Last call at 'Earl's' Crab Shack

When I first saw the "My Name Is Earl" pilot back in 2005, I dismissed it as another show with a weirdly overcomplicated plot. Hit by a car after winning the lottery, Earl Hickey is introduced to the concept of karma and decides to make a list of all the wrongs he's done in his life and go about making up for them.

NBC
Earl Hickey (Jason Lee) will be missed.

But while I was on maternity leave, I found myself up late a lot of nights, and plugged the first season of "Earl" into the  DVD player. And I started to love it.

Start with the lack of a laugh track. (Why, in 2009, does the laugh track even exist?) Move on to the fact that Earl and his pals often pull humor from the fact that they are barely scraping by, a welcome change from the "Real Housewives" glitz. Add in the excellent comic timing of the leads, especially Jason Lee as Earl, Ethan Suplee as Randy, Jaime Pressley as Earl's ex-wife Joy, and Eddie Steeples as Joy's new husband, Darnell.

There's also a whole universe of delightfully weird supporting characters, from Patty the Daytime Hooker to Willie the One-Eyed Mailman to Earl and Randy's sweetly befuddled parents. And few sitcom settings sprang to life like the scrubbly, barren Camden County, so out-of-step with the country that it declared itself its own nation during the Civil War, supporting neither side. That lasted all of 15 minutes.

In my favorite episode, "Y2K," the cast wakes up hungover on New Year's Day 2000 to an empty town. Everyone's at a parade, but the main characters assume the world has come to an end, so they decide to move into a big-box store, with each character taking over a different section. Earl gets snack foods, simple Randy gets toys, pregnant Joy takes cosmetics. (When Earl tells her a pregnant woman shouldn't be bleaching her teeth, she sneers, "Says the stupid government. Which is dead.") Life in a store -- it's every little kid's joyous dream, brought to life by a group of childlike adults.

But the show wasn't pure comedy. There was almost always a sweet message to an "Earl" plot. People helped each other. Family and friends stuck together. Even though Earl was a petty crook, he was trying to make lives better, minus the Hallmark saccharine of many sitcoms. The message came through because Earl was such a screwup in so many ways. He lived with his brother in a motel, had never had a successful marriage, was cheated on by Joy. He was a misfit surrounded by, and taking comfort from, other misfits. If he had a lesson to teach, it was that it was never too late to try and be a better person, whatever cards fate had dealt you, and despite the mistakes of your past. Top-notch writing and acting meant that message never came across as preachy, but instead as knock-down, drag-out hilarious.

NBC canceled "Earl" last month, and although TBS, ABC and Fox reportedly showed some early interest, it looks like "Earl" has crossed the final item off his list. In a world where "The Bachelor" is on approximately its 400th season, and where every Kardashian has her own show, this is the show that gets the axe? I would have thought karma would have treated "Earl" more kindly.

I couldn't agree more.  So sad that "Earl" is over, I will really miss it!
I'm going to miss Earl!  I thought it was a great show and I know people that could live in Camden County.  I love all of the cast - such a great fit with each other.  I never heard is the show going to be left hanging . . . with us not knowing the father of Earl Jr.?
I loved this show! The best episode was the "Cops" episode, that turned me into a fan. Yet they keep all of this other junk on TV. What a shame!
I loved the show.  I was sad to see that it was cancelled.  It was a fresh breath of air compared to all of the Law and Order/CSI and other boring junk on tv.  It was interesting to see the characters grow and change each season.  I don't watch nearly as much tv these days anyway because there is not much quality tv left.
Thank you for capturing everything I loved about "Earl".  With its huge, eccentric supporting cast and its vulgarity with a big heart, it reminded me of the very early seasons of The Simpsons.  It probably didn't have more than one more season left in it, but I deserved a better ending.
Hate to see the end of "Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles". Wasn't a great show, but was fun. Wish network TV would just leave things alone sometimes and let them grow. Sure, Terminator may never have become a blockbuster like Desperate Housewives or LOST, but it still had a loyal following, who will now have to latch on to something else and start all over again. And what will they replace these shows with? Some mindless dribble.
Was I a fan?  I LOVED that show.  I didn't know it was canceled until I read this article.  I thought it was second funniest show on T.V., the first being “Chuck”.  The decision to cancel Earl scares me.  If they can come to that decision will the make the same decision for other programs like “Chuck”?

Sometimes I think the TV executives are taking us in the direction you see sometimes in movies.  You know, where they depict a really over-the-top state of television where the reality shows are just crazy stupid.

