list include a limit of only 3 "artists", because there are many!  But,for me, its got to be:

1.  The Doors
2.  Bob Dylan
3.  Tom Petty (Anything recorded after 1981)

Makes me want to rip my ear off just THINKING about them!  Oh, and by the way...Bruce Springsteen is a close runner up!  NO MORE MUMBLING THROUGH A SONG, PEOPLE!  DO YOU HEAR ME, BOB, TOM & BRUCE???
I can't change the station fast enough when I hear the opening notes of "Old Time Rock and Roll".
Rod Stewart, Rod Stewart, Rod Stewart
Willie Nelson.
Willie Nelson.
Willie Nelson.
#1 John Mayer.  He really thinks he is something special and quite the "funny guy" when in actuality he sounds like a Dave Matthews rip off and always has.
#2 Jaime Fox.  Just cannot stand this guy's voice, attitude, humor or ability to take a Ray Charles impression and somehow manipulate that into a singing career.
#3 Dixie Chics. Thank the heavens that their idiot lead singer managed to offend most of the country with her moronic political banter (should maybe just stick to hair bleach and twang sweetie) so we haven't been subjected to much of that howling, whining, nasal screech that inexplicably attracted listeners...
1) Michael Bolton (talk about an irritating "rasp")
2) Michael Bolton (his voice evokes images of his scraggly, greasy hair)
3) Michael Bolton (ugh!)
Billy Joel - still wishin for the "uptown girl!"
Poco - remember them!
Any of the stuff my 15 year-old daughter listens to ... repeatedly ... repeatedly ... and repeatedly!!

How could anyone have The Stones, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Bruce and The Doors on their list!  Give me any of those 24/7 ... just like my daughter with her "stuff!"

I have way more than 3 also but here is the top 3
1. U2
2. Pink Floyd
3. The Doors
by the way, Rod Stewart can do no wrong!!
1.  U2
2.  Michael Bolton
3.  Nickelback
Ha, I had to smile when I saw Nickelback on more than one list. They are an instant station changer. Rush would be second on my list. My husband threatens to play his Rush cd when the kids argue in the car.
Mine would be, in no certain order:

Dave Matthews Band - I swear, just hearing that whinny icantunderstandaworduaresaying voice makes me ill!
Mariah Carey - enough with the screeching all ready! when she hits those high notes, she sounds like a dolphin!
Nickelback - all their tunes are just one very long song, nothing sounds original, it all sounds the same!
Steely Dan, Supertramp, Nickelback
Mariah Carey is at the top of my "Change the Station" list.  I can not suffer through any of her screech filled songs.  At the other end of my spectrum is Huey Lewis & The News.  When they come on, the volume is cranked up and I demand complete silence until the song is complete.  Huey is also at the top of my "Other List", a fact that my husband is well aware of!  So Huey, if you are reading this...................
EASY!

Mariah Carey
Celine Dion
Bob Dylan
It's pretty funny how some users will single out metal bands like Metallica and System of A down while including Maria Carey, Gloria Estefan, Genesis and Phil Collins. Funny, how Metallica and System have absolutely NOTHING to do with the other singers.