I really think it shows what direction this country is headed in, although I guess "My Name is Earl" isn’t exactly the direction you want either. :-)
You nailed it.  Earl is a great show - my wife and I have both been fans since the pilot.  Always liked
Jason Lee - expecially his Mall Rats role and we both think he should have been offered the job of hosting the Tonight Show.  And you are sooooo right, there are so many same old thing reality shows - just goes to show how shallow the viewing audience in this country have become...pittiful.  Go Earl!
I loved "My Name Is Earl".  My favorite episode was the one which the characters are at the Crab Shack watching an old episode of "COPS" which featured the characters on the show.
Looooved Earl! Who can't identify with Jason Lee's character at least some of the time? Knowing there's a better way and trying to get there, despite ourselves. It really and truly deserved better than a cancellation.
I like Earl when it first started because it was a bunch or Stereotypical characters that, over the course of each episode, proved that they weren't stereotypes.

Then it became the reversal, and the characters became nothing but one dimensional stereotypes and I stopped watching a couple seasons ago, after the strike.

it's a shame, so much potential.
"Earl" was / is an awesome show.  I can't believe NBC cancelled it.  But, it's true to form.  Good shows get cancelled all the time.
I have all the episodes of Earl on my iTunes and watch them as I fly across the country which I do often.  I find a lot in common with Earl in a world deviod of Earl's.  Maybe it is just an old hippy's dream, but I want to see a world full of Earl's.  The show may have been canceled by dream has not...
Loved Earl and so sad that another network won't pick it up.  Gonna miss this show that always made me laugh!
My 16YO daughter and I love "Earl." As you say, the writing and acting are excellent. It manages to wring genuine, good-hearted humor out of poverty, race, and illegal immigration. The characters are loving and supportive of each other without ever being saccharine. The show's cancellation is a terrible shame. We will miss it very much.
I loved the first season as well.  Unfortunately, the later episodes did not come close to the quality of the first season.  I don't know for sure, but I would guess, that the writers had changed because the show seemed so different than its former self.

If all we were going to get was more of the later style episodes, Earl's demise is a relief.  I do however lament the loss of the show as it was presented in the first season.
Sadly, some religious critics didn't like the idea that Earl pushed an Eastern concept - Karma.

But, even the 'new' book - The Secret pushes a lot of the same ideas of putting out positive energy to get positive energy back. And putting it into the blue-collar, welfare-check and petty crime world Earl lived in made it that more charming.

I absolutely loved this show and it will truly be missed. The casting was perfect, the stories delightful as well as full of belly laughs (like Earl trying to hold Joy and Crabman's wedding in a public park) or Earl being chased by a one-legged woman with a shotgun for stealing her car).
I really enjoyed "Earl" the 1st 2 seasons and then, somehow the plots were even more over the edge than they already were.
Thanks for a good run and a lot of laughs!
i'm with you, reality television has decimated real talent--some of us saw this coming, but too many others still watch that dribble, and this is what those of you watching that dribble have done to tv
I am truely disappointed that Earl will be cancelled. it is one of my favorite shows. I hope it gets a stay of execution over the summer. There are some really stupid reality show out there that need to be axed. And more new one coming. This is the kind of stuff that keeps me from even turning on my TV some nights.
Ditto everything you said!  I love this show, sorry it won't be renewed.
Never watched it.  Now you make me want to.  Unfortunately, I don't watch tv so that may be a problem.  Thank you for reading this comment.
This is a huge mistake. This show has been fantastic from the get go. Once again we are shown that the only way to become a TV executive is to not own or watch TV and have no friend who watch TV either. Bring on the crappy American Idol Apprentice shows!
Earl made me laugh, laugh out loud hysterical laughter when there isn't that much to laugh at. Of course they canceled it. It was really truly funny and where I come from, way too easy to relate to.
My Mom is 79 yrs.old and loved this show.  In my world that is all I need to know.  BRING BACK "EARL".
Rex Kuhl
"Earl" lets you feel like part of that wacky family, and lets you in on the joke.  It's one of the most original programs in years, and I love that it doesn't follow the "standard" script ideas.  I'm sick of "reality" shows and "contest" shows.  They all seem rigged and manipulative.  "Earl" appeals to a broad range of intellect, for a variety of reasons.  "NBC" should stand for "Not Beholding a Clue!"
I enjoyed the show until they lost focus.  The show as about Earl and his list, when they lost that, they lost me.  With dream sequences, comas, and prison time, it became a soap.
I loved My Name Is Earl but I also loved the show Life on NBC. I am very sad to see them go. As well as Scrubs
I Love Earl! I agree with everything you said. If another company doesn't pick this up, then I truly believe we have become a nation of idiots. This was a great show with a great message, but too smart for America. If it isn't loaded with over inflated egos, materialism, and stupidity, America won't watch.
Like "Arrested Development", "Earl" is one of those rare shows that is too brilliant to be appreciated by the network morons. What a shame.
I am an Earl fan and sad to see it go! There is no good programming on any of the networks any more. If there is they cancel after 3 shows or 4 years like Earl! I am so SICK of all the "reality" shows on, they are mindless dribble and yet seem to have the biggest watchers.
I really like The Unusuals on ABC and that is getting the ax right away, they don't give shows a chance anymore.
I am about ready to start watching my DVD's of Friends!
I watched Earl from the beginning.  It always had a moral to each episode. Recently my husband started watching and found it was a great show. Ax the reality shows.  They've taken Earl and Scrubs from me. How sad.
"My Name is Earl" is the only prime time show I watch. I can't stand the so-called reality tv out there. Earl is wonderful comedy that helps me laugh the day's problems away. I will miss it ... and fill it's half hour spot with...I don't know...nothing can fill its shoes
This is the reason I do not watch network T.V. anymore.  Good shows like this, Arrested Development, and several others get cancelled well before they should.  But junk like The Batcheler, American Idol, Dancing with Stars, etc. etc. just keep on going and the mindless drones just lap it up.

They don't/won't allow shows to develop a following anymore either, so it's not worth investing time with a new series that comes out.  Thank heaven for the Discovery Channel and shows like Dexter, Breaking Bad, Rescue Me, Weeds, and several others shows on cable or I would throw my T.V. away.
Thank you for writing this!  Earl wasn't glamorous but that was the whole point, it's really too bad that it was cancelled.
Earl is hilarious. how can they take off a show that consistantly makes you laugh?  and then they leave a cliffhanger just hanging!!  maybe if enough people complain, it will come back. But, I am realistic enough to know that that will never happen, because the powers that be have spoken.
SAVE EARL!
Best comedy on TV!
I wholeheartedly agree!  It's getting to the point where I'm almost afraid to get into a show with the high odds that it might get canceled after it's first few seasons.  I simply couldn't believe it when I heard Earl was canceled.  It's so great!
I loved Earl. I loved how much he cared about his brother and his friends. My favorite was when he took the blame and went to prison for Joy when he saw how much her family needed her. And I loved how fierce Joy was in her love for her family. That show had more heart than any I've ever seen and I will miss it a lot.
"My Name Is Earl" was a refreshingly entertaining program in an era when viewers are bombarded with a multitude of campy "Reality" shows and trite writing.  I hope another network can see the value of "Earl" and help him complete his list!
THis is a real bummer.  Earl has been one of my favorites for the last couple of years.  Aways good for a laugh and at least one "uh huh" moment.  Earl will be missed.  Is there going to be a finale episode, or did it get cut cold turkey (B.S.if you ask me)
I have been a Jason Lee and Ethan Suplee fan from the Kevin Smith movie days, and I loved the show.  It was always smart and funny in a dumb kind of way.  They never seemed to drop the intelligence level down to make  things interesting and humorous; they kept it real.

The guest stars added to the story lines beautifully, and as a long time fan of Alyssa Milano, she was perfect as one of Earl's love interests.  And lets not forget the opposites attract Christine Taylor and Marlee Matlin both cast as potential significant other's for Earl.

Earl fans can just hold on for something like an X-Files post series move that ties up all of the loose ends.  Kevin Smith would be the perfect directory.
I'll miss Earl and the gang. Sometimes bad things happen to great shows.
I cannot believe that My Name is Earl has been caneled! We have watched it as a family for some time. I cannot believe Bachelor is still going and a great show like Earl is canceled.
& i thought the fact that hey canceled "reaper" sucked.
Well put!  It's a shame to lose such a smart, funny show.  Jason Lee, Ethan Suplee and Jaime Pressley and everyone else was fantastic.  I found myself laughing out loud many times watching Earl, which is the highest praise in my book.  With so much crap on TV these days (John and Kate Plus 8, Cold Case, the entire MTV Network, CSI Miami) it's no surprise that the network television brain trust would cancel such a great show.
The best show ever--my heart is officially broken, but I will never forget the witness protection program officer's description of Joy's idea of hygiene!
This show was the meaning of life in its simplest form with the most heartwarming characters.Sigh!
Earl was a joy to watch.  Great writing and wonderful acting.  What is going to happen to mister turtle?
There goes another of my favorite shows. I must be out of step with the world.
I love Earl and am upset that we'll never know who is Little Earl's dad. I think Joy and Darnell are wonderful characters and my husband and I laugh and laugh through out each episode. We'll miss Earl and all his friends/family.
